An air quality index-based multistage type-2-fuzzy interval-stochastic programming model for energy and environmental systems management under multiple uncertainties

Highlights: • A multistage type-2-fuzzy interval-stochastic programming (MTIP) method is developed. • Air quality index (AQI) is introduced to manage energy and environmental systems. • AQI-MTIP model is formulated and results for Tianjin's EES are generated. • Impacts of environmental requirements on energy systems is analyzed. • Results can provide support for making effective pollutant mitigation policy. In this study, a multistage type-2-fuzzy interval-stochastic programming (MTIP) method is developed, which extends upon the existing multistage stochastic programming (MSP) by allowing uncertainties expressed as probabilistic distributions, interval values and type-2 fuzzy sets to be effectively incorporated within the optimization framework. Through coupling air quality index (AQI) with MTIP, an AQI-MTIP model is formulated for energy and environmental systems (EES) management of Tianjin. A number of scenarios based on changed AQIs are examined to analyze the impacts of environmental requirements on the city's energy system. Results indicate that (i) with the improvement of environmental requirement, utilization of clean energies (especially natural gas) is provoked markedly; (ii) PM{sub 2.5} is the primary pollutant, 64.50% of which should be reduced each period to maintain the city's air quality at a health-safe level. These findings can help decision makers adjust energy structure, make effective mitigation strategy, and gain deep insight into the relationship between energy consumption and environmental requirement.

A multistage stochastic programming model for a multi-period strategic expansion of biofuel supply chain under evolving uncertainties

Here, we develop a multistage, stochastic mixed-integer model to support biofuel supply chain expansion under evolving uncertainties. By utilizing the block-separable recourse property, we reformulate the multistage program in an equivalent two-stage program and solve it using an enhanced nested decomposition method with maximal non-dominated cuts. We conduct extensive numerical experiments and demonstrate the application of the model and algorithm in a case study based on the South Carolina settings. The value of multistage stochastic programming method is also explored by comparing the model solution with the counterparts of an expected value based deterministic model and a two-stage stochastic model.

Comparison of Optimal Energy Management Strategies Using Dynamic Programming, Model Predictive Control, and Constant Velocity Prediction

Due to the recent advancements in autonomous vehicle technology, future vehicle velocity predictions are becoming more robust which allows fuel economy (FE) improvements in hybrid electric vehicles through optimal energy management strategies (EMS). A real- world highway drive cycle (DC) and a controls-oriented 2017 Toyota Prius Prime model are used to study potential FE improvements. We proposed three important metrics for comparison: (1) perfect full drive cycle prediction using dynamic programming, (2) 10-second prediction horizon model predictive control (MPC), and (3) 10-second constant velocity prediction. These different velocity predictions are put into an optimal EMS derivation algorithm to derive optimal engine torque and engine speed. The results show that the constant velocity prediction algorithm outperformed the baseline control strategy but underperformed the MPC strategy with an average 1.58% and 2.45% of FE improvement with highway and city-highway DC. Also, using a 10-second prediction window MPC strategy provided FE improvement results close to the full drive cycle prediction case. MPC has the potential to achieve 60%-65% and 70% - 80% of global FE improvement over highway and city-highway DC respectively.

Light Water Reactor Sustainability Program Modeling of Cu Precipitate Contributions to Reactor Pressure Vessel Steel Microstructure Evolution and Embrittlement

This report summarizes the lower-length-scale effort during FY 2017 in developing simulation capabilities for the mesoscale: models for microstructure evolution and plasticity in reactor pressure vessel steels. During operation, reactor pressure vessels undergo hardening and embrittlement caused by irradiation induced defect accumulation and irradiation enhanced solute precipitation. Both defect production and solute precipitation initiate on the atomic scale and manifest their eventual effects as degradation in the engineering scale properties. To predict the engineering scale property degradation, multiscale modeling and simulation capabilities are needed to better understand the microstructure evolution and to connect the microstructure feature evolution to the engineering scale material properties. In this report the development of coupling across different length scale models to understand the multi-physics property dedgration problem is discussed. The development of coupling a lattice kinetic Monte Carlo code to cluster dynamics to capture irradiation enhanced diffusion in the formation of defects is summarized. The implementation of a cluster dynamics model with Grizzly to predict Cu percipitate formation is discussed. A summary of the coupling of crystal plasticity and cluster dynamics to predict the effect on reactor pressure steel hardening is given.

Hybrid programming-model strategies for GPU offloading of electronic structure calculation kernels

To address the challenge of performance portability and facilitate the implementation of electronic structure solvers, we developed the basic matrix library (BML) and Parallel, Rapid O(N), and Graph-based Recursive Electronic Structure Solver (PROGRESS) library. The BML implements linear algebra operations necessary for electronic structure kernels using a unified user interface for various matrix formats (dense and sparse) and architectures (CPUs and GPUs). Focusing on density functional theory and tight-binding models, PROGRESS implements several solvers for computing the single-particle density matrix and relies on BML. In this paper, we describe the general strategies used for these implementations on various computer architectures, using OpenMP target functionalities on GPUs, in conjunction with third-party libraries to handle performance critical numerical kernels. In this study, we demonstrate the portability of this approach and its performance in benchmark problems.
