The Entry Plasma Sheath and Its Effects on Space Vehicle Electromagnetic Systems, Volume 1

This symposium is the fourth in a series on the plasma sheath. The first three were held in Boston, Massachusetts, and were sponsored by the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories. The papers included in the symposium cover theoretical and experimental results of research and flight tests of many different specific aspects of the general problem of plasma sheath degradation of reentry vehicle electromagnetic systems. Only the newer advances and more recent developments in the field are included in the Fourth Plasma Sheath Symposium, with no particular attempt being made to review the general background and history of the problem or to cover those aspects discussed in the previous symposia. Flight data from both NASA and DOD programs are included.

VII. Plasma Effects

Radio communication with space probes requires sending signals through the Earth's ionosphere and usually the solar wind. During planetary flybys, the signal may also pass through the ionosphere of another planet. These ionized media can perturb the radio signal in a variety of ways. Examples of these perturbations are variations in the electrical length between the spacecraft and the ground station, Faraday rotation of linearly polarized signals, amplitude and phase scintillations, and spectral and angular broadening. These plasma effects can have undesirable influences on telemetry performance and thus need to be understood from a communications engineering viewpoint. The plasma effects are, however, useful from a scientific viewpoint, since the effects on the communications link can often be inverted to estimate the physical conditions in the plasma.

Novel additive manufacturing for plasma facing materials ‐ creating a research pathway for minority students

This project addresses two critical and intertwined challenges in fusion energy, namely the shortage of a broadly trained scientific workforce and the lack of scalable manufacturing solutions for plasma-facing components (PFCs). Through a collaboration among Florida International University (FIU), Miami Dade College (MDC), and Purdue University, the project established structured, reproducible educational and research pathways that recruit and advance students from institutions historically outside the fusion energy enterprise, building the human capital that this field urgently needs. The project integrates the complementary research strengths of FIU and Purdue to investigate flash sintering as a transformative processing route for tungsten-based PFCs. Unlike conventional sintering approaches, flash sintering offers rapid densification at significantly reduced thermal budgets, making it a compelling candidate for fabricating complex tungsten geometries that must withstand extreme plasma-facing environments. Systematic experimental and modeling efforts will elucidate the fundamental mechanisms governing microstructure evolution, grain boundary chemistry, and thermomechanical response during flash sintering — knowledge that is presently lacking but essential for translating this technology into reliable manufacturing practice. The convergence of workforce development and cutting-edge manufacturing research positions this project to deliver measurable, durable impact: a pipeline of fusion-ready researchers cultivated through expanded institutional partnerships, and a validated materials processing framework that accelerates domestic readiness for next-generation fusion reactor construction.

In Situ Tracking of Nonthermal Plasma Etching of ZIF-8 Films

Surface characterization is critical for understanding the processes used for preparing catalysts, sorbents, and membranes. Nonthermal plasma (NTP) is a process that achieves high reactivity at low temperatures and is used to tailor the surface properties of materials. In this work, we combine the capabilities of infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) with NTP for the in situ interrogation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) thin films to probe modifications in the material induced by oxygen and nitrogen plasmas. The IRRAS measurements in oxygen plasma reveal etching of organic ligands with sequential removal of the methyl group and imidazole ring and with the formation of carbonyl moieties (C═O). In contrast, nitrogen plasma induces mild etching and grafting of nitrile groups (−C≡N). Scanning electron microscopy imaging shows that oxygen plasma, at prolonged times, significantly degrades the ZIF-8 film at the grain boundaries. Treatment of ZIF-8 membranes using mild plasma conditions yields a fivefold enhancement for H 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 ideal selectivities and an eightfold enhancement for CO 2 /N 2 ideal selectivity. Additionally, the new tools described here can be used for spectroscopic in situ tracking of plasma-induced chemistry on thin films in general.

Final Report: A Multi-Channel Fusion Product

The goal of this project was to measure charged fusion products from the d(d,p)t reaction in MAST-U plasmas as a function of time and position with good energy resolution using a system of up to six charged particle detectors. The data from this new diagnostic will make it possible to determine the neutral beam ion density profile as a function of R, z, and t with reduced model dependency and contribute new information to a global analysis of fast ion diagnostic data needed for the determination of the fast ion distribution function (velocity space tomography).

A First-Principles Study of the Structural and Thermo-Mechanical Properties of Tungsten-Based Plasma-Facing Materials

Tungsten (W) and tungsten alloys are being considered as leading candidates for structural and functional materials in future fusion energy devices. The most attractive properties of tungsten for the design of magnetic and inertial fusion energy reactors are its high melting point, high thermal conductivity, low sputtering yield, and low long-term disposal radioactive footprint. Despite these relevant features, there is a lack of understanding of how the structural and mechanical properties of W-based alloys are affected by the temperature in fusion power plants. In this work, we present a study on the thermo-mechanical properties of five W-based plasma-facing materials. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations are combined with the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) theory to investigate the electronic, structural, mechanical, and thermal properties of these W-based alloys as a function of temperature. The coefficient of thermal expansion, temperature-dependent elastic constants, and several elastic parameters, including bulk and Young’s modulus, are calculated. Our work advances the understanding of the structural and thermo-mechanical behavior of W-based materials, thus providing insights into the design and selection of candidate plasma-facing materials in fusion energy devices.

Strong gradient neoclassical transport in the plateau regime

Strong gradient regions in tokamaks such as the pedestal or internal transport barriers are regions of reduced turbulence where neoclassical transport can play a dominant role. In pedestals, gradient lengths comparable to the ion poloidal gyroradius have been measured. Standard neoclassical theory can miss important strong gradient effects in these regions because it assumes that the gradient length scales of density, temperature and potential are larger than the ion poloidal gyroradius. We extend plateau regime neoclassical theory into regions of gradients of the order of the ion poloidal gyroradius to capture strong gradient effects on transport processes in the pedestal and internal transport barriers. The fundamental idea behind our new framework is to keep a scale separation between the orbit widths and the gradient length scales by performing a large aspect ratio expansion. In the plateau regime, strong gradients cause poloidal variation that is in–out as well as up–down asymmetric. We study two different test cases assuming either radial force balance or the absence of turbulence and show that strong gradient effects can enhance or reduce standard neoclassical theory predictions in the plateau regime in strong gradient regions.

Studies of laser stimulated photodetachment from nanoparticles for particle charge measurements

Determining nanoparticle charge is more challenging than that for microparticles due to change in the particle size during the synthesis substantial plasma property variations, and difficulties in visualizing individual particles, rendering conventional microparticle charge diagnostics ineffective in dusty plasma. In this work, we utilized laser-stimulated photodetachment (LSPD) to deduce the mean charge of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles were grown in an Ar/C 2 H 2 mixture using a capacitively coupled RF discharge and the LSPD induced changes in the electron current monitored by a cylindrical Langmuir probe. LSPD signals were obtained and analyzed across different dust growth phases. The prolonged decay of electron current pulses was attributed to the presence of residual negative ions, caused by the effective electrostatic trapping of these ions and the potential post—LSPD re-formation of new ones. The particle charge was estimated by combining the laser-stimulated photodetachment signal from the probe with the dust density obtained from laser-light extinction using the measured nanoparticle size distribution. For a nanoparticles size range of approximately 100–250 nm and mean diameter of $d$ p ∼154.37 nm, the effective mean charge was estimated to be $\langle$$Q$$\rangle$ d $≈$ 37 elementary charge units. The measured charge values are lower than those predicted by orbital motion limited theory, which may be attributed to significant electron depletion in the nanodusty plasma. LSPD results in Ar/C 2 H 2 nano-dusty plasma confirm the applicability of this method for estimating individual nanoparticle charges. However, it has also been demonstrated that electron detachment from residual background negative ions can influence the detachment current decay and must be carefully considered.

Statistical Study of Energy Dissipation in Magnetic Structures During Turbulent Reconnection in the Earth's Magnetotail

Magnetic reconnection is a ubiquitous plasma phenomenon that plays a critical role in particle heating and energization. During reconnection, the topology of magnetic field rearranges, depositing energy into the surrounding plasma through bulk flow, thermal heating, or non-thermal particle acceleration. While the pathways of this transformation from magnetic energy into kinetic have been studied extensively in recent years through theoretical or case-by-case observations, comprehensive statistical studies remain limited. In this paper, we present a statistical investigation using data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, and detail the particle energization mechanisms in magnetic structures found near reconnecting regions in turbulent Earth's magnetotail. We find that electrons with motion perpendicular to the magnetic field dominate $\vec{j}$ ⋅ $\vec{E}$ dissipation. In contrast to the conventional picture of unidirectional energy transfer to particles by laminar two-dimensional (2D) reconnection, we find that energy exchange within magnetic structures during turbulent reconnection tends to be bidirectional with only a small positive bias from electromagnetic fields to particles. Specific electron energization mechanisms are quantified, including those due to parallel electric field, Fermi energization from curvature drift, betatron heating from magnetic field inhomogeneity, and polarization drift.

Growth of deuterium supersaturated surface layer with increasing ion flux and fluence in plasma-exposed tungsten

Deuterium supersaturated surface layer (DSSL) in tungsten, a few nm thick layer exhibiting extremely high deuterium content (> 5%), has been studied as a function of deuterium plasma ion flux and fluence. Tungsten samples were exposed at 400 K and deuterium ion energy of ∼ 60 eV. The deuterium ion flux spanned over an order of magnitude, being 7.3 × 10 20 , 4.2 × 10 21 , and 3.8 × 10 22 D/m 2 . The fluence ranged from 3.4 × 1024 to 3.4 × 1025 D/m2. The samples and their deuterium content were analyzed by nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). The largest thickness of DSSL was found to be around 10.5 nm and was observed in the case of the highest exposure flux and fluence, whereas the layer was only about 3.8 nm thick in the case of the lowest value of the two parameters. The thickness of the DSSL was found to monotonically increase with both deuterium flux and fluence. Finally, similar to the thickness, the estimated D concentration seems to follow the same trend, increasing from the lowest value of around 3 at.% to the highest value of around 5 at.%.

A Chemist’s Guide to Solid-State Qubits: Diamond Color Centers as Embedded Vacancy-Centered Molecules

Diamond point defects or color centers are at the crux of solid-state quantum technology applications, from computing to sensing. Modeling molecular qubits has advanced by leaps and bounds mainly due to the advanced quantum mechanical (QM) tools in the arsenal of quantum chemists for modeling (isolated) molecular systems, which should be easily translatable for analogous systems in the solid state. Here, we simulate a series of diamond defects: a carbon vacancy (V C ) and second row substitutions that are adjacent to a V C or D C V C , with D = B, N, and O, to evaluate their magnetic and optical properties. We applied molecular orbital principles, an embedded cluster method, and a multiconfigurational QM theory to computationally characterize the above-mentioned defects for a multitude of spin, charge, and excited states. Our computational approach delivered high-quality QM insights that compare well with experiments. Furthermore, with this framework, we confirm the spin-triplets B C V C – and O C V C 0 to be analogous to N C V C – , with calculated bright transitions that respectively correspond to UV (3.80 eV) and blue (2.65 eV) light absorption and emission lifetimes (τ) of 2.3 and 5.6 ns, which are higher in energy and more short-lived (and thus brighter) than that for N C V C – : green (2.26 eV), τ = 9.5 ns.

Adapting High-Resolution X-Ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometers to Transform MFE Plasma Diagnostics

The aim of this project was to begin the transformation of magnetic fusion energy (MFE) X-ray diagnostics by applying detector technology developed over the past several decades by the astrophysics community. We installed and operated an X-ray microcalorimeter detector system under fusion-relevant plasma conditions at the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST). X-ray microcalorimeter spectrometers combine the best characteristics of instrumentation currently available on fusion devices: the high spectral resolution of crystal spectrometers (2 eV) and broadband coverage provided by pulse-height analysis systems. These spectrometers have small port-access requirements, a key advantage for future MFE experiments. This new plasma diagnostic technique will satisfy the need for multispecies impurity ion data by providing absolute measurements of impurity core accumulation, and it will provide the core impurity ion temperature. This project was a joint effort between Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and researchers at the Wisconsin Plasma Physics Laboratory (WiPPl) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison). Low thermal budget dopant activation in shallow junctions of implanted Si via Tunable plasma enhanced annealing

Low thermal budget (LTB) annealing has become increasingly critical for shallow junctions as semiconductor devices are scaled down. Plasma Enhanced Annealing (PEA) has emerged as a promising LTB annealing process, however its mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, arsenic and boron implanted silicon wafers were subjected to helium or argon ion bombardment generated by annealing plasmas under controlled ion energies and doses in a home-built annealing reactor. The structural and electrical changes were characterized by four-point probe measurements, secondary ion mass spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. A pronounced reduction in sheet resistance, accompanied by a decrease in the damage layer thickness demonstrates the surface selective annealing capability of PEA process. Comparative studies using He and Ar plasmas and related ion bombardment reveal a dependence of activation efficacy on both ion species and the dopant implantation profile. Furthermore, a multi-step annealing mechanism is proposed, consisting of an initial (low dose) structural recovery stage followed by the generation of “extended” defects and concluded at large doses by an enhanced dopant activation. The proposed annealing kinetics are thought to be controlled by ion flux, dose and energy. Finally, these results highlight PEA as an effective, surface-selective, LTB approach for shallow-dopant activation and near surface annealing, and provide mechanistic insights into PEA processes.
