Long range radio tracking of sea turtles and polar bear: Instrumentation and preliminary results

Instrumentation developed for studies of path behavior of the green sea turtle and migration movement of polar bear is described. Preliminary results bearing on navigation ability in these species are presented. Both species operate in difficult environments, and the problems faced in the design of electronic instrumentation for these studies are not completely specified at this time. However, the critical factors yet to be understood are primarily related to the behavior of instrumented animals. The data obtained with these experimental techniques are included, first to illustrate the technique and, second to provide initial preliminary results bearing on animal navigation.

Nonuniform flow field generation for supersonic compressor stator development: Design and preliminary results

Design and preliminary results are given for a technique which can generate a nonuniform flow similar to the discharge of an impulse supersonic compressor rotor. The technique utilizes a carefully contoured, two-dimensional blunt body in a conventional hypersonic wind tunnel to generate the required flow field. To show the effects of the flow vorticity, a cascade of impulse-type blades was tested in this test stream. Some preliminary performance data are given along with comparison with previously determined uniform flow results.

An integrated computer system for preliminary design of advanced aircraft.

A progress report is given on the first phase of a research project to develop a system of Integrated Programs for Aerospace-Vehicle Design (IPAD) which is intended to automate to the largest extent possible the preliminary and detailed design of advanced aircraft. The approach used is to build a pilot system and simultaneously to carry out two major contractual studies to define a practical IPAD system preparatory to programing. The paper summarizes the specifications and goals of the IPAD system, the progress to date, and any conclusion reached regarding its feasibility and scope. Sample calculations obtained with the pilot system are given for aircraft preliminary designs optimized with respect to discipline parameters, such as weight or L/D, and these results are compared with designs optimized with respect to overall performance parameters, such as range or payload.

Turbulence flight director analysis and preliminary simulation

A control column and trottle flight director display system is synthesized for use during flight through severe turbulence. The column system is designed to minimize airspeed excursions without overdriving attitude. The throttle system is designed to augment the airspeed regulation and provide an indication of the trim thrust required for any desired flight path angle. Together they form an energy management system to provide harmonious display indications of current aircraft motions and required corrective action, minimize gust upset tendencies, minimize unsafe aircraft excursions, and maintain satisfactory ride qualities. A preliminary fixed-base piloted simulation verified the analysis and provided a shakedown for a more sophisticated moving-base simulation to be accomplished next. This preliminary simulation utilized a flight scenario concept combining piloting tasks, random turbulence, and discrete gusts to create a high but realistic pilot workload conducive to pilot error and potential upset. The turbulence director (energy management) system significantly reduced pilot workload and minimized unsafe aircraft excursions.

Preliminary Study of Capsule Recovery for the First Series of Project Mercury Orbital Flights

This report contains the results of a preliminary study of the search and. recovery operations required. for the safe and. expeditious return of the Mercury Recovery Capsule in the first series of orbital flights. The study is concerned primarily with the high-probability impact areas in the Atlantic Ocean. Emphasis is placed on safe recovery within reasonable time at least cost. A preliminary study of this nature is not able to provide final answers to all of the problems; the report instead constitutes a "first look" at the overall operation. Much of the report is therefore devoted to basic data, the building blocks from which recovery systems can be assembled and evaluated. These include the performance characteristics, reliability, and cost of the vehicles and equipment which may be used, and their compatibility with one another, with the capsule, and with the expected environment. The availability of vehicles and equipment has also been considered., although it is appreciated. that this may change from week to week where the forces are drawn from the military services. consideration of alternative vehicles, equipments, and systems, and their evaluation from the standpoint of effectiveness and. cost. While the equipment considered. is generally expected to be operational throughout 1960, consideration is also given to more advanced schemes which might effect reductions in recovery time, cost, or dependence upon the military forces.

Preliminary design polymeric materials experiment

A typical Advanced Technology Laboratory mission flight plan was developed and used as a guideline for the identification of a number of experiment considerations. The experiment logistics beginning with sample preparation and ending with sample analysis are then overlaid on the mission in order to have a complete picture of the design requirements. The results of this preliminary design study fall into two categories. First specific preliminary designs of experiment hardware which is adaptable to a variety of mission requirements. Second, identification of those mission considerations which affect hardware design and will require further definition prior to final design. Finally, a program plan is presented which will provide the necessary experiment hardware in a realistic time period to match the planned shuttle flights. A bibliography of all material reviewed and consulted but not specifically referenced is provided.

Preliminary evaluation of the contaminant induced environment for the space shuttle orbiter

A preliminary evaluation of the on-orbit induced environment from identified major sources of contamination for the STS shuttle orbiter is presented. A contamination computer mathematical model is discussed that was used to develop the description and predictions of the induced environment along with the extent and physical makeup of the molecular induced environment from these sources. The predicted induced molecular environment from each source is evaluated against current Space Shuttle Program on-orbit contamination control criteria. The flash evaporator vents and the VCS 25-lb thrust engines are shown to significantly exceed applicable contamination control criteria and were the subject of extensive evaluation. Preliminary conclusions concerning the contaminant potential of these sources along with recommendations for various measures of contamination control regarding the shuttle orbiter design and operational activities are made.

Integrated payload and mission planning, phase 3. Volume 2: Logic/Methodology for preliminary grouping of spacelab and mixed cargo payloads

The logic and methodology for a preliminary grouping of Spacelab and mixed-cargo payloads is proposed in a form that can be readily coded into a computer program by NASA. The logic developed for this preliminary cargo grouping analysis is summarized. Principal input data include the NASA Payload Model, payload descriptive data, Orbiter and Spacelab capabilities, and NASA guidelines and constraints. The first step in the process is a launch interval selection in which the time interval for payload grouping is identified. Logic flow steps are then taken to group payloads and define flight configurations based on criteria that includes dedication, volume, area, orbital parameters, pointing, g-level, mass, center of gravity, energy, power, and crew time.

Gravity gradient preliminary investigations, part 2: Lunar tidal gravity gradients and stresses (exhibit C)

Preliminary analysis of the gravity gradients associated with gravity tides on the moon caused by the earth indicates that the relative changes in the gradients are very irregular, and large, and about 15 times greater than those experienced on earth. Thus gradients, in preference to gravity tides themselves, may well be an important key in correlating tide effects with lunar transient events and moonquakes, and also in determining triggering mechanisms for crustal movement and faulting. Preliminary analysis of lunar crustal stresses and strains caused by lunar gravity tides indicates that these factors may be more direct causative agents or triggering mechanisms. In particular, the cubic dilation undergoes relatively large changes and is about 11 times greater on the moon than on earth. Thus it should be correspondingly more important.

Development of a preliminary design of a method to measure the effectiveness of virus exclusion during water process reclamation at zero-G

Organon Diagnostics has developed, under NASA sponsorship, a monitoring system to test the capability of a water recovery system to reject the passage of viruses into the recovered water. In this system, a non-pathogenic marker virus, bacteriophage F2, is fed into the process stream before the recovery unit and the reclaimed water is assayed for its presence. An engineering preliminary design has been performed as a parallel effort to the laboratory development of the marker virus test system. Engineering schematics and drawings present a preliminary instrument design of a fully functional laboratory prototype capable of zero-G operation.
