Flux-pumped impedance-engineered broadband Josephson parametric amplifier

Broadband quantum-limited amplifiers play a critical role in the single-shot readout of superconducting qubits, but a popular implementation, the traveling wave parametric amplifier, involves a complex design and fabrication process. Here, we present a simple design for a Josephson parametric amplifier, using a lumped element resonator comprising a superconducting quantum interference device whose useful bandwidth is enhanced with an on-chip impedance-matching circuit. Additionally, we demonstrate a flux-coupling geometry that maximizes the coupling to the Josepson loop and minimizes spurious excitation of the amplifier resonant circuit. The amplifier, which operates in a flux-pumped mode, is demonstrated with a power gain of more than 20dB over a bandwidth of about 300MHz, where approximate noise measurements indicate quantum-limited pehrformance. A procedure is given for optimizing the bandwidth for this kind of amplifier, using a linearized circuit simulation while minimizing non-linearities.

Analysis of pump-to-signal noise transfer in two-stage ultra-broadband optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification

In optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA), pump temporal intensity modulation is transferred to the chirped-signal spectrum via instantaneous parametric gain and results in contrast degradation of the recompressed signal. We investigate, for the first time to our knowledge, the pump-to-signal noise transfer in a two-stage ultra-broadband OPCPA pumped by a single laser and show the dependence of pump-induced signal noise, characterized both before and after pulse compression, on the difference in pump-seed delay in the two stages. We demonstrate an up-to-15-dB reduction of the pump-induced contrast degradation via pump-seed delay optimization. Experiments and simulations show that, even when parametric amplifiers are operated in saturation, the pump-seed delay can be used to minimize the pump-induced contrast degradation that is attributed largely to the noises from the unsaturated edges of the pulse and that of the beam.

Latched detection of zeptojoule spin echoes with a kinetic inductance parametric oscillator

When strongly pumped at twice their resonant frequency, nonlinear resonators develop a high-amplitude intracavity field, a phenomenon known as parametric self-oscillations. The boundary over which this instability occurs can be extremely sharp and thereby presents an opportunity for realizing a detector. Here, we operate such a device based on a superconducting microwave resonator whose nonlinearity is engineered from kinetic inductance. The device indicates the absorption of low-power microwave wavepackets by transitioning to a self-oscillating state. Using calibrated pulses, we measure the detection efficiency to zeptojoule energy wavepackets. We then apply it to measurements of electron spin resonance, using an ensemble of 209 Bi donors in silicon that are inductively coupled to the resonator. We achieve a latched readout of the spin signal with an amplitude that is five hundred times greater than the underlying spin echoes.

Noncolinear optical parametric oscillator for broadband nanosecond pulse-burst CARS diagnostics in gases

We report demonstration of broadband nanosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) using a burst-mode-pumped noncolinear optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) has been achieved at a pulse repetition rate of 40 kHz. The NOPO is pumped with the 355-nm output of a burst-mode Nd:YAG laser at 50 mJ/pulse for 45 pulses and produces an output centered near 607 nm, with a bandwidth of 370 cm –1 at energies of 5 mJ/pulse. A planar BOXCARS phase matching scheme uses the broadband NOPO output as the Stokes beam and the narrowband 532-nm burst-mode output for the two CARS pump beams for single-laser-shot nitrogen thermometry in near adiabatic H 2 /air flames at temperatures up to 2200 K.

Direct solar-pumped iodine laser amplifier

In order to evaluate the feasibility of the solar pumped dye laser, the parametric study of a dye laser amplifier pumped by a solar simulator and flashlamp was carried out, and the amplifier gains were measured at various pump beam irradiances on the dye cell. Rhodamine 6G was considered as a candidate for the solar pumped laser because of its good utilization of the solar spectrum and high quantum efficiency. The measurement shows that a solar concentration of 20,000 is required to reach the threshold of the dye. The work to construct a kinetic model algorithm which predicts the output parameter of laser was progressed. The kinetic model was improved such that there is good agreement between the theoretical model and experimental data for the systems defined previously as flashlamp pumped laser oscillator, and the long path length solar pumped laser.

Complete Frequency-Bin Bell Basis Synthesizer

Here we report the experimental generation of all four frequency-bin Bell states in a single versatile setup via successive pumping of spontaneous parametric down-conversion with single and dual spectral lines. Our scheme utilizes intensity modulation to control the pump configuration and offers turn-key generation of any desired Bell state using only off-the-shelf telecommunication equipment. We employ Bayesian inference to reconstruct the density matrices of the generated Bell states, finding fidelities ≥97% for all cases. Additionally, we demonstrate the sensitivity of the frequency-bin Bell states to common-mode and differential-mode temporal delays traversed by the photons comprising the state—presenting the potential for either enhanced resolution or nonlocal sensing enabled by our complete Bell basis synthesizer.

Liquid rocket booster study. Volume 2, book 4, appendices 6-8: Reports of Rocketdyne, Pratt and Whitney, and TRW

For the pressure fed engines, detailed trade studies were conducted defining engine features such as thrust vector control methods, thrust chamber construction, etc. This was followed by engine design layouts and booster propulsion configuration layouts. For the pump fed engines parametric performance and weight data was generated for both O2/H2 and O2/RP-1 engines. Subsequent studies resulted in the selection of both LOX/RP-1 and O2/H2 propellants for the pump fed engines. More detailed analysis of the selected LOX/RP-1 and O2/H2 engines was conducted during the final phase of the study.

Injection-seeded operation of a Q-switched Cr,Tm,Ho:YAG laser

Single-frequency Tm,Ho:YAG lasers operating near 2 microns are attractive sources for several applications including eye-safe laser radar (lidar) and pumping of AgGaSe2 parametric oscillators for efficient generation of longer wavelengths. As part of a program to develop a coherent lidar system using Tm,Ho:YAG lasers, a diode laser-pumped tunable CW single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) Cr:Tm:Ho:YAG laser and a flashlamp-pumped single-transverse-mode Q-switched Cr,Tm,Ho:YAG laser were developed. The CW laser was used to injection-seed the flashlamp-pumped laser, resulting in SLM Q-switched output. Operational characteristics of the CW and Q-switched lasers and injection-seeding results are reported.

OH Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) Measurements for the Study of High Pressure Flames: An Evaluation of a New Laser and a New Camera System

Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) is used by the Combustion Branch at the NASA Glenn Research Center (NASA Glenn) to assess the characteristics of the flowfield produced by aircraft fuel injectors. To improve and expand the capabilities of the PLIF system new equipment was installed. The new capabilities of the modified PLIF system are assessed by collecting OH PLIF in a methane/air flame produced by a flat flame burner. Specifically, the modifications characterized are the addition of an injection seeder to a Nd:YAG laser pumping an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and the use of a new camera with an interline CCD. OH fluorescence results using the injection seeded OPO laser are compared to results using a Nd:YAG pumped dye laser with ultraviolet extender (UVX). Best settings of the new camera for maximum detection of PLIF signal are reported for the controller gain and microchannel plate (MCP) bracket pulsing. Results are also reported from tests of the Dual Image Feature (DIF) mode of the new camera which allows image pairs to be acquired in rapid succession. This allows acquisition of a PLIF image and a background signal almost simultaneously. Saturation effects in the new camera were also investigated and are reported.

Perturbative Diagonalization for Time-Dependent Strong Interactions

We present a systematic method to implement a perturbative Hamiltonian diagonalization based on the time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation. Applying our method to strong parametric interactions we show how, even in the dispersive regime, full Rabi model physics is essential to describe the dressed spectrum. Our results unveil several qualitatively different results, including realization of large energy-level shifts, tunable in magnitude and sign with the frequency and amplitude of the pump mediating the parametric interaction. Crucially, Bloch-Siegert shifts, typically thought to be important only in the ultrastrong or deep-strong coupling regimes, can be rendered large even for weak dispersive interactions to realize points of exact cancelation of dressed shifts (“blind spots”) at specific pump frequencies. The framework developed here highlights the rich physics accessible with time-dependent interactions and serves to significantly expand the functionalities for control and readout of strongly interacting quantum systems.

Direct solar-pumped iodine laser amplifier

During this period the parametric studies of the iodine laser oscillator pumped by a Vortek simulator were carried out before amplifier studies. The amplifier studies are postponed to the extended period after completing the parametric studies. In addition, the kinetic modeling of a solar-pumped iodine laser amplifier, and the experimental work for a solar pumped dye laser amplifier are in progress. This report contains three parts: (1) a 10 W CW iodine laser pumped by a Vortek solar simulator; (2) kinetic modeling to predict the time to lasing threshold, lasing time, and energy output of solar-pumped iodine laser; and (3) the study of the dye laser amplifier pumped by a Tamarack solar simulator.

Interplay between gain and loss in arrays of nonlinear plasmonic nanoparticles: toward parametric downconversion and amplification

With the help of a theoretical model and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations based on the hydrodynamic–Maxwell model, we examine the effect of difference-frequency generation (DFG) in an array of L-shaped metal nanoparticles (MNPs) characterized by intrinsic plasmonic nonlinearity. The outcomes of the calculations reveal the spectral interplay between gain and loss in the vicinity of the fundamental frequency of the localized surface plasmon resonances. Subsequently, we identify different array thicknesses and pumping regimes facilitating parametric amplification and spontaneous parametric downconversion. Our results suggest that the parametric amplification regime becomes feasible on a scale of hundreds of nanometers and spontaneous parametric downconversion on the scale of tens of nanometers, opening up new exciting opportunities for developing building blocks of photonic metasurfaces.

Effect of the pump beam profile and wavefront on the amplified signal wavefront in optical parametric amplifiers

We present a theoretical and experimental analysis of the signal phase introduced by the pump-beam wavefront and spatial profile during optical parametric amplification (OPA) process. The theory predicts the appearance of an additional wavefront in the amplified signal beam that is proportional to the spatial derivative of the pump-beam wavefront. The effect of the pump-beam profile on the signal-beam wavefront is also investigated. Our experiments tested these theoretical predictions by comparing the wavefront of the signal beam before and after amplification in a multi-joule broadband OPA. The measured signal wavefront was shown to have the expected dependence on the pump-beam profile and wavefront. These results can be considered when designing petawatt-scale ultrabroadband optical parametric chirped-pulse–amplification systems.

High-efficiency narrow-bandwidth KTP optical parametric oscillator for kHz–MHz planar laser-induced fluorescence

The electronic excitation of key combustion species or flow tagging of chemical species requires a narrowband tunable UV source. In this work, a potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) burst-mode optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by a 532 nm laser is developed to generate a spectrally narrow signal and an idler output with 1.48 ± 0.19 cm −1 bandwidth without the need for injection seeding. The idler (1410–1550 nm range) is further mixed with 355 or 266 nm to generate 284 or 226 nm for OH or NO planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), respectively, with up to 1.9% conversion efficiency from 1064 nm to the UV. MHz-rate burst profiles are reported, and OH and NO PLIF are demonstrated in a rotating detonation combustor at rates up to 200 kHz.
