Multi-spectral image dissector camera system

The image dissector sensor for the Earth Resources Program is evaluated using contrast and reflectance data. The ground resolution obtainable for low contrast at the targeted signal to noise ratio of 1.8 was defined. It is concluded that the system is capable of achieving the detection of small, low contrast ground targets from satellites.

Structural geology investigation in the republics of Dahomey and Togoland, Africa, using ERTS-1 multi-spectral images

The author has identified the following significant results. Recent geological studies in the Republics of Dahomey and Togoland put in light a new chronology and propose a schema indicating that the structural geology of this region is very complicated. The new observations made possible by the ERTS images concern the main orientations, the folded units, and the lithology. The correlation between different types of laterite and the petrology of the basement seems possible, and is the most significant result of this investigation but unfortunately conducted with poor quality images because of atmospheric haze.

Far-ultraviolet spectral images of comet Halley from sounding rockets

Far-ultraviolet images of comet Halley obtained from sounding rockets launched from White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, on 24 February and 13 March, 1986, are presented. Direct electrographic images of the hydrogen coma of the comet were obtained at the Lyman-alpha wavelength along with objective spectra containing images of the coma at the oxygen, carbon, and sulfur resonance multiplets. Analysis of the Lyman-alpha images yields hydrogen atom production rates of 1.9 x 10 to the 30th/s and 1.4 x 120 to the 30th/s for the two observations. Images of oxygen, carbon, and sulfur emissions obtained with the objective grating spectrograph are presented for the first set of observations and preliminary production rates are derived for these elements.

Rotational modulation and flares on RS Canum Venaticorum and BY Draconis stars. XI - Ultraviolet spectral images of AR Lacertae in September 1985

High-resolution IUE SWP and LWP spectra of the bright eclipsing RS CVn system AR Lac, obtained during 40 h of continuous observations on September 18-19, 1985, are compiled and used to derive chromosphere images. The data and results are presented graphically and discussed in detail. The K 0 IV star is found to have a globally brighter trailing hemisphere and at least three distinct plage regions; the G 2 IV star has a flaring region with significant redshift and line-emission broadening and exhibits factor-of-3 variability in total emission, attributed to the presence of a large chromospherically inactive region.

Surface science capabilities from IMP spectral imaging

The Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) had a single 12-position filter wheel for one of its two 'eyes'. Originally eight, and then nine, of these filters were optimized for surface science, and three narrow-band filters for atmospheric science. Because of some design revisions we will now have filter wheels on both sides. The wheels for right and left eyes are identical, 12 filter positions each, and rigidly linked to the same rotation shaft. There are now 13 surface filters, in addition to 5 for atmospheric observations. Details of all the filter positions are tabulated and approximate gaussian bandpasses for the 13 surface filters are shown.

Spectral imaging of the Orion Bar at 6.2 and 7.8 microns

We have obtained images of the Orion Bar region through narrow-band filters at 6.2 and 7.8 mu m to determine whether the emission observed at these wavelengths arises from C-C modes in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's). Morphologically, the distribution of the emissions are similar, but appear different in detail. Quantitative comparisons of these band intensities with previous data at 8.4 and 11.3 mu m indicates that they are indeed consistent with emission from fluorescently excited PAH molecules.

Spectral imaging applications: Remote sensing, environmental monitoring, medicine, military operations, factory automation and manufacturing

This paper reviews the activities at OKSI related to imaging spectroscopy presenting current and future applications of the technology. The authors discuss the development of several systems including hardware, signal processing, data classification algorithms and benchmarking techniques to determine algorithm performance. Signal processing for each application is tailored by incorporating the phenomenology appropriate to the process, into the algorithms. Pixel signatures are classified using techniques such as principal component analyses, generalized eigenvalue analysis and novel very fast neural network methods. The major hyperspectral imaging systems developed at OKSI include the Intelligent Missile Seeker (IMS) demonstration project for real-time target/decoy discrimination, and the Thermal InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer (TIRIS) for detection and tracking of toxic plumes and gases. In addition, systems for applications in medical photodiagnosis, manufacturing technology, and for crop monitoring are also under development.

Performance and Results from a Space Borne, Uncooled Microbolometer Array Spectral Radiometric Imager

The Infrared Spectral Imaging Radiometer experiment was flown on a space shuttle mission as a shuttle hitchhiker experiment in August of 1997. The goals of the experiment were to test uncooled array detectors for infrared spectral imaging from space and to apply for the first time retrieval from space of brightness temperatures of cloud, land and sea along with direct laser measurements of cloud top height. The instrument operates in 3 narrow and one broad spectral band, all between 7 and 13 microns in either stare or time-delay and integration mode. The nominal spatial resolution was 1/4 kilometer. Using onboard calibrations along with periodic views of deep space, radiometric calibration of imagery was carried out and performance analyzed. The noise equivalent temperature difference and absolute accuracy reported here varied with operating mode, spectral band and scene temperature but were within requirements. This paper provides a description of the instrument, its operating modes, the method of brightness temperature retrieval, the method of spectral registration and results from the flight.

Modified Recursive Hierarchical Segmentation of Data

An algorithm and a computer program that implements the algorithm that performs recursive hierarchical segmentation (RHSEG) of data have been developed. While the current implementation is for two-dimensional data having spatial characteristics (e.g., image, spectral, or spectral-image data), the generalized algorithm also applies to three-dimensional or higher dimensional data and also to data with no spatial characteristics. The algorithm and software are modified versions of a prior RHSEG algorithm and software, the outputs of which often contain processing-window artifacts including, for example, spurious segmentation-image regions along the boundaries of processing-window edges.

T2SL meta-surfaced digital focal plane arrays for earth remote sensing applications

Long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) focal plane arrays (FPAs) needed for Earth Science imaging, spectral imaging, and sounding applications have always been among the most challenging in infrared photodetector technology due to the rigorous material growth, device design and fabrication demands. Future small satellite missions will present even more challenges for LWIR FPAs, as operating temperature must be increased so that cooler (and radiator) volume, mass, and power can be reduced.
