Synthesis of novel electrically conducting polymers: Potential conducting Langmuir-Blodgett films and conducting polymers on defined surfaces

Based on previous results involving thiophene derived electrically conducting polymers in which it was shown that thiophene, 3-substituted thiophenes, furans, and certain oligomers of these compounds showed electrical conductivity after polymerization. The conductivity was in the order of up to 500 S/cm. In addition, these polymers showed conductivity without being doped and most of all they were practically inert toward ambient conditions. They even could be used in aqueous media. With these findings as a guide, a number of 3-long-chain-substituted thiophenes and 1-substituted-3-long-chain substituted pyrrols were synthesized as monomers for potential polymeric electrically conducting Langmuir-Blodgett films.

Effect of Molecular Weight on the Morphology of a Polymer Semiconductor–Thermoplastic Elastomer Blend

Abstract Polymer semiconductors (PSCs) are essential active materials in mechanically stretchable electronic devices. However, many exhibit low fracture strain due to their rigid chain conformation and the presence of large crystalline domains. Here, a PSC/elastomer blend, poly[((2,6‐bis(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐3,7‐bis(9‐octylnonadecyl)thieno[3,2‐b]thieno[2′,3′:4,5]thieno[2,3‐d]thiophene)‐5,5′‐diyl)(2,5‐bis(8‐octyloctadecyl)‐3,6‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)pyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4‐dione)‐5,5′‐diyl]] (P2TDPP2TFT4) and polystyrene‐ block ‐poly(ethylene‐ran‐butylene)‐ block ‐polystyrene (SEBS) are systematically investigated. Specifically, the effects of molecular weight of both SEBS and P2TDPP2TFT4 on the resulting blend morphology, mechanical, and electrical properties are explored. In addition to commonly used techniques, atomic force microscopy‐based nanomechanical images are used to provide additional insights into the blend film morphology. Opposing trends in SEBS‐induced aggregation are observed for the different P2TDPP2TFT4 molecular weights upon increasing the SEBS molecular weight from 87 to 276 kDa. Furthermore, these trends are seen in device performance trends for both molecular weights of P2TDPP2TFT4. SEBS molecular weight also has a substantial influence on the mesoscale phase separation. Strain at fracture increases dramatically upon blending, reaching a maximum value of 640% ± 20% in the blended films measured with film‐on‐water method. These results highlight the importance of molecular weight for electronic devices. In addition, this study provides valuable insights into appropriate polymer selections for stretchable semiconducting thin films that simultaneously possess excellent mechanical and electrical properties.

Optimized Incorporation of Furan into Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based Conjugated Polymers for Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Flexible electronics have received considerable attention in the past decades due to their promising application in rollable display screens, wearable devices, implantable devices, and other electronic applications. Here, in particular, conjugated polymers are favored for flexible electronics due to their mechanical flexibility and potential for solution-processed fabrication techniques, such as blade-coating, roll-to-roll printing, and high-throughput printing allowing for high-performance transistor devices. Thiophene is the prevailing conjugated unit to construct these conjugated polymers due to its favorable electronic properties. On the other hand, furans are among the few conjugated moieties that are easily derived from bio renewable resources. To promote sustainability, we selectively introduced furan into the conjugated backbone of a high-mobility polymer scaffold and systematically studied the effect on the microstructure and charge transport. We show that partially and selectively replacing thiophene units with furan can yield nearly comparable performance compared to the all-thiophene polymer. This strategy offers an improvement in the sustainability of the polymer by incorporating bio-sourced furan without sacrificing the high-performance characteristics. Meanwhile, polymers with incorrect or complete furan incorporation show reduced mobilities. This work serves to develop coherent structure–morphology–performance relationships; such knowledge will establish guidelines for the future development of sustainable, furan-based conjugated materials.

Benzimidazolone-Dioxazine Pigments-Based Conjugated Polymers for Organic Field-Effect Transistor

Molecules based on benzimidazolone-dioxazine are known as blue/violet pigments and have been commercialized for decades. However, unfavorable solubility limits the application of these structures as building blocks of conjugated polymers despite their low band gaps. Herein, a series of donor–acceptor conjugated polymers containing soluble benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures as the acceptors and oligothiophene as donors are synthesized and investigated. With increasing numbers of thiophene rings, the steric hindrance diminishes and high molecular weight polymers can be achieved, leading to an improved performance in organic field effect transistor devices. The hole mobility of polymers with three to six thiophene units is in the order of 10 -1 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Among all the polymers, polymer P3 with three thiophene units between benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures shows the best hole mobility of 0.4 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering results reveal that the high mobility of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) can be accredited by matched donor–acceptor packing in the solid thin films.

Lowly Fused Non-Fullerene Acceptors Towards Efficient Organic Solar Cells Enabled by Isomerization

Here two lowly fused non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with isomeric structures, named as BTP-out-4F and BTP-in-4F, were developed by tailoring the fused 7-ring central core of Y6 into a lowly fused 5-ring linked with two octyloxythiophene bridges. BTP-out-4F with octyloxy side chains away from the central core exhibited large steric hindrance that restrained the rotational freedom between the thiophene bridge and end group but maintained free rotation between the central core and the thiophene bridge. In contrast, BTP-in-4F with octyloxy side chains close to the central core had much lower rotation freedom due to the non-covalent S … O interactions locked the central core, thiophene bridge and end group simultaneously, making BTP-in-4F have higher molecular crystallinity. On the other hand, the optical properties, energy levels and the blend morphology properties were significantly influenced, leading to distinctive photovoltaic performances. BTP-out-4F formed favorable energy level alignment and morphology when matching with PBDB-T donor, thus its device realized a much higher PCE of 13.32%, which was over 13 times than that of BTP-in-4F based device (PCE=0.97%).

Polyethylene Glycol Surface Modification and Polythiophene Side-Chain Chemistry: A Combined Strategy toward High-Capacity Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

In the development of high-capacity lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the combined optimization of active material interfaces and polymer binder chemistry plays a critical role in improving electrode performance and longevity. This work explores a dual design strategy incorporating polyethylene glycol (PEG) surface modification and carboxylated polythiophene side-chain tailoring to enhance the electrochemical behavior of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 )-based anodes. PEG is employed to improve interfacial stability, while carboxylated polythiophene binders with varying alkyl side-chain lengths─poly[3-(potassium-4-butanoate)thiophene-2,5-diyl] (P3KBT), poly[3-(potassium-5-pentanoate)thiophene-2,5-diyl] (P3KPT), and poly[3-(potassium-6-hexanoate)thiophene-2,5-diyl] (P3KHT)─are used to modulate molecular interactions and ion transport. Among these three analogs, the PEG–Fe 3 O 4 –P3KHT electrode exhibits superior ion-transfer kinetics, the highest capacity retention, and the lowest charge-transfer resistance after extended cycling. Compared to their non-PEG analogs, PEG-coated electrodes demonstrate enhanced structural integrity and electrochemical behavior, emphasizing the synergistic effects of surface modification and side-chain chemistry. These findings highlight the importance of interfacial interactions and molecular design in achieving robust and high-performance composite anodes for next-generation LIBs.

Influence of Surface and Structural Variations in Donor–Acceptor–Donor Sensitizers on Photoelectrocatalytic Water Splitting

Conjugated organic chromophores composed of linked donor (D) and acceptor (A) moieties have attracted considerable attention for photoelectrochemical applications. In this work, we compare the optoelectronic properties and photoelectrochemical performance of two D–A–D structural isomers with thiophene-X-carboxylic acid (X denotes 3 and 2 positions) derivatives and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole as the D and A moieties, respectively. 5,5′-(Benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)bis(thiophene-3-carboxylic acid), BTD1, and 5,5′-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)bis(thiophene-2-carboxylic acid), BTD2, were employed in the study to understand how structural isomers affect surface attachments within chromophore–catalyst assemblies and their influence on charge-transfer dynamics. Crystal structures revealed that varying the position of the −COOH anchoring group causes the molecules to either contort out of a plane (BTD1) or adopt a near-perfect planar conformation (BTD2). BTD1 and BTD2 were co-loaded with either a water oxidation catalyst, [Ru(2,6-bis(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine)-(4,4′-((HO) 2 OPCH 2 )2-2,2′-bipyridine)(OH 2 )] 2 , RuCt 2+ , or proton reduction catalyst [Ni(P 2 Ph N 2 C 6 H 4 CH 2 PO 3 H 2 ) 2 ] 2+ , NiCt 2+ , on oxide electrodes to facilitate photodriven water splitting reactions. Emission quenching measurements indicate that both BTD1 and BTD2 inject electrons into n-type SnO 2 |TiO 2 electrodes and holes into p-type NiO semiconductors from their respective excited states at high efficiencies >60%. Photocurrent densities of chromophore–catalyst assemblies obtained using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) show that BTD2-sensitized photoanodes generate significantly more photocurrent than BTD1-sensitized electrodes; however, both exhibit similar performances at the photocathode. Photoelectrocatyltic measurements demonstrate that both BTD1 and BTD2 performed similarly, generating Faradaic efficiencies of 39 and 38% at the anode or 61 and 79% at the cathode. Transient absorption measurements suggest that the differences between the LSV and photoelectrocatalytic measurements result from the differences in quantum yields of the photogenerated redox equivalents, which is also a reflection of the varying metal oxide surface conformation. Our findings suggest that BTD2 should be investigated further in photocathodic studies since it has the structural advantage of being incorporated into diverse types of chromophore–catalyst assemblies.

Substituent effect on napthodithiophene-fused porphyrins: Understanding the unusual trend of fluorescence quantum yield quenching

A series of π-extended porphyrins containing thiophene units was prepared to investigate an unusual trend observed in the fluorescence quantum yield of naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-fused porphyrins. Monobenzoporphyrins carrying 2-thiophenyl (vinyl thiophene porphyrin) groups (2VTP, 2VTBr and Br2VTP) (numbering 2 and 3 refers to the position of sulfur on the thiophene ring) were synthesized through a Heck-based cascade reaction followed by a newly developed bromination method. These were converted to naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-fused porphyrin derivatives (FBr2VTP and F2VTBr) via ring closure with an intramolecular Scholl reaction. Increasingly larger Stokes shifts with a higher number of bromo groups were observed in the unfused π-extended molecular systems, reflecting the heavy atom effect. Fluorescence spectroscopy further confirmed the unusual trend seen in the previous work: structural rigidification in naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-fused porphyrins leads to longer fluorescence lifetimes but unexpectedly lowers the quantum yield. Adding one bromo group to the naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene unit does not change this trend. Furthermore, the presence of two bromo groups prevents the quantum yield from dropping. DFT, TDDFT, and NICS analyses suggest a drastic change in aromaticity in the pyrrole ring where the naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene is fused in FBr2VTP, which might contribute to the quantum yield reductions.

Chiral Recognition: A Spin-Driven Process in Chiral Oligothiophene. A Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) Effect Manifestation

In this paper it is experimentally demonstrated that the electron-spin/molecular-handedness interaction plays a fundamental role in the chiral recognition process. This conclusion is inferred comparing current versus potential (I-V) curves recorded using chiral electrode surfaces, which are obtained via chemisorption of an enantiopure thiophene derivative: 3,3'-bibenzothiophene core functionalized with 2,2'-bithiophene wings (BT 2 T 4 ). The chiral recognition capability of these chiral-electrodes is probed via cyclic voltammetry measurements, where, Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) capped with enantiopure (BT 2 T 4 ) (BT 2 T 4 )@AgNP) are used as the chiral redox probe. Then, the interface handedness is explored by recording spin-polarized (I-V) curves in spin-dependent electrochemistry (SDE) and magnetic-conductive atomic force microscopy (mc-AFM) experiments. The quality of the interfaces is thoroughly cross-checked using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, Raman, electrodesorption measurements, which further substantiate the metal(electrode)-sulfur(thiophene) central role in the chemisorption process. Spin-polarization values of about 15% and 30% are obtained in the case of SDE and mc-AFM experiments, respectively.

Half‐Fused Diketopyrrolopyrrole‐Based Conjugated Donor–Acceptor Polymer for Ambipolar Field‐Effect Transistors

Abstract A novel building block, denoted as half‐fused diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) (9‐(3‐octadecylhenicosyl)‐8‐(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐7 H ‐pyrrolo[3,4‐ a ]thieno[3,2‐ g ]indolizine‐7,10(9 H )‐dione), in which one of the flanking thiophene units is fused to one of the DPP rings via a carbon‐carbon double bond at the N‐position is reported. The half‐fused DPP is successfully utilized as an electron acceptor to prepare the conjugated donor–acceptor polymer PTFDFT , which exhibits ambipolar semiconducting behavior in ambient air. Theoretical calculations and absorption spectral studies show that the backbone of PTFDFT is more planar compared to the reference polymer with conventional DPP units. As a result, PTFDFT shows a narrow bandgap and low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. The more planar backbone with fewer side chains favors the dense packing of the polymer chains of PTFDFT with a short π–π stacking distance (3.49 Å). Grazing‐incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering data further confirm the predominant edge‐on packing mode of the PTFDFT polymer chains on the substrate. As expected, the PTFDFT thin film shows excellent ambipolar semiconducting properties under ambient conditions, reaching 2.23 and 1.08 cm 2 V −1 s −1 for the n‐ and p‐channels, respectively. In addition, complementary‐like inverter with gain value as high as 141 is successfully constructed using the PTFDFT thin film.

Metal–Ligand Based Mechanophores Enhance Both Mechanical Robustness and Electronic Performance of Polymer Semiconductors

The backbone of diketopyrrolopyrrole-thiophene-vinylene-thiophene-based polymer semiconductors (PSCs) is modified with pyridine (Py) or bipyridine ligands to complex Fe(II) metal centers, allowing the metal–ligand complexes to act as mechanophores and dynamically crosslink the polymer chains. Here, mono- and bi-dentate ligands are observed to exhibit different degrees of bond strengths, which subsequently affect the mechanical properties of these Wolf-type-II metallopolymers. The counter ion also plays a crucial role, as it is observed that Py-Fe mechanophores with non-coordinating BPh 4 – counter ions (Py-FeB) exhibit better thin film ductility with lower elastic modulus, as compared to the coordinating chloro ligands (Py-FeC). Interestingly, besides mechanical robustness, the electrical charge carrier mobility can also be enhanced concurrently when incorporating Py-FeB mechanophores in PSCs. This is a unique observation among stretchable PSCs, especially that most reports to date describe a decreased mobility when the stretchability is improved. Next, it is determined that improvements to both mobility and stretchability are correlated to the solid-state molecular ordering and dynamics of coordination bonds under strain, as elucidated via techniques of grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques, respectively. This study provides a viable approach to enhance both the mechanical and the electronic performance of polymer-based soft devices.

Ion Exchange Gels Allow Organic Electrochemical Transistor Operation with Hydrophobic Polymers in Aqueous Solution

Conjugated-polymer-based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are being studied for applications ranging from biochemical sensing to neural interfaces. While new polymers that interface digital electronics with the aqueous chemistry of life are being developed, the majority of high-performance organic transistor materials are poor at transporting biologically relevant ions. Here, the operating mode of an organic transistor is changed from that of an electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistor (EGOFET) to that of an OECT by incorporating an ion exchange gel between the active layer and the aqueous electrolyte. This device works by taking up biologically relevant ions from solution and injecting more hydrophobic ions into the active layer. Using poly[2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl) thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] as the active layer and a blend of an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) as the ion exchange gel, four orders of magnitude improvement in device transconductance and a 100-fold increase in kinetics are demonstrated. The ability of the ion-exchange-gel OECT to record biological signals by measuring the action potentials of a Venus flytrap is demonstrated. These results show the possibility of using interface engineering to open up a wider palette of organic semiconductors as OECTs that can be gated by aqueous solutions.

Critical Role of Polymer Aggregation and Miscibility in Nonfullerene‐Based Organic Photovoltaics

Abstract Understanding the correlation between polymer aggregation, miscibility, and device performance is important to establish a set of chemistry design rules for donor polymers with nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs). Employing a donor polymer with strong temperature‐dependent aggregation, namely PffBT4T‐2OD [poly[(5,6‐difluoro‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazol‐4,7‐diyl)‐ alt ‐(3,3″′‐di(2‐octyldodecyl)‐2,2′;5′,2″;5″,2″′‐quaterthiophen‐5,5‐diyl)], also known as PCE‐11 as a base polymer, five copolymer derivatives having a different thiophene linker composition are blended with the common NFA O‐IDTBR to investigate their photovoltaic performance. While the donor polymers have similar optoelectronic properties, it is found that the device power conversion efficiency changes drastically from 1.8% to 8.7% as a function of thiophene content in the donor polymer. Results of structural characterization show that polymer aggregation and miscibility with O‐IDTBR are a strong function of the chemical composition, leading to different donor–acceptor blend morphology. Polymers having a strong tendency to aggregate are found to undergo fast aggregation prior to liquid–liquid phase separation and have a higher miscibility with NFA. These properties result in smaller mixed donor–acceptor domains, stronger PL quenching, and more efficient exciton dissociation in the resulting cells. This work indicates the importance of both polymer aggregation and donor–acceptor interaction on the formation of bulk heterojunctions in polymer:NFA blends.

Heterocyclic Chromophore Amphiphiles and their Supramolecular Polymerization

Abstract Supramolecular polymerization of π‐conjugated amphiphiles in water is an attractive approach to create functional nanostructures. Here, we report on the synthesis, optoelectronic and electrochemical properties, aqueous supramolecular polymerization, and conductivity of polycyclic aromatic dicarboximide amphiphiles. The chemical structure of the model perylene monoimide amphiphile was modified with heterocycles, essentially substituting one fused benzene ring with thiophene, pyridine or pyrrole rings. All the heterocycle‐containing monomers investigated underwent supramolecular polymerization in water. Large changes to the monomeric molecular dipole moments led to nanostructures with low electrical conductivity due to diminished interactions. Although the substitution of benzene with thiophene did not notably change the monomer dipole moment, it led to crystalline nanoribbons with 20‐fold higher electrical conductivity, due to enhanced dispersion interactions as a result of the presence of sulfur atoms.

Unidirectional Sidechain Engineering to Construct Dual‐Asymmetric Acceptors for 19.23 % Efficiency Organic Solar Cells with Low Energy Loss and Efficient Charge Transfer

Abstract Achieving both high open‐circuit voltage ( V oc ) and short‐circuit current density ( J sc ) to boost power‐conversion efficiency (PCE) is a major challenge for organic solar cells (OSCs), wherein high energy loss ( E loss ) and inefficient charge transfer usually take place. Here, three new Y‐series acceptors of mono‐asymmetric asy‐YC11 and dual‐asymmetric bi‐asy‐YC9 and bi‐asy‐YC12 are developed. They share the same asymmetric D 1 AD 2 (D 1 =thieno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene and D 2 =selenopheno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene) fused‐core but have different unidirectional sidechain on D 1 side, allowing fine‐tuned molecular properties, such as intermolecular interaction, packing pattern, and crystallinity. Among the binary blends, the PM6 : bi‐asy‐YC12 one has better morphology with appropriate phase separation and higher order packing than the PM6 : asy‐YC9 and PM6 : bi‐asy‐YC11 ones. Therefore, the PM6 : bi‐asy‐YC12‐based OSCs offer a higher PCE of 17.16 % with both high V oc and J sc , due to the reduced E loss and efficient charge transfer properties. Inspired by the high V oc and strong NIR‐absorption, bi‐asy‐YC12 is introduced into efficient binary PM6 : L8‐BO to construct ternary OSCs. Thanks to the broadened absorption, optimized morphology, and furtherly minimized E loss , the PM6 : L8‐BO : bi‐asy‐YC12‐based OSCs achieve a champion PCE of 19.23 %, which is one of the highest efficiencies among these annealing‐free devices. Our developed unidirectional sidechain engineering for constructing bi‐asymmetric Y‐series acceptors provides an approach to boost PCE of OSCs.

A refined design concept for sulfur-tolerant Pd catalyst supported on zeolite by shape-selective exclusion and hydrogen spillover for hydrogenation of aromatics

Sulfur poisoning of noble metal catalysts has been a major challenge for decades. This work demonstrates the superior sulfur tolerance of a hybrid zeolite-supported Pd catalyst for hydrogenation of tetralin containing benzothiophene. The hybrid catalyst consists of Pd supported on a large-pore acidic zeolite Y (Pd/HY) and a small-pore zeolite A without (Pd/HA) or with surface metal passivation by chemical vapor deposition of SiO 2 (SiO 2 -Pd/HA) and with potassium ion exchange (SiO 2 -Pd/KA). Pd/HY is very active for tetralin hydrogenation but quickly deactivates after exposure to benzothiophene at high concentration of 100 ppm sulfur. The SiO 2 -coated Pd/HA shows no activity for tetralin hydrogenation, but continues to activate H 2 and serve as a source of hydrogen spillover from Pd/HA since these metal sites are protected from thiophenic sulfur due to size-selective exclusion. Adding K ion-exchanged and SiO 2 -coated catalyst SiO 2 -Pd/KA to Pd/HY is even more effective for enhancing sulfur tolerance, both for tetralin hydrogenation and for isomerization of cis-decalin to trans-decalin in the presence of benzothiophene. The turnover frequencies (TOF) of all the catalysts are similar at the exposed sulfur/Pd atomic ratio of around 0.5. With further increase in sulfur/Pd ratio, rapid decline in TOF was observed on Pd/HY, but SiO 2 -Pd/KA + Pd/HY hybrid catalyst shows a significantly higher TOF than that over Pd/HY, even though SiO 2 -Pd/KA or SiO 2 -Pd/HA alone shows no TOF for tetralin hydrogenation. Even after high-dose poisoning at 400 ppm sulfur, the SiO 2 -Pd/KA + Pd/HY hybrid recovered activity more quickly than SiO 2 -Pd/HA + Pd/HY, while the latter in turn is much better than Pd/HY alone. These results point to the higher activity for hydrogen spillover from SiO 2 -Pd/KA where Pd metal sites are protected from not only thiophenic sulfur but also inorganic sulfur H 2 S by shape-selective exclusion. The present work further establishes the validity of shape-selective exclusion and hydrogen spillover in the design concept proposed for a sulfur-tolerant bimodal acidic zeolite-supported metal catalyst for hydrogenation of naphthalene [C.S. Song, Chemtech, 29 (1999) 26–30], and refines the design concept further for limiting the size of small pore in hybrid catalysts to~3 Å for restricting access of H 2 S but allowing entrance of H 2 . Further, this refined design concept is applicable to other supported monometallic and bimetallic catalysts.

A comparative analysis of different van der Waals treatments for molecular adsorption on the basal plane of 2H-MoS 2

The binding energy of hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, ethane, ethylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, pyridine, pyrrole, and thiophene on the basal plane of the semi-conducting 2H-molybdenum sulfide (MoS 2 ) was calculated with the following flavors of Density Functional Theory (DFT): GGA-PW91, PBE-D3, vdW-DF, optPBE, optB86b, optB88, vdW-TS, and BEEF-vdW. The GGA-PW91 binding energies are negligible (<0.07 eV in magnitude) in all cases. The predictions with vdW-DF and PBE-D3 are the closest (error <0.05 eV) to the isosteric heats of adsorption calculated from reported temperature programmed desorption data for thiophene and butadiene. For all dispersion flavors examined here, the magnitude of the dispersion contribution to the binding energy increases linearly with the number of heavy atoms in the adsorbate, with each atom contributing 0.05 eV (BEEF-vdW) – 0.09 eV (optB88-vdW). Further, this implies that the calculated adsorption constants of molecules larger than acridine (i.e., comprising > 14 non-heavy atoms) can vary by more than four orders of magnitude at industrial conditions depending on the chosen method of dispersion correction. Further, dispersion effects fall off rapidly (>0.03 eV/ non-hydrogen atom/Å) as the adsorbate-surface distance increases.
