A novel approach for adaptive skeleton toolpath generation

Industry 4.0 is revolutionizing manufacturing through the integration of automation and real-time data sharing in cyber-physical systems. At the forefront of this revolution is large-format additive manufacturing. In large-format printing, parts are often designed to be an even number of beads wide to produce a completely dense part. However, voids can still arise. This is often due to the part not being an even number of bead widths wide in some areas, or in geometry containing acute angles, as the process of generating closed contours cannot completely fill the space. Voids can be tolerated in smaller models, but in large-format additive manufacturing they may cause mechanical defects. To fill these voids, open loop paths called skeletons are often used, but they are typically limited by the physical constraints defined in the slicing software. To address this, researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have extended skeleton toolpaths via an adaptive methodology. These adaptive skeletons were found to better fill void spaces through manipulation of physical parameters of the build process and were calculated as part of the slicing process.

Strategies for Computer-Aided Discovery of Novel Open-Shell Polymers

Organic π-conjugated polymers with a triplet ground state have been the focus of recent research for their interesting and unique electronic properties, arising from the presence of the two unpaired electrons. These compounds are usually built from alternating electron-donating and electron-accepting monomer pairs which lower the HOMO–LUMO gap and yield a triplet state instead of the typical singlet ground state. In this paper, we use density functional theory calculations to explore the design rules that govern the creation of a ground-state triplet conjugated polymer and find that a small HOMO–LUMO gap in the singlet state is the best predictor for the existence of a triplet ground state, compared to previous use of a pro-quinoidal bonding character. Furthermore, this work can accelerate the discovery of new stable triplet materials by reducing the computational resources needed for electronic-state calculations and the number of potential candidates for synthesis.

Li 8 MnO 6 : A Novel Cathode Material with Only Anionic Redox

In Li-excess transition-metal-oxide cathode materials, anionic oxygen redox can offer high capacity and high voltages, although peroxo and superoxo species may cause oxygen loss, poor cycling performance, and capacity fading. Previous work showed that undesirable formation of peroxide and superoxide bonds is controlled to some extent by Mn substitution, and the present work uses density functional calculations to examine the reasons for this by studying the anionic redox mechanism Li 8 MnO 6 . This material is obtained by substituting Mn for Sn in Li 8 SnO 6 or for Zr in Li 8 ZrO 6 , and we also compare to previous work on those materials. The calculations predict that Li 8 MnO 6 is stable at room temperature (with a band gap of 3.19 eV as calculated HSE06 and 1.82 eV as calculated with the less reliable with PBE+U), and they elucidate the chemical and structural effects involved in the inhibition of oxygen release in this cathode. Throughout the whole delithiation process, only O 2- ions are oxidized. The directional Mn-O bonds formed from unfilled 3d orbitals effectively inhibit the formation of O-O bonds, and the layered structure is maintained even after removing 3 Li per Li 8 MnO 6 formula unit. The calculated average voltage for removal of 3 Li is 3.69 V by HSE06, and the corresponding capacity is 389 mAh/g. The high voltage of oxygen anionic redox and the high capacity result in a high energy density of 1436 Wh/kg. The Li-ion diffusion barrier for the dominant interlayer diffusion path along the c-axis is 0.57 eV by PBE+U. Finally, these results help us to understand the oxygen redox mechanism in a new lithium-rich Li 8 MnO 6 cathode material and contribute to the design of high-energy-density lithium-ion-battery cathode materials with favorable electrochemical properties based on anionic oxygen redox.

Novel features and GPU performance analysis for EM particle transport in the Celeritas code

Celeritas is a new computational transport code designed for high-performance simulation of high-energy physics detectors. This work describes some of its current capabilities and the design choices that enable the rapid development of efficient on-device physics. The abstractions that underpin the code design facilitate low-level performance tweaks that require no changes to the higher-level physics code. We evaluate a set of independent changes that together yield an almost 40% speedup over the original GPU code for a net performance increase of 220× for a single GPU over a single CPU running 8.4M tracks on a small demonstration physics app.

Novel transition dynamics of topological solitons

Continuous phase transitions can be classified into ones characterized by local-order parameters and others that need additional topological constraints. The critical dynamics near the former transitions have been extensively studied, but the latter is less understood. We fill this gap in knowledge by studying the transition dynamics to a parity-breaking topological ground state called the chiral soliton lattice in quantum chromodynamics at finite temperature, baryon chemical potential, and an external magnetic field. We find a slowing down of the soliton’s translational motion as the critical magnetic field approaches, while the local relaxation rate to the solitonic state remains finite. The time required to converge to the stationary state strongly depends on the symmetry of the initial configuration, determining whether translational motion occurs during the dynamic process. A Novel Resilience-Oriented Cellular Grid Formation Approach for Distribution Systems with Behind-the-Meter Distributed Energy Resources

This paper presents a resilience-oriented cellular grid formation approach to achieve scalable and reconfigurable community microgrid operations for distribution systems with behind-the-meter distributed energy resources. A set of interconnected solar photovoltaics, energy storage systems, and load is termed as a cell, implying a subset of the grid that can operate independently using its own resources. Cells are identified such that each cell inherently has sufficient energy resources to black start and can provide a certain level of backup power for its load under the loss of utility power supply. The proposed cell formation approach builds on a unique self-organizing map-based method (SomRes) to quantify a system's resilience. Using SomRes and a non-dominated sorting-based genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), a fast and efficient cell formation algorithm is developed to identify cells in a distribution system that are resilient against extreme events. The efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a numerical model of a real distribution feeder in Colorado, United States.

Techno-economic Analysis of Novel PV Plant Designs for Extreme Cost Reductions

A techno-economic analysis is underway examining the cost and performance of future large-scale photovoltaic (PV) plant components, including bifacial modules, tandem modules, increased plant voltage architectures, and module-level power electronics. Integration of these components into PV plant designs is compared with current PV technologies based on levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). Baseline models are developed and validated against recorded PV plant performance data. Expected cost and performance data of future PV technologies are incorporated into the baseline models. An evolutionary algorithm is utilized to optimize PV plant configuration, technology combination, and LCOE. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the bifacial module analysis.

CdSexTe1-x/CdTe Devices with Reduced Interface Recombination Through Novel Back Contacts and Group-V Doping

Since excellent carrier lifetimes and front interface electronic quality are now achieved, rear interface recombination can limit V OC in CdSexTe1-x/CdTe solar cells. Several back-contact structures for devices were fabricated using combinations of tellurium, aluminum oxide, amorphous silicon, and indium tin oxide (ITO). Time-resolved photoluminescence was used to characterize such structures. We show increasingly improved interface passivation through the subsequent use of aluminum oxide, amorphous silicon, and ITO. Additionally, we show that arsenic-doped absorbers form a more passive interface with numerous back contact structures.

Leveraging observed soil heterotrophic respiration fluxes as a novel constraint on global-scale models

Microbially-explicit models may improve understanding and projections of carbon dynamics in response to future climate change, but their fidelity in simulating global-scale soil heterotrophic respiration (RH), a stringent test for soil biogeochemical models, has never been evaluated. We used statistical global RH products, as well as 7,821 daily site-scale RH measurements, to evaluate the spatio-temporal performance of one first-order decay model (CASA-CNP) and two microbially-explicit biogeochemical models (CORPSE and MIMICS) that were forced by two different climate datasets. CORPSE and MIMICS did not provide any measurable performance improvement; instead, the models were highly sensitive to the meteorological input data used to drive them. Spatial RH variability was generally well simulated except in the northern middle latitudes (~50°N) and arid regions; models captured the seasonal variability of RH well, but showed more divergence in tropic and arctic regions. Our results demonstrate that the next generation of biogeochemical models shows promise, but also needs to be improved for realistic spatio-temporal variability of RH. Finally, we emphasize the importance of net primary production, soil moisture, and soil temperature inputs, and that jointly evaluating soil models for their spatial (global scale) and temporal (site scale) performance provides crucial benchmarks for improving biogeochemical models.
