As‐Cast Ternary Organic Solar Cells Based on an Asymmetric Side‐Chains Featured Acceptor with Reduced Voltage Loss and 14.0% Efficiency

Abstract A new small‐molecule nonfullerene acceptor based on the benzo[1,2‐ b :4,5‐ b ′]dithiophene (BDT) fused central core with asymmetrical alkoxy and thienyl side chains, namely TOBDT , is designed and synthesized. The alkoxy unit helps narrow the bandgap, and thienyl side chain helps enhance the intermolecular interaction. As a result, TOBDT is suitable to match the deep‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of polymer donor PM6 . Then, a strong crystalline acceptor IDIC is introduced as the third component to fabricate as‐cast nonfullerene ternary devices to achieve absorption and morphology control. Addition of IDIC not only mixes well with TOBDT but modulates the morphology of the blend film, which helps to balance the charge transport properties and reduce the photovoltage loss of ternary devices. All these contribute to synergetic improvement of J sc , V oc , and fill factor parameters, leading to a power conversion efficiency of 14.0% for the as‐cast fullerene‐free ternary device.

High‐Performance Green Thick‐Film Ternary Organic Solar Cells Enabled by Crystallinity Regulation

Abstract The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) has reached high values of over 19%. However, most of the high‐efficiency OSCs are fabricated by spin‐coating with toxic solvents and the optimal photoactive layer thickness is limited to 100 nm, limiting practical development of OSCs. It is a great challenge to obtain ideal morphology for high‐efficiency thick‐film OSCs when using non‐halogenated solvents due to the unfavorable film formation kinetics. Herein, high‐efficiency ternary thick‐film (300 nm) OSCs with PCE of 15.4% based on PM6:BTR‐Cl:CH1007 are fabricated by hot slot‐die coating using non‐halogenated solvent (o‐xylene) in the air. Compared to PM6:BTR‐Cl:Y6 blends, the stronger pre‐aggregation of CH1007 in solution induces the earlier aggregation of CH1007 molecules and longer aggregation time, and thus results in high and balanced crystallinity of donors and acceptor in CH1007‐based ternary film, which led to high‐carrier mobility and suppressed charge recombination. The ternary strategy is further used to fabricate high‐efficiency, thick‐film, large‐area, and flexible devices processed from non‐halogenated solvents, paving the way for industrial development of OSCs.

Fine‐Tuning Alkyl Chains on Quinoxaline Nonfullerene Acceptors Enables High‐Efficiency Ternary Organic Solar Cells with Optimizing Molecular Stacking and Reducing Energy Loss

Abstract Material design of guest acceptor is always a big challenge for improving the efficiency of ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, a pair of isomeric nonfullerene acceptors based on quinoxaline core, Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O and Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O, is designed and synthesized. By moving the alkoxy chain attached on side phenyl frommeta‐position topara‐position, both π–π stacking distance and crystallinity are enhanced simultaneously. They obtain the uplifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. Compared to Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O, Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O exhibits wider absorption spectrum and higher extinction coefficient. Using D18‐Cl:N3 as host materials, the addition of guest acceptor Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O significantly improves the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 17.61% to 18.49% because of higher open‐circuit voltage (0.875 V) and short‐circuit current density (27.85 mA cm −2 ). This can be attributed to the faster exciton dissociation, more balanced carrier mobility, fine fiber morphology, and lower energy loss in the ternary devices. However, Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O‐based ternary device achieves relatively low PCE of 17.17% because this device shows extremely low electron mobility. The results indicate that molecular stacking, film morphology, etc., can be effectively modulated by fine‐tuning the side chains of guest materials, which may be an effective design rule for further improving the PCE of OSCs.

A New Family of Ternary Intermetallic Compounds with Dualistic Atomic Ordering – The ZIP Phases

A new family of nanostructured ternary intermetallic compounds − named the ZIP phases − is introduced in this work. The ZIP phases exhibit dualistic atomic ordering, i.e., they form two structural variants: one with the fcc diamond cubic structure (space group Fd$\bar{3}$m) and one with the hexagonal structure (space group P6 3 /mmc). They are also characterized by metallic behavior, ionic bonding, and atomic zigzagging. Powder metallurgical routes involving pressure-assisted densification are adopted to demonstrate ZIP phase synthesis in the Nb-Si-Ni, Nb-Si-Co, Ta-Si-Ni, V-Si-Ni, and Nb-Si-Fe ternary systems. Crucially, reactive hot pressing is capable of producing high-purity ZIP phase materials after the judicious, elemental system-specific optimization of the processing route. Synthesis of phase-pure materials – demonstrated in the Nb-Si-Ni ternary system by the synthesis of quasi phase-pure Nb 3 SiNi 2 and Ni 3 SiNb 2 ZIP phase-based materials – is a steppingstone to the prospective exploitation of the ZIP phases. Characterization of Nb 3 SiNi 2 and Ni 3 SiNb 2 involves crystal structure determination, spatially resolved chemical analysis, and determination of select thermal, electrical, magnetic, mechanical, and physical properties. Density functional theory is used to assess the stability of Nb 3 SiNi 2 & Ni 3 SiNb 2 and derivative binary compounds at different temperatures, also exploring the exfoliation of these two ZIP phases along specific surfaces to produce 2D derivatives.

High‐Performance Ternary Organic Solar Cells with Enhanced Luminescence Efficiency and Miscibility Enabled by Two Compatible Acceptors

Abstract The ternary strategy has proven to be an effective method for improving the efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, designing and selecting the third component still pose challenges. In this study, this issue is addressed by focusing on the PBDB‐T:Y18‐F binary system and introducing a new, strong luminescent, asymmetric small‐molecule acceptor (SMA) called L8‐CBIC‐Cl, which shares a similar skeleton with Y18‐F. The similarity in molecular framework facilitates good compatibility between the two acceptors, resulting in the formation of an alloy‐like acceptor phase. Furthermore, the norbornenyl‐modified end group in L8‐CBIC‐Cl contributes to its strong luminescent properties, which in turn leads to a low non‐radiative energy loss and a high open‐circuit voltage. Consequently, the PBDB‐T:L8‐CBIC‐Cl:Y18‐F based ternary devices realize a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 17.01%, which is higher than PBDB‐T:Y18‐F device (14.49%). Importantly, L8‐CBIC‐Cl exhibits a good universality as a guest acceptor in other three binary systems (D18:Y6, D18:BTP‐eC9‐4F, and D18:L8‐BO). The D18:L8‐BO:L8‐CBIC‐Cl device shows an impressive efficiency of 19%. The work demonstrates that employing SMA with a high PLQY and better miscibility with host acceptor as the third component has a great potential for developing high‐efficiency ternary OSCs.

Surface Segregation Studies in Ternary Noble Metal Alloys: Comparing DFT and Machine Learning with Experimental Data

Abstract Surface segregation, whereby the surface composition of an alloy differs systematically from the bulk, has historically been hard to study, because it requires experimental and modeling methods that span alloy composition space. In this work, we study surface segregation in catalytically relevant noble and platinum‐group metal alloys with a focus on three ternary systems: AgAuCu, AuCuPd, and CuPdPt. We develop a data set of 2478 fcc slabs with those compositions including all three low‐index crystallographic orientations relaxed with Density Functional Theory using the PBEsol functional with D3 dispersion corrections. We fine‐tune a machine learning model on this data and use the model in a series of 1800 Monte Carlo simulations spanning ternary composition space for each surface orientation and ternary chemical system. The results of these simulations are validated against prior experimental surface segregation data collected using composition spread alloy films for AgAuCu and AuCuPd. Our findings reveal that simulations conducted using the (110) orientation most closely match experimentally observed surface segregation trends, and while predicted trends qualitatively match observation, biases in the PBEsol functional limit numeric accuracy. This study advances understanding of surface segregation and the utility of computational studies and highlights the need for further improvements in simulation accuracy.

Assessing Mg–Sc–(rare earth) ternary phase stability via constituent binary cluster expansions

The disordered Mg–Sc body-centered cubic (bcc) phase is both lightweight and strong; however, the system is impractical for general industrial use due to the high cost of scandium. Here we propose a computationally efficient metric that assesses ternary rare earth element additions that may stabilize the bcc phase at lower Sc concentrations. We find that the bcc phase is stabilized by the ternary addition of Y or Er, but not by La, Ce, or Nd, and we validate these predictions by experimental production and characterization of Mg–Sc–(Y,Er,Nd) alloys. The results suggest a computationally efficient method to anticipate integration of ternary elements into binary systems using cluster expansions of constituent binaries.

Constructing high-performance radiation-resistant ternary YSZ-MgO-CNT nanocomposites via tailored nanostructures

Developing long-lifetime bulk-form ceramic-based materials with high irradiation resistance is crucial for advanced nuclear systems. Here, we incorporated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and magnesia (MgO) nanocrystals to fabricate bulk YSZ-MgO-CNT nanocomposites with abundant ternary nanostructures by spark plasma sintering. To understand the role of tailored ternary nanostructure on irradiation, we investigated the microstructure and mechanical properties evolutions of the YSZ-MgO-CNT nanocomposites irradiated by multi-energy He + ions at high temperature to different fluences. Compared with the single-phase YSZ and ultrafine-grained YSZ-MgO composites, the YSZ-MgO-CNT nanocomposites possessed higher ability to manage irradiation-induced He bubbles/defects via the defect-interface interactions of proposed “loading-unloading” and “loading-transporting-unloading” mechanisms for controlling the dynamical behaviors of He atoms/defects in the CNT-doped ternary nanostructures, thereby presenting more stable microstructure and better performance in resisting irradiation hardening. In conclusion, this work provides insight into the design of advanced inert matrix nuclear fuel and new nuclear waste management materials.

Synthesis and Structural Study of Substituted Ternary Nitrides for Ammonia Production

Over the past few decades, inorganic nitride materials have grown in importance in part due to their potential as catalysts for the synthesis of NH 3 , a key ingredient in fertilizer and precursor to industrial chemicals. Of particular interest are the ternary (ABN) or higher-order nitrides with high metal-to-nitrogen ratios that show promise in enhancing NH 3 synthesis reaction rates and yields via heterogeneous catalysis or chemical looping. Although metal nitrides are predicted to be numerous, the stability of nitrogen triple bonds found in N 2 , especially in comparison to the metal–nitrogen bonds, has considerably hindered synthetic efforts to produce complex nitride compounds. In this study, we present an exhaustive down-selection process to identify ternary nitrides for a promising chemical looping NH 3 production mechanism. We also report on a facile and efficient two-step synthesis method that can produce well-characterized η-carbide Co 3 Mo 3 N/Fe 3 Mo 3 N or filled β-manganese Ni 2 Mo 3 N ternaries, as well as their associated quaternary, (Co,Fe) 3 Mo 3 N, (Fe,Ni) 2 Mo 3 N, and (Co,Ni) 2 Mo 3 N, solid solutions. To further explore the quaternary space, syntheses of (Co,Ni) 3 Mo 3 N (Ni ≤ 10 mol %) and Co 3 (Mo,W) 3 N (W ≤ 10 mol %) were also investigated. The structures of the nitrides were characterized via X-ray powder diffraction. The morphology and compositions were characterized with scanning electron microscopy. In conclusion, the multitude of chemically unique, but structurally related, nitrides suggests that properties such as nitrogen activity may be tunable, making the materials of great interest for NH 3 synthesis schemes.

Efficient Control of Atom Arrangement in Ternary Metal Chalcogenide Nanoparticles Using Precursor Oxidation State

Controlling both the concentration and the distribution of elements in a given material is often crucial to extracting and optimizing synergistic properties of the various constituents. An interesting class of such multielement materials is metal chalcogenide nanoparticles, which exhibit a wide range of composition-dependent optoelectronic properties including both bandgap-mediated processes and localized surface plasmon resonance properties, each of which is useful in applications ranging from energy conversion to sensing. Because metal chalcogenide nanoparticles can support several different metal elements in a variety of chalcogen lattices, this material class has particularly benefited from the ability to control both atom concentration and atom arrangement to tailor final particle properties. The primary method to access complex, multimetallic chalcogenide particles is via a postsynthetic cation exchange strategy. One-pot syntheses have been less explored to access these complex particles, although this route is desirable for economy and scalability. In this work, we compare the composition and morphology outcomes from cation exchange and one-pot preparation approaches using a Cu/Ag/Se system, which is already known to exhibit both binary and ternary metal chalcogenide phases. We show that at similar concentrations of the two metal cations, initial reaction conditions for the one-pot method yield multicomponent nanoparticles, whereas cation exchange yields homogeneous ternary metal chalcogenide structures. We then show that by tuning the precursor oxidation state for the one-pot method, this approach can be used to access homogeneous ternary metal chalcogenide particles that are similar in atom arrangement to the particles obtained using cation exchange. Taken together, our results demonstrate reliable synthetic methods that yield a variety of controlled compositions and composition morphologies in the Cu/Ag/Se system. Importantly, we demonstrate that this entire collection of architectures can all be accessed via a one-pot method simply by modifying metal precursor chemistry. The mechanistic insights gained and the resulting streamlined syntheses outlined indicate pathways to easily scaled, highly tailorable syntheses for rapid translation into downstream technologies.

Machine Learning-Guided Discovery of Ternary Compounds Containing La, P, and Group 14 Elements

In this work, we integrate a deep machine learning (ML) method with first-principles calculations to efficiently search for the energetically favorable ternary compounds. Using La–Si–P as a prototype system, we demonstrate that ML-guided first-principles calculations can efficiently explore crystal structures and their relative energetic stabilities, thus greatly accelerate the pace of material discovery. A number of new La–Si–P ternary compounds with formation energies less than 30 meV/atom above the known ternary convex hull are discovered. Among them, the formation energies of La 5 SiP 3 and La 2 SiP phases are only 2 and 10 meV/atom, respectively, above the convex hull. These two compounds are dynamically stable with no imaginary phonon modes. Moreover, by replacing Si with heavier-group 14 elements in the eight lowest-energy La–Si–P structures from our ML-guided predictions, a number of low-energy La–X–P phases (X = Ge, Sn, Pb) are predicted.

Machine Learning-Guided Exploration of Ternary Metal Borohydrides

We employ deep machine learning (ML) combined with first-principles calculations to explore energetically favorable ternary metal borohydrides. Using La–B–H as a prototype system, we demonstrate that iteratively trained ML models can efficiently screen hundreds of thousands of hypothetical structures and accurately select a small fraction of promising structures and compositions for further studies by first-principles calculations. Such an ML-guided approach dramatically accelerates the pace of materials discovery. A number of new La–B–H ternary compounds with formation energies within 100 meV/atom above the known ternary convex hull are discovered, including a known stable La(BH 4 ) 3 phase. Moreover, by replacing La with Group 1, 2, 3, 13, and 14 elements in the four lowest-energy La–B–H structures from our ML-guided predictions, several low-energy X–B-H (X = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Sc, Y, Ac, Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) compounds are predicted.

Coloring Tetrahedral Semiconductors: Synthesis and Photoluminescence Enhancement of Ternary II-III 2 -VI 4 Colloidal Nanocrystals

Ternary tetrahedral II-III 2 -VI 4 semiconductors, where II is Zn or Cd, III In or Ga, and VI S, Se, or Te, are of interest in UV radiation detectors in medicine and space physics as well as CO 2 photoreduction under visible light. We synthesize colloidal II-III 2 -VI 4 semiconductor nanocrystals from readily available precursors and ascertain their ternary nature by structural and spectroscopic methods, including 77 Se solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The pyramidally shaped nanocrystals range between 2 and 12 nm and exhibit optical gaps of 2–3.9 eV. In the presence of excess anions on the particle surface, treatment with Lewis acidic, Z-type ligands results in better passivation and enhanced photoluminescence. Electronic structure calculations reveal the most stable, lowest energy polymorphs and coloring patterns. This work will pave the way toward more environmentally friendly, ternary semiconductors for optoelectronics and electrocatalysis.

Air-stable ternary organic solar cells achieved by using fullerene additives in non-fullerene acceptor-polymer donor blends

Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on donor–acceptor blends have shown a rapid improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) now approaching, for small cells, those of the state-of-the art commercial solar modules. However, performance degradation remains one of the most critical impediments for OSC technology commercialization. Ternary solar cells where a third component, for instance an acceptor, is added to a non-fullerene acceptor–polymer donor blend are an effective approach for improving both OSC efficiency and long-term stability. Here, in this work, we study the role of two fullerene acceptors, ET18 and PCBM, as the third component in P D :Y6 blends. These fullerene derivatives significantly enhance the cell stability, which retained >90% of their initial PCEs (13–14%) even after storage in air for 6 months, compared to only ~20% retention for the binary devices. GIWAXS, AFM, in situ impedance spectroscopy and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements reveal that the enhanced stability of the ternary devices results from a more robust blend morphology reducing charge recombination in the ternary devices during aging.

Effect of poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] side chain length on the brush swelling behavior in A/B/A–B ternary blends with polystyrene

The phase behavior of ternary blends composed of two homopolymers (A, B) and their corresponding diblock copolymer (A–B) has been widely studied, with emphasis on the volumetrically symmetric isopleth and the formation of bicontinuous microemulsions. However, almost all the previous studies employed linear polymers, and little is known about the impact of polymer architecture on the phase behavior of such ternary blends. Here, in this work, we report the self-assembly of three sets of ternary blends of polystyrene (PS) and poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (POEGMA n ), with different lengths of oligo(ethylene glycol) side chains n. Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to probe the phase behavior at different compositions and temperatures. The order-to-disorder transition temperature was found to be impacted by the side chain length. It was also observed that longer side chains lead to poorer miscibility of homopolymers in the corresponding block, resulting in a more “dry-brush” like swelling behavior.

Structural and photoelectrochemical properties in the thin film system Cu–Fe–V–O and its ternary subsystems Fe–V–O and Cu–V–O

Thin-film material libraries in the ternary and quaternary metal oxide systems Fe–V–O, Cu–V–O, and Cu–Fe–V–O were synthesized using combinatorial reactive co-sputtering with subsequent annealing in air. Their compositional, structural, and functional properties were assessed using high-throughput characterization methods. Prior to the investigation of the quaternary system Cu–Fe–V–O, the compositions (Fe 61 V 39 )O x and (Cu 52 V 48 )O x with promising photoactivity were identified from their ternary subsystems Fe–V–O and Cu–V–O, respectively. Two Cu–Fe–V–O material libraries with (Cu 29-72 Fe 4-27 V 22-57 )O x and (Cu 11-55 Fe 27-73 V 12-34 )O x composition spread were investigated. Seven mixed ternary and quaternary phase regions were identified: I (α-Cu 3 FeV 6 O 26 /FeVO 4 ), II (Cu 5 V 2 O 10 /FeVO 4 /α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 ), III (Cu 5 V 2 O 10 ), IV (Cu 5 V 2 O 10 /FeVO 4 , V (FeVO 4 /γ-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 /α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 ), VI (β-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 /α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 /FeVO 4 ), and VII (β-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 /FeVO 4 ). Furthermore, in the investigated composition range, two photoactive regions, (Cu 53 Fe 7 V 40 )O x and (Cu 45 Fe 21 V 34 )O x , were identified, exhibiting 103 μ A/cm 2 and 108 μ A/cm 2 photocurrent density for the oxygen evolution reaction at 1.63 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, respectively. The highest photoactive region (Cu 45 Fe 21 V 34 )O x comprises the dominant α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 24 phase and minor FeVO 4 phase. This photoactive region corresponds to having an indirect bandgap of 1.87 eV and a direct bandgap of 2.58 eV with an incident photon-to-current efficiency of 30% at a wavelength of 310 nm.

Multi-fidelity machine-learning with uncertainty quantification and Bayesian optimization for materials design: Application to ternary random alloys

We present a scale-bridging approach based on a multi-fidelity (MF) machine-learning (ML) framework leveraging Gaussian processes (GP) to fuse atomistic computational model predictions across multiple levels of fidelity. Through the posterior variance of the MFGP, our framework naturally enables uncertainty quantification, providing estimates of confidence in the predictions. We used density functional theory as high-fidelity prediction, while a ML interatomic potential is used as low-fidelity prediction. Practical materials’ design efficiency is demonstrated by reproducing the ternary composition dependence of a quantity of interest (bulk modulus) across the full aluminum–niobium–titanium ternary random alloy composition space. The MFGP is then coupled to a Bayesian optimization procedure, and the computational efficiency of this approach is demonstrated by performing an on-the-fly search for the global optimum of bulk modulus in the ternary composition space. The framework presented in this manuscript is the first application of MFGP to atomistic materials simulations fusing predictions between density functional theory and classical interatomic potential calculations.

Interactions between nonfullerene acceptors lead to unstable ternary organic photovoltaic cells

For organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices to achieve consistent performance and long operational lifetimes, organic semiconductors must be processed with precise control over their purity, composition, and structure. This is particularly important for high volume solar cell manufacturing where control of materials quality has a direct impact on yield and cost. Ternary-blend OPVs containing two acceptor–donor–acceptor (A–D–A)-type nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) and a donor have proven to be an effective strategy to improve solar spectral coverage and reduce energy losses beyond that of binary-blend OPVs. Here, we show that the purity of such a ternary is compromised during blending to form a homogeneously mixed bulk heterojunction thin film. We find that the impurities originate from end-capping C=C/C=C exchange reactions of A–D–A-type NFAs, and that their presence influences both device reproducibility and long-term reliability. The end-capping exchange results in generation of up to four impurity constituents with strong dipolar character that interfere with the photoinduced charge transfer process, leading to reduced charge generation efficiency, morphological instabilities, and an increased vulnerability to photodegradation. As a consequence, the OPV efficiency falls to less than 65% of its initial value within 265 h when exposed to up to 10 suns intensity illumination. We propose potential molecular design strategies critical to enhancing the reproducibility as well as reliability of ternary OPVs by avoiding end-capping reactions.
