CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2A)

The Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) product contains one hour of instantaneous Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The SSF combines instantaneous CERES data with scene information from a higher-resolution imager such as Visible/Infrared Scanner (VIRS) on TRMM or Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua. Scene identification and cloud properties are defined at the higher imager resolution and these data are averaged over the larger CERES footprint. For each CERES footprint, the SSF contains the number of cloud layers and for each layer the cloud amount, height, temperature, pressure, optical depth, emissivity, ice and liquid water path, and water particle size. The SSF also contains the CERES filtered radiances for the total, shortwave (SW), and window (WN) channels and the unfiltered SW, longwave (LW), and WN radiances. The SW, LW, and WN radiances at spacecraft altitude are converted to Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) fluxes based on the imager defined scene. These TOA fluxes are used to estimate surface fluxes. Only footprints with adequate imager coverage are included on CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1the SSF which is much less than the full set of footprints on the CERES ES-8 product. The following CERES SSF data sets are currently available: CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition1 CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1 CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2A CER_SSF_TRMM-SIM-VIRS_Edition2_VIRSonly CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2A-TransOps CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2B-TransOps CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2B CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition1A CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition1A CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition2A CER_SSF_Terra-FM2-MODIS_Edition2A CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition2B CER_SSF_Terra-FM2-MODIS_Edition2B CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Beta1 CER_SSF_Aqua-FM3-MODIS_Beta2 CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Beta2. The diurnally-averaged aerosol direct radiative effect and the use of the daytime-mean and insolation-weighted-mean solar zenith angles

Here, this study examines the application of the daytime-mean and insolation-weighted-mean solar zenith angles to calculate the diurnally-averaged aerosol direct radiative effect (DRE), DRE DA , for observed clear-sky conditions at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) and Tropical Western Pacific (TWP) sites. As compared with the reference calculation, the DRE DA are too strong (i.e., more negative) using daytime-mean solar zenith angles (DTMSZA) and are too weak (i.e., less negative) using insolation-weighted-mean solar zenith angles (IWMSZA). The biases in the DRE DA for DTMSZA (IWMSZA) are about -0.8 (0.7) W m -2 at the TOA and about -1.5 (0.9) W m -2 at the surface. Noting the mean TOA DRE DA of -2.85 W m -2 and the surface DRE DA of -7.09 W m -2 at SGP, the relative biases for DTMSZA (IWMSZA) are 26% (-24%) for the TOA DRE DA , and 17% (-11%) for the surface DRE DA . At TWP, the mean TOA DRE DA is -2.81 W m -2 and the surface DRE DA is -11.84 W m -2 which corresponds to relative biases for DTMSZA (IWMSZA) of 29% (-27%) for the TOA DRE DA and 15% (-9%) for the surface DRE DA . By introducing an adjusted insolation-weighted-mean solar zenith angle, the mean biases in the DRE DA at the TOA becomes -0.09 W m -2 and the biases in the DRE DA at the surface are about -0.41 W m -2 . Also presented are the effects of using the mean solar zenith angles on the shortwave (SW) upward fluxes at the TOA and SW downward fluxes at the surface in both clear-sky and pristine-clear-sky (i.e., gases only) conditions.

Contrasting aerosol effects on longwave cloud forcing in South East Asia and Amazon simulated with Community Atmosphere Model version 5.3

Aerosols modify cloud microphysical and radiative properties and thus impact the shortwave (SW) and longwave cloud forcing (LWCF). This study first reports the finding of contrasting aerosol effects on LWCF in South East Asia and Amazon in the Community Atmosphere Model version 5.3 (CAM5.3), which corresponds to the sum of LW indirect and semi-direct effects investigated in Ghan et al., (2012). A series of numerical experiments is conducted to decompose the complex aerosol effects on LWCF. Our analysis indicates that the cooling (negative aerosol effects on LWCF) in Amazon is due mainly to the aerosol effects on warm clouds and the inhibition of vertical motion by the aerosol-induced radiative cooling. In contrast, the warming (positive aerosol effects on LWCF) in South East Asia is due mainly to the aerosol effect on homogeneous freezing, thus reducing the ice particle size and prolonging the existence of ice cloud. Our results emphasize that a comprehensive analysis of integrated aerosol effects on both warm and ice clouds is necessary for better understanding the aerosol effects on LWCF.

Aerosol Direct Radiative Effects at the ARM SGP and TWP Sites: Clear Skies

The clear-sky aerosol direct radiative effect (DRE) was estimated at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) and Tropical Western Pacific (TWP) sites. The NASA Langley Fu-Liou radiation model was used with observed inputs including aerosol vertical extinction profile from the Raman lidar; spectral aerosol optical depth (AOD), single-scattering albedo and asymmetry factor from Aerosol Robotic Network; temperature and water vapor profiles from radiosondes; and surface shortwave (SW) spectral albedo from radiometers. A radiative closure experiment was conducted for clear-sky conditions. The mean differences of modeled and observed surface downwelling SW total fluxes were 1 W m-2 at SGP and 2 W m -2 at TWP, which are within observational uncertainty. At SGP, the estimated annual mean clear-sky aerosol DRE is -3.00 W m -2 at the top of atmosphere (TOA) and -6.85 W m -2 at the surface. The strongest aerosol DRE of -4.81 (-10.77) W m -2 at the TOA (surface) are in the summer when AODs are largest. The weakest aerosol DRE of -.28 (-2.77) W m -2 at the TOA (surface) are in November–January when AODs and single-scattering albedos are lowest. At TWP, the annual mean clear-sky DRE is -2.82 W m-2 at the TOA and -10.34 W m -2 at the surface. The strongest aerosol DRE of -5.95 (-22.20) W m -2 at the TOA (surface) are in November (October) due to the biomass burning season’s peak. The weakest aerosol DRE of -0.96 (-4.16) W m -2 at the TOA (surface) are in March (April) when AODs are smallest.

Evaluation of CloudSat Radiative Kernels Using ARM and CERES Observations and ERA5 Reanalysis

Despite the widespread use of the radiative kernel technique for studying radiative feedbacks and radiative forcings, there has not been any systematic, observation-based validation of the radiative kernel method. Here, we utilize observed and reanalyzed radiative fluxes and atmospheric profiles from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program and ERA5 reanalysis to assess a set of observation-based radiative kernels from CloudSat for six ARM sites. The CloudSat radiative kernels, convoluted with the ERA5 state variables, can almost perfectly reconstruct the monthly anomalies of shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) radiative fluxes in ERA5 at the surface (SFC) and top-of-atmosphere (TOA) with correlations significantly being greater than 0.95. The biases of kernel-estimated flux anomalies calculated using the ARM-observed state variables can be more than twice as large when compared with the ARM-observed surface flux anomalies and Clouds and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) observed anomalies at the TOA. Generally, clouds contribute to most (>60%) of the variance of flux anomalies at Southern Great Plain (SGP), Tropical Western Pacific (TWP), and Eastern North Atlantic (ENA), and surface albedo dominates (>69%) the variance of SW flux anomalies at North Slope of Alaska (NSA). Furthermore, the radiative kernels exhibit the lowest correlation (r ~ [0.55,0.85]) when reconstructing SFC LW flux anomalies at SGP, TWP, and ENA, whose biases are related to the possibility that the kernels may not fully capture the characteristics associated with MJO and ENSO at TWP and the presence of clouds at SGP and ENA.
