Correlation pattern between Goddard Range And Range Rate /GRARR/ system optimum antenna polarization and IMP orbit position
Applications of the optical computer include an approach for increasing the sharpness of images obtained from the most powerful electron microscopes and fingerprint/credit card identification. The information-handling capability of the various optical computing processes is very great. Modern synthetic-aperture radars scan upward of 100,000 resolvable elements per second. Fields which have assumed major importance on the basis of optical computing principles are optical image deblurring, coherent side-looking synthetic-aperture radar, and correlative pattern recognition. Some examples of the most dramatic image deblurring results are shown.
A series of measured radiated field patterns correlated with defined in-duct conditions is presented, along with a second series of radiation measurements for multiple mode propagation, with individual mode amplitudes and phases at duct termination as well as with angular positions of higher-order stationary duct modes relative to the plane of the radiated field measurement. Though incomplete, these experimental data should prove useful for comparisons with theoretical predictions in testing analytical procedures and prediction techniques.
Most highland total rock samples define a single U-Pb isochron which corresponds to a metamorphism age of about 3.9 aeons. This age is also obtained for internal U-Pb isochrons for some of these samples. The data on 18 rock samples range from concordant samples with U-238/Pb-206 ratio of about 1.2 to discordant ones with U-238/Pb-206 ratio of about 0.02. This feature, coupled with a correlated pattern of U-238/Pb-204 ratios, indicates that Pb was extensively mobilized at about 3.9 aeons. The observed Pb-U fractionation is essentially due to Pb volatilization during the metamorphic events. Volatile Pb transport is not accompanied by similar effects in Rb and must therefore be attributed to a specific process. Rb-Sr internal isochrons for the same rocks determine distinct metamorphic events in the interval 3.85 to 4.00 aeons. It is concluded that highland samples from widely separated areas bear the imprint of an event or series of events in a narrow time interval which can be identified with a cataclysmic impacting rate of the moon at about 3.9 aeons, although diffrentiation by internal magma generation cannot be excluded.
The quiet north polar cleft at 1400 km was studied by Isis-2 instruments, and data from the retarding potential analyzer and the cylindrical electrostatic probe show that thermal plasma density fluctuations are distributed in a region between 75 deg and 82 deg invariant latitude and approximately dawn to dusk. Cleft shape and shape variations are described. Thermal ions and thermal electrons usually fluctuated together, but suprathermal electrons fluctuated independently. Data on thermal plasma patterns correlates fairly well with observations of soft particles and auroral optical emissions and not as well with measurements of high-energy particles. The data suggest that the energy source for the thermal irregularities is associated with soft particles and that precipitating high-energy particles do not drive the thermal plasma at these altitudes.
Results are reported from the first low frequency radio receiver to be transported into the Jupiter magnetosphere. Dramatic new information was obtained both because Voyager was near or in Jupiter's radio emission sources and also because it was outside the relatively dense solar wind plasma of the inner solar system. Extensive radio arcs, from above 30 MHz to about 1 MHz, occurred in patterns correlated with planetary longitude. A newly discovered kilometric wavelength radio source may relate to the plasma torus near Io's orbit. In situ wave resonances near closest approach define an electron density profile along the Voyager trajectory and form the basis for a map of the torus. Studies in progress are outlined briefly.

Modulation patterns recognized with extensive calculations. Set of shift registers contains patterns of 1's and 0's representing presence or absence of received signal in designated time/frequency bins. Pattern in shift registers correlated with pattern of expected signal by shifting each cell to right according to expected pattern and summing shift-register outputs in analog summing network. Useful in applications requiring identification of smaller pattern of 1-bit data within larger matrix of such data.
A comparative analysis of satellite-observed haze patterns and ground-based aerosol measurements is carried out for July 20-23, 1978. During this period, a significant regional air pollution episode existed across the northeastern United States, accompanied by widespread haze, reduced surface visibility, and elevated sulfate levels measured by the Sulfate Regional Experiment (SURE) network. The results show that the satellite-observed haze patterns correlate closely with the area of reported low surface visibility (less than 4 mi) and high sulfate levels. Quantitative information on total aerosol loading derived from the satellite-digitized data, using an atmospheric radiative transfer model, agrees well with the results obtained from the ground-based measurements.
In this investigation of relationships between mid-latitude 500 mb anomalies and tropical heating anomalies on the time scales of weeks to seasons are studied using outgoing IR to characterize the tropical convection heating. The data are first used to form 5-day means and the mean seasonal cycle and the interannual variability of seasonal means are then removed. The time scales considered are then between about 10 days and 90 days. By correlating the mid-latitude height anomalies with the tropical precipitation anomalies it can be shown that, on the time scales considered here, the predominant correlation patterns are those associated with Rossby waves propagating from mid-latitudes into the tropics and influencing the tropical convection. The mid-latitude Rossby waves can significantly influence convection to within 5 degrees of the equator.
Correlations between UV extinction parameters and diffuse band strengths are south, using a data base of 50 stars with recently measured extinction curves. A novel aspect of this study is that the basic dependence of most interstellar parameters on E(B-V) (or, nearly equivalently, on the total hydrogen column density) has been largely canceled out. After this cancellation, a weak correlation is found between the 4430 A diffuse band and the 2175 A extinction feature. No other correlations are found. These results support a molecular origin for the 5780 A and 6284 A bands. It is speculated that the correlation pattern found for the 4430 A band can be explained if this band originates in reactions on disordered grain surfaces.
Pipeline architecture with parallel multipliers and adders speeds calculation of weighted sums. Picture-element values and partial sums flow through delay-adder modules. After each cycle or time unit of calculation, each value in filter moves one position right. Digital integrated-circuit chips with pipeline architecture rapidly move 35 X 35 two-dimensional convolutions. Need for such circuits in image enhancement, data filtering, correlation, pattern extraction, and synthetic-aperture-radar image processing: all require repeated calculations of weighted sums of values from images or two-dimensional arrays of data.
Standardized 700 mb heights at 126 grid points over the Northern Hemisphere during 1948-80 were used to quantify the persistence of the heights from one month to the next (using various antecedent period lengths) and to determine predictive skill for calendar-month 700 mb heights using antecedent and simulated prognostic height information. The calculations showed that optimum period length and its corresponding average pattern correlation vary widely over the course of the year, being largest in summer and winter. The skill of models using simulated prog heights was found to be much superior to those using antecedent heights.
A pattern correlation is found between the 30-mb zonal average ozone and temperature at 70 deg S during the October months and the 100-mb Eliassen-Palm (E-P) fluxes for the seven Septembers of 1979 to 1985, suggesting a dynamical influence on the long term trend of ozone and temperature values in the Southern Hemisphere for this period. For the August E-P fluxes and September values, this relationship is found to hold for temperature while not being strong for ozone. No explanation is found for the anomalously warm temperature values noted for both September and October 1982.
A new empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of winter 500 mb geopotential height anomalies in the Southern Hemisphere is presented. An earlier EOF analysis prefiltered the anomalies to exclude wavenumbers 5 and higher; the present analysis does not. The different preprocessing of data affects the results. All three distinct planetary flow regimes identified in the winter circulation of the Southern Hemisphere by a pattern correlation method are captured by the new set of EOFs; only two of those regimes were captured by the earlier set. The new results, therefore, lend further support to the idea that EOFs point to distinct planetary flow regimes.
Two algorithms were developed which utilized multi-sensor analysis techniques to complement the current Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) safety monitoring system. The first algorithm analyzed the accumulative error between actual and predicted values of the engine parameter set, while the second algorithm combined these error terms into a response pattern and correlated each pattern with a standard pattern. These algorithms were applied to twelve SSME anomalous test firings and were found to produce improved failure detection times in eight of those twelve compared to the current engine safety monitoring system. Of the eight detected anomalous test firings, the first algorithm detected all eight, while the second algorithm detected seven of the eight. No false alarms were indicated by either algorithm for twelve nominal test firings. An initial parametric study of these algorithms for optimized parameter selection is presented and algorithm robustness to sensor failure is demonstrated.
Ultrasonic velocity measurement techniques were used to evaluate the effects of oxidation and reduction on the elastic properties, global microstructure and oxygen content of the YBa2Cu3O(7-x) ceramic superconductor for samples ranging from 70 to 90 pct. of theoretical density. Bulk density, velocity, and elastic modulus generally increased with increasing oxygen content upon oxidation, and this behavior was reversible. Velocity image patterns were similar after oxidation and reduction treatments for a 90 pct. dense sample, although the velocity value at any given point on the sample was changed following the treatments. The unchanging pattern correlated with destructive measurements showing that the spatial pore distribution (fraction and size) was not measurably altered after the treatments. Changes in superconducting behavior, crystal structure, and grain structure were observed consistent with changes in oxygen content.
