Improving the Nomenclature Around Uncertainty [Slides]

This presentation finds that defining the marginal probability density function (PDF) for nuclear data is important. Additionally, the vocabulary of “means and covariances” and new GNDS 2.0 formats are limited to Gaussian (normal) representations— always incorrect—but clearly of practical significance when uncertainties are large (>40%). Finally, the Triage Solution: declare our current data as containing best estimate (mode) plus variance for a truncated normal or lognormal.

Classification, scale series and nomenclature of lunar charts

Lunar charts are classified with an eye toward solution of special problems of lunar cartography. The initial state of mapping the moon will require charts with scales of 1:5,000,000; 1:1,000,000; 1:250,000; 1:50,000; and 1:10,000.

Nomenclature of polarized light - Elliptical polarization

Alternative handedness and sign conventions for relating the orientation of elliptical polarization are discussed. The discussion proceeds under two headings: (1) snapshot picture, where the emphasis for the convention is contained in the concept of handedness; and (2) angular momentum consideration, where the emphasis for the convention is strongly associated with mathematical convention and the sign of the fourth Stokes parameter.

Contemporary soaring nomenclature

Considerable technical progress took place during the past two decades in the field of soaring. In contrast, basic terminology in many languages is lagging seriously. English, one of the leading languages, is no exception. Because of this situation, misunderstandings occur which under some circumstances may result in undesirable consequences, hindering further technical developments as well as soaring activities. Definitions were established and compiled by mid-1973, followed by minor additions (1974 and 1977).

Nazareth meteorites - Classification and nomenclature

Approved names are established for the six meteorites found in Castro County, Texas; the names and classes of the specimens, which are thought to represent six separate falls, are: (1) Nazareth(a), L6; (2) Nazareth(b), L6; (3) Nazareth(c), H5; (4) Nazareth(d), H5; (5) Nazareth(e), H6; and Nazareth(iron), IIIA. Attention is given to recovery details for the six and electron microprobe analysis results for olivine and low-Ca pyroxene grains in five of the Nazareth chondrites.

The great asteroid nomenclature controversy of 1801

With the almost complete neglect of 19th century asteroid research by professional historians of science, it is scarcely surprising that great gaps exist in our knowledge of that important field. This paper focuses on issue of naming the first asteroid. This seemingly innocuous issue assumed great importance because many believed the object discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi at Palermo Observatory to be the eighth primary planet of the solar system.

From asteroid clusters to families: A proposal for a new nomenclature

Some confusion on the number, reliability, and characteristics of asteroid families is the result of using the single word 'family' for naming asteroid groupings identified in very different ways. Here we propose a new terminology which in our opinion would alleviate this problem.

Origin and use of Martian nomenclature

The history and construction of Martian place names are examined. The 24 specific descriptor terms in use for Mars are defined. Informal names of individual rocks are discussed: the human fondness for informality is evident in the names attached to individual rocks at the Viking Lander sites.
