Total Electron-Impact Ionization Cross-Sections of CFx and NFx (x = 1 - 3)

The discrepancy between experimental and theoretical total electron-impact ionization cross sections for a group of fluorides, CFx, and NFx, (x = 1 - 3), is attributed to the inadequacies in previous theoretical models. Cross-sections calculated using a recently developed siBED (simulation Binary-Encounter-Dipole) model that takes into account the shielding of the long-range dipole potential between the scattering electron and target are in agreement with experimentation. The present study also carefully reanalyzed the previously reported experimental data to account for the possibility of incomplete collection of fragment ions and the presence of ion-pair formation channels. For NF3, our experimental and theoretical cross-sections compare well with the total ionization cross-sections recently reported by Haaland et al. in the region below dication formation.

Molecular Data for a Biochemical Model of DNA Radiation Damage: Electron Impact Ionization and Dissociative Ionization of DNA Bases and Sugar-Phosphate Backbone

As part of the database for building up a biochemical model of DNA radiation damage, electron impact ionization cross sections of sugar-phosphate backbone and DNA bases have been calculated using the improved binary-encounter dipole (iBED) model. It is found that the total ionization cross sections of C3'- and C5'-deoxyribose-phospate, two conformers of the sugar-phosphate backbone, are close to each other. Furthermore, the sum of the ionization cross sections of the separate deoxyribose and phosphate fragments is in close agreement with the C3'- and C5'-deoxyribose-phospate cross sections, differing by less than 10%. Of the four DNA bases, the ionization cross section of guanine is the largest, then in decreasing order, adenine, thymine, and cytosine. The order is in accordance with the known propensity of oxidation of the bases by ionizing radiation. Dissociative ionization (DI), a process that both ionizes and dissociates a molecule, is investigated for cytosine. The DI cross section for the formation of H and (cytosine-Hl)(+), with the cytosine ion losing H at the 1 position, is also reported. The threshold of this process is calculated to be 17.1 eV. Detailed analysis of ionization products such as in DI is important to trace the sequential steps in the biochemical process of DNA damage.

The production efficiency of O/+//2P/ ions by auroral electron impact ionization

Observational data obtained from the Visible Airglow Experiment (VAE) on the Atmospheric Explorer D satellite is used to deduce the production efficiency of the excited 2P state of the O(+) ion in the electron impact ionization of O under auroral conditions. Measurements of the airglow intensity in the O(+)(2P-2D) transition band 7320-7330 A by the upward looking VAE photometer were compared with the intensity predicted on the basis of electron spectra measured at heights from 211 to 235 km within the emission. A production efficiency of 18% is obtained, which is close to theoretical predictions and supports the theoretical value of 40% for the production of the 2D state.

Electron impact ionization in the vicinity of comets

The solar wind interacts very strongly with the extensive cometary coma, and the various interaction processes are initiated by the ionization of cometary neutrals. The main ionization mechanism far outside the cometary bow shock is photoionization by solar extreme ultraviolet radiation.Electron distributions measured in the vicinity of comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner by instruments on the VEGA and ICE spacecraft, respectively, are used to calculate electron impact ionization frequencies. Ionization by electrons is of comparable importance to photoionization in the magnetosheaths of Comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner. The ionization frequency in the inner part of the cometary plasma region of comet Halley is several times greater than the photoionization value. Tables of ionization frequencies as functions of electron temperature are presented for H2O, CO2, CO, O, N2, and H.

Electron-Impact Ionization of Methane

We report a study of the total ionization of CH_4 by electron impact and its dissociative ionization from the ^2T_2 channel. The calculation of the total ionization cross section uses the improved Binary-Encounter-Dipole model (iBED).(W. A Huo, Phys. Rev. A (submitted for publication).) The dipole Born cross section in the model is expressed in terms of a three-term representation and the optical oscillator strengths are taken from Backx and Van der Wiel.(C. Backx and M. J. Van der Wiel, I Phys. B 18) 3020 (1975). The nuclear dynamics for the dissociation of the ^2T_2 channel is studied using the statistical model. A search of the potential energy surface of the ^2T_2 state of CH_4^+ shows two minima, of C_2v and C_3v symmetries, in agreement with earlier calculations. ((a) K. Takeshita, J. Chem. Phys. 86), 329 (1987). (b) R. F. Frey and E. R. Davidson, J. Chem. Phys. 88, 1775 (1988). The dissociation of the CH_4^+ to CH_3^+ + H goes through a saddle point. Comparison with recent experimental data will be presented and the role of Jahn-Teller effect discussed.

Electron-impact ionization of interstellar hydrogen and helium at interplanetary shocks

We investigate the ionization of interstellar hydrogen and helium due to electron impact by shock-heated electrons. Taking the electron distributions measured at four interplanetary shocks at 1 AU, we show that the electrons in the downstream region of strong shocks can ionize interstellar atoms at rates matching or exceeding the nominal photoionization or charge-exchange rates. We suggest that this process may explain some puzzling observations of interstellar pickup ions by the Ulysses spacecraft.

Electron impact ionization of H

The results of theoretical calculations for the reactions between electrons and negative hydrogen atoms are discussed for an electron colliding with a negative hydrogen ion and neutralizing the hydrogen ion by stripping the loosely bound electron from it, and the two free electrons moving away. A semi-quantum description of the process is presented in which the target is described in terms of quantum mechanics, and the projectile electron is described in a classical fashion.

The effect of conjugate photoelectron impact ionization on the pre-dawn ionosphere

The measured photoelectron fluxes are used to show that ionization by photoelectrons is not sufficiently large to affect significantly the nighttime ionosphere. The measured downward photoelectron flux used in the calculations is shown in a table. This flux was measured on December 9, 1971 at an altitude of 1400 km, when the local zenith angle was 159 deg and the conjugate zenith angle was 85.2 deg.

Electron impact ionization of Io's sodium emission cloud

The geometry of the sodium cloud associated with Io (Jupiter I) indicates that the lifetime of the neutral sodium atoms is an order of magnitude less than the photoionization lifetime. We suggest that ionization by thermal plasma electrons in the Jovian magnetosphere is the dominant Na loss process. Using plasma densities deduced from Pioneer 10 measurements, the lifetime and density distributions are calculated for Na and other species which may be present in the cloud around Io. Electron ionization of Na is found to be an order of magnitude faster than photoionization, in agreement with the lifetime deduced from Na cloud observations.

The threshold laws for electron-atom and positron-atom impact ionization

The Coulomb-dipole theory is employed to derive a threshold law for the lowest energy needed for the separation of three particles from one another. The study focuses on an electron impinging on a neutral atom, and the dipole is formed between an inner electron and the nucleus. The analytical dependence of the transition matrix element on energy is reduced to lowest order to obtain the threshold law, with the inner electron providing a shield for the nucleus. Experimental results using the LAMPF accelerator to produce a high energy beam of H- ions, which are then exposed to an optical laser beam to detach the negative H- ion, are discussed. The threshold level is found to be confined to the region defined by the upper bound of the inverse square of the Coulomb-dipole region. Difficulties in exact experimental confirmation of the threshold are considered.

Electron-Impact Ionization of Mg

A pulsed crossed beam technique is used to measure inonization cross-sections of metallic atoms. Relative values of cross-sections of single, double and triple inonization of magnesium have been successfully measured with good accuracy over the o-700 eV range. Absolute values of cross sections have been obtained by normalization to a theoretical value at high electron energy. Results are compared to previously published values and, for single inonization in particular, a comparison with theoretical cross-extions is perfomed.
