Sulfonated Aromatic Polypentenamers: Scope of the Acetyl Sulfate Reaction

A precision polymer featuring one phenyl pendant at every fifth carbon on a polyethylene backbone was modified to varying degrees of sulfonation (DS = 33–98%) using acetyl sulfate with standard conditions by varying reaction times (up to 48 h). This soft, homogeneous method allows for evenly distributed phenylsulfonic acid groups with minimal side reactions and results in light brown, transparent materials with glass transition temperatures of 33–78 °C that increase with DS and parent polymer molar mass. The DS was accurately determined through well-resolved 1 H NMR (DSHNMR) signals of the regularly spaced phenyl groups and corroborated by inverse-gated decoupling 13 C NMR analysis. These analyses were compared to a series of other commonly accepted methods for DS determination including titration and elemental analysis (EA). The DS by titration (DS titr ) also increased with reaction time but was consistently lower than those determined by NMR. Significant discrepancies between theoretical and measured sulfur mass were observed for several samples through EA. Qualitative methods, such as infrared spectroscopy and thermal analyses, were also performed and correlated well with the DS determined by NMR. Here, this study presents a promising method to achieve a complete scope of homogeneous sulfonation from mild reaction conditions and presents a case to determine DS through multiple methods, with spectroscopic analyses, such as NMR, being potentially the most valuable.

Nickel–Sulfonate Mode of Substrate Binding for Forward and Reverse Reactions of Methyl-SCoM Reductase Suggest a Radical Mechanism Involving Long-Range Electron Transfer

Methyl-coenzyme M reductase (MCR) catalyzes both the synthesis and the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Its catalytic site contains Ni at the core of cofactor F 430 . The Ni ion, in its low-valent Ni(I) state, lights the fuse leading to homolysis of the C–S bond of methyl-coenzyme M (methyl-SCoM) to generate a methyl radical, which abstracts a hydrogen atom from coenzyme B (HSCoB) to generate methane and the mixed disulfide CoMSSCoB. Direct reversal of this reaction activates methane to initiate anaerobic methane oxidation. On the basis of the crystal structures, which reveal a Ni–thiol interaction between Ni(II)–MCR and inhibitor CoMSH, a Ni(I)–thioether complex with substrate methyl-SCoM has been transposed to canonical MCR mechanisms. Similarly, a Ni(I)–disulfide with CoMSSCoB is proposed for the reverse reaction. However, this Ni(I)–sulfur interaction poses a conundrum for the proposed hydrogen-atom abstraction reaction because the >6 Å distance between the thiol group of SCoB and the thiol of SCoM observed in the structures appears to be too long for such a reaction. The spectroscopic, kinetic, structural, and computational studies described here establish that both methyl-SCoM and CoMSSCoB bind to the active Ni(I) state of MCR through their sulfonate groups, forming a hexacoordinate Ni(I)–N/O complex, not Ni(I)–S. These studies rule out direct Ni(I)–sulfur interactions in both substrate-bound states. As a solution to the mechanistic conundrum, we propose that both the forward and the reverse MCR reactions emanate through long-range electron transfer from the Ni(I)–sulfonate complexes with methyl-SCoM and CoMSSCoB, respectively.

Sulfur and Hydrogen Isotope Anomalies in Meteorite Sulfonic Acids

Intramolecular carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur isotope ratios were measured on a homologous series of organic sulfonic acids discovered in the Murchison meteorite. Mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionations were observed along with high deuterium/hydrogen ratios. The deuterium enrichments indicate formation of the hydrocarbon portion of these compounds in a low-temperature environment that is consistent with that of interstellar clouds. Sulfur-33 enrichments observed in methanesulfonic acid could have resulted from gas-phase ultraviolet irradiation of a precursor, carbon disulfide. The source of the sulfonic acid precursors may have been the reactive interstellar molecule carbon monosulfide.

An Active–Site Sulfonate Group Creates a Fast Water Oxidation Electrocatalyst That Exhibits High Activity in Acid

The storage of solar energy in chemical bonds will depend on pH–universal catalysts that are not only impervious to acid, but actually thrive in it. Whereas other homogeneous water oxidation catalysts are less active in acid, we report a catalyst that maintained high electrocatalytic turnover frequency at pH values as low as 1.1 and 0.43 (k cat = 1501±608 s –1 and 831±254 s –1 , respectively). Moreover, current densities, related to catalytic reaction rates, ranged from 15 to 50 mA cm –2 mM –1 comparable to those reported for state–of–the–art heterogeneous catalysts and 30 to 100 times greater than those measured for two prominent literature homogeneous catalysts at pH 1.1 and 0.43. The catalyst also exhibited excellent durability when a chemical oxidant was used (Ce IV , 7400 turnovers, TOF 0.88 s –1 ). Here, preliminary computational studies suggest that the unusual active–site sulfonate group acts a proton relay even in strong acid, as intended.

Characterizing Reaction Space in the Continuous-Flow Esterification of Oleic Acid Using a Sulfonated Hydrothermal Carbon Catalyst

Continuous-flow catalytic esterification of free fatty acids (FFA) with methanol in the presence of sulfonated hydrothermal carbon (SHTC) as catalyst was studied. Using a Box-Behnken experimental design protocol, the effects of residence time, methanol:acid molar ratio, and water concentration on the conversion of oleic acid into methyl oleate were investigated. The optimum conditions for achieving esterification greater than 90 % at 100 °C were determined to be 11-minute residence time, a MeOH:FFA molar ratio >14.6 and up to 14.9 % water. The SHTC was used continuously for 4.5 days without a significant decrease in catalytic performance. The results confirmed that SHTC is an effective solid acid catalyst in a continuous flow system for the esterification of FFA.

Effect of tension during sulfonation stabilization for UHMWPE-derived carbon fibers

Polyethylene is a promising low-cost alternative precursor material for carbon fiber production, but it has yet to show mechanical properties near or surpassing polyacrylonitrile-derived carbon fibers. The high molecular weight and order of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) may offer a pathway to realizing this promise by enabling long-range graphitic structure formation and superior mechanical properties. The tension applied during the precursor stabilization process is crucial to maintaining the shape of the fibers during the conversion process, but no published study has yet probed the relationship between sulfonation tension and carbon fiber microstructure and mechanical properties. In this work, a logarithmic sweep of tensile stress was applied to UHMWPE fibers during the stabilization process followed by carbonization. Increasing tension significantly reduced fiber shrinkage, resulted in straighter fibers with less severe kink bands, and greatly improved the mechanical properties of the fibers. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction revealed that in all cases the carbon fibers were largely amorphous, but increasing tension resulted in increased size and alignment of the turbostratic crystallites with the fiber axis. Large voids were present in the sample fibers, so the Griffith-Irwin relation was employed to predict the potential ultimate tensile strength of the fibers with voids reduced to sizes comparable to commercially produced fibers. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the importance of tension applied during the stabilization of polyethylene fibers for carbon fiber production and establishes a framework for achieving high mechanical properties from these precursors.

Sulfone-based electrolytes for high energy density lithium-ion batteries

Here, in this work, localized high concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) based on tetramethylene sulfone (TMS) were designed. Similar to LHCEs based on other solvents, TMS-based LHCEs can achieve excellent compatibility with high energy density lithium ion batteries (LIBs) when combined with a proper additive. By comparing LHCEs based on different solvents and additives, it was revealed that the unique solvation structure of LHCEs facilitates the synergetic decomposition of anion, solvent and additive in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation. Proper combinations of the three constituents of the solvation sheaths in LHCEs can promote the formation of highly effective SEI on graphite negative electrode. The absence of LiPF 6 in LHCEs also suppresses the degradation of positive electrode materials in LIBs. The superior interphasial properties of LHCEs is the key to realizing the long lifespan of high energy density LIBs.

Water and salt transport properties of pentiptycene-containing sulfonated polysulfones for desalination membrane applications

A series of pentiptycene-containing disulfonated polysulfone copolymers (PENT-BP) were synthesized via condensation polymerization. Water and salt transport properties (solubility, diffusivity and permeability) were characterized for acid-form membranes (PENT-BP(H)) and compared with triptycene-based sulfonated polysulfones (TRP-BP(H)) and a non-iptycene-containing 4,4'-biphenol-based series (BPS(H)) of polysulfones to investigate the effect of pentiptycene on membrane performance. At comparable water content, the PENT-BP(H) exhibited increased water and salt permeability due to the additional free volume introduced by the pentiptycene units. Enhanced water/salt permeability selectivity of PENT-BP(H) series was also observed due to a significantly higher diffusivity selectivity. At comparable water permeance (P w D ~ 8 X 10 -6 cm 2 /s), the salt rejection of PENT-BP (H) copolymers obtained from dead-end filtration reached 91–93% at 400 psi, higher than that of a corresponding BPS(H) series. This study suggests that incorporation of iptycene moieties into polymer backbone is an effective strategy to enhance desalination membrane performance.

Synthesis and thermomechanical characteristics of zwitterionic poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers

Charge-containing polymeric materials have been widely studied for a range of applications. The fundamental relationships between the charge species, charge density, and the microscale morphology of charge-containing polymers are critical for defining the application in which they may be used. In this work, a series of thermoplastic poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) copolymers with controllable sulfobetaine charge contents (0~100 mol%) and high molecular weights (Mw ~ 65 kDa) were prepared. All the zwitterionic PAESs synthesized showed thermal stability up to 250 °C. DSC and tensile tests showed a decreased T g and mechanical strength with the incorporation of increasing charge density, which suggests a plasticization effect by the charged group. Electron microscopy and X-ray scattering data confirmed the absence of microphase separation in the ion-containing random copolymer system, which corroborated with the observation of a single T g for all zwitterionic copolymers studied. Furthermore, the relative hydrophilicity of the samples was evaluated by water uptake measurements, which revealed that the water uptake of the zwitterionic PAESs can reach up to 64% for the 72 mol% zwitterion copolymer while the free-standing film in the wet state still maintains a Young's modulus of 185 MPa. Here, the thermoplastic charge-containing copolymers in this work demonstrated potential for applications such as coatings or water purification membranes, in which balancing hydrophilicity, processibility, and thermomechanical performance are important.

Sulfonated Diels–Alder Poly(Phenylene)s in Membrane Electrode Assemblies for Fuel Cells

The transition to environmentally sustainable materials in fuel cells requires alternatives to persistent polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) like Nafion. This study investigates the performance-limiting factors of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) utilizing sulfonated Diels–Alder poly(phenylene)s (sDAPPs) as PFAS-free polymer electrolytes. Among the configurations evaluated, the greatest performance loss occurred when sDAPP is used as the cathode binder, primarily due to phenyl group adsorption on catalyst surfaces, which reduces oxygen reduction reaction activity and impedes oxygen transport. Additional performance degradation arises from membrane-electrode interfacial incompatibility and insufficient ionomer hydrophobicity. By addressing ionomer adsorption and improving interfacial contact, an sDAPP-based cathode achieved a current density of 1.57 A cm −2 at 0.6 V under fully humidified H 2 /air conditions at 80 °C and 150 kPa abs . These results offer key insights for advancing high-performance, PFAS-free fuel cell technologies.

Application of Poly(ether sulfone)‐Based Membranes in Clean Energy Technology

Abstract Poly(ether sulfone) (PES) is a kind of polymer materials with excellent electrical insulation and acid/alkali stability. PES can be operated at high temperature continuously for a long time and still maintain excellent property stability in the environments with rapidly changed temperature, namely, great thermostability. Moreover, PES has low molding shrinkage, good dimensional stability and excellent film‐forming characteristics. Compared with inorganic membranes, PES‐based membranes have lower cost, which have received more attention and wide recognition in the field of clean energy technologies in recent years, such as flow batteries, fuel cells, water treatment, and gas separation. Therefore, this review summarizes the research status and prospect of the utilization of PES‐based membranes in clean energy fields, in order to further promote their development and application.

Crystal Structures of Diaryl Hydrazone and Sulfone Stabilizers in Complex with an Amyloidogenic Light Chain Reveal an Alternate Ligand‐Binding Cavity

Abstract Stabilization of amyloidogenic immunoglobulin light chains (LCs) by binding of small molecule “kinetic stabilizers” is under development as a novel treatment for light chain amyloidosis. From a high‐throughput screen, we previously identified 16 full‐length (FL) LC stabilizers from five distinct chemotypes. We then obtained structural biological information on two classes of hits, coumarins and hydantoins, revealing that both chemotypes bind to a pocket at the V L −V L interface of the FL LC dimer. Here, we report crystal structures of three screening hits from two other chemotypes, diaryl hydrazones and sulfones, in complex with an amyloidogenic FL LC. While two of these hits bind to the previously identified pocket, one diaryl hydrazone binds to a different pocket bisected by the C 2 symmetry axis of the dimer. These data further expand on the FL LC stabilizer‐binding surface that could be used in design of more potent FL LC aggregation inhibitors.

Durable and Highly Selective Ion Transport of a Sulfonated Diels Alder Poly(phenylene) for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

In order to improve the durability and ion selectivity of a hydrocarbon membrane for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) a polymer was rationally designed with an external hydrophobic shell and internal hydrophilic core. The polymer was designed to prevent hydrophilic polymer chain aggregation by functionalizing the external polymer shell with hydrophobic side chains and attaching acid moieties onto the polymer backbone. The hydrophobic shell is the result of pentafluorobenzoyl group functionalization on the pendent aryl rings in a Diels Alder poly(phenylene) backbone. The internal polymer chain contains sulfonic acid moieties to impart hydrophilic character. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of the membrane were systematically studied and compared with widely used Nafion-212. The synthesized membranes were found to be superior to Nafion-212 not only in terms of lower vanadium ion permeability (4.25 x 10 -8 vs. Nafion-212: 6.0 x 10 -6 cm 2 min -1 ) but also in higher VRFB performance (EE = 89% and vs. Nafion-212: 85.5% at 40 mA/cm 2 ). The membrane also showed over three times higher capacity retention than Nafion-212 (0.075 % vs. 0.25 % capacity loss per cycle respectively) and excellent ex situ and in situ chemical stability.

Co-ion specific effect on sodium halides sorption and transport in a cross-linked poly(p-styrene sulfonate-co-divinylbenzene) for membrane applications

Here, sodium halide sorption and transport in a cation exchange membrane based on cross-linked poly(p-styrene sulfonate-co-divinylbenzene) (CR61) were investigated experimentally and theoretically. At fixed co-ion valence, sodium halide partitioning between aqueous electrolyte solutions and ion exchange polymers is only minimally sensitive to co-ion chemical identity. NaCl, NaF and NaI exhibit similar solubility coefficients in CR61, which agrees reasonably well with predictions of the Donnan-Manning model, especially at high external salt concentrations. Ion activity coefficients in the membrane were evaluated and ion sorption thermodynamics were investigated. Ion diffusion coefficients in CR61 were predicted using a recently developed framework based on the Manning diffusion model, which accounts for electrostatic effects on ion diffusion, and the Mackie-Meares model, which accounts for tortuosity/area effects on ion diffusion in swollen polymers. Model predictions agree reasonably well with the experimental data, especially at high external salt concentrations. The observed decrease in salt diffusion coefficients in CR61 relative to values in aqueous solutions is due primarily to tortuosity/area effects. Salt diffusion coefficients correlate with co-ion hydrated radius and membrane water content. Finally, salt permeability coefficients predicted using the solution-diffusion model exhibit good agreement with experimental data, especially at external salt concentration greater than 0.1 mol/L.

Polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) stabilized polyethylenimine (PEI) membranes fabricated by spray coating for highly effective CO 2 /N 2 separation

Greenhouse effect, largely caused by CO 2 emission, has become a major concern for global climate change. Post-combustion CO 2 capture is one of the critical strategies to mitigate this issue. Membrane technology for carbon capture has drawn significant attention because of the cost and energy efficiency and scalability. Many membranes for CO 2 capture are limited by the trade-off between CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity and the long-term stability under practical operating conditions. Facilitated transport membranes with efficient CO 2 carriers have demonstrated potential to surpass the permeability-selectivity trade-off, but these carriers are often lost under operational conditions. In this work, we designed and fabricated a polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) stabilized polyethylenimine (PEI) membrane by a facile and scalable spray-coating method. The deposited defect-free selective layer, in which the amine carriers in PEI can be stabilized electrostatically by PSS, exhibited superior CO 2 separation performance with good long-term stability under practical operating conditions. The separation performance was optimized by spray-coating cycles, CNT network loading, and PSS loading. Our membrane showed CO 2 permeance ranging from 820 to 1,770 GPU and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity varying from 395 to 460 under vacuum operation mode in the temperature range between 80 and 90 °C. Furthermore, the membrane was successfully scaled up to 200 cm 2 with good uniformity. These results might suggest a novel membrane structure and a scalable approach for fabrication of highly efficient CO 2 separation membranes.

Sulfonated polybenzimidazole membrane with graphene oxide additive for 2,3-butanediol/water separation: A molecular simulation

Membrane separation for 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) recovery from fermentation broth is highly valued for sustainable and renewable processes, but it requires efficient membrane materials. Here, this work evaluates the sulfonated polybenzimidazole (sPBI) and its graphene oxide (GO) doped composite membrane for separating 2,3-BDO and water via atomistic simulations. Density functional theory calculations are applied to identify various forms of sPBI structures and quantify their binding interactions with 2,3-BDO and water. Classical molecular dynamic simulations are used to evaluate the structural changes, diffusivity, and selectivity of 2,3-BDO and water in different sPBI models, GO surfaces, and GO-doped sPBI composite models. Our results suggest that sPBI slightly increases the crystallinity of the membrane structures, enhances the adsorption strength for both 2,3-BDO and water, and improves the water/2,3-BDO selectivity by 2–3 times. The GO surfaces display a maximum selectivity at a surface coverage of 0.1–0.15 for both hydroxyl and epoxy surface groups. The addition of GO flakes to sPBI creates new interaction sites for 2,3-BDO and water at the interface of sPBI and GO, and the water/2,3-BDO selectivity of GO-doped sPBI models is further increased up to 3 times. This work illustrates how the integrated addition of sPBI and GO flakes offers a promising approach to selective separation of 2,3-BDO and water, providing theoretical guidance for polybenzimidazole-based membranes in the potential application of 2,3-BDO recovery.

Quaternary Ammonium-Functionalized Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfone) Random Copolymers for Direct Air Capture

Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising tool for reducing CO 2 concentrations in the atmosphere and fighting climate change. We synthesized a series of quaternary ammonium (QA) functionalized poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers with varying mole fractions of charge content and demonstrated their potential as sorbents for DAC. Molecular weight analysis determined high monomer conversion was achieved in <6 h and relatively high molecular weights for all copolymer compositions. Thermal analysis revealed all polymers had degradation temperatures >240 °C and a single glass transition temperature (T g ); the T g decreased with an increase in ion exchange capacity (IEC). Fractional free volume and water uptake percentage increased and water contact angle decreased with the number of QA sites when compared to a neutral, commercially available polysulfone (Udel® P-1700 PSU). Next, the novel series of ammonium-functionalized copolymers exhibited a moisture-mediated capture and release of atmospheric CO 2 . When exposed to air containing 30% relative humidity the polymers captured CO 2 and the capacity increased with the IEC. When the relative humidity was increased to 95% the samples released the CO 2 . This study demonstrates a promising CO 2 DAC sorbent and highlights the possibility for continuous DAC with purpose-built free-standing membranes.
