Observation of van der Waals phonons in the single-layer cuprate ( Bi , Pb ) 2 ( Sr , La ) 2 CuO 6 + δ

Interlayer van der Waals (vdW) coupling is generic in two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, which can induce very low-energy phonon modes. Using high-resolution inelastic hard x-ray scattering, we uncover the ultralow energy phonon mode along the Cu-O bond direction in the high- T c cuprate (Bi,Pb) 2 (Sr,La) 2 ⁢CuO 6+$\delta$ (Bi2201). The energy and full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of these modes are independent of temperature, while their intensity decreases with doping in accordance with an increasing c -axis lattice parameter. Here, we compare the experimental results to first-principles density functional theory simulations and identify the observed mode as a van der Waals phonon, which arises from the shear motion of the adjacent Bi-O layers. This shows that Bi-based cuprate has vibrational properties similar to graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, which can be exploited to engineer novel heterostructures.

Realization of an Ideal Cairo Tessellation in Nickel Diazenide NiN 2 : High-Pressure Route to Pentagonal 2D Materials

Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials are based on highly symmetric hexagonal structural motifs. In contrast, lower-symmetry structures may have exciting anisotropic properties leading to various applications in nanoelectronics. In this work we report the synthesis of nickel diazenide NiN 2 which possesses atomic-thick layers comprised of Ni 2 N 3 pentagons forming Cairo-type tessellation. The layers of NiN 2 are weakly bonded with the calculated exfoliation energy of 0.72 J/m 2 , which is just slightly larger than that of graphene. The compound crystallizes in the space group of the ideal Cairo tiling (P4/mbm) and possesses significant anisotropy of elastic properties. The single-layer NiN 2 is a direct-band-gap semiconductor, while the bulk material is metallic. Furthermore, this indicates the promise of NiN 2 to be a precursor of a pentagonal 2D material with a tunable direct band gap.

Nanoscale friction of CVD single-layer MoS 2 with controlled defect formation

Two-dimensional (2D) layered nanomaterials such as graphene, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), or tungsten disulfide offer a promising solution in areas of solid-state lubrication, due to their excellent mechanical properties as well as low friction. However, defects can influence their friction and reduce their superior tribological properties. Thus, it is crucial to understand the effects of defects on sliding behavior in 2D nanomaterials, to foster a functional strategy for utilizing 2D nanomaterials as solid-state tribological films. In this study, frictional effects of defects, grain boundaries, and atomic-scale structural defects were explored on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown single layer MoS 2 . Selective patterning of defects into MoS 2 was accomplished via controlled irradiation of helium ions with varying ion doses. The friction of MoS 2 was characterized by friction force microscopy (FFM) and was found that friction depends on the defect formation controlled by helium ion irradiation. This approach offers a correlation between surface topography, defects and friction. Understanding the relative friction of MoS 2 in the presence of different levels of defects is foundational to studying tribological properties of a single layer MoS 2 at both nanoscales and macroscales.
