Sintered Cathodes for All-Solid-State Structural Lithium-Ion Batteries

All-solid-state structural lithium ion batteries serve as both structural load-bearing components and as electrical energy storage devices to achieve system level weight savings in aerospace and other transportation applications. This multifunctional design goal is critical for the realization of next generation hybrid or all-electric propulsion systems. Additionally, transitioning to solid state technology improves upon battery safety from previous volatile architectures. This research established baseline solid state processing conditions and performance benchmarks for intercalation-type layered oxide materials for multifunctional application. Under consideration were lithium cobalt oxide and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide. Pertinent characteristics such as electrical conductivity, strength, chemical stability, and microstructure were characterized for future application in all-solid-state structural battery cathodes. The study includes characterization by XRD, ICP, SEM, ring-on-ring mechanical testing, and electrical impedance spectroscopy to elucidate optimal processing parameters, material characteristics, and multifunctional performance benchmarks. These findings provide initial conditions for implementing existing cathode materials in load bearing applications.

Interpretable ML Approaches for Novel Solid State Electrolyte Design

All-solid-state batteries with Li metal anode can address the safety issues surrounding traditional Li-ion batteries as well as the demand for higher energy densities. However, the development of solid electrolytes simultaneously possessing high ionic conductivity and good chemical and electrochemical stabilities has proven to be a challenge. I will present our informatics approach to explore the Li compound space for promising solid electrolytes using high-throughput multi-property screening and interpretable machine learning. This is accomplished through the generation of a large database of battery-related materials properties of Li compounds. We use tree-based ensemble learning methods and graph neural network approaches to accurately learn relationships between crystal structures and corresponding thermodynamic and kinetic properties, with interpretability being a major focus. Our models give us the ability to enable rapid discovery and design of novel solid-state battery chemistries.

Solid state systems concepts

Two prototype solid state phased array systems concepts for potential use in the Solar Power Satellite are described; the end-mounted and the sandwich systems. In both concepts, the beam is centered on the rectenna by means of phase conjugation of a pilot signal emanating from the ground. In the end-mounted system 36-watt amplifiers are mounted on the ground-plane, whereas in the sandwich the amplifiers are elevated to the dipoles, and their waste heat is dissipated by beryllium oxide discs. The feed lines are underneath the ground-plane, and a coaxial transmission line is carried all the way to the amplifier input. Also discussed is solid state amplifier development.

Fabricating Solid-State Batteries for Electric Aviation

All-solid-state lithium batteries are widely reputed as the next major step in energy storage technology on account their drastically improved safety over wet cells, as solid electrolytes lack the volatile compounds in wet electrolytes that make them combustible. This enhanced safety enables a far wider range of products and vehicles to go fully electric and aligns with future NASA missions that require high performing, reliable, and safe batteries. However, they currently face issues with implementation in consumer products due to the often-poor mechanical properties of the solid electrolyte and relative difficulty to manufacture. Typical solid-state electrolyte challenges were bypassed by incorporating a range of polymeric binders into a solid electrolyte suspension and cast onto a composite carbon-sulfide cathode to create a single bilayer film. The resulting films display superior flexibility and durability compared to solid-electrolyte films typically discussed in literature without compromising the thinness of the films. The bilayer film was then punched into 12.7 cm diameter discs and 4 cm by 5 cm sheets, pressed, and assembled into coin cells and pouch cells respectively.

Improving Cell-Level Specific Energy for All-Solid-State Lithium Sulfur Batteries

All-solid-state lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as one of the top choices toward 500 Wh/kg of specific energy, a key metric for an energy storage system to enable large regional electric aircrafts. Many obstacles remain, such as S utilization in the cathode, cyclability regarding both cathode and anode as well as electrode-electrolyte interfaces, and effective means to increase the S content within the all-solid-state cell architecture. The latter is directly related to cell-level specific energy when considering the weights of all battery cell components. In this presentation, we discuss the efforts in both cathode optimization and cell-level improvement toward increasing the overall specific energy. Various strategies for improving S utilization and reducing the solid electrolyte layer thickness will be presented.

United States Navy - Canadian forces solid state flight data recorder/crash position locator experiment on the B-720 controlled impact demonstration

The operation of a radio beacon position locator during and after the remotely controlled transport aircraft is discussed. The radio beacon transmission was actuated and was picked up by the Navy P-3A chase aircraft for a short time, after which reception was lost. The pilot reported that he received a signal on both 121.5 MHz and 243 MHz for a period of approximately 5 seconds. Five minutes after the crash a portable direction finding unit located on the roof of the NASA Dryden Flight Research Facility, 4 miles distant from the crash, was unable to pick up the beacon transmission. The fire crews started fighting the fires approximately 90 seconds after the time of impact. Navy personnel access to the crash site was allowed on the morning of December 2, 1984. Radio beacon locator was found resting top side up, 15 feet forward and 13 feet perpendicular from the tray location the starboard side of the aircraft. An immediate inspection indicated the airfoil suffered moderate fire damage with paint peeling but not intumescing. The visual marker strobe lamp housings were intact but extensively burned such that it was impossible to see if the lamps had survived. The airfoil suffered minor structural damage, with assorted dents, etc. The extended plunger on the ARU-21 release unit indicated that the pyrotechnic deployment system operated. The radio beacon base (tray) suffered some heat and fire damage, and was charred and blackened by smoke. The frangible switch in the nose survived and the switch in the belly was recovered and found to have actuated. It is assumed that this switch fired the ARU-21 squib. There were no other release switches installed in the normally open system in the aircraft.

Solid-State Cloud Radar System (CRS) Upgrade and Deployment

The recent decade has brought rapid development in solid-state power amplifier (SSPA) technology. This has enabled the use of solid-state precipitation radar in place of high-power and high-voltage systems such as those that use Klystron or Magnetron transmitters. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has recently completed a comprehensive redesign of the 94 gigahertz Cloud Radar System (CRS) to incorporate a solid-state transmitter. It is the first cloud radar to achieve sensitivity comparable to that of a high-voltage transmitter using solid-state. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Cloud Radar System (CRS) is a 94 gigahertz Doppler radar that flies on the NASA ER-2 high-altitude aircraft. The upgraded CRS system utilizes a state-of-the-art solid-state 94 gigahertz power amplifier with a peak transmit power of 30 watts. The modernized CRS system is detailed here with data results from its deployment during the 2014 Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEX).

Design and development of solid state detector for SCADS

Solid state detector technology was applied to the fabrication and testing of cadmium sulfide and silicon narrow slit detector/preamplifier subassemblies. Fabrication of the silicon detector and the cadmium sulfide detectors was accomplished by utilizing cadmium sulfide cells and silicon cells. Fabrication of the preamplifiers for both silicon and cadmium sulfide slit type detectors was also carried out. The design of these preamplifiers was adjusted to ascertain that the limiting noise source of the detector/preamplifier subassembly is the detector and the input cable.

A solid state film transport

A solid state film transport utilizing piezoelectric motion was evaluated and found to have potential in film positioning applications. The concept is particularly useful in flight equipment where torque motors and conventional transport mechanisms are difficult to apply. A demonstration model utilizing 5-inch film was designed, tested, and evaluated. Three basic operating modes were investigated. Design goals for step size were achieved under controlled conditions. The continuous mode test results were marred by an inability to transfer efficiently the piezoceramic motion to the film itself. The design, test results, and problem areas are described.
