Your Best Single-Junction Solar Cell Does Not Always Make an Efficient Tandem Partner

Tandem solar cells, where multiple single-junction cells are combined optically in series, provide a path to making cells with high areal efficiencies, with multiple material systems capable of achieving greater than 30% efficiency under 1-sun conditions. However, there are many different material combinations and configurations used to make a tandem, and it can be challenging to understand how advances in one material system will impact the performance of a tandem device. Here, we have built an open-source calculator based on the spectral efficiency metric proposed by Yu et al. to easily enable calculation of spectral efficiency for single junctions and predicted maximum efficiency of tandem pairs, accounting for different optical and electrical coupling between the top and bottom junctions.

Near-infrared absorbing acceptor with suppressed triplet exciton generation enabling high performance tandem organic solar cells

Reducing the energy loss of sub-cells is critical for high performance tandem organic solar cells, while it is limited by the severe non-radiative voltage loss via the formation of non-emissive triplet excitons. Herein, we develop an ultra-narrow bandgap acceptor BTPSeV-4F through replacement of terminal thiophene by selenophene in the central fused ring of BTPSV-4F, for constructing efficient tandem organic solar cells. The selenophene substitution further decrease the optical bandgap of BTPSV-4F to 1.17 eV and suppress the formation of triplet exciton in the BTPSV-4F-based devices. The organic solar cells with BTPSeV-4F as acceptor demonstrate a higher power conversion efficiency of 14.2% with a record high short-circuit current density of 30.1 mA cm –2 and low energy loss of 0.55 eV benefitted from the low non-radiative energy loss due to the suppression of triplet exciton formation. We also develop a high-performance medium bandgap acceptor O1-Br for front cells. By integrating the PM6:O1-Br based front cells with the PTB7-Th:BTPSeV-4F based rear cells, the tandem organic solar cell demonstrates a power conversion efficiency of 19%. The results indicate that the suppression of triplet excitons formation in the near-infrared-absorbing acceptor by molecular design is an effective way to improve the photovoltaic performance of the tandem organic solar cells.

Light extraction in tandem organic light emitting diodes

Since the invention of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), great research efforts have been dedicated to improving their efficiency and lifetime. For high-brightness applications, tandem OLED structures have advantages because of the lower current densities required to achieve high brightness. With the successful development of highly efficient charge generation layers, high brightness tandem OLEDs are used in displays and lighting. However, the major challenge for tandem OLEDs is the low light extraction efficiency, because about 50% of the light is trapped inside the device as waveguide modes. In this Perspective, we first review the recent works done on light extraction, analyze different waveguide mode extraction structures, and then identify the key factors determining the extraction efficiencies in tandem OLEDs.

Luminescent Solar Concentrator Tandem-on-Silicon with above 700mV Passivated Contact Silicon Bottom Cell

Luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) tandem-on-silicon (Si) provides a route towards achieving higher than 30% overall efficiency which can overcome the theoretical efficiency limit of a single junction Si cell. Here, we present optical coupling and performance of high Voc passivated contact Si bottom cell for LSC tandem-on-Si where the top module consists of highly efficient luminophores and an array of micro InGaP cells embedded in a poly (lauryl methacrylate) waveguide. In this device configuration, InGaP cell area coverage is only ~0.5% of the total LSC area which significantly reduces the high cost III-V material usage. The performance of Si sub-cell is investigated under LSC spectrum and is compared against the measurement done under 1 um thick InGaP filter which mimics the spectrum seen by Si bottom cell in a conventional III-V/Si tandem. V oc of greater than 700 mV has been observed for the passivated contact Si bottom cell in these tandem applications.

GaAsP/Si Tandem Solar Cells: Pathway to Low-Cost, High-Efficiency Photovoltaics

Si is the dominant PV technology, now and for the foreseeable future, due to its extensive manufacturing infrastructure, supply chain, feedstock availability, and highly optimized degree of fabrication processes, which altogether has produced an economic scenario where PV electricity generation is often cheaper than conventional fossil based generation. In many places, the overarching goal of grid parity has been achieved, but further improvement in performance-cost metrics are still needed to sustain the continued LCOE reductions needed to not only compete with conventional generation, but displace it on a global scale; a matter of critical importance if we stand any hope of slowing climate change. Nevertheless, single-junction Si PV is already nearing its physical limit, both in performance and cost, and is thus cannot meet these long-term goals alone. To this end, we are working on the development of monolithic III-V/Si tandem solar cells, which improve upon the performance of pure Si by providing enhanced utilization (reduced thermalization) of high-energy photons. This architecture nominally combines the substantial existing knowledge base, manufacturing infrastructure, and low cost of Si PV with the high efficiencies afforded by the well-established multijunction approach — the only proven way to break the single-junction limit. Although the metal-halide perovskite/Si tandem architecture has garnered substantial attention in recent years, serious questions regarding reliability and service lifetime remain, whereas III-V PV has a proven track record, including in the harsh concentrator and space environments. Additionally, there are multiple fabrication approaches to producing III-V/Si tandem cells, but we are focused on monolithic epitaxial integration as it is the most likely to yield the lowest ultimate LCOE in a fully mature, scaled technology. In this work we have produced multiple generations of GaAsP/Si tandem solar cells, demonstrating a more than 10% absolute AM1.5G efficiency improvement within the time frame of the project, including two verified world records. We have done this using industry-standard fabrication methods, showing that this platform can ultimately be manufactured at scale using existing or only slightly upgraded Si and III-V tooling. Our scientific and engineering advances across a range of fundamental and applied areas – III-V/Si heteroepitaxial integration, defect control in metamorphic III-V epitaxy, fundamental materials-oriented solar cell design and modeling methodology, and more – have created clear pathways for continued advances toward the goal of >30% AM1.5G cell efficiency (and >25% module) and will serve to inform the broader research community for well beyond this immediate application. Techno-economic modeling indicates that our approach can indeed meet SunShot/SETO LCOE targets, but as with any “post-Si” technology there are difficult, but not insurmountable barriers, requiring continued focused research and development efforts.

Vapor–Fed Electrolyzers for Carbon Dioxide Reduction Using Tandem Electrocatalysts: Cuprous Oxide Coupled with Nickel–Coordinated Nitrogen–Doped Carbon

We report ethylene is particularly attractive due to its major importance as a feedstock for various applications including the polymer industry. As such, catalyst and electrolyzer developments are crucial to achieve industrially relevant ethylene production and efficiency levels. In this work, a tandem electrocatalyst composed of copper nanocubes and nickel-coordinated nitrogen-doped carbon (NiNC) is presented, which is integrated into gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for direct conversion of vapor-fed CO 2 into ethylene. Evaluation of tandem GDEs in the vapor-fed flow electrolyzer shows significantly increased ethylene selectivity in terms of faradaic efficiency and C 2 H 4 /CO ratio compared to a non-tandem copper GDE. The enhancements are attributed to the increased local CO availability near the copper surface via effective CO 2 to CO conversion on neighboring NiNC. The experimental results are validated by 3D resolved continuum simulations, which show increased flux of higher-order prod-ucts with the added CO flux from NiNC. The practical viability of Cu/NiNC catalyst is further evaluated in a membrane electrode assembly electrolyzer, achieving 40% FE toward ethylene at 150 mA cm -2 and 3.2 V. These find-ings highlight the high selectivity and formation rate of ethylene achieved by successful device integration of the Cu/NiNC catalyst, demonstrating the potential for implementation in large-scale sustainable CO 2 electrolyzers.

Minimizing Interfacial Recombination in 1.8 eV Triple‐Halide Perovskites for 27.5% Efficient All‐Perovskite Tandems

Abstract All‐perovskite tandem solar cells show great potential to enable the highest performance at reasonable costs for a viable market entry in the near future. In particular, wide‐bandgap (WBG) perovskites with higher open‐circuit voltage ( V OC ) are essential to further improve the tandem solar cells’ performance. Here, a new 1.8 eV bandgap triple‐halide perovskite composition in conjunction with a piperazinium iodide (PI) surface treatment is developed. With structural analysis, it is found that the PI modifies the surface through a reduction of excess lead iodide in the perovskite and additionally penetrates the bulk. Constant light‐induced magneto‐transport measurements are applied to separately resolve charge carrier properties of electrons and holes. These measurements reveal a reduced deep trap state density, and improved steady‐state carrier lifetime (factor 2.6) and diffusion lengths (factor 1.6). As a result, WBG PSCs achieve 1.36 V V OC , reaching 90% of the radiative limit. Combined with a 1.26 eV narrow bandgap (NBG) perovskite with a rubidium iodide additive, this enables a tandem cell with a certified scan efficiency of 27.5%.

Advances in Mixed Tin‐Lead Narrow‐Bandgap Perovskites for Single‐Junction and All‐Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells

Abstract Organic–inorganic metal‐halide perovskites have received great attention for photovoltaic (PV) applications owing to their superior optoelectronic properties and the unprecedented performance development. For single‐junction PV devices, although lead (Pb)‐based perovskite solar cells have achieved 26.1% efficiency, the mixed tin‐lead (Sn‐Pb) perovskites offer more ideal bandgap tuning capability to enable an even higher performance. The Sn‐Pb perovskite (with a bandgap tuned to ≈1.2 eV) is also attractive as the bottom subcell for a tandem configuration to further surpass the Shockley–Queisser radiative limit for the single‐junction devices. The performance of the all‐perovskite tandem solar cells has gained rapid development and achieved a certified efficiency up to 29.1%. In this article, the properties and recent development of state‐of‐the‐art mixed Sn‐Pb perovskites and their application in single‐junction and all‐perovskite tandem solar cells are reviewed. Recent advances in various approaches covering additives, solvents, interfaces, and perovskite growth are highlighted. The authors also provide the perspective and outlook on the challenges and strategies for further development of mixed Sn‐Pb perovskites in both efficiency and stability for PV applications.

Reliability of tandem solar cells and modules: what's next?

Hybrid tandem photovoltaic (PV) technology development has gained momentum in the last few years. This has been motivated by a need to push module efficiencies beyond what is theoretically capable with single-junction technologies to further accelerate total global PV deployment. Significant advances have been made with multiple material systems achieving tandem efficiencies over 30% in the last decade. All of the highest record efficiencies have been from laboratory-scale devices, with areas of 1 cm2 or less. Interestingly, there are multiple material combinations and terminal configurations that have demonstrated promising results. Despite these high laboratory efficiencies, reasonable service lifetimes (a useful operating lifetime of at least 25 years) are needed for tandems to compete with the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of traditional single junction PV technologies. Existing commercial Si PV products have demonstrated performance in the field with an average of less than 1% relative annual degradation in module and system performance, and many manufacturers now provide 30 year warranties on their products.

Flow-induced oscillation patterns for two tandem cylinders with turbulence stimulation and variable stiffness and damping

Herein, the oscillation patterns of two 1-DOF cylinder oscillators, undergoing VIV and galloping, are investigated in a free surface water channel for 3.2 × 104 ≤ Re ≤ 1.2 × 10 5 . The cylinders are arranged in tandem and supported by springs for a range of different spring stiffness and damping parameters. The efficiency of a current energy converter (CEC), based on flow-induced oscillation (FIO) of multiple cylinders in tandem, is critically related to the cylinder oscillation patterns. Due to the limited number of studies on the FIO for multiple cylindrical or prismatic bodies, their oscillation patterns have neither been identified nor classified. The surfaces of the cylinders are modified by turbulence stimulation to enhance FIO. Three different center-to-center spacing, five stiffness, and six damping ratios, for a total of 90 sets of experiments were conducted. The current velocity range is from 0.34 m/s to 1.32 m/s. From more than 2000 tests, five major patterns, nine sub-patterns are identified and classified. The patterns are defined based on the amplitudes, frequencies and the phase angle differences between the two cylinders. The characteristics and mechanics of each oscillation pattern are explored and explained from the perspective of fluid-structure interaction (FSI). By systematically varying the parameters, the underlying hydrodynamic mechanisms, including the coupling level between vortices and cylinders, the shielding effect, the wake effect, and the stability states are revealed. Few preliminary observations on the connection between oscillation pattern and harnessed power by the tandem cylinders are reported.

Experimental and computational investigation of interactive flow induced oscillations of two tandem rough cylinders at 3×10 4 ≤Re≤1.2×10 5

The interactive flow induced oscillations (FIO) of two adjacent, elastically mounted, rigid, tandem, locally-rough cylinders in transverse flow direction are analyzed utilizing two-dimensional Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (2-D URANS) equations and verified experimentally in the proximity-wake region. Three sets of experiments and simulations (K = 600N/m, ζ = 0.14; K = 600N/m, ζ = 0.26; K = 1,200N/m, ζ = 0.26; K is spring stiffness, ζ is damping ratio) of two tandem cylinders with turbulence stimulation are tested and simulated for Reynolds number in the range of 30,000 = Re ≤ 120,000. The reduced velocity range is U* = 2.48–14.22, the mass ratio is m* = 1.343, and the center-to-center in-flow spacing to diameter ratio is d/D = 2.57. The characteristics of amplitude response, frequency response, lift force, and interactive wake patterns are presented and discussed. The trends of the amplitude and frequency responses from numerical simulations are in good agreement with experimental results. The main conclusions of Reynolds number effect on interactive flow induced oscillations are: (1) Five significant flow patterns between two tandem locally-rough cylinders for different Reynolds numbers are observed through analyzing the complex but stable interactions between vortices and cylinders. (2) In the initial and upper VIV branches, the downstream cylinder's FIO is seriously interfered by the wake of the upstream cylinder. (3) The downstream cylinder is strongly impinged by the vortices shed from the upstream cylinder resulting in nearly 180O out-of-phase oscillations in transition from VIV to galloping and in-phase oscillations in galloping.

Photoactivated p-Doping of Organic Interlayer Enables Efficient Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells

Solution-processed organic semiconductor layers on rough surfaces tend to vary widely in thickness, significantly hindering charge extraction in relevant optoelectronic devices. Herein, we report the photoactivated p-doping of hole-transporting material (HTM) to enhance hole extraction for (textured) perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, making the device performance less sensitive to the variation of hole transport layer thickness. We used the ionic compound 4-isopropyl-4'-methyldiphenyliodonium tetrakis(penta-fluorophenyl-borate) (DPI-TPFB) as a p-type dopant in poly(triaryl amine) (PTAA), which we used as the HTM. We observed that light soaking DPI-TPFB-doped PTAA shows approximately 22 times higher conductivity compared with an undoped PTAA film, which translated into an improved fill factor (FF) for tandem solar cells. Our tandem solar cells achieved an ~80% FF and 27.8% efficiency and operated at their maximum power point for 200 h without loss of performance, in addition to retaining ~83% of initial performance over a month of operation in an outdoor environment.

Carrier control in Sn–Pb perovskites via 2D cation engineering for all-perovskite tandem solar cells with improved efficiency and stability

All-perovskite tandem solar cells are promising for achieving photovoltaics with power conversion efficiencies above the detailed balance limit of single-junction cells, while retaining the low cost, light weight and other advantages associated with metal halide perovskite photovoltaics. However, the efficiency and stability of all-perovskite tandem cells are limited by the Sn-Pb-based narrow-bandgap perovskite cells. Here we show that the formation of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) structure (PEA) 2 GAPb 2 I 7 from additives based on mixed bulky organic cations phenethylammonium (PEA+) and guanidinium (GA+) provides critical defect control to substantially improve the structural and optoelectronic properties of the narrow-bandgap (1.25 eV) Sn-Pb perovskite thin films. Additionally, this 2D additive engineering results in Sn-Pb-based absorbers with low dark carrier density (~1.3 x 10 14 cm -3 ), long bulk carrier lifetime (~9.2 us) and low surface recombination velocity (~1.4 cm s -1 ), leading to 22.1%-efficient single-junction Sn-Pb perovskite cells and 25.5%-efficient all-perovskite two-terminal tandems with high photovoltage and long operational stability.

Tandem synthesis of tetrahydroquinolines and identification of the reaction network by operando NMR

The study of the reaction mechanism and complex network for heterogeneously catalyzed tandem reactions is challenging but can guide reaction design and optimization. Here, we describe a case study using bifunctional metal–organic framework supported Pd nanoparticles (Pd/UiO-66(HCl)) for the one-pot tandem synthesis of substituted tetrahydroquinolines via the Claisen–Schmidt condensation and reductive intramolecular cyclization. The directly observed evolution of intermediates and products, including reactive species containing hydroxylamine group and unstable intermediate 2-phenyl-3,4-dihydroquinoline, was enabled by operando magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance studies under 50 bar H 2 . The reaction network of the tandem reaction is deduced based on reaction kinetic information obtained from the operando study. The optimized procedure was applied to various acetophenone and nitrobenzaldehyde derivatives carrying different functional groups, and eight valuable substituted tetrahydroquinolines were obtained in moderate to good yields. This work provides a molecular-level understanding of the catalytic system and brings up new opportunities for efficient and sustainable synthesis of medicinally relevant building blocks.

Design principles of tandem cascade photoelectrochemical devices

Cascade photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) is a possible method to improve the selectivity of solar-driven CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R). This concept can be realized by coupling different CO 2 R catalysts to different subcells in a multijunction photovoltaic (PV) stack. Efficient implementation will require careful tuning of the photocurrents and design of the photovoltages provided by the subcells to the CO 2 R catalysts in such a way as to facilitate the target reaction. Here, we outline the design principles of the tandem PEC approach using two-step conversion of CO 2 to ethylene in aqueous electrolyte, via a CO intermediate, as a model system. To perform this reaction, the first coupled PV-catalyst component should provide 4 electrons to reduce 2 molecules of CO 2 to CO; the second component should provide 8 electrons to reduce 2 CO molecules to C 2 H 4 . Based on known CO 2 R catalysts, the overpotential required to produce CO can be less than that required to reduce it to ethylene, creating the opportunity for improved efficiency. Cascade PEC can be realized in a three-terminal tandem (3TT) configuration using III–V-semiconductor based subcells coupled to Au (produces CO intermediate) and Cu (converts CO to ethylene). The current to each catalyst can be controlled by the area of the subcell exposed to the electrolyte, and the photovoltage is determined by the materials selected and device configuration. Operating conditions are found by simulating the coupled system using the open-source circuit simulator SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuits Emphasis). We identify conditions under which a 3TT configuration can have a higher solar to chemical conversion efficiency compared to a two-terminal two-junction tandem (2T 2J) with the same absorbers and a Cu catalyst only. We also show that 3TT PEC devices can be less sensitive to variations in catalyst activity compared to 2T devices. Lastly, we discuss the applications of cascade PEC to CO 2 reduction, using different intermediates, and to other chemical networks.

Performance Modeling of Tandem Photovoltaics: A Yearlong Outdoor Degradation Analysis of a Ga⁢As//Si Minimodule

We present a performance modeling and degradation analysis framework for tandem photovoltaic modules, building upon established procedures for crystalline silicon devices and adapting them to account for the spectral sensitivity of multijunction technologies. The methodology employs filter criteria to select outdoor measurements close to standard test conditions (STC) under stable spectral and ambient conditions, followed by normalization of power production data with corrections for temperature, irradiance, and precipitable water vapor. We demonstrate this framework using a mechanically stacked four-terminal gallium arsenide (Ga⁢As) // silicon (Si) tandem solar minimodule deployed outdoors from October 2019 to January 2021 in Golden, Colorado, USA. We determined degradation rates of −4.1 ±0.2%/year for the Ga⁢As subcell and −2.5 ±0.9%/year for the Si subcell, with analysis of individual performance metrics indicating that packaging degradation, particularly delamination, was the dominant failure mode. Simulations using PVcircuit, an open-source equivalent-circuit solver, confirmed these findings. The presented methodology provides a reproducible foundation for performance modeling and degradation analysis of emerging tandem technologies.

Three-Terminal Bipolar Junction Bottom Cell as Simple as PERC: Towards Lean Tandem Cell Processing

Silicon-based tandem cells are a potential upgrade for the dominating PERC technology and can greatly increase the conversion efficiency. A novel approach, the three-terminal (3T) tandem using interdigitated back-contact (IBC) cells, was shown to combine the advantages of four- and two-terminal tandem cells at the expense of a more complex bottom cell fabrication process. In this paper, we propose a simplified and lean PERC-like 3T bipolar junction bottom cell featuring two minority-carrier selective contacts and a single majority-carrier selective contact, and thus resembling a bipolar junction transistor architecture. We present the lean PERC-like fabrication process and explain the working principle by using current-voltage measurements of illuminated 3T IBC cells.

Monolithic Two-Terminal All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells with Power Conversion Efficiency Exceeding 21%

Monolithic two-terminal (2-T) all-perovskite tandem solar cells are a promising candidate for the next generation solar cells with ultrahigh efficiency and low fabrication cost. Here, we report on the fabrication of 2-T all-perovskite tandem solar cells consisting of solution-processed wide-bandgap and low-bandgap perovskite subcells connected by a vacuum processed interconnection layer. We employed a bulk-passivation strategy to enlarge the grain size, increase carrier mobilities, reduce electronic disorder, and suppress trap-assisted recombination in the low bandgap mixed Sn-Pb perovskite films, which leads to improved performance of low bandgap perovskite solar cells with an absorber thickness over 750 nm. This advance in high-quality low-bandgap perovskite layers enables the fabrication of efficient 2-T all-perovskite solar cells with power conversion efficiencies of more than 21% and decent stability. Our approach provides a suitable pathway to realize ultra-high efficiency 2-T all-perovskite tandem solar cells.
