State estimation for spacecraft power systems

A state estimator appropriate for spacecraft power systems is presented. Phasor voltage and current measurements are used to determine the system state. A weighted least squares algorithm with a multireference transmission cable model is used. Bad data are identified and resolved. Once the bad data have been identified, they are removed from the measurement set and the system state can be estimated from the remaining data. An observability analysis is performed on the remaining measurements to determine if the system state can be found from the reduced measurement set. An example of the algorithm for a sample spacecraft power system is presented.

The energy separation between the classical and nonclassical isomers of protonated acetylene - An extensive study in one- and n-particle space saturation

The energy separation between the classical and nonclassical forms of protonated acetylene has been reinvestigated in light of the recent experimentally deduced lower bound to this value of 6.0 kcal/mol. The objective of the present study is to use state-of-the-art ab initio quantum mechanical methods to establish this energy difference to within chemical accuracy (i.e., about 1 kcal/mol). The one-particle basis sets include up to g-type functions and the electron correlation methods include single and double excitation coupled-cluster (CCSD), the CCSD(T) extension, multireference configuration interaction, and the averaged coupled-pair functional methods. A correction for zero-point vibrational energies has also been included, yielding a best estimate for the energy difference between the classical and nonclassical forms of 3.7 + or - 1.3 kcal/mol.

A theoretical study of the low-lying states of Ti2 and Zr2

The low-lying states of Ti2 and the valence isoelectronic Zr2 are examined theoretically by means of a multireference configuration-interaction (MRCI) method. MRCI calculations demonstrate that two of the Zr2 states are very low-lying and that the resulting vertical excitation is consistent with the optical spectrum of Zr2. The ground state is predicted for Ti2 on the basis of valence correlation with the MRCI method and the average coupled-pair functional technique. Calculations of the inner-shell correlation effects are estimated and found to lower the 3Delta g state to a ground state, and another to a very low-lying state. The ground state of Ti2 is assigned to 3Delta g since it is lower than the other state at all levels of correlation and is derived from the same atomic asymptote. This conclusion is supported by the lack of an electron-spin resonance signal but contradicts the absence of subcomponents on the Raman spectral lines.

The computation of C-C and N-N bond dissociation energies for singly, doubly, and triply bonded systems

The bond dissociation energies (De) of C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, N2, N2H2, and N2H4 are studied at various levels of correlation treatment. The convergence of De with respect to the one-particle basis is studied at the single-reference modified coupled-pair-functional (MCPF)level. At all levels of correlation treatment, the errors in the bond dissociation energies increase with the degree of multiple bond character. The multireference configuration-interaction (MRCI) De values, corrected for an estimate of higher excitations, are in excellent agreement with those determined using the size-extensive averaged-coupled-pair-functional (ACPF) method. The full-valence complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF)/MRCI calculations are reproduced very well by MRCI calculations based on a CASSCF calculation that includes in the active space only those electrons involved in the C-C or N-N bonds.

Theoretical study of the spectroscopy of B2

A study is made of the singlet, triplet, and quintet states of B2 below 45,000/cm at the multireference configuration-interaction level. The stronger bonding in B2, as compared with Al2, manifests itself in the potential energy curves. In B2, five of the six states dissociating to the ground state atoms are bound, compared with only two for Al2. Radiative lifetimes are reported for the lowest vibrational level of many of the bound triplet states of B2.

Quantum mechanical calculations to chemical accuracy

The accuracy of current molecular-structure calculations is illustrated with examples of quantum mechanical solutions for chemical problems. Two approaches are considered: (1) the coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) with a perturbational estimate of the contribution of connected triple excitations, or CCDS(T); and (2) the multireference configuration-interaction (MRCI) approach to the correlation problem. The MRCI approach gains greater applicability by means of size-extensive modifications such as the averaged-coupled pair functional approach. The examples of solutions to chemical problems include those for C-H bond energies, the vibrational frequencies of O3, identifying the ground state of Al2 and Si2, and the Lewis-Rayleigh afterglow and the Hermann IR system of N2. Accurate molecular-wave functions can be derived from a combination of basis-set saturation studies and full configuration-interaction calculations.

Theoretical study of the low-lying bound states of O2

It is demonstrated that a complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) (2p)/MRCI + Q (multireference configuration interaction with a Davidson correction) description in a (13s8p6d 4f2g)/((5s4p3d 2f1g) atomic natural orbits (ANO) basis set supplemented with diffuse functions provides a quantitative description of the six lowest states of O2. The calculated potentials are within 0.05 eV (1.2 kilocal/mol) of accurate experimental results. The importance of substantially expanding the primitive basis set has been investigated, and it is demonstrated that such expansions yield insignificant improvement in the spectroscopic constants. Potential energy curves have also been reported for the weakly bound states of O2. The 5Pi(g) state is estimated to have a D(e) of 0.16 +/- 0.03 eV. The upper bound of D(e) is found to be sufficiently large that the importance of this state as a precursor for the formation of O2 (b 1Sigma(t)(+)) and O(1S) should be reconsidered.

The study of molecular spectroscopy by ab initio methods

This review illustrates the potential of theory for solving spectroscopic problems. The accuracy of approximate techniques for including electron correlation have been calibrated by comparison with full configuration-interaction calculations. Examples of the application of ab initio calculations to vibrational, rotational, and electronic spectroscopy are given. It is shown that the state-averaged, complete active space self-consistent field, multireference configuration-interaction procedure provides a good approach for treating several electronic states accurately in a common molecular orbital basis.

The structures, binding energies and vibrational frequencies of Ca3 and Ca4: An application of the CCSD(T) method

The Ca3 and Ca4 metallic clusters have been investigated using state-of-the-art ab initio quantum mechanical methods. Large atomic natural orbital basis sets have been used in conjunction with the singles and doubles coupled-cluster (CCSD) method, a coupled-cluster method that includes a perturbational estimate of connected triple excitations, denoted CCSD(T), and the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) method. The equilibrium geometries, binding energies and harmonic vibrational frequencies have been determined with each of the methods so that the accuracy of the coupled-cluster methods may be assessed. Since the CCSD(T) method reproduces the MRCI results very well, cubic and quartic force fields of Ca3 and Ca4 have been determined using this approach and used to evaluate the fundamental vibrational frequencies. The infrared intensities of both the e' mode of Ca3 and the t2 mode of Ca4 are found to be small. The results obtained in this study are compared and contrasted with those from our earlier studies on small Be and Mg clusters.

Theoretical study of the spectroscopy of the alkali oxides LiO, NaO, and KO

A state-averaged complete-active-space self-consistent-field multireference configuration-interaction method is presented to characterize the bound-bound emission from the CPi-2 state into the two lowest ionic states of LiO, NaO, and KO. Ab initio calculations use the experimental results obtained by Woodward et al. (1989) of the emitting state as CPi-2, but indicate that the tentative experimental band assignments are incorrect.

Theoretical study of the lowest 5Pi and 5Sigma(+) states of CO

Large one-particle basis sets and the internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction treatment of electron correlation were used to characterize the lowest 5Pi and 5Sigma(+) states of CO. It was found that the (1)5Sigma(+) state is weakly bound with an r(e) of 4.76 a(0), supporting results of calculations by Rosenkrantz et al. (1992). The (1)5Pi state has a weakly bound outer well and a significantly bound inner well.

Ab initio Potential-Energy Surfaces and Electron-Spin-Exchange Cross Sections for H-O2 Interactions

Accurate quartet- and doublet-state potential-energy surfaces for the interaction of a hydrogen atom and an oxygen molecule in their ground states have been determined from an ab initio calculation using large-basis sets and the internally contracted multireference configuration interaction method. These potential surfaces have been used to calculate the H-O2 electron-spin-exchange cross section; the square root of the cross section (in a(sub 0)), not taking into account inelastic effects, can be obtained approximately from the expressions 2.390E(sup -1/6) and 5.266-0.708 log10(E) at low and high collision energies E (in E(sub h)), respectively. These functional forms, as well as the oscillatory structure of the cross section found at high energies, are expected from the nature of the interaction energy. The mean cross section (the cross section averaged over a Maxwellian velocity distribution) agrees reasonably well with the results of measurements.

Benchmark Full Configuration-Interaction Calculations on HF and NH2

Full configuration-interaction (FCI) calculations are performed at selected geometries for the (sup 1)Sigma(+) state of HCF and the (sup 2)B(sub 1) and (sup 3)A(sub 1) states NH2 using both DZ and DZP Gaussian basis sets. Higher excitations become more important when the bonds are stretched and the SCF reference becomes a poorer zeroth-order description of the wave function. The CASSCF-MRCI procedure gives excellent agreement with the FCI potentials, especially when corrected with a multireference analog of the Davidson correction.

Theoretical Study of the Electric Dipole Moment Function of the CIO Molecule

The potential energy function and electric dipole moment function (EDMF) are computed for CIO Chi(sup 2)Pi using several different techniques to include electron correlation. The EDMF is used to compute Einstein coefficients, vibrational lifetimes, and dipole moments in higher vibrational levels. Remaining questions concerning the position of the maximum of the EDMF may be resolved through experimental measurement of dipole moments of higher vibrational levels. The band strength of the 1-0 fundamental transition is computed to be 12 +/- 2 /sq cm atm in good agreement with three experimental values, but larger than a recent value of 5 /sq cm atm determined from infrared heterodyne spectroscopy. The theoretical methods used include SCF, CASSCF, multireference singles plus doubles configuration interaction (MRCI) and contracted CI, coupled pair functional (CPF), and a modified version of the CPF method. The results obtained using the different methods are critically compared.

The Low-Lying States of AlCu and AlAg

The singlet and triplet states of AlCu and AlAg below about 32 000/cm are studied using the internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction method. A more elaborate study of the X(sup 1)Sum(sup +) ground state of AlCu is undertaken using extended Gaussian basis sets, including the effect of inner-shell correlation and including a perturbational estimate of relativistic effects. Our best estimate of the spectroscopic constants (r(sub 0), DeltaG(sub 1/2), and D(sub 0)) for the X(sup 1)Sum(sup+) state with the experimental values in parentheses are: 4.416(4.420) a(sub 0), 295 (294) /cm, and 2.318 (2.315) eV. The calculations definitively assign the upper state in the observed transition at 14 892/cm to the lowest (sup 1)Prod state. The calculated spectroscopic constants and radiative lifetime for the (sup 1)Prod state are in good agreement with experiment. The calculations support the tentative assignments of Behm et al. for three band systems observed in the visible region between 25 000 and 28 000 / cm. However, the computed spectroscopic constants are in very poor agreement with those deduced from an analysis of the spectra. Analogous theoretical results for AlAg suggest that the (2)(sup 3)Prod, (3)(sup 3)Prod, and (3)(sup 1)Sum(sup +) states account for the bands observed, but not assigned, by Duncan and co-workers.

An Ab Initio Study of the Low-Lying Doublet States of AgO and AgS

Spectroscopic constants (D(sub o), r(sub e), mu(sub e), T(sub e)) are determined for the doublet states of AgO and AgS below approx. = 30000/cm. Large valence basis sets are employed in conjunction with relativistic effective core potentials (RECPs). Electron correlation is included using the modified coupled-pair functional (MCPF) and multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) methods. The A(sup 2)Sigma(sup +) - X(sup 2)Pi band system is found to occur in the near infrared (approx. = 9000/cm) and to be relatively weak with a radiative lifetime of 900 microns for A(sup 2)Sigma(sup +) (upsilon = 0). The weakly bound C(sup 2)Pi state (our notation), the upper state of the blue system, is found to require high levels of theoretical treatment to determine a quantitatively accurate potential. The red system is assigned as a transition from the C(sup 2)Pi state to the previously unobserved A(sup 2)Sigma(sup +) state. Several additional transitions are identified that should be detectable experimentally. A more limited study is performed for the vertical excitation spectrum of AgS. In addition, a detailed all-electron study of the X(sup 2)Pi and A(sup 2)Sigma(sup +) states of AgO is carried out using large atomic natural orbital (ANO) basis sets. Our best calculated D(sub o) value for AgO is significantly less than the experimental value, which suggests that there may be some systematic error in the experimental determination.

The Low-Lying Electronic States of Mg2(+)

The low-lying doublet and quartet states of Mg+ have been studied using a multireference configuration interaction approach. The effect of inner-shell correlation has been included using the core-polarization potential method. The computed spectroscopic constants, lifetimes, and oscillator strengths should help resolve the difference between the recent experiments and previous theoretical calculations.

Theoretical Study of the Low-Lying States of MgN+2

The structure and binding energies of the low-lying states of MgN2+ have been computed at the multireference configuration interaction level of theory. The effect of Mg inner-shell correlation have been included using the core-polarization potential method. The charge-quadrupole interaction results in a linear 2Sigma+ ground state as expected. The excited states can arise from either the interaction of the 2-P state of Mg+ with N2 or from charge transfer states with Mg(sup 2+)N2- bonding character. The lowest lying excited state, 2-B2, is mixture of these two mechanisms, which results in a C2v, geometry with Mg atoms sitting at the N2 bond midpoint. The small barrier in the bending potential exists between this state and the 2-II State which is the lowest lying linear excited state.
