Hilbert-Curve Fractal Antenna With Radiation- Pattern Diversity

A printed, folded, Hilbert-curve fractal microwave antenna has been designed and built to offer advantages of compactness and low mass, relative to other antennas designed for the same operating frequencies. The primary feature of the antenna is that it offers the advantage of radiation-pattern diversity without need for electrical or mechanical switching: it can radiate simultaneously in an end-fire pattern at a frequency of 2.3 GHz (which is in the S-band) and in a broadside pattern at a frequency of 16.8 GHz (which is in the Ku-band). This radiation-pattern diversity could be utilized, for example, in applications in which there were requirements for both S-band ground-to-ground communications and Ku-band ground-to-aircraft or ground-to-spacecraft communications. The lack of switching mechanisms or circuitry makes this antenna more reliable, easier, and less expensive to fabricate than it otherwise would be.

A flight study of tone radiation patterns generated by inlet rods in a small turbofan engine

This paper presents a flight study of tone radiation patterns from a small turbofan engine and compares results with similar static test stand data and a recently developed radiation theory. An interaction tone was produced by a circumferential array of inlet rods placed just upstream of the fan blades. Overhead and sideline flight directivity patterns showed cut-on of a dominant single mode occurred where predicted and the absence of any other significant circumferential or radial modes. In general, good agreement was found between measured flight and static data, with small differences being attributed to inlet geometry and/or forward speed effects. Good agreement was also obtained between flight data and theory for directivity pattern shape, however, the theory consistently predicted higher values for peak radiation angle over a wide range of frequency.

Far-field radiation patterns of Y and T shaped arrays with Chebyshev loading

The far-field radiation patterns for Chebyshev loaded Y- and T-shaped array antennas are given for a number of cases. Included are full- and half-length loaded array arms. The goal of the investigation is to determine the effect of different Chebyshev loading arrangements on this type of array. It is found that in both the Y- and T-shaped arrays, the main lobes are defined by the shape of the array and that the level of the side-lobes is mainly dependent on the Chebyshev loading (that is, complete or partial).
