Interactions Between Landslides, the Mining Industry, and the Communities Tethered to This Industry in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa

The nature of the hilly and insecure terrain of the mining industry can also be home to numerous landslides that impact the lives of those dependent on this economy for survival. However, the connections between localized landslides in the mining sector and impacts to lives and livelihoods are often overlooked. This research focuses on the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality of the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa where frequent summer rains along with the steep terrain leads to abundant number of landslides. The mining analysis was performed within the eThekwini Municipality, while the entirety of KwaZulu-Natal Province was considered for the societal impact research.

Predicting EBC Temperature Limits for Industrial Gas Turbines

Higher turbine inlet temperatures may require the use of ceramic matrix composites (CMC) such as SiC/SIC, which require environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) to protect them against the detrimental effect of water vapor. Here, the goal of this project is to determine the maximum bond coating temperature for EBCs for land-based turbines, where the minimum coating lifetime is 25,000 h. If the temperature exceeds the 1414°C melting point of the Si bond coating, then coatings without a bond coating also need to be evaluated. Thus, current Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 EBCs with a Si bond coating and next-generation EBCs without a Si bond coating are being evaluated in laboratory testing using 1-h cycles in air+90%H 2 O. For this initial work, coatings were deposited on CVD SiC coupons. Reaction kinetics at 1250°, 1300° and 1350°C have been evaluated by measuring the thickness of the thermally grown silica scale after 100–500 h exposures. For comparison, scale growth rates for uncoated SiC and Si specimens in dry and wet environments were included as minimum and maximum values, respectively. Based on a critical scale thickness failure criteria, estimated maximum temperatures were calculated for both EBC systems using this initial data.

Economizing on Precious Metals in Three-Way Catalysts: Thermally Stable and Highly Active Single-Atom Rhodium on Cera for NO Abatement under Dry and Industrially Relevant Conditions

We show for the first time that atomically dispersed Rh cations on ceria, prepared via high-temperature atom trapping synthesis, are the active species for (CO+NO) reaction. This provides a direct link with the organometallic homogeneous Rh(I) complexes capable of catalyzing dry (CO+NO) reaction but without the stability concern. In particular, thermally stable Rh cations in 0.1wt% Rh1/CeO2 achieve full NO conversion with a TOF of ~ 330 hr-1 per Rh atom at 120 °C. Under dry conditions, the main product above 100 °C is N2 with N2O being the minor product. The presence of water promotes low-temperature activity of 0.1wt% Rh1/CeO2 starting at 50 °C with full NO conversion at ~120 °C. In the case with the wet stream, however, ammonia and nitrogen are the main products with only minor N2O amounts. NH3 formation at such low temperatures is attractive because of the potential to use this as a passive SCR system. Because of the uniformity of Rh ions on the support, we are able to observe the intermediates of (CO+NO) reaction via infrared measurements on Rh cations on zeolite and ceria. Furthermore, we show that ammonia formation correlates with the WGS activity of the material and thus, rhodium hydride Rh-H species are involved in this reaction: we detect Rh(CO)Hx species on ceria using isotopic IR measurements. These findings provide new mechanistic understanding for the catalytically active species in TWC catalysis and open up a new avenue for the synthesis of novel emissions control catalysts with 100% atom economy of ultra-expensive precious metals such as Rh.

Space industrialization. Volume 3: Space industrialization implementation concepts

Methods for selecting the most viable program options were examined along with techniques for hardware development. Several separate program options were defined, and future plans for space exploitation were reviewed. Hardware elements in various sectors of space are discussed in detail to provide a definition for the major functional elements and operations.

IECON '87: Industrial applications of control and simulation; Proceedings of the 1987 International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Control, and Instrumentation, Cambridge, MA, Nov. 3, 4, 1987

Recent advances in control-system design and simulation are discussed in reviews and reports. Among the topics considered are fast algorithms for generating near-optimal binary decision programs, trajectory control of robot manipulators with compensation of load effects via a six-axis force sensor, matrix integrators for real-time simulation, a high-level control language for an autonomous land vehicle, and a practical engineering design method for stable model-reference adaptive systems. Also addressed are the identification and control of flexible-limb robots with unknown loads, adaptive control and robust adaptive control for manipulators with feedforward compensation, adaptive pole-placement controllers with predictive action, variable-structure strategies for motion control, and digital signal-processor-based variable-structure controls.

Service Quality in the U.S. Airline Industry: Variations in Performance Within Airlines and Between Airlines and the Industry

This study examined the service quality of 25 U.S. airlines (1987-1996) using data from the Department of Transportation's Air Travel Consumer Report. After a total quality and total complaint rate was calculated for these airlines, a 95 percent confidence interval was placed around the yearly and company means calculated to examine those cases that were significantly different from the mean. Results indicate that while the major carriers are converging toward a higher level of quality, there continues to be significant yearly variation. The service quality of regional carriers was much lower than major carriers and showed much greater variation.
