COMPASS-FME Synoptic Site Characterization

This dataset contains soil biogeochemical and physicochemical characterization data for the COMPASS-FME synoptic sites. This dataset also contains data for the paper Patel et al. 2025 "Transition zones at the changing coastal terrestrial-aquatic interface", https://doi.org/10.1029/2025JG008978.Coastal soils are a significant but highly uncertain component of global biogeochemical cycles. These systems experience unique spatial and temporal variability in biogeochemical processes, driven by wetland-to-upland gradients and hydrological fluctuations. We studied drivers of coastal soil variability (a) at regional scales and (b) across transects from upland forest to wetland, in two contrasting regions — Lake Erie, a freshwater lacustrine system, and Chesapeake Bay, a saltwater estuarine system. Salinity-related analytes were a key driver of soil variability, not just in the saltwater system, but surprisingly, also in the freshwater system. We had hypothesized linear trends in biogeochemical parameters along the TAI – however, contrary to expectations, transition soils were not consistently intermediate between upland and wetland endmembers; the non-monotonic trends of carbon, phosphorus, iron along our transects suggest that these are key analytes to study in our regions. Rapidly changing soil factors across coastal gradients provide insights into which soil processes may act as precursors to ecosystem shifts. Our comprehensive soil characterization across the coastal transects provides essential data for mechanistic modeling of ecosystem dynamics. The data are provided as processed, csv files. Raw data and processing scripts can be accessed on GitHub (https://github.com/COMPASS-DOE/cmps-soil_characterization).A note on the nomenclature: the experimental design represents three points along the coastal gradient -- upland, transition, and wetland. "wetland" is referred to as "marsh" in the corresponding paper. The two terms can be used interchangeably for the sites in this study.

The Effect of Luminance Pattern on Nighttime Discomfort Glare Response - CRADA 653 (Abstract)

Light Emitting Diode (LED) adoption is critical for widespread energy savings from commercial outdoor lighting systems. A complaint from the public, concerns glare from LED light fixtures especially those with exposed LED arrays. This human factor study will examine luminance uniformity of the fixture aperture to identify parameters related to this response. The outcome will inform optical design by lighting manufacturers, retaining LED energy efficiency while mitigating glare. The results may also lead to improved industry standard glare metrics for lighting. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL) Lighting Science and Technology Lab in Portland OR has a purpose-built apparatus with exposed LED arrays that have been used for prior work. It can easily be adapted for use in this experiment. Interchangeable templates will allow changing patterns for the stimulus. Glare ratings from the recruited subjects will be analyzed and reported in a peer-reviewed journal for application by luminaire manufacturers for improved products. The McClung Foundation’s interest is to better understand human perception of lighting, leading to more comfortable and effective visual environments. Members of the Foundation’s Technical Review Committee will be instrumental in reviewing the experimental design, analysis, and the final report. They will also help disseminate information about the results within the lighting community.

Capability in Theory, Modeling, and Validation for a Range of Innovative Fusion Concepts using High-Fidelity Moment-Kinetic Models

A computational modeling capability is created and available to the fusion community to understand and design lower-cost and innovative fusion concepts. The approach uses high- fidelity kinetic, moment-kinetic, and moment models and includes sophisticated plasma- boundary interactions. A majority of fusion-relevant simulations are performed with magnetohydrodynamic models and hybrid particle-in-cell codes, with limited-fidelity electron and kinetic physics. However, in fusion configurations like Z-pinches, field-reversed- configurations, plasma jet magneto-inertial fusion, spinning mirrors, and others, kinetic effects (both electron and ions) are critical to understand the physics and design scaling into the highly kinetic regime of a burning fusion plasma. Furthermore, as present fusion machines move towards a burning plasma regime, liquid-metal blankets are needed to handle first-wall heat- flux, reduce erosion, and eventually for energy conversion and fuel breeding. The work performed under this ARPA-E BETHE Capability Team advances the state-of-the-art in modeling and understanding plasma dynamics in fusion devices and its coupling with liquid-metal dynamics. These are critical areas of research for fusion energy to become realizable. To address these complex problems, we have leveraged and extended computational capabilities through the code, Gkeyll (developed jointly with Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and academic partners), for kinetic and moment modeling of fusion plasmas. The Concept Teams supported by this Capability Team include the Wisconsin High-field Axisymmetric Mirror (WHAM), Centrifugal Mirror Experiment (CFME), Plasma-Jet Magneto- Inertial Fusion (PJMIF), and solid and liquid wall plasma-material interaction studies relevant to a number of fusion concepts including Zap Energy’s Z-pinch. This software is open-source and available to the fusion community as a high-fidelity tool for the design of lower-cost fusion experiments. 3D gyrokinetic simulations of WHAM are now possible for long enough time scales to understand the evolution of interchange instabilities. 3D multi-fluid simulations of CMFE at higher Mach numbers are now possible for detailed design iterations with the goal of stability. The state-of-the-art in understanding shock formation and shock mitigation regimes in merging liners for PJMIF have been furthered by our kinetic simulations. Our novel models and frameworks studying plasma-material interaction by incorporating wall emission for various solid wall materials of relevance to pulsed and steady fusion concepts have advanced the state-of-the-art in our understanding of particle fluxes, heat fluxes, and other quantities at cathodes and anodes. The results from this work may explain discrepancies between experimental and theoretical predictions of achieved current densities in pulsed concepts such as Z-pinches. Another significant contribution of this Capability Team is the development and deployment of a novel experimental platform, LEX (Liquid Electrode eXperiment), at Virginia Tech to understand liquid metal free-surface response to electromagnetic pulses. The novel experiments along with model validation quantified the effect of different materials and sizes of liquid metal droplets on the radiative power balance of fusion plasmas for pulsed concepts. Furthermore, these experiments provided mitigation strategies for violent liquid metal response for high current pulses as would be expected in fusion regimes.

Modeling Particle Acceleration and Release from Solar Eruptions

Determining the relative contribution of solar flares versus coronal mass ejections in large solar energetic particle (SEP) events is a long-standing problem. Flare-accelerated particles may travel through complex magnetic fields in the eruption region and escape into interplanetary space, thereby contributing to large SEP events. The process by which flare accelerated particles are released into the heliosphere is poorly understood and yet is critical to advancing our understanding of SEPs. In this work, we address the release problem by solving the focused transport equation in the context of a 2.5D ARMS magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a breakout coronal mass ejection (CME)/flare event. We find that particles accelerated by flare reconnection can be released into interplanetary space through interchange reconnection between closed and open field lines. These particles can contribute directly to SEP events and may become an important seed population for further acceleration by CME-driven shocks. Additionally, we find that the energetic particle fluxes in the inner heliosphere remain elevated for an extended period, allowing them to contribute to SEP acceleration by subsequent CMEs. This study represents the first direct particle modeling of how flare-accelerated particles can contribute to major SEP events.

rustpix

rustpix is a high-performance, open-source Rust library with first-class Python bindings (via PyO3) for processing pixel-detector data in neutron imaging. It targets time-stamping detectors such as Timepix3 (TPX3) at ORNL's Spallation Neutron Source (VENUS beamline), where each detected neutron deposits charge across a cluster of pixels within a very high-rate event stream (96M+ hits/sec). rustpix parses TPX3 event data in parallel using memory-mapped I/O, offers four interchangeable clustering algorithms (ABS adjacency-based search, DBSCAN, graph/union-find connected components, and a parallel grid method), and extracts weighted, super-resolved centroids to produce neutron-event lists. A streaming architecture lets it process files larger than available memory. rustpix is distributed as a pip-installable Python package (with NumPy integration), Rust crates, a command-line tool, and an interactive GUI; it writes HDF5, Apache Arrow, and CSV; and it is designed to extend to TPX4 and other detector types. Released as open-source under the MIT License.
