Errors inherent to the graphic analysis of CFD solutions are discussed. Consideration is given to contouring, plotting of vector fields, particle tracing, and the computation of flow functions involving integration or differentiation. Many of the problems addressed are the direct result of knowing the function values only at grid points, not in the interior of the grid cells.
Navier-Stokes computations of three-dimensional vortical flows over a round-edged double-delta wing and a tangent-ogive forebody are performed using an implicit upwind finite-difference scheme. Computed particle traces are compared with experimental oil-flow streaks.
Report reviews recent progress in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Addresses state of art in terms of methods, examples of solutions, and computer technology. Provides examples of CFD solutions of aerospace and fluid-physics problems to illustrate recent progress. Aerospace solutions include rotor/stator velocity vectors from three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code for turbomachinery, pressure distributions from simulation of aeroelasticity of wing surface-pressure contours on four-bladed helicopter rotor in forward flight, and particle traces about several aerospace vehicles. Computer technology covers supercomputers, scientific work stations, local supercomputing networks, and remote access to supercomputers.
A 3-D Navier-Stokes code was developed for analysis of turbomachinery blade rows and other internal flows. The Navier-Stokes equations are written in a Cartesian coordinate system rotating about the x-axis, and then mapped to a general body-fitted coordinate system. Streamwise viscous terms are neglected using the thin layer assumption, and turbulence effects are modelled using the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model. The equations are discretized using finite differences on stacked C-type grids and are solved using a multistage Runge-Kutta algorithm with a spatially varying time step and implicit residual smoothing. Calculations were made of the flow around a supersonic throughflow fan blade. The fan was designed as a key component in a supersonic cruise engine. The 3-D calculations were done on a 129x29x33 grid and took 50 minutes of cpu time. Comparisons with the quasi-3-D results show minor differences in loading due to 3-D effects. Particle traces show nearly 2-D flows near the pressure surface, but large secondary flows within the suction surface boundary layer. The horseshoe vortex ahead of the leading edge is clearly seen.
The hardware and software currently used for visualization of fluid dynamics at NASA Ames is described. The software includes programs to create scenes (for example particle traces representing the flow over an aircraft), programs to interactively view the scenes, and programs to control the creation of video tapes and 16mm movies. The hardware includes high performance graphics workstations, a high speed network, digital video equipment, and film recorders.
A capability was developed that makes it possible to apply to measured flow field data the visualization tools developed to display numerical solutions for computational fluid dynamic problems. The measurement monitor surface (MMS) procedure was applied to the analysis of flow field measurements within a low aspect ratio transonic axial flow fan rotor obtained with 2-D laser anemometry. The procedure generates input for the visualization tools developed to display numerical solutions for computational fluid dynamics problems. The relative Mach number contour plots obtained by this method resemble the conventional contour plots obtained by more traditional methods. The results show that the MMS procedure can be used to generate input for the multidimensional processing and analysis tools developed for data from numerical flow field simulations. They show that an experimenter can apply the MMS procedure to his data and then use an interactive graphics program to display scalar quantities like the Mach number by profiles, carpet plots, contour lines, and surfaces using various colors. Also, flow directionality can be shown by display of vector fields and particle traces.

A 3-D flow analysis code was used to compute the design speed operating line of a transonic fan rotor, and the results were compared with experimental data. The code is an explicit finite difference code with an algebraic turbulence model. The transonic fan, called rotor 67, was tested experimentally at NASA-Lewis with conventional aerodynamic probes and with user anemometry and was included as one of the AGARD test cases for the computation of internal flows. The experimental data are described. Maps of total pressure ratio and adiabatic efficiency versus mass flow were computed and are compared with the experimental maps, with good agreement. Detailed comparisons between calculations and experiment are made at two operating points, one near peak efficiency and the other near stall. Blade-to-blade contour plots are used to show the shock structure. Comparisons of circumferentially integrated flow quantities downstream of the rotor show spanwise distributions of several aerodynamic parameters. Calculated Mach number distributions are compared with laser anemometer data within the blade row and the wake to quantify the accuracy of the calculations. Particle traces are used to show the nature of secondary flow.
We estimate the flux of gamma-rays that result from collisions of high energy galactic cosmic rays with the solar atmosphere. An important aspect of our model is the propagation of cosmic rays through the magnetic fields of the inner solar systems. We use diffusion to model propagation down to the bottom of the corona. Below the corona we trace particle orbits through the photospheric fields to determine the location of cosmic ray interactions in the solar atmosphere and evolve the resultant cascades. For our nominal choice of parameters, we predict an integrated flux of gamma rays (at 1 AU) of F(E(sub gamma) greater than 100 MeV) approximately = 5 x 10(exp -8)/sq cm sec. This can be an order of magnitude above the galactic background and should be observable by the Energetic Gamma Ray experiment telescope (EGRET).

The Gas Generator Oxidizer Turbine (GGOT) Blade is being analyzed by various investigators under the NASA MSFC sponsored Turbine Stage Technology Team design effort. The present work concentrates on the tip clearance region flow and associated losses; however, flow details for the passage region are also obtained in the simulations. The present calculations simulate the rotor blade row in a rotating reference frame with the appropriate coriolis and centrifugal acceleration terms included in the momentum equation. The upstream computational boundary is located about one axial chord from the blade leading edge. The boundary conditions at this location were determined by using a Euler analysis without the vanes to obtain approximately the same flow profiles at the rotor as were obtained with the Euler stage analysis including the vanes. Inflow boundary layer profiles are then constructed assuming the skin friction coefficient at both the hub and the casing. The downstream computational boundary is located about one axial chord from the blade trailing edge, and the circumferentially averaged static pressure at this location was also obtained from the Euler analysis. Results were obtained for the 3-D baseline GGOT geometry at the full scale design Reynolds number. Details of the clearance region flow behavior and blade pressure distributions were computed. The spanwise variation in blade loading distributions are shown, and circumferentially averaged spanwise distributions of total pressure, total temperature, Mach number, and flow angle are shown at several axial stations. The spanwise variation of relative total pressure loss shows a region of high loss in the region near the casing. Particle traces in the near tip region show vortical behavior of the fluid which passes through the clearance region and exits at the downstream edge of the gap.
Paper discusses algorithms used to make visible displays from arrays of numerical data representing computed flow fields. Intended to help researchers discern flow structures. Displays include, principally, contours and particle traces on two-dimensional and three-dimensional grids.
Report discusses sources of error in graphical display and analysis of flow fields simulated numerically by computers. Sources of error explored by examples of graphical techniques and errors they introduce in depiction of flow fields computed from Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Specific graphical techniques examined: contouring, plotting arrows on pictures to represent three-dimensional vectors, and particle tracing.
The transition flight performance of a representative Short Take-Off or Vertical Landing (STOVL) model is investigated using side-by-side experimental and numerical simulations. The model consists of a 60 deg cropped delta wing planform; a simple fuselage shape blended to the wing; and tandem, circular, high-pressure-air lift jets that exit perpendicular to the flat lower surface. The configuration was chosen to minimize the geometric modeling complexity while retaining the important flow physics of the lift-jet/aerodynamic surface interaction. Three-dimensional, turbulent Navier-Stokes computations are made using a multiple, overset grid scheme. Results are presented and compared with the measured forces and pressures for the model at a freestream Mach number of 0.14 and a 10 deg angle-of-attack without lift jets operating. Computed surface flow patterns and particle traces show that the simulation predicts primary and secondary wing leading edge vortices for these conditions.
A three-dimensional code for rotating blade-row flow analysis was developed. The space discretization uses a cell-centered scheme with eigenvalues scaling for the artificial dissipation. The computational efficiency of a four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme is enhanced by using variable coefficients, implicit residual smoothing, and a full-multigrid method. An application is presented for the NASA rotor 67 transonic fan. Due to the blade stagger and twist, a zonal, non-periodic H-type grid is used to minimize the mesh skewness. The calculation is validated by comparing it with experiments in the range from the maximum flow rate to a near-stall condition. A detailed study of the flow structure near peak efficiency and near stall is presented by means of pressure distribution and particle traces inside boundary layers.
NASA Lewis is currently engaged in a research effort as a team member of the High Alpha Technology Program (HATP) within NASA. This program utilizes a specially equipped F/A-18A, the High Alpha Research Vehicle (HARV), in an ambitious effort to improve the maneuverability of high performance military aircraft at low subsonic speed, high angle of attack conditions. The overall objective of the Lewis effort is to develop inlet technology that will ensure efficient airflow delivery to the engine during these maneuvers. One part of the Lewis approach utilizes computational fluid dynamics codes to predict the installed performance of inlets for these highly maneuverable aircraft. Wind tunnel tests were a major component of the Lewis program. Since the available wind tunnel was small (9 x 15 ft) as compared to the scale of the model of the F/A-18A (19.78 percent), there were questions about the capability to obtain useful inlet performance data. The blockage effects were expected to be very large. This report represents the results of an analysis to determine how the wind tunnel walls effect inlet performance at several angles of attack. The predictions for the external particle traces along the fuselage indicate the influence of the wind tunnel side wall under the model is greater at 30 deg angle of attack than at 50 deg angle of attack on the under Leading Edge Extension (LEX) vortex trajectory. The side wall above the model appears to have negligible influence on the under LEX vortex. This may be due to the LEX acting as 'shield' to the upper wall effects. As expected, the wind tunnel has a significant influence on the external forces. The lift and drag coefficients increase significantly for the wind tunnel model as compared to free stream conditions. The wind tunnel had a small effect on the inlet recovery and on inlet total pressure distortion patterns. The predicted recoveries for the wind tunnel model are within one percentage point of the model recoveries in free stream conditions.

Particle traces in the near tip region show vortical flow behavior of the fluid which passes through the clearance region and exits at the downstream edge of the gap. In an effort to reduce clearance flow losses, the mini-shroud concept was proposed by the Pratt & Whitney design team. Calculations were performed on the GGO geometry with the mini-shroud. Results of these calculations indicate that the mini-shroud does not significantly affect the flow in the passage region, and although the tip clearance flow is different, the mini-shroud does not seem to prevent the above-mentioned vortical flow behavior. Since both flow distortion and total pressure losses are similar for both geometries, the addition of the mini-shroud does not seem to reduce the tip clearance flow effects.
Under a NASA MSFC SBIR Phase 1 effort an interactive software package has been developed for the analysis of discrete (particulate) phase dynamics in two-phase flows in which the discrete phase does not significantly affect the continuous phase. This package contains a Graphical User Interface (based on the X Window system and the Motif tool kit) coupled to a particle tracing program, which allows the user to interactively set up and run a case for which a continuous phase grid and flow field are available. The software has been applied to a solid rocket motor problem, to demonstrate its ease of use and its suitability for problems of engineering interest, and has been delivered to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.
