Properties and reaction mechanism of phosphoric acid activated metakaolin geopolymer at varied curing temperatures

Reaction mechanism of phosphoric activated metakaolin is studied by techniques of calorimetry, ICP-OES, FTIR and NMR taking curing temperature and [H{sub 3}PO{sub 4}] as variables. A two-stage curing method including pre-curing at 40 °C for 24 h and second curing at 60/80 °C for another 24 h effectively mitigates thermal-cracking of the obtained silico-aluminate phosphate (SAP) samples, whose maximum compressive strength reaches 120 MPa. Dealumination of metakaolin in H{sub 3}PO{sub 4} solution produces low aluminate-containing silicate units and subsequently condensation of silicate tetrahedrons occurs. Higher temperature and H{sub 3}PO{sub 4} concentration accelerate the two processes. After complete reaction, A{sub VI} structure from metakaolin disappears and the dissolved Al preferably forms Al{sub VI}-O-P units. During reaction, metastable P-O-P intermediate appears in SAPs with higher P/Al ratio and finally transforms into Al-O-P structure upon PO{sub 4}{sup 3−} consumption. Phosphate units as P(OAl){sub x}(H{sub 2}O){sub 4-x} are connected with Si or Al structure units. Major structural units of the SAPs include Al-O-P, Si-O-P, Si-O-Si, and Si-O-Al.

Multi-plane moment-of-fluid interface reconstruction in 3D

Moment-of-fluid (MOF) methods for interface reconstruction approximate the region occupied by material in each mesh element only through reference to its geometric moments. Here, we present a 3D MOF method that represents the material (POM) in each cell as the convex intersection of the cell and multiple half-spaces, each selected to minimize the least-squares error between computed moments of the approximated material and provided reference moments. This optimization problem is highly non-linear and non-convex, making the numerical result very sensitive to the initial guess. To create an effective initial guess in each cell, we construct an ellipsoid from 0th–2nd order reference moments such that its shape corresponds with that of the POM. Within this ellipsoid we inscribe a polyhedron, and initialize the minimization problem with the half-spaces defined by each of its faces. The inscribed polyhedron has minimally 4 faces, and using up to 3rd order moments permits optimization over up to 20 unknown values. We therefore define MOF methods that utilize 4, 5, or 6 half-spaces, correspondingly initialized with the faces of a single inscribed tetrahedron, triangular prism, or hexahedron. Stability of the non-linear optimization is further improved with a prepossessing step that normalizes the reference moments according to the axes of the reference ellipsoid. Using this approach, the non-linear least-squares solver reliably converges to a near-global minimum from a single initial guess. We demonstrate accuracy and robustness using single-cell and multi-cell examples over a wide spectrum of geometry. In particular, we demonstrate our ability to exactly reproduce several important and complex features defined by up to four half-spaces, such as corners, filaments, filament tips, and embedded material in the cell.

Structural and electronic characteristics of amorphous Ge 8 Sb 2 Te 11

GeTe-rich phase-change materials can be utilized in rewriteable optical memory due to the large contrast in reflectivity between amorphous and crystalline phases. Here we explored the structure and electronic properties of amorphous Ge 8 Sb 2 Te 11 using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that amorphous Ge 8 Sb 2 Te 11 is dominantly composed of Ge-, Sb- and Te-centered octahedrons with distortions, while 30.4 % of Ge-centered clusters are in the form of tetrahedrons which are randomly distributed. The 5-fold rings possess a large proportion, and the Gesingle bondTe and Sbsingle bondTe bonds present larger formation energies than other bonds, leading to the ABAB bonding sequence (A: Ge and Sb, B: Te). The lone pair electrons locating at the opposite direction of bonds possess a large fraction of 14.8 %, which may enhance the distortions of local clusters. Importantly, these structural properties lead to the high stability of amorphous Ge 8 Sb 2 Te 11 and thus long data retention in the information storage.

Magnetic oxygen in transition metal oxides: A case study of Ba 2 CoO 4

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit exotic magnetic properties in both naturally formed and artificially structured materials, often difficult to understand in conventional wisdom. Magnetic insulator Ba 2 CoO 4 has mystified the community, because the CoO 4 tetrahedron is completely isolated with the nearest Co atoms far apart (~5 Å), making it impossible to account for long-range magnetic ordering seen experimentally using only Co. By theoretically investigating magnetism and relating our findings to experimental observations in bulk Ba 2 CoO 4 , we illustrate for the first time that the magnetic moment on oxygen atoms are the origin of the unexpected long-range magnetic ordering and low magnetic dimensionality. We find that the magnetic moment is not only localized on Co atoms, as assumed in all conventional data analysis, but also distributed on its tetrahedrally-coordinated O atoms. The total magnetic moment of the CoO 4 building block is 4.63μ B with the magnetic moment on Co being only 3.08μ B . Therefore, the magnetic building block is CoO 4 not Co. Furthermore, our first principles calculations are capable of explaining the origin of the unique magnetic response, including the presence of long-range magnetic ordering with two-dimensional character, and a one-dimensional magnetoelastic behavior. Having oxygen contribute to the magnetic moment will undoubtedly be identified as a universal property of magnetic TMOs, which will require a fresh look at conventional models of magnetism in TMOs.

Homologous Alkali Metal Copper Rare-Earth Chalcogenides A 2 Cu 2 n Ln 4 Q 7+ n ( n = 1, 2, 3)

Twenty-seven new members of the A 2 Cu 2n Ln 4 Q 7+n (A = Cs, Rb; Ln = La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Yb; Q = S, Se) homologous series were synthesized in one of three structural types (indicated by n = 1, 2, 3). All the compounds contained 3D frameworks with alkali-metal-containing tunnels. For each increment in n, one Cu 2 Q was added, which was incorporated into the framework as an edge-sharing tetrahedron by replacing a square planar chalcogenide site. High-throughput DFT calculations predicted many of the phases to be thermodynamically stable. These predictions were compared with the synthesis results for the phases formed in each composition space. In the syntheses, heavier lanthanides showed a preference to start forming the n = 3 ACu 3 Ln 2 Q 5 , which is consistent with the predictions. RbCuNd 2 Se 4 and RbCuTb 2 Se 4 were found to be thermally stable under vacuum at temperatures up to 1000 °C. Optical measurements revealed band gaps of 1.55(5) and 1.62(5) eV for CsCuCe 2 Se 4 and RbCuTb 2 Se 4 , respectively, and a work function of 4.83(5) eV for CsCuPr 2 Se 4 . Additionally, some n = 3 ACu 3 Ln 2 Qs compounds exhibit a negative phonon mode because of a copper atom coordination, which may distort to a trigonal planar geometry at sufficiently low temperatures. The dynamic instabilities and the predicted distortion in the copper tetrahedra for the n = 3 ACu 3 Ln 2 Q 5 compounds were found to have a linear relationship with the atomic number of the lanthanides and the electronegativity of the lanthanides. In conclusion, the A 2 Cu 2 n Ln 4 Q 7+n compounds can potentially find application as high-temperature thermoelectric materials and other semiconductors.

Mo 4 FeGa 17.25– x Ge x : Complementary Point Substitutions, Buffering Frameworks, and Merging of the 18-n and Octet Bonding Schemes

We present the discovery of Mo 4 FeGa 17.25–x Ge x (x ∼ 2.1(4), based on determination of Ge content), a complex gallide featuring a variety of point substitution phenomena. Its crystal structure is derived from the Ti 2 Ni type, in which a diamond network of face-sharing octahedra is interpenetrated by a second diamond network of vertex-sharing stella quadrangula. However, while in the ideal Ti 2 Ni type these two frameworks run uninterrupted through the crystal, Mo 4 FeGa 17.25–x Ge x shows three variations. First, the inner tetrahedron of every other stella quadrangula is replaced with a main group atom, creating tetrahedra reminiscent of the Zintl phase NaTl. Next, a selection of Ga 6 octahedra are filled with Fe atoms, in a manner analogous to the stuffed AuCu 3 -type phases. Finally, the refined crystal structure shows that in each unit cell a single Ga2 atom in the octahedral network is substituted with a dumbbell of Ga/Ge atoms. Electronic structure calculations on ordered models of Mo 4 FeGa 17.25–x Ge x reveal a narrow band near the Fermi energy, which is explained in terms of the 18-n and octet bonding schemes using reversed approximation Molecular Orbital analysis. A DFT-chemical pressure analysis connects the tetrahedron/atom and atom/dumbbell substitutions to the relief of atomic packing tensions and highlights soft atomic motions within the octahedral framework and driving forces for atom/dumbbell substitution. The combination of soft vibrational modes, disorder, and a narrow band gap could make this phase of interest for potential thermoelectric properties.

Solvent-Driven Transformation of Zn/Cd 2+ -Deoxycholate Assemblies

Deoxycholic acid (DOC) is a unique, biologically derived surfactant with facial amphiphilicity that has been exploited, albeit minimally, in supramolecular assembly of materials. Here, we present the synthesis and structural characterization of three hybrid metal (Zn 2+ and Cd 2+ )-DOC compounds. Analysis by single-crystal Xray diffraction reveals the many interactions that are possible between these facial surfactants and the influence of solvent molecules that drive the assembly of materials. These structures are the first metal- DOC complexes besides those obtained from alkali and alkaline earth metals. We isolated polymeric chains of both Cd and Zn (Zn poly -DOC and Cd poly -DOC) from water. Major interactions between DOC molecules in these phases are hydrophobic in nature. Cd poly -DOC exhibits unique P1 symmetry, with complete interdigitation of the amphiphiles between neighboring polymeric chains. Zn 4 -DOC, obtained from methanol dissolution of Zn poly -DOC, features the OZn 4 tetrahedron, widely known in basic zinc acetate and MOF-5 (metal organic framework). We document a solvent-driven, roomtemperature transition between Zn poly -DOC and Zn 4 -DOC (in both directions) by scanning and transmission electron microscopies in addition to small-angle X-ray scattering, powder X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy. These studies show the methanoldriven transition of Zn poly -DOC to Zn 4 -DOC occurs via an intermediate with no long-range order of the Zn 4 clusters, indicating the strongest interactions driving assembly are intramolecular. On the contrary, water-driven solid-to-solid transformation from Zn 4 -DOC to Zn poly -DOC exhibits crystal-to-crystal transformation. Zn poly -DOC is robust, easy to synthesize, and comprised of biologically benign components, so we demonstrate dye absorption as a proxy for water treatment applications. It favors absorption of positively charged dyes. These studies advance molecular level knowledge of the supramolecular assembly of facial surfactants that can be exploited in the design of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. This research also highlights the potential of solvent for tuning supramolecular assembly processes, leading to new hybrid materials featuring facial surfactants.

Suppression of Superconductivity and Nematic Order in Fe 1–y Se 1–x S x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1; y ≤ 0.1) Crystals by Anion Height Disorder

Connections between crystal chemistry and critical temperature T c have been in the focus of superconductivity, one of the most widely studied phenomena in physics, chemistry and materials science alike. In most Fe-based superconductors materials chemistry and physics conspire so that T c correlates with the average anion height above the Fe plane, i.e. with the geometry of the FeAs 4 or FeCh 4 (Ch = Te, Se, S) tetrahedron. Here, by synthesizing Fe 1-y Se 1-x S x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1, y ≤ 0.1) we find that in alloyed crystals T c is not correlated with the anion height as most other Fe superconductors. Instead, changes in T c (x) and tetragonal-to-orthorombic (nematic) transition T s (x) on cooling are correlated with disorder in Fe vibrations in direction orthogonal to Fe planes, along the crystallographic c-axis. The disorder stems from the random nature of S substitution, causing deformed Fe(Se,S) 4 tetrahedra with different Fe-Se and Fe-S bond distances. Our results provide evidence of T c and T s suppression by disorder in anion height. The connection to local crystal chemistry may be exploited in computational prediction of new superconducting materials with FeSe/S building blocks.

Vibrational Signatures of Unrealized Phosphorus Suboxide Intermediates in White Phosphorus Oxidation Reactions

White phosphorus ignition notoriously produces the phosphoric acid anhydride P 4 O 10 , yet the intermediate oxidation steps remain undetermined. Here, we report the first geometric and vibrational characterization of two P 4 O 2 isomers, P 3 OPO and P 3 PO 2 , and substantiate a previously proposed cyclic P 4 O 2 isomer. We formally assign the infrared bands observed by Andrews and Mielke at 898 and 891 cm −1 to the antisymmetric P− O−P vibrations of P 3 OPO species. Additional bands corresponding to terminal P=O and −PO 2 stretches of P 3 OPO and P 3 PO 2 discussed herein also went unrecognized due to the peculiar bonding of P 4 O 2 species compared to oxo-bridged P 4 O x (x = 3−6) species. Sequential addition of oxygen atoms to the P 4 tetrahedron appears to form P 3 OPO and P 3 PO 2 , while cyclic P 4 O 2 is formed from P 2 O dimerization. CCSD(T) geometries, CCSD(T) + MP2[δVPT2] fundamental frequencies, and enthalpies of formation extrapolated using focal-point analysis are reported. The predicted enthalpies of formation relative to tetrahedral P 4 plus 3 Σ g − O 2 for bent-P 3 OPO, extended-P 3 OPO, P 3 PO 2 , and cyclic-P 4 O 2 are −93, −88, −85, and −63 kcal mol −1 , respectively.

Efficient Modeling of Structural, Electronic, and Optical Properties of Silver and Gold Metal Nanoclusters and Alloys Using Optimized SCC-DFTB Parameters

Computation of optical properties using conventional time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) is time-consuming and memory-intensive. In this study, we investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the density functional tight binding (DFTB) framework with newly optimized Slater–Koster (SK) parameters for modeling the structural, electronic properties, and absorption spectra of silver and gold nanoclusters and their alloys. Our investigation of the ground state (GS) properties demonstrates that the newly developed GS-SK parameters enable DFTB to closely approximate DFT-calculated bond lengths for octahedron, tetrahedron, icosahedra, and truncated octahedron with sizes Ag n /Au n (n = 19, 20, 38, 55), nanoclusters and Ag 20 /Au 20 nanoalloys, with a maximum deviation of approximately 0.15 Å. Formation energy results indicate that the GS-SK parameters can closely estimate changes in formation energies with alloy composition, and the comparison of electronic structures for Ag 20 , Au 20 , and AgAu alloy nanoclusters using the DFTB approximation reveals good agreement in the projected density of states (DOS) profiles and energy levels. A second set of SK parameters, ES-SK, has been developed to describe excited state (ES) properties, including the absorption spectra of silver octahedron Ag 19 , tetrahedral Ag n (n = 20, 56, 84), truncated octahedron Ag 38 , and icosahedra Ag 55 closed-shell clusters and their gold and alloy counterparts over a broad range of alloy compositions. This parametrization uses TD-DFTB calculations and fine-tunes the d and p eigenvalues by comparing them to reference absorption spectra from first-principles TD-DFT. This enables the generation of absorption spectra that closely match the reference spectra when plasmon excitation is dominant, as demonstrated by studying the plasmonic properties of icosahedral Ag n and Au n (n = 309 and 561) nanoparticles. This includes the rapid loss in plasmon quality when Au partially replaces Ag in alloy clusters. Furthermore, these results provide a foundation for addressing computational bottlenecks in plasmonics and with new prospects for applications in the quantum plasmonics for bimetallic alloys.

Diffusion-Limited Kinetics of Isovalent Cation Exchange in III–V Nanocrystals Dispersed in Molten Salt Reaction Media

The goal of this work is to determine the kinetic factors that govern isovalent cation exchange in III–V colloidal quantum dots using molten salts as the solvent and cation source. We focus on the reactions of InP + GaI 3 → In 1 – x Ga x P and InAs + GaI 3 → In 1–x Ga x As to create technologically important ternary III–V phases. We find that the molten salt reaction medium causes the transformation of nearly spherical InP nanocrystals to tetrahedron-shaped In 1–x Ga x P nanocrystals. Furthermore, we determine that the activation energy for the cation exchange reaction is 0.9 eV for incorporation of Ga into InP and 1.2 eV for incorporation of Ga into InAs, both much lower than the measured values in bulk semiconductors. Next, we use powder XRD simulations to constrain our understanding of the structure of the In 1–x Ga x P nanocrystals. Together our results reveal several important features of molten salt-mediated cation exchange and provide guidance for future development of these materials.

Magnetoelectric Coupling in a Mn 4 Na–Organic Complex under Pulsed Magnetic Fields up to 73 T

Research on the magnetoelectric (ME) effect (or spin-electric coupling) in molecule-based magnetic materials is a relatively nascent but promising topic. Molecule-based magnetic materials have diverse magnetic functionalities that can be coupled to electrical properties. Here, in this study, we investigate a realization of ME coupling that is fundamental but not heavily studied─the coupling of magnetic spin level crossings to changes in electric polarization. A mixed-valence Mn 4 Na complex with a total ground-state spin S = 5/2 under zero magnetic field and S = 17/2 under high magnetic field undergoes a cascade of ground-state level crossings of the S z states with increasing magnetic field. Magnetization and electrical polarization measurements under pulsed magnetic fields up to 73 T show that each spin level crossing is accompanied by a significant change in electric polarization that is an even function of the applied magnetic field. A molecular Hamiltonian describing antiferromagnetic exchange in a distorted tetrahedron of three Mn III and one Mn II ions matches the data well. We conclude that the ME coupling is caused by magnetostriction within the polar molecule as it distorts to lower its magnetic exchange energy.

Atomic-scale probing of short-range order and its impact on electrochemical properties in cation-disordered oxide cathodes

Abstract Chemical short-range-order has been widely noticed to dictate the electrochemical properties of Li-excess cation-disordered rocksalt oxides, a class of cathode based on earth abundant elements for next-generation high-energy-density batteries. Existence of short-range-order is normally evidenced by a diffused intensity pattern in reciprocal space, however, derivation of local atomic arrangements of short-range-order in real space is hardly possible. Here, by a combination of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and cluster-expansion Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal the short-range-order is a convolution of three basic types: tetrahedron, octahedron, and cube. We discover that short-range-order directly correlates with Li percolation channels, which correspondingly affects Li transport behavior. We further demonstrate that short-range-order can be effectively manipulated by anion doping or post-synthesis thermal treatment, creating new avenues for tailoring the electrochemical properties. Our results provide fundamental insights for decoding the complex relationship between local chemical ordering and properties of crystalline compounds.

Octo-diamond crystal of nanoscale tetrahedra with interchanging chiral motifs

Despite their simplicity, tetrahedra can assemble into diverse high- and low-density structures. Here we report a low-density ‘octo-diamond’ structure formed by nanoscale solid tetrahedra with a 64-tetrahedron unit cell containing 8 cubic-diamond subcells. The formed crystal is achiral, but is composed of chiral bilayers with alternating handedness. The left- and right-handed chirality of the bilayers, combined with the plasmonic nature of the gold tetrahedra, produces chiroptical responses at the crystal surface. We uncover that the hydrophobic substrate facilitates the arrangement of tetrahedra into irregular ring-like patterns, creating a critical, uneven topography to stabilize the observed octo-diamond structure. This study reveals a potent way to affect colloidal crystallization through particle–substrate interactions, expanding the nanoparticle self-assembly toolbox.

A quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles on the pyrochlore lattice

Spin liquids are highly correlated yet disordered states formed by the entanglement of magnetic dipoles. Theories define such states using gauge fields and deconfined quasiparticle excitations that emerge from a local constraint governing the ground state of a frustrated magnet. For example, the ‘2-in–2-out’ ice rule for dipole moments on a tetrahedron can lead to a quantum spin ice in rare-earth pyrochlores. However, $f$-electron ions often carry multipole degrees of freedom of higher rank than dipoles, leading to intriguing behaviours and ‘hidden’ orders. In this paper we show that the correlated ground state of a Ce 3+ -based pyrochlore, Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 , is a quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles. Our neutron scattering results are consistent with a fluid-like state where degrees of freedom have a more complex magnetization density than that of magnetic dipoles. The nature and strength of the octupole–octupole couplings, together with the existence of a continuum of excitations attributed to spinons, provides further evidence for a quantum ice of octupoles governed by a ‘2-plus–2-minus’ rule. Our work identifies Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 as a unique example of frustrated multipoles forming a ‘hidden’ topological order, thus generalizing observations on quantum spin liquids to multipolar phases that can support novel types of emergent fields and excitations.

Lipid vesicles induced ordered nanoassemblies of Janus nanoparticles

Since many advanced applications require specific assemblies of nanoparticles (NPs), considerable efforts have been made to fabricate nanoassemblies with specific geometries. Although nanoassemblies can be fabricated through top-down approaches, recent advances show that intricate nanoassemblies can also be obtained through self-assembly, mediated for example by DNA strands. Here, we show, through extensive molecular dynamics simulations, that highly ordered self-assemblies of NPs can be mediated by their adhesion to lipid vesicles (LVs). Specifically, Janus NPs are considered so that the amount by which they are wrapped by the LV is controlled. The specific geometry of the nanoassembly is the result of effective curvature-mediated repulsion between the NPs and the number of NPs adhering to the LV. Further, the NPs are arranged on the LV into polyhedra which satisfy the upper limit of Euler's polyhedral formula, including several deltahedra and three Platonic solids, corresponding to the tetrahedron, octahedron, and icosahedron.

Unveiling the structure and electronic characteristics of amorphous GeS for high performance threshold switching

Ovonic threshold switching selectors are widely studied owing to the essential application in high density phase-change memory. Amorphous GeS is proposed as a potential candidate for the excellent performance. However, the knowledge of amorphous GeS is still insufficient up to date. Here, we have studied the structure and electronic characteristics of GeS in the amorphization process, by using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the amorphous GeS is mainly made up of Ge–S bonds. The Ge- and S-centered clusters are dominantly in the form of octahedral structures in liquid GeS. Furthermore, during the amorphization process, most of Ge-centered clusters become highly coordinated octahedrons while a small number of Ge-centered clusters change to tetrahedrons, and the S-centered clusters deviate from the octahedral structure gradually. In addition, the large bandgap and the relatively small mid-gap states in amorphous GeS lead to a high switching voltage.
