Evaluating the Utility of Pressure Scanners for Unsteady Pressure Measurements in Wind Tunnel Characterization of the Space Launch System

In many aerodynamic measurement applications, the ability to make time-accurate measurements with pressure scanners provides practical advantages over making the same measurements directly using flush-mounted transducers. The pneumatic distortion due to the tubing between the sensing module and surface port limits the usefulness of such measurements to averaged, steady data only. This issue has restricted the application of pressure scanners for unsteady pressure measurements in wind tunnel and flight-testing applications. The Wiener-filtered inverse system response model has been proven to be effective in reconstructing complex unsteady pressure signals acquired remotely using pressure scanners. In this work, the feasibility of using pressure scanning systems for time-resolved pressure measurements in the NASA Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Wind Tunnel was evaluated. Results demonstrated good agreement between the reference transducers and reconstructed pressure scanner measurements up to frequencies of approximately 500 Hz.

CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition1)

The Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) product contains one hour of instantaneous Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The SSF combines instantaneous CERES data with scene information from a higher-resolution imager such as Visible/Infrared Scanner (VIRS) on TRMM or Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua. Scene identification and cloud properties are defined at the higher imager resolution and these data are averaged over the larger CERES footprint. For each CERES footprint, the SSF contains the number of cloud layers and for each layer the cloud amount, height, temperature, pressure, optical depth, emissivity, ice and liquid water path, and water particle size. The SSF also contains the CERES filtered radiances for the total, shortwave (SW), and window (WN) channels and the unfiltered SW, longwave (LW), and WN radiances. The SW, LW, and WN radiances at spacecraft altitude are converted to Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) fluxes based on the imager defined scene. These TOA fluxes are used to estimate surface fluxes. Only footprints with adequate imager coverage are included on CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1the SSF which is much less than the full set of footprints on the CERES ES-8 product. CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition2B)

LONGWAVE UNFILTERED RADIANCE↗

Rotational Millimeter-Wave Shoe Scanner Using the Discrete Fourier Transform for Backprojection-Based Image Reconstruction

An active 3D microwave / millimeter-wave shoe scanner was previously developed at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) using two linear arrays scanned over a rectilinear aperture. The radar system chirps a frequency sweep from 10-40 GHz. These frequencies allow imaging through optically opaque material such as leather, rubber, plastics, and other dielectrics. The system was designed to detect concealed items in the soles of shoes while allowing people to leave their shoes on through a security checkpoint. To shrink the footprint of the system, a new iteration of the design has been developed that scans the two linear arrays over a circular aperture. This new footprint opens the possibility of it being installed in the floor of a cylindrical millimeter-wave body scanner. The backprojection-based multilayer dielectric image reconstruction developed at PNNL can easily handle arbitrary spatial sampling, accommodating the new rotational shoe scanner design. Commonly, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) is used to efficiently compute the range response from the data collected by the system as a preprocessing step to the backprojection algorithm. It was found that converting to range using the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) directly has some advantages over the FFT. For example, nonlinear and non-uniform frequency sweeps can easily be compensated for during the computation of the DFT and only the range bins of interest need to be computed and their spacing can be chosen arbitrarily. Because the range conversion step of the image reconstruction is the fastest part of the process there is very little speed penalty for using the DFT over the FFT and it can even increase the speed of image reconstruction when the ranges of interest are fewer than the total span that is calculated in the FFT.

GEANT4 Simulations on Faraday Cup Design for PIP-II Laser Wire Scanner System

The PIP-II accelerator upgrade at Fermilab represents a groundbreaking leap forward in high-energy physics research. This ambitious initiative involves enhancing Fermilab's accelerator complex by replacing the current linear accelerator with a warm front end (WFE) capable of accelerating H- beams up to 2.1 MeV. Subsequently, a superconducting linac further accelerates these beams up to 800 MeV. To precisely measure the transverse beam profile, a combination of traditional wire scanners at the WFE section and Laser wire scanners along the superconducting linac are planned for implementation. This investigation centers on refining the Faraday cup design for the PIP-II Laser wire scanners by utilizing GEANT4, a Monte Carlo simulation toolkit. Leveraging this method enables a comprehensive analysis of particle trajectories, energy deposition, secondary electron emission, backscattering, etc., facilitating optimization through adjustments to cup geometries, materials, and placement to maximize its efficiency.
