Spin waves excitation at micron-sized, anisotropy modified regions in amorphous Fe 80 B 20 stripes: Local properties and inter-regions coupling

We report on the measurement of the local magnetization dynamics occurring, at units of GHz, in large aspect ratio stripes lithographed from reduced damping amorphous Fe 80 B 20 films. The stripes were submitted to local anisotropy modifications by micrometric beam synchrotron X-ray irradiation. Our results include data on the dispersion relationships and group velocities corresponding to spin waves excited at both the non-irradiated and the irradiated regions. Whereas in the former case we observed standing spin waves with transverse-to-the stripe axis wave vector, in the latter one, for which the wave vector of the spin waves was parallel-to-the stripe axis, propagating spin waves were excited. In both regions, we measured the effective propagation distance of the spin waves, which resulted to be independent of the wave vector orientation. In the spin waves excited at the irradiated region, we also measured the decay time and effective damping coefficient, which was in good agreement with previously reported values obtained from FMR measurements in amorphous Fe 80 B 20 continuous films. We show that the interaction of the non-irradiated and irradiated zones results, at the stripe transverse saturation remanence and under an exciting field frequency of 4 GHz, in the introduction of a π phase shift between the standing spin waves excited at both sides of the irradiated region. This result opens the possibility of using the local, transverse to the stripe axis, magnetic anisotropy easy axis induced by the X-ray irradiation as a crucial constituent of a zero-applied field spin wave phase-shifter.

Discretized evolution of solitons in the achiral stripe phase of a Fe/Gd thin film

Understanding magnetic phase transitions from stripe to skyrmion textures provide fundamental scientific insights into the details of the intermediate topologies through which the system evolves. The solitonic nature of spin texture in both stripe and skyrmion phases has been observed in materials with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In this study we show that the field evolution in a dipolar interaction mediated Fe/Gd multilayer that exhibits achiral stripe textures behaves similar to a finite-sized chiral soliton lattice. As a function of magnetic field, the stripes exhibit discrete jumps in periodicity indicative of intermediate topologies as the stripes get wound into skyrmions.

Gapped commensurate antiferromagnetic response in a strongly underdoped model cuprate superconductor

It is a distinct possibility that spin fluctuations are the pairing interactions in numerous unconventional superconductors. In the high-transition-temperature (high-T c ) cuprates, superconductivity emerges upon doping antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, and spin fluctuations might furthermore drive unusual pseudogap phenomena. Here we use magnetic neutron scattering to study the highly underdoped cuprate HgBa 2 CuO 4+δ (hole concentration p ≈ 0.064). In contrast to prior results for other underdoped cuprates, we find no evidence of incommensurate magnetic order associated with spin-density-wave or stripe correlations. Instead, the antiferromagnetic response in both the superconducting and pseudogap states is gapped below Δ AF ≈ 6 meV, commensurate over a wide energy range, and disperses above about 55 meV. Given the pristine nature of HgBa 2 CuO 4+δ , which exhibits high structural symmetry and minimal point disorder effects, this behavior likely signifies the unmasked response of the underlying CuO 2 planes near the Mott-insulating state. These results serve as a benchmark for a refined theoretical understanding of the cuprates.

Thermodynamic stability of a spin microemulsion in Rashba spin-orbit-coupled bosons

Recent finite-temperature numerical simulations have unveiled a quantum “spin” microemulsion analog, found by raising the temperature of a stripe supersolid phase in a Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose gas. This microemulsion state is a highly correlated, isotropic normal fluid where atoms self-arrange based on their internal pseudospin into patterns that resemble bicontinuous microemulsions. This finding leaves several open questions regarding the broader accessibility of this phase in experiments. Here, we use equilibrium finite-temperature numerical simulations based on a coherent-state path integral representation to perform a computational investigation into the thermodynamic stability of the spin microemulsion state. Numerical simulations emphasize the requirement of a nearly, but not perfectly, isotropic spin-orbit coupling in order to achieve the microemulsion phase in cold-atom experiments. Moreover, the microemulsion state exists independent of miscibility of the pseudospin components and for a wide range of pseudospin population imbalance, suggesting a high degree of flexibility in choosing the atom and hyperfine states in an experimental realization. Lastly, we demonstrate this feasibility by mimicking a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled 87 Rb experiment in an isotropic harmonic trap, where we confirm the microemulsion's existence via its density profile and equilibrium quasimomentum distribution.

Non-standing spin-waves in confined micrometer-sized ferromagnetic structures under uniform excitation

A non-standing characteristic of directly imaged spin-waves in confined micrometer-sized ultrathin Permalloy (Ni 80 Fe 20 ) structures is reported along with evidence of the possibility to alter the observed state by modifications to the sample geometry. Using micromagnetic simulations, the presence of the spin-wave modes excited in the Permalloy stripes along with the quasi-uniform modes was observed. The predicted spin-waves were imaged in direct space using time resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, combined with a ferromagnetic resonance excitation scheme (STXM-FMR). STXM-FMR measurements revealed a non-standing characteristic of the spin-waves. Also, it was shown by micromagnetic simulations and confirmed using STXM-FMR results that the observed characteristic of the spin-waves can be influenced by the local magnetic fields in different sample geometries.

Magnetic field induced phase transitions of the triangular spin model

In this work, motivated by a recent inelastic neutron scattering experiment on YbMgGaO 4 , I study the homogeneous spin model on the triangular lattice using the cluster mean-field theory and exact diagonalization. Phase diagrams with and without magnetic field are computed. The results show that the magnetic field can induce the phase transition from the spin liquid state (or the stripe state) to the 120 ° antiferromagnetic state. These phase transitions are suppressed by the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction J 2 / J 1 and vanish as J 2 / J 1 > 0.11 . I analyze a parameter space at J 2 / J 1 = 0.1 , where a field induced phase transition can occur, and find that the deviation of the theoretical spin excitation energy from the experimental data is only about 0.054. These results imply that an effective homogeneous spin model still applies to YbMgGaO 4 .

Large response of charge stripes to uniaxial stress in La 1.475 Nd 0.4 Sr 0.125 CuO 4

The La-based "214"cuprates host several symmetry-breaking phases, including superconductivity, charge and spin order in the form of stripes, and a structural orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition. Therefore these materials are an ideal system to study the effects of uniaxial stress onto the various correlations that pervade the cuprate phase diagram. We report resonant x-ray scattering experiments on La 1.475 Nd 0.4 Sr 0.125 CuO 4 (LNSCO-125) that reveal a significant response of charge stripes to uniaxial tensile stress of ~0.1GPa. These effects include a reduction of the onset temperature of stripes by ~50K, a 29-K reduction of the low-temperature orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transition, competition between charge order and superconductivity, and a preference for stripes to form along the direction of applied stress. Altogether, we observe a dramatic response of the electronic properties of LNSCO-125 to a modest amount of uniaxial stress.

Unveiling the Emergent Traits of Chiral Spin Textures in Magnetic Multilayers

Abstract Magnetic skyrmions are topologically wound nanoscale textures of spins whose ambient stability and electrical manipulation in multilayer films have led to an explosion of research activities. While past efforts focused predominantly on isolated skyrmions, recently ensembles of chiral spin textures, consisting of skyrmions and magnetic stripes, are shown to possess rich interactions with potential for device applications. However, several fundamental aspects of chiral spin texture phenomenology remain to be elucidated, including their domain wall (DW) structure, thermodynamic stability, and morphological transitions. Here the evolution of these textural characteristics are unveiled on a tunable multilayer platform—wherein chiral interactions governing spin texture energetics can be widely varied—using a combination of full‐field electron and soft X‐ray microscopies with numerical simulations. With increasing chiral interactions, the emergence of Néel helicity, followed by a marked reduction in domain compressibility, and finally a transformation in the skyrmion formation mechanism are demonstrated. Together with an analytical model, these experiments establish a comprehensive microscopic framework for investigating and tailoring chiral spin texture character in multilayer films.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_\chi$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Furthermore, our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Intertwined spin, charge, and pair correlations in the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the thermodynamic limit

Significance The high-temperature superconducting cuprates are governed by intertwined striped magnetic and charge orders, in addition to superconductivity. Remarkably similar behavior has also been seen in numerical calculations for the Hubbard model describing the copper–oxygen layers in these materials. Finite-cluster methods typically find that spin- and charge-stripe order dominates, while embedded quantum-cluster methods, which access the thermodynamic limit, often conclude that superconductivity does. Here, we report the observation of fluctuating spin and charge stripes in an embedded cluster calculation for the Hubbard model. This discovery demonstrates that striped states survive in the thermodynamic limit and allows us to study their influence on the model’s superconducting properties, where we find evidence for pair-density-wave correlations intertwined with the stripe correlations.

π phase shift across stripes in a charge density wave system

Many strongly correlated materials are characterized by deeply intertwined charge and spin order. Besides their high superconducting transition temperatures, one of the central features of these complex patterns in cuprates is a phase shift which occurs across lines of decreased hole density. That is, when doped away from their antiferromagnetic phase, the additional charge is not distributed uniformly, but rather in “stripes.” The sublattices preferentially occupied by up and down spin are reversed across these stripes, a phenomenon referred to as a “π phase shift.” Many of the spin-charge patterns, including the π phase shift, are reproduced by density matrix renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo calculations of simplified tight binding (repulsive Hubbard) models. In this paper we demonstrate that this sublattice reversal is generic by considering the corresponding phenomenon in the attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian, where a charge density wave phase forms at half filling. Here, we introduce charge stripes via an appropriate local chemical potential; measurements of charge correlation across the resulting lines of lowered density reveal a clear π phase.

Quantitative investigation of the short-range magnetic correlations in the candidate quantum spin liquid NaYbO 2

Here, we present a neutron diffraction study of NaYbO 2 , a candidate quantum spin-liquid (QSL) compound hosting a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice of magnetic Yb 3+ ions. We observe diffuse magnetic scattering that persists to at least 20 K, demonstrating the presence of short-range magnetic correlations in this system up to a relatively high-energy scale. Using a reverse Monte Carlo and magnetic pair distribution function analysis, we confirm the predominant antiferromagnetic nature of these correlations and show that the diffuse scattering data can be well described by noninteracting layers of Heisenberg or XY spins on the triangular lattice. We rule out Ising spins and short-range-ordered stripe or 120° phases as candidate ground states of NaYbO 2 . These results are consistent with a possible QSL ground state in NaYbO 2 and showcase the benefit of a combined reciprocal- and real-space analysis of materials with short-range magnetic correlations.

Cuprate superconductors as viewed through a striped lens

Understanding the electron pairing in hole-doped cuprate superconductors has been a challenge, in particular because the “normal” state from which it evolves is unprecedented. Now, after three and a half decades of research, involving a wide range of experimental characterizations, it is possible to delineate a clear and consistent cuprate story. It starts with doping holes into a charge-transfer insulator, resulting in in-gap states. Furthermore, these states exhibit a pseudogap resulting from the competition between antiferromagnetic superexchange J between nearest-neighbor Cu atoms (a real-space interaction) and the kinetic energy of the doped holes, which, in the absence of interactions, would lead to extended Bloch-wave states whose occupancy is characterized in reciprocal space. To develop some degree of coherence on cooling, the spin and charge correlations must self-organize in a cooperative fashion.

Field-Dependent Magnetic Domain Behavior in van der Waals Fe 3 GeTe 2

Two-dimensional magnetic van der Waals (vdW) materials can show a variety of topological nontrivial spin textures, such as Bloch- or Néel-type stripe, skyrmion, or bubble domains under certain external stimuli. It is critical to understand the magnetic domain behavior in vdW materials in order to control their size and density in response to external stimuli, such as electric and magnetic fields. In this study, we examine the magnetic field dependence of topologically non-trivial magnetization spin textures in vdW Fe 3 GeTe 2 . Néel-type stripe domains and skyrmions are formed depending on the magnetic field-cooling protocol used during in situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) experiments. Use of quantitative reconstruction of magnetic induction maps and micromagnetic simulations allow for the understanding of the LTEM results of Néel-type stripe domains as well as skyrmions. In addition, the deformation of skyrmion contrast is observed as a result of the introduction of an in-plane magnetic field. We demonstrate the stability of the stripe domains and skyrmions in response to an externally applied magnetic field due to an energy barrier for domain wall annihilation. Our results establish an understanding of the energy landscape that governs the behavior of the topologically non-trivial spin textures in vdW materials which can be harnessed for spintronic applications.

Quasi-One-Dimensional Spin Excitations in the Iron Pnictide NaFe 0.53 ⁢Cu 0.47 ⁢As

Spectroscopic measurements in model 1D correlated systems offer insights for understanding their two-dimensional counterparts, which include the cuprate and iron pnictide/chalcogenide superconductors. A major challenge is the identification of such correlated systems with dominantly 1D physics. Here, in this Letter, inelastic neutron scattering measurements on NaFe 0.53⁢ Cu 0.47 ⁢As single crystal directly reveal quasi-1D spin excitations, resulting from atomic order that leads to magnetic Fe and nonmagnetic Cu chains. The dominant exchange interaction is antiferromagnetic along the chain [𝑆⁢𝐽 ∥ ≈ 90.1⁢(3) meV], whereas the inter-chain couplings are much weaker [𝑆⁢𝐽 ⊥ ≈ −2.4⁢(1) meV and 𝑆⁢𝐽 c ≈ 0.15⁢(5) meV]. The quasi-1D spin excitations in NaFe 0.53 ⁢Cu 0.47⁢ As stem from both the Néel and stripe vectors, with Néel excitations sensitive to Fe impurities on the Cu site. The spin excitations in quasi-1D NaFe 0.53 ⁢Cu 0.47⁢ As and quasi-2D FeSe exhibit a striking resemblance, suggesting a common origin for their coexistent stripe and Néel excitations. Our findings demonstrate magnetic dilution in NaFeAs leads to dimension reduction of its magnetic degree of freedom, presenting a strategy for discovering low-dimensional quantum materials.

Emergence of antiferromagnetic correlations and Kondolike features in a model for infinite layer nickelates

We report a determinant quantum Monte Carlo study of a two-band model, inspired by infinite-layer nickelates, focusing on the influence of interlayer hybridization between $3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ orbitals derived from Ni (or Ni and O) in one layer and rare-earth (R) 5d orbitals in the other layer, hereafter the Ni and R layers, respectively. For a filling with one electron shared between the two layers on average, interlayer hybridization leads to “self-doped" holes in the Ni layer and the absence of antiferromagnetic ordering, but rather the appearance of spin-density and charge-density stripe-like states. As the interlayer hybridization increases, both the Ni and R layers develop antiferromagnetic correlations, even though either layer individually remains away from half-filling. For hybridization within an intermediate range, roughly comparable to the intralayer nearest-neighbor hopping t Ni , the model develops signatures of Kondo-like physics.

Magnetic field induced partially polarized chiral spin liquid in a transition metal dichalcogenide moiré system

As one of the most intriguing states of matter, the chiral spin liquid (CSL) has attracted much scientific interest while its existence and mechanism in crystalline strongly correlated systems remain hotly debated. On the other hand, strong correlation driven emergent phenomena can be realized in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers with a tremendously tunable large length scale providing a new platform for the emergence of CSLs. Here, we focus on a strongly correlated model relevant to heterobilayer WSe 2 /MoSe 2 and investigate the Mott insulating phase at half filling under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Considering both its orbital and spin Zeeman effects we identify three conventionally ordered phases including a 120° Néel phase, a stripe phase, and an up-up-down phase. For intermediate fields an emergent quantum spin liquid phase is identified with partial spin polarization. We further characterize its topological nature as the v = 1/2 Laughlin CSL through the topological entanglement spectrum and quantized spin pumping under spin flux insertion. In addition, we map out the quantum phase diagram for different twisted angles in an experimentally accessible parameter regime.
