Aviation's role in earth resources surveys

The role of satellites designed to make a wide variety of earth observations is discussed along with the renewed interest in the use of aircraft as platforms for similar and complementary earth resources surveys. Surveys covering the areas of forestry, agriculture, hydrology, oceanography, geology, and geography are included. Aerials surveys equipped for nonphotographic remote sensing and aircraft flights synchronized with satellite observations to provide correlated data are discussed. Photographs are shown to illustrate preliminary results from several of the test sites.

Sensitive Botanical Resources Surveys and Vegetation Mapping for the LLNL Sitewide Environmental Impact Statement, Arroyo Mocho, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Alameda County, California

At the request of Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), Nomad Ecology (Nomad) conducted sensitive botanical resource surveys, and vegetation mapping and classification of the 17 acres surrounding the Arroyo Mocho pumping station and the access road to the pumping station (Arroyo Mocho). The results of these efforts will provide supporting information for a Site-wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS). These surveys were conducted during the months of April and May 2020, and March 2021. A total of three special status plant species were recorded within Arroyo Mocho. All three species – Hospital Canyon larkspur (Delphinium californicum subsp. interius), Jepson’s woolly sunflower (Eriophyllum jepsonii), and Michael’s rein orchid (Piperia michaelii) – were not previously recorded within the study area at Arroyo Mocho. Special status plant species known from the study area total three rare plant occurrences (populations4), which represent an estimated 50 rare plant individuals. This total of all special status plant species breaks down to one occurrence of California Rare Plant Rank (CRPR) 1 & 2 species (42 individuals), and 2 occurrences of CRPR 3 & 4 species (8 individuals). A total of nine vegetation communities were mapped at Arroyo Mocho, of which two are considered Sensitive Natural Communities.

Manned operation of earth resources surveys from space.

The Earth Resources Experiment Package (EREP) which will be flown on the Skylab in 1973 is discussed. The EREP facility includes a multispectral photographic facility (2 camera system), an infrared spectrometer, a multispectral scanner, a microwave radiometer/scatterometer and altimeter, and an L-band radiometer. It also includes a control and display panel, a viewfinder tracking system, and a 28-track magnetic tape recorder. The tasks performed by the crew in the experiment are examined.

Techniques for computer-aided analysis of ERTS-1 data, useful in geologic, forest and water resource surveys

Forestry, geology, and water resource applications were the focus of this study, which involved the use of computer-implemented pattern-recognition techniques to analyze ERTS-1 data. The results have proven the value of computer-aided analysis techniques, even in areas of mountainous terrain. Several analysis capabilities have been developed during these ERTS-1 investigations. A procedure to rotate, deskew, and geometrically scale the MSS data results in 1:24,000 scale printouts that can be directly overlayed on 7 1/2 minutes U.S.G.S. topographic maps. Several scales of computer-enhanced "false color-infrared" composites of MSS data can be obtained from a digital display unit, and emphasize the tremendous detail present in the ERTS-1 data. A grid can also be superimposed on the displayed data to aid in specifying areas of interest.

The development of machine technology processing for earth resource survey

The following technologies are considered for automatic processing of earth resources data: (1) registration of multispectral and multitemporal images, (2) digital image display systems, (3) data system parameter effects on satellite remote sensing systems, and (4) data compression techniques based on spectral redundancy. The importance of proper spectral band and compression algorithm selections is pointed out.

Earth Resources Survey and the Space Shuttle

The impact that the shuttle is expected to have on the Earth Resources Program and several concepts for exploiting the shuttle characteristics are discussed. The utilization of the space shuttle in its sortie mode for earth resources and the application of an earth observations standard package to earth resources missions were studied.

Microwave remote sensing from space for earth resource surveys

The concepts of radar remote sensing and microwave radiometry are discussed and their utility in earth resource sensing is examined. The direct relationship between the character of the remotely sensed data and the level of decision making for which the data are appropriate is considered. Applications of active and a passive microwave sensing covered include hydrology, land use, mapping, vegetation classification, environmental monitoring, coastal features and processes, geology, and ice and snow. Approved and proposed microwave sensors are described and the use of space shuttle as a development platform is evaluated.

Land resources survey for the state of Michigan

The usefulness of ERTS-1 satellite imagery as an information source for a statewide inventory of Michigan's land resources is documented. The project is currently relying on photointerpretation of MSS photography and computed processed results. The first task completed was a 1:500,000 scale land use map of the state in four classes: urban, forest, water, and agriculture and other. This map was constructed from existing (pre-ERTS-1) information sources including federal, state and county maps, and aerial photography. An ERTS color IR photomosaic for the entire state will also be constructed at a scale of 1:250,000. The Institute is currently working on tape processed data that will include both recognition data as well as a UTM coordinate addressing capability so that the final tape can be inputed directly into computerized land use and transportation corridor analysis models.
