Quantum dot (QD)-sensitized photon upconversion follows a multi-step energy transfer process from the QD to transmitter ligand to a soluble annihilator. Using a novel 10-R-anthracene-1,8-diphosphoric acid (R = octyl, 2- hexyldecyl, phenyl) ligand with high binding affinity for CdSe QD surfaces, we demonstrate a photon upconversion process that is limited by the transmitter to annihilator transfer efficiency. Using 1 H NMR spectroscopy, we demonstrate that these bidentate diphosphate ligands rapidly and irreversibly displace two carboxylate ligands. These ligands mediate energy transfer from the photoexcited QDs to a triplet annihilator (1,10-diphenylanthracene), producing overall photon upconversion quantum efficiencies as high as 17%, the highest for QDs with no shells. In conclusion, transient absorption spectroscopy shows that the anthracene dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) ligand supports a 3.4 fold longer triplet state lifetime compared to 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (299.9 ± 9.5 vs 88.2 ± 2.1 μs), increasing the probability of energy transfer.

Single-ion conducting (SIC) polymer electrolytes with a high Li transference number ( t Li + ) have shown the capability to enable enhanced battery performance and safety by avoiding liquid–electrolyte leakage and suppressing Li dendrite formation. However, issues of insufficient ionic conductivity, low electrochemical stability, and poor polymer/electrode interfacial contact have greatly hindered their commercial use. In this work, a Li-containing boron-centered fluorinated SIC polymer gel electrolyte (LiBFSIE) was rationally designed to achieve a high t Li + and high electrochemical stability. Owing to the low dissociation energy of the boron-centered anion and Li + , the as-prepared LiBFSIE exhibited an ionic conductivity of 2 × 10 –4 S/cm at 35 °C, which is exclusively contributed by Li ions owing to a high t Li + of 0.93. Both simulation and experimental approaches were applied to investigate the ion diffusion and concentration gradient in the LiBFSIE and non-cross-linked dual-ion systems. Typical rectangular Li stripping/plating voltage profiles demonstrated the uniform Li deposition assisted by LiBFSIE. The interfacial contact and electrolyte infiltration were further optimized with an in situ UV–vis-initiated polymerization method together with the electrode materials. By virtue of the high electrochemical stability of LiBFSIE, the cells achieved a promising average Coulombic efficiency of 99.95% over 200 cycles, which is higher than that of liquid–electrolyte-based cells. No obvious capacity fading was observed, indicating the long-term stability of LiBFSIE for lithium metal batteries.
A series of supported 3% MoOx catalysts were synthesized by incipient-wetness impregnation of 5%-15% TaO x surface modified γ-Al 2 O 3 support. The catalysts were characterized by in situ spectroscopies (DRIFTS, Raman, UV-vis, XAS) and multiple chemical probes (C 2 H 4 /C 4 H 8 titration, C 3 H 6 -TPSR, steady state propylene metathesis, NH 3 -IR adsorption). The supported tantalum oxide phase was present as surface TaO x sites on the γ-Al 2 O 3 support that capped that Al 2 O 3 surface hydroxyls. The change in available surface hydroxyls caused the subsequent anchoring of MoOx species to occur at different surface hydroxyls. This shifted the anchoring of MoO x species from basic (Al-OH) to neutral (Al 2 -OH) to more acidic (Al 3 -OH) surface hydroxyls as well as perturbation of the remaining alumina surface hydroxyls by the surface TaO x sites. The TaO x surface modified γ-Al 2 O 3 support increased the number of activated surface MoO x sites (Ns) by ~6x and the TOF by ~10x resulting in an increased activity of ~60x. In conclusion, It was found that the specific anchoring surface hydroxyls rather than the extent of oligomerization of the surface MoO x sites control the number of activated MoO x sites and TOF for propylene metathesis. No relationship between the nature of the surface Lewis/Brønsted acid sites and Ns and TOF were found to be present.
Realization of high-density batteries requires the development of anolytes that display highly negative reduction potentials, solubility, and persistence in the charged state. Azobenzenes have garnered interest as potential anolytes for redox flow batteries. Here, we report the synthesis of a family of substituted azobenzene derivatives and evaluation of their solution-phase electrochemical properties. Systematic synthetic derivatization of this scaffold allows (1) access to anolytes of varying solubility, including intrinsically liquid derivatives that represent potential high-density charge carriers; (2) systematic variation of the reduction potential, and in some cases redox inventory, that provides azobenzenes with highly negative reduction potentials; and (3) control of the lifetime of the azobenzene radical anions that result from one-electron reduction. Electrokinetic experiments demonstrated that fast electron transfer occurs for all derivatives examined. Spectroscopic characterization of monoreduced azobenzene derivatives establishes that decomposition of the azobenzene radical anion proceeds via bimolecular disproportionation. Together, these results provide an experimental basis for the optimization of azobenzene anolytes for electrochemical storage applications, including redox flow batteries.

The mussel byssus has long been a source of inspiration for the adhesion community. Recently, adhesive synergy between flanking lysine (Lys, K) and 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA, Y ) residues in the mussel foot proteins (Mfps) has been highlighted. However, the complex topological relationship of DOPA and Lys as well as the interfacial adhesive roles of other amino acids have been understudied. Herein, we study adhesion of Lys and DOPA-containing peptides to organic and inorganic substrates using single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS). We show that a modest increase in peptide length, from K Y to (K Y ) 3 , increases adhesion strength to TiO 2. Surprisingly, further increase in peptide length offers no additional benefit. Additionally, comparison of adhesion of dipeptides containing Lys and either DOPA (K Y ) or phenylalanine (KF) shows that DOPA is stronger and more versatile. We furthermore demonstrate that incorporating a nonadhesive spacer between (K Y ) repeats can mimic the hidden length in the Mfp and act as an effective strategy to dissipate energy.
Electrolyte engineering is critical for developing Li metal batteries. While recent works improved Li metal cyclability, a methodology for rational electrolyte design remains lacking. In this study, we propose a design strategy for electrolytes that enable anode-free Li metal batteries with single-solvent single-salt formations at standard concentrations. Rational incorporation of –CF 2 – units yields fluorinated 1,4-dimethoxylbutane as the electrolyte solvent. Paired with 1 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide, this electrolyte possesses unique Li–F binding and high anion/solvent ratio in the solvation sheath, leading to excellent compatibility with both Li metal anodes (Coulombic efficiency ~ 99.52% and fast activation within five cycles) and high-voltage cathodes (~6 V stability). Fifty-μm-thick Li|NMC batteries retain 90% capacity after 420 cycles with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.98%. Industrial anode-free pouch cells achieve ~325 Wh kg –1 single-cell energy density and 80% capacity retention after 100 cycles. Our design concept for electrolytes provides a promising path to high-energy, long-cycling Li metal batteries.
