Statistical Distribution of Gear Surface Fatigue Lives at High Reliability

The reliability of gears is important for a wide variety of applications, and the gearing community has a desire for better prediction of fatigue life at very high reliability. To improve predictions, a set of 950 NASA-conducted gear surface fatigue test results were gathered, pooled together using the general standardized Weibull variate, and then fit to a Weibull three-parameter distribution. An iterative fitting method was developed and then applied to the gear fatigue data to determine the values of the distribution parameters. Additional analyses were done using bearing and gear data that demonstrate a trend of increasing minimum life coefficient as correlated to the timeframe of the fatigue testing, and material cleanliness is proposed as a primary explanation for such correlation. It is noted that this observed trend supports published findings from analytical modeling and experimental studies that improvements to material cleanliness improves minimum fatigue life. Further use and study of the three-parameter Weibull distribution is recommended as a tool to quantify fatigue life most accurately in the high reliability regime.

A low maintenance and highly reliable fly-by-light architecture

This paper proposes a highly reliable distributed architecture for use in a commercial transport. Fly-By-Light characteristics of the architecture are a serial fiber optic backplane and redundant fiber optic data bus. The fiber optic bus is fault tolerant and Byzantine resilient. A distributed architecture (both physically and logically) can be realized by utilizing several processing clusters on the data bus. A processing cluster is composed of one or more processing units. The processing units consist of several modules. The modules of the processing unit are connected via a serial fiber optic backplane. Fault tolerance is implemented at the backplane to increase reliability and availability.

Development of a space qualified high reliability rotary actuator. Volume 1: Technical report

A space-qualified, high reliability, 150 ft-lb rated torque rotary acutator based on the Bendix Dynavector drive concept was developed. This drive is an integrated variable reluctance orbit motor-epicyclic transmission actuator. The performance goals were based on future control moment gyro torquer applications and represent a significant advancement in the torque-to-weight ratio, backlash, inertia and response characteristics of electric rotary drives. The program accomplishments have been in two areas: (1) the development of two high ratio (818:1) actuator configurations (breadboard and flightweight), and (2) the invention of a reliable proximity switch sensor system for self-commutation without use of optical or electrical brush techniques.

Monolithic ceramic capacitors for high reliability applications

Monolithic multi-layer ceramic dielectric capacitors are widely used in high reliability applications in spacecraft, launch vehicles, and military equipment. Their relatively low cost, wide range of values, and package styles are attractive features that result in high usage in electronic circuitry in these applications. Design and construction of monolithic ceramic dielectric capacitors, defects that can lead to failure, and methods for defect detection that are being incorporated in military specifications are discussed.

First Stage of a Highly Reliable Reusable Launch System

Electromagnetic launch assist has the potential to provide a highly reliable reusable first stage to a space access system infrastructure at a lower overall cost. This paper explores the benefits of a smaller system that adds the advantages of a high specific impulse air-breathing stage and supersonic launch speeds. The method of virtual specific impulse is introduced as a tool to emphasize the gains afforded by launch assist. Analysis shows launch assist can provide a 278-s virtual specific impulse for a first-stage solid rocket. Additional trajectory analysis demonstrates that a system composed of a launch-assisted first-stage ramjet plus a bipropellant second stage can provide a 48-percent gross lift-off weight reduction versus an all-rocket system. The combination of high-speed linear induction motors and ramjets is identified, as the enabling technologies and benchtop prototypes are investigated. The high-speed response of a standard 60 Hz linear induction motor was tested with a pulse width modulated variable frequency drive to 150 Hz using a 10-lb load, achieving 150 mph. A 300-Hz stator-compensated linear induction motor was constructed and static-tested to 1900 lbf average. A matching ramjet design was developed for use on the 300-Hz linear induction motor.
