MAGSAT anomaly map and continental drift

Anomaly maps of high quality are needed to display unambiguously the so called long wave length anomalies. The anomalies were analyzed in terms of continental drift and the nature of their sources is discussed. The map presented confirms the thinness of the oceanic magnetized layer. Continental magnetic anomalies are characterized by elongated structures generally of east-west trend. Paleomagnetic reconstruction shows that the anomalies found in India, Australia, and Antarctic exhibit a fair consistency with the African anomalies. It is also shown that anomalies are locked under the continents and have a fixed geometry.

Layer-Dependent Magnetism and Spin Fluctuations in Atomically Thin van der Waals Magnet CrPS 4

van der Waals (vdW) magnets, an emerging family of two-dimensional (2D) materials, have received tremendous attention due to their rich fundamental physics and significant potential for cutting-edge technological applications. In contrast to the conventional bulk counterparts, vdW magnets exhibit significant tunability of local material properties, such as stacking engineered interlayer coupling and layer-number dependent magnetic and electronic interactions, which promise to deliver previously unavailable merits to develop multifunctional microelectronic devices. As a further ingredient of this emerging topic, here we report nanoscale quantum sensing and imaging of atomically thin vdW magnet chromium thiophosphate CrPS 4 , revealing its characteristic layer-dependent 2D static magnetism and dynamic spin fluctuations. We also show a large tunneling magnetoresistance in CrPS 4 -based spin filter vdW heterostructures. Here, the excellent material stability, robust strategy against environmental degradation, in combination with tailored magnetic properties highlight the potential of CrPS 4 in developing state-of-the-art 2D spintronic devices for next-generation information technologies.

Current-driven transverse domain wall oscillations in perpendicular spin-valve structures

Spin-transfer-driven oscillations of a transverse domain wall confined to a perpendicular spin-valve structure are investigated using a one-dimensional model. The stack consists of a polarizer, nonmagnetic spacer, soft free layer, and pinned magnetic layer. It is found that the domain-wall oscillation frequency is a nonmonotonic, highly asymmetrical function of applied electric current, showing a strong dependence on the current direction and the relative strengths of the interfacial and bulk spin-transfer torques. Micromagnetic analysis reveals that the surprising and atypical oscillator response is due to an interplay between the interfacial spin-transfer torque, the bulk spin-transfer torque, the exchange torque, and the damping torque. The underlying physical and material responses are examined, including the important role of the domain-wall twist. The competitions between the involved torques under different operating conditions suggest that the oscillator could serve as a model system to investigate magnetic and spintronic phenomena at the nanoscale. Finally, the observed current-dependent twisting of the free-layer magnetization about the axis of precession may further be found interesting for investigations of the interaction between spin-polarized current and chiral spin structures.

Interfacial magnetic vortex formation in exchange-coupled hard-soft magnetic bilayers

The exchange coupling between a hard magnetic layer MnBi and a soft magnetic layer Co-Fe has been found to significantly improve the maximum energy product. In this work, the spin structure of exchange coupled MnBi:Co-Fe bilayers is experimentally investigated by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR). We find that the out-of-plane magnetization reversal process of the MnBi:Co-Fe bilayer structure involves formation of a curling-type twisting of the magnetization in the film plane at low or intermediate reversal fields. Additionally, micromagnetic simulations are further performed to provide a detailed view of the spins at the curling center. Reminiscent of chiral spin structures known as spin bobbers, this curling in the exchange-coupled hard-soft magnetic bilayers is a new type of skyrmionic spin structure and worth further investigation.

Effect of magnetic geometry on the energy partition between ions and electrons in the scrape-off layer of magnetic fusion devices

A universal energy partition mechanism between ions and electrons has been confirmed to exist in the scrape-off layer of both the WEST tokamak and the W7-X stellarator. A peaked plasma density structure induced by an infinite magnetic connection length structure is observed to destroy this dependence and enhance the local ion and electron temperature ratio in the stellarator. Here, a theoretical analysis reveals that the ratio of ion and electron parallel heat conduction is predominant in determining this universality, while electrons would further be cooled in the density-peaked region.

Equilibrium and tearing stability of thin current layers in magnetic arcades

The MHD equilibrium of a thin, force-free current layer in a magnetic arcade is solved analytically. Various approximations are made in order to achieve a lowest order description that is physically relevant as well as mathematically tractable: The arcade is assumed to emanate from feet that are well localized, the current emanates from a localized sheet within the feet and is relatively weak. The resulting expressions for B (sup arrow) are relatively simple and natural flux coordinates are identifiable. The stability of such a current sheet to resistive filamentation is then investigated.

The expansion of polarization charge layers into magnetized vacuum - Theory and computer simulations

The formation and evolution of polarization charge layers on cylindrical plasma streams moving in vacuum are investigated using analytic theory and 2D electrostatic particle-in-cell computer simulations. It is shown that the behavior of the electron charge layer goes through three stages. An early time expansion is driven by electrostatic repulsion of electrons in the charge layer. At the intermediate stage, the simulations show that the electron-charge-layer expansion is halted by the positively charged plasma stream. Electrons close to the stream are pulled back to the stream and a second electron expansion follows in time. At the late stage, the expansion of the ion charge layer along the magnetic field lines accompanies the electron expansion to form an ambipolar expansion. It is found that the velocities of these electron-ion expansions greatly exceed the velocities of ambipolar expansions which are driven by plasma temperatures.

Ultrastrong magnon-magnon coupling and chiral spin-texture control in a dipolar 3D multilayered artificial spin-vortex ice

Strongly-interacting nanomagnetic arrays are ideal systems for exploring reconfigurable magnonics. They provide huge microstate spaces and integrated solutions for storage and neuromorphic computing alongside GHz functionality. These systems may be broadly assessed by their range of reliably accessible states and the strength of magnon coupling phenomena and nonlinearities. Increasingly, nanomagnetic systems are expanding into three-dimensional architectures. This has enhanced the range of available magnetic microstates and functional behaviours, but engineering control over 3D states and dynamics remains challenging. Here, we introduce a 3D magnonic metamaterial composed from multilayered artificial spin ice nanoarrays. Comprising two magnetic layers separated by a non-magnetic spacer, each nanoisland may assume four macrospin or vortex states per magnetic layer. This creates a system with a rich 16 N microstate space and intense static and dynamic dipolar magnetic coupling. The system exhibits a broad range of emergent phenomena driven by the strong inter-layer dipolar interaction, including ultrastrong magnon-magnon coupling with normalised coupling rates of $\frac{Δf}{v}$ = 0.57, GHz mode shifts in zero applied field and chirality-control of magnetic vortex microstates with corresponding magnonic spectra.

Multimachine analysis of intermittent fluctuations in the scrape-off layer of magnetically confined fusion plasmas

Far scrape-off layer fluctuations, also known as blobs/filaments, are compared for the first time across six tokamaks: Alcator C-Mod, DIII-D, TCV, KSTAR, MAST, and MAST-U, under the context of stochastic modeling in Ohmic and low confinement mode scenarios. In this model, which well describes these fluctuations, measurements from Langmuir probes are modeled as a superposition of uncorrelated, two-sided exponential temporal pulses. The key parameters of this model are the mean waiting times between consecutive pulses, the pulse duration times and the mean of the pulse amplitudes. The study examines the influence of line-averaged density, plasma current, magnetic field and aspect ratio. The mean amplitudes and pulse waiting times increase with the line-averaged density across devices, while the pulse duration times remain constant. Whereas the variation in waiting times is gradual across the density scan, the mean amplitudes increase abruptly as the density profile broadens and flattens for Alcator C-Mod. The blob waiting times decrease with increasing plasma current and the toroidal magnetic field, while they increase with aspect ratio for conventional tokamaks. The duration times follow the same trends as the waiting times in these parameters but vary more slowly, resulting in the trends in the waiting times dominating the intermittency level of the fluctuations.

Thermal stability and magnetization switching of composite free layer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

We present a micromagnetic study of a ferromagnetically exchange-coupled composite free layer design for perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions. The thermal stability factor and critical switching current density depend on the exchange coupling strength and effective anisotropy ratio between the sublayers of the composite free layer. The energy barrier increases with an increase of the exchange coupling strength until it reaches a plateau in the strong-coupling limit. An optimal exchange coupling strength exists that leads to the minimal critical switching current and a significant improvement of the figure of merit defined as the ratio between the energy barrier and critical switching current. This behavior is obtained for smaller device sizes with uniform reversal and larger sizes with domain wall reversal.

Topological spin/structure couplings in layered chiral magnet Cr 1/3 TaS 2 : The discovery of spiral magnetic superstructure

Significance Magnets in which chirality of crystal lattice gives rise to noncollinear spin orders are ideal playgrounds for studies of novel physical phenomena originating from the nontrivial topology of magnetic textures. Most studies have been focused on homochiral materials, while topological magnetic states of heterochiral magnets have rarely been explored. Here, we report a layered chiral helimagnet with highly tunable topological heterochiral states. Tuning the chiral domain density, we have observed a topological magnetic texture that has the form of a spiral unfolding in the radial direction. In weak in-plane fields, this spiral magnetic superstructure transforms into a nonspiral array of concentric rings. Our results open a horizon for studies of tunable topological magnetic textures.

Quantum anomalous Hall effect in perfectly compensated collinear antiferromagnetic thin films

Here, we show that the quantum anomalous Hall effect almost always occurs in magnetic topological insulator thin films whenever the top and bottom surface layer magnetizations are parallel at some temperature, independent of the interior layer magnetization configuration. Using this criterion, we identify structures that have a quantum anomalous Hall effect even though they have collinear magnetic structures with no net magnetization, and discuss strategies for realizing these interesting magnetic states experimentally.

Controlling polarization of spintronic THz emitter by remanent magnetization texture

Terahertz (THz) sciences and technologies have contributed to a rapid development of a wide range of applications and expanded the frontiers in fundamental science. Spintronic terahertz emitters offer conceptual advantages since the spin orientation in the magnetic layer can be easily controlled either by the externally applied magnetic field or by the internal magnetic field distribution determined by the specific shape of the magnetic elements. Here, we report a switchable terahertz source based on micropatterned magnetic heterostructures driven by femtosecond laser pulses. We show that the precise tunability of the polarization state is facilitated by the underlying magnetization texture of the magnetic layer that is dictated by the shape of the microstructure. These results also reveal the underlying physical mechanisms of a nonuniform magnetization state on the generation of ultrafast spin currents in the magnetic heterostructures. Our findings indicate that the emission of the linearly polarized THz waves can be switched on and off by saturating the sample using a biasing magnetic field, opening fascinating perspectives for integrated on-chip THz devices with wide-ranging potential applications.

Layer pseudospin magnetism in a transition metal dichalcogenide double-moiré system

Spontaneous order of layer pseudospins in two-dimensional bilayers is common in quantum Hall systems, where it is responsible for hysteretic responses to gate fields in states with Ising order and giant drag voltages in states with XY (spontaneous interlayer phase coherence) order. In this article we predict that layer pseudospin order will also occur in double-moiré strongly correlated two-dimensional electron systems. Here, we comment on similarities and differences in the competition between the two types of order in quantum Hall and double-moiré systems, and relate our findings to previous work on Falicov-Kimball models of electronic ferroelectrics.

Study of the magnetic interface and its effect in Fe/NiFe bilayers of alternating order

We present a comprehensive study on the magnetization reversal in the Fe/NiFe bilayer system by alternating the order of the magnetic layers. All the samples show growth-induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy due to the oblique angle deposition technique. Strong interfacial exchange coupling between the Fe and NiFe layers leads to single-phase hysteresis loops in the bilayer system. The strength of coupling being dependent on the interface changes upon alternating the order of magnetic layers. The magnetic parameters such as coercivity H C , and anisotropy field H K become almost doubled when a NiFe layer is grown over the Fe layers. This enhancement in the magnetic parameters is primarily dependent on the increase of the thickness and magnetic moment of the Fe–NiFe interfacial layer as revealed from the polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) data of the bilayer samples. The difference in the thickness and magnetization of the Fe–NiFe interfacial layer indicates the modification of the microstructure by alternating the order of the magnetic layers of the bilayers. The interfacial magnetic moment increased by almost 18% when the NiFe layer was grown over the Fe layer. In spite of the different values of anisotropy fields and modified interfacial exchange coupling, the Gilbert damping constant values of the ferromagnetic bilayers remain similar to the single NiFe layer.
