Robustifying Links To Combat Reference Rot

Links to web resources frequently break, and linked content can change at unpredictable rates. These dynamics of the Web are detrimental when references to web resources provide evidence or supporting information. In this paper, we highlight the significance of reference rot, provide an overview of existing techniques and their characteristics to address it, and introduce our Robust Links approach, including its web service and underlying API. Robustifying links offers a proactive, uniform, and machine-actionable way to combat reference rot. In addition, we discuss our reasoning and approach aimed at keeping the approach functional for the long term. To showcase our approach, we have robustified all links in this article.

Tailoring Lifetimes and Properties of Carbodiimide-Fueled Covalently Cross-linked Polymer Networks

The mechanical properties of nonequilibrium polymer hydrogels obtained from the transient cross-linking of polymer chains by a chemical fuel were investigated. Aqueous polymers featuring pendant carboxylic acids were treated with a carbodiimide to give anhydride-cross-linked gels. The anhydrides spontaneously hydrolyze back to the polymer solution, and the cycle can be repeated multiple times. Oscillatory rheology was employed to study the effects of temperature, fuel concentration, chain length, and polymer composition on the storage and loss moduli of the polymeric materials as well as the time taken for the polymers to undergo decross-linking. Regardless of the temperature used, at constant carbodiimide concentration, degelation times are more sensitive to experimental temperature than are the peak storage moduli. Decross-linking times decrease with increasing temperature. As carbodiimide concentration decreases, there is a decrease in moduli and decross-linking times. Within the scope of materials studied, the polymer structure was found to have a relatively small impact on the transient properties of gel networks compared to the fuel concentration and temperature. Furthermore, these findings facilitate the design of tunable on-demand networks and gels.

Ultraviolet-Activated Solid-State Nitrene Cross-Linking: A Scalable Pathway to Prolonged Lifespan in Anion Exchange Membranes

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) offer a cost-effective alternative to proton exchange membranes as alkaline fuel cells and electrolyzers permit the use of non-platinum group electrodes and components. Despite continued progress, the operational lifetime and stability of these membranes limit the widespread adoption of AEM-based electrochemical technologies. This study presents a flexible and easily implemented ultraviolet (UV)-initiated nitrene-based cross-linking method which uses a small, facile organic azide precursor. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate this approach on the well-studied poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) quaternary ammonium AEM (QPPO) polyelectrolyte. Further, a survey of cross-linker density (2.5–10 mol %) found that the addition of 10 mol % results in a 59% reduction in water uptake, a 58.8% decrease in the swell ratio, and a 31% increase in tensile strength vs the un-cross-linked material. Nitrene cross-linking also enhanced the membrane’s durability, enabling 1000 h of stable performance under electrochemical load. This UV-initiated cross-linking method may be easily integrated into production processes, allowing chemical cross-linking at any stage, including posthydration.

Distinguishing Single and Linked Ruptures in the Laboratory and Nature

Earthquakes can grow either monotonically from a single, stressed patch or through linking multiple stressed regions. The distinction has implications for magnitude predictability with single ruptures requiring knowledge of the local stress state, while linked ruptures require knowing the global stress and energy distribution. Here, we use a laboratory fault that allows direct observation of slip to determine which fault conditions promote linked ruptures, and how to observationally evaluate their likelihood. Higher concentrations of normal stress due to increased normal force, applied stress asperities, or larger heterogeneity between the samples, all lead to significant increases in linked rupture likelihood. The mean radiated energy enhancement factor (REEF) of large events is an excellent proxy for linked event likelihood, and a combination of REEF and duration can identify the rupture style of some but not all events. The results imply that globally observed variations of REEF can be interpreted as variations in stress concentration.

Reversible two-way tuning of thermal conductivity in an end-linked star-shaped thermoset

Polymeric thermal switches that can reversibly tune and significantly enhance their thermal conductivities are desirable for diverse applications in electronics, aerospace, automotives, and medicine; however, they are rarely achieved. Here, we report a polymer-based thermal switch consisting of an end-linked star-shaped thermoset with two independent thermal conductivity tuning mechanisms—strain and temperature modulation—that rapidly, reversibly, and cyclically modulate thermal conductivity. The end-linked star-shaped thermoset exhibits a strain-modulated thermal conductivity enhancement up to 11.5 at a fixed temperature of 60 °C (increasing from 0.15 to 2.1 W m –1 K –1 ). Additionally, it demonstrates a temperature-modulated thermal conductivity tuning ratio up to 2.3 at a fixed stretch of 2.5 (increasing from 0.17 to 0.39 W m –1 K –1 ). When combined, these two effects collectively enable the end-linked star-shaped thermoset to achieve a thermal conductivity tuning ratio up to 14.2. Moreover, the end-linked star-shaped thermoset demonstrates reversible tuning for over 1000 cycles. The reversible two-way tuning of thermal conductivity is attributed to the synergy of aligned amorphous chains, oriented crystalline domains, and increased crystallinity by elastically deforming the end-linked star-shaped thermoset.

Anticipating Optical Availability in Hybrid RF/FSO Links Using RF Beacons and Deep Learning

Radiofrequency (RF) communications offer reliable but low data rates and energy-inefficient satellite links, while free-space optical (FSO) promises high bandwidth but struggles with disturbances imposed by atmospheric effects. A hybrid RF/FSO architecture aims to achieve optimal reliability along with high data rates for space communications. Accurate prediction of dynamic ground-to-satellite FSO link availability is critical for routing decisions in low-earth orbit constellations. In this paper, we propose a system leveraging ubiquitous RF links to proactively forecast FSO link degradation prior to signal drops below threshold levels. This enables pre-calculation of rerouting to maximally maintain high data rate FSO links throughout the duration of weather effects. We implement a supervised learning model to anticipate FSO attenuation based on the analysis of RF patterns. Through the simulation of a dense lower earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, we demonstrate the efficacy of our approach in a simulated satellite network, highlighting the balance between predictive accuracy and prediction duration. An emulated cloud attenuation model is proposed to provide insight into the temporal profiles of RF signals and their correlation to FSO channel dynamics. Our investigation sheds light on the trade-offs between prediction horizon and accuracy arising from RF beacon numbers and proximity.

Scaling comb-driven resonator-based DWDM silicon photonic links to multi-Tb/s in the multi-FSR regime

The use of chip-based micro-resonator Kerr frequency combs in conjunction with dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) enables massively parallel intensity-modulated direct-detection data transmission with low energy consumption. Resonator-based modulators and filters used in such systems can limit the number of usable wavelength channels due to practical constraints on the maximum achievable free spectral range (FSR). In this work, we introduce the design of multi-Tb/s comb-driven resonator-based silicon photonic links by leveraging the multi-FSR regime. We demonstrate the viability of the link architecture with yield estimates that are supported by extensive wafer-scale measurements of 704 micro-resonators fabricated in a commercial complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor foundry. We show that a 2.80 Tb/s link is realizable with a ≥6 σ yield (∼99.999%), and that aggregate bandwidths of 3.76 Tb/s and 4.72 Tb/s are possible if yield targets are relaxed (3 σ and 1 σ , respectively). All designs represent a 1.94−3.28× boost to aggregate link bandwidth while maintaining BER≤10 −10 performance, with a theoretical bandwidth of 10.51 Tb/s being possible for sufficiently robust resonators. We use high-speed BER measurements to inform co-optimization of data rate and aggressor spacing ( λ ag ), limiting any additional loss-based power penalties to off-resonance insertion loss (IL) and routing loss. This work demonstrates that, through the multi-FSR regime, there is a clear path toward Kerr comb-driven ultra-broadband, high bandwidth silicon photonic links that can support next-generation data centers and high-performance computers.

A multigigabit link layer protocol for single picosecond latency determinism using AMD ultrascale+ GTH and GTY transreceivers

recision timing distribution systems require determin istic and repeatable high speed serial data link latency. The EIC Timing Data Link will employ a specialized link layer protocol for deterministic multigigabit communication us ing AMD Ultrascale+ GTH and GTY transceivers. Link la tency must also be measurable to accurately compensate in real time for latency variations of the physical medium. The point-to-point link is full duplex and fully synchronous with a latency control algorithm to align the internal clocks of each system with picosecond resolution. Deterministic clock domain crossing between systems is ensured using static timing analysis of the elastic buffer control signals.

Reliable voltage scaled links for compressed data

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for reliably transmitting data over voltage scaled links are disclosed. A computing system includes at least first and second devices connected via a link. In one implementation, if a data block can be compressed to less than or equal to half the original size of the data block, then the data block is compressed and sent on the link in a single clock cycle rather than two clock cycles. If the data block cannot be compressed to half the original size, but if the data block can be compressed enough to include error correction code (ECC) bits without exceeding the original size, then ECC bits are added to the compressed block which is sent on the link at a reduced voltage. The ECC bits help to correct for any errors that are generated as a result of operating the link at the reduced voltage.

Analysis and design of DC-link capacitor in cascaded H-bridge multilevel active front-end converter

Medium-voltage grid-tied systems often use a cascaded H-bridge multi-level active front-end. In this converter, dc link bus capacitors play an important role in stabilizing the converter and enabling both active and reactive power injections. The present work provides analytical expressions for the capacitor current, which are essential for optimizing system design (especially capacitor size vs. lifetime). Then, the expression is incorporated into the grid connected bidirectional power system model. Consequently, this work contributes to the guiding principles to choose accurate dc link capacitor ratings against grid-side power delivery requirements. DC-link capacitors come with an expiration date which is dependent on the operating power and voltage values. Lack of information about the lifetime of the dc-link capacitor creates uncertainty in the duration of online operation of the converter, thus increasing the probability of a contingency outage. The lifetime of the capacitor can range from only a few seconds of online operation of the station due to under-sizing, to a compromised quality of power flowing through other solid state devices which may not have been designed for the transients that are caused by over-sizing of the dc-link capacitor. A better estimate of the lifetime of these capacitors can help maximize usage and maintain scheduled outages more efficiently, without disruption in service.

Interconnected Nanoporous Polysulfone by the Self-Assembly of Randomly Linked Copolymer Networks and Linear Multiblocks

Porous materials have attracted considerable attention due to their versatile applications, especially in water purification. Interconnected nanoporous structures are distinguished by their high degree of porosity and resistance to clogging, as well as their insensitivity to nanostructural orientation. Previous works on randomly linked copolymer systems have shown that they can effectively produce disordered cocontinuous nanostructures, which upon removal of one component yield interconnected nanoporous materials. However, the cocontinuous nanomaterials previously developed using polystyrene (PS) and poly(d,l-lactic acid) (PLA) strands, and the resulting interconnected nanoporous PS monoliths, were far too brittle to enable practical use as membranes. Here, we study the self-assembly of randomly linked copolymer networks prepared using blocks of the engineering polymer polysulfone (PSU). A wide cocontinuous regime (spanning 40 wt %) was found for randomly end-linked copolymer networks (RECNs) constructed from PSU and PLA strands, via a combination of mechanical testing, gravimetry, small-angle X-ray scattering, and scanning electron microscopy. The PSU/PLA cocontinuous nanomaterial with symmetric composition showed 2.4 times higher Young’s modulus and ~100 times greater toughness than the corresponding PS/PLA sample. The interconnected nanoporous PSU fabricated after etching of PLA even exhibited 1.6 times greater toughness than PS/PLA prior to PLA removal. To facilitate the production of thin films of cocontinuous nanomaterials, we applied solution-processable randomly linked linear PSU/PLA multiblock polymers onto ultrafiltration membranes. Here, the interconnected nanoporous PSU thin film generated by etching PLA was found to effectively reject 50 nm diameter particles without significantly compromising permeability. This discovery presents a valuable addition to the existing techniques used to fabricate PSU membranes. In contrast to traditional methods, which are sensitive to processing conditions, produce a wide range of pore sizes, and offer limited adjustability of pore size, the current technique is anticipated to enable interconnected PSU membranes with more uniform and tailorable porosity.

Article content includes cumulative and complementary cumulative belief, plausibility, and probability for (i) time at which LOAS occurs for a one WL/two SL system, (ii) time at which a two-link system fails, (iii) temperature at which a two-link system fails, and (iv) temperature at which LOAS occurs for a one WL/two SL system. The presented results can be generalized to systems with more than one WL and two SLs.

A mesoscopic link-transmission-model able to track individual vehicles

Macroscopic traffic flow is a common choice for large-scale traffic simulations. These models do not provide individual-specific metrics as outputs. However, this treatment is necessary in agent-based-models, as in, for example, assigning routes based on personal characteristics. Here, in this paper, we propose an extension of the link-transmission-model, an efficient and yet accurate discretization of the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model, which allow vehicles to be tracked individually while keeping the main features of the underlying model. The extension comprises modifying the link and node models to ensure that the flow between links is always at discrete levels. Therefore, every unit of flow is associated with one individual vehicle moving from its current to its next link. An upper bound of the discretization error is provided. We show that the proposed model resembles its continuous counterpart on lane drop, merge, and diverge cases. In addition, we apply the model into three different networks to validate its applicability in large networks. Finally, we also confirm the parameter transferability between continuous and discrete models and that both can well reproduce field data.

Mechanism and Reaction Energy Landscape for Apiose Cross-Linking by Boric Acid in Rhamnogalacturonan II

Rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II)—the most complex polysaccharide known in nature—exists as a borate cross-linked dimer in the plant primary cell wall. Boric acid facilitates the formation of this cross-link on the apiosyl residues of RG-II’s side chain A. Here, we detail the reaction mechanism for the cross-linking process with ab initio calculations coupled with transition state theory. We determine the formation of the first ester linkage to be the rate-limiting step of the mechanism. Our findings demonstrate that the regio- and stereospecific nature of subsequent steps in the reaction itinerary presents four distinct energetically plausible reaction pathways. This has significant implications for the overall structure of the cross-linked RG-II dimer assembly. Finally, our transition state and reaction path analyses reveal key geometric insights that corroborate previous experimental hypotheses on borate ester formation reactions.

Mapping Hsp104 interactions using cross‐linking mass spectrometry

Molecular machines from the AAA+ (ATPases Associated with diverse cellular Activity) superfamily of protein disaggregases play important roles in protein folding, disaggregation and DNA processing. Recent cryo-EM structures of AAA+ molecular machines have uncovered nuanced changes in their conformation that underlie their specialized functions. Structural knowledge of these molecular machines in complex with substrates begins to explain their mechanism of activity. Here, we explore how cross-linking mass spectrometry (XL-MS) can be used to interpret changes in conformation induced by ATP in Hsp104 and how a substrate may interact with Hsp104. We applied a panel of cross-linking reagents to produce cross-linking maps of Hsp104 and interpret our data on previously determined X-ray and cryo-EM structures of Hsp104 from a thermophilic yeast, Calcarisporiella thermophila. We developed an analysis pipeline to differentiate between intra-subunit and inter-subunit contacts within the hexameric homo-oligomer. We identify cross-links that break the asymmetry that is present in Hsp104 in an ATP-hydrolysis competent conformation but is absent in an ATP-hydrolysis-defective mutant. Finally, we identify contacts between Hsp104 and a selected protein (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 PCSK9) to reveal contacts on the central channel of Hsp104 across the length of this protein indicating that we might have trapped interactions consistent with its translocation. Our simple and robust XL-MS-based experiments and methods help interpret how these molecular machines change conformation and bind to other proteins even in the context of homo-oligomeric assemblies enabling coupling state-of-the-art modeling approaches with XL-MS.

Microphase Separation of Randomly Linked Branched Polystyrene/Polylactic Acid for Formation of Cocontinuous Nanostructures

Cocontinuous polymeric nanomaterials have gained attention for their ability to preserve distinct properties of constituent microphases within a single material. Randomly linked copolymer networks have shown very wide stability windows for disordered cocontinuous phases (extending over ≈ 30 wt % in composition), but the reliance on a network architecture prevents subsequent solution- or melt-processing. Furthermore, the key factors contributing to cocontinuity have remained unclear. We recently found that randomly linked star copolymers (RSCs) can exhibit a cocontinuous window as wide as 25 wt % in the case of 4-arm stars, suggesting that while a network architecture is not essential for the formation of disordered cocontinuous phases, the presence of random elastic forces in such architectures may indeed facilitate their formation. In addition, the behavior was found to be highly sensitive to arm number, with 6-arm RSCs exhibiting almost no cocontinuous phase. These results raised a key mechanistic question regarding the contribution of random elastic forces, originating from strands that bridge between junctions, in stabilizing disordered cocontinuous phases. In the current study, we synthesized randomly linked branched copolymers (RBCs) of polystyrene (PS) and poly(D,L-lactic acid) (PLA), which represent an intermediate architecture between networks and stars. This approach allows for the introduction of elastic contributions from strands bridging between different junctions, while still maintaining the processability advantages of a non-network architecture. The cocontinuous regions of the PS/PLA RBCs, with varying polymer and linker functionalities (f p and f l , respectively), were characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering, gravimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. We found that the cocontinuous windows of RBCs typically expanded with increasing elastic contributions and exhibited reduced sensitivity to junction-functionality compared to RSCs. Notably, RBCs with f p = 1.50 and f l = 3, which had large molecular weights due to proximity to the gel point, achieved a cocontinuous window of ≈ 34 wt %, which is almost twice as wide as analogous 3-arm RSCs and comparable to randomly linked networks. Leveraging this robust cocontinuity and solution-processability, we fabricated a film of interconnected nanoporous PS.

Segmental Dynamics and Vitrification in Associating Copolymer Melts: Role of Cluster Formation, Microdomains, and Cross-Linking

A microscopic statistical mechanical theory of the structure, self-assembly, and activated segmental relaxation is employed to study associating copolymer melts with high attractive sticker fractions, local clustering, and disordered microphase ordering. The stickers are dynamically pinned in a manner that does not affect equilibrium structure which mimics the much slower physical bond breaking process or postassembly cross-linking of sticky monomers. Local sticker clustering and microdomain spatial correlations significantly modify the activated relaxation of nonstickers and glass transition temperature, T g . A re-entrant glass-melting feature is predicted as sticker attraction strength is initially increased corresponding to a speed up of segmental relaxation, and hence reduction of T g relative to the cross-linked homopolymer network. A mechanistic analysis reveals three competing effects: a purely kinetic slowing down of nonstickers down due to cross-linking, disordering of the nonsticker local cage and weakening of effective forces they experience due to sticker physical clustering, and a longer range impact of microdomain scale correlations that results in nonmonotonic dynamical effects. At high enough attraction strength, a qualitative change emerges corresponding to a sticker fraction dependent elevation of T g , which eventually surpasses that of the cross-linked homopolymer network. Dynamically, the new physics arises from a complex evolution of the amplitude of the collective elastic field that dresses the large amplitude mobile segment hopping within a coupled local-nonlocal description of the alpha relaxation. Furthermore, the results are qualitatively consistent with recent experiments on associating PDMS and PPG telechelics of fixed sticker fraction but with chemically different end groups of variable attraction strengths. Finally, possible tests using simulation and the influence of material or model specific interaction potentials and other real world complications are discussed.

Establishing the Stability of Cross-Linked Poly(ethylene oxide) Blended with Poly(pentyl malonate) against Lithium Metal Anodes

This work focuses on an electrolyte obtained by infusing linear poly(pentyl malonate) (PPM) chains into cross-linked poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). A lithium salt is added to enable ion transport. Obtaining this electrolyte is only possible because PPM is miscible with PEO irrespective of salt concentration. The properties of this electrolyte are compared against two benchmarks: an electrolyte obtained by infusing linear PEO into cross-linked PEO and cross-linked PEO with no added linear polymer. Measurements of storage moduli and ion transport efficacies are found to be similar across the three electrolytes, suggesting similar stability behavior against lithium metal anodes, based on current theoretical models. Instead, the PPM infused electrolyte outperforms the other two electrolytes. In the cycling tests, the current supported by the PPM infused electrolyte was a factor of 20 higher than that of the PEO infused electrolyte and a factor of 4 higher than that of the cross-linked PEO electrolyte. In the unidirectional plating experiments, the other two electrolytes fail after about 4 h or less, while the PPM containing electrolyte did not fail during the 140 h testing period. Insight into the nature of failure modes was obtained using synchrotron hard X-ray microtomography.
