A note on independent variables for restricted three-body problems.

In studies of the elliptic restricted three-body problem, the true anomaly of the motion of the primaries is often used as the independent variable. The equations of motion then show invariancy in form from the circular case. It is of interest whether other independent variables exist, such that the invariant form of the equations is maintained. It is found that true anomaly is the only such variable.

Subregions of Motion and Elliptic Halo Orbits in the Elliptic Restricted Three-Body Problem

In this paper we present regions of motion and periodic orbits in the spatial elliptic restricted three body problem (ER3BP). Periodic orbits and regions of motion are fundamental keys to understand any dynamical system; for this reason the Hill's surfaces or the families of halo orbits have been extensively studied in the frame of the circular restricted three body problem. It is our opinion that their natural extensions to the ER3BP have not been studied enough. We divide the position space into forbidden subregions, subregions of motion and low-velocity subregions. We use these notions to define necessary condition for a transfer trajectory in the ER3BP. Also we compute branches of elliptic halo orbits bifurcating from halo orbits in the circular restricted three body problem. The new periodic orbits have principal periods and stability properties different from those of the originating halo orbit.

Invariant Manifolds, the Spatial Three-Body Problem and Space Mission Design

The invariant manifold structures of the collinear libration points for the spatial restricted three-body problem provide the framework for understanding complex dynamical phenomena from a geometric point of view. In particular, the stable and unstable invariant manifold 'tubes' associated to libration point orbits are the phase space structures that provide a conduit for orbits between primary bodies for separate three-body systems. These invariant manifold tubes can be used to construct new spacecraft trajectories, such as 'Petit Grand Tour' of the moons of Jupiter. Previous work focused on the planar circular restricted three-body problem. The current work extends the results to the spatial case.

Notes on the restricted three body problem- approximate behavior of solutions near the collinear lagrangian points

Studies the solutions of the restricted three-body problem near those equilibrium points which are collinear with the two positive masses. This is done to gain insight toward the development of an analytic proof and classification of the periodic orbits that pass near these equilibrium points, which have been discovered numerically by M. Davidson, and also to hopefully gain insight into the nature of solutions of the restricted three-body problem in general. The qualitative observations that are made are all deduced from the linearized equations.

Broad Search for Unstable Resonant Orbits in the Planar Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem

Unstable resonant orbits in the circular restricted three-body problem have increasingly been used for trajectory design using optimization and invariant manifold techniques. In this study, several methods for computing these unstable resonant orbits are explored including flyby maps, continuation from two-body models, and grid searches. Families of orbits are computed focusing on the Jupiter-Europa system, and their characteristics are explored. Different parameters such as period and stability are examined for each set of resonantor bits, and the continuation of several specific orbits is explored in more detail.

On the characteristic exponents of the general three-body problem

A description is given of some properties of the characteristic exponents of the general three-body problem. The variational equations on which the analysis is based are obtained by linearizing the Lagrangian equations of motion in the neighborhood of a given known solution. Attention is given to the fundamental matrix of solutions, the characteristic equation, the three trivial solutions of the variational equations of the three-body problem, symmetric periodic orbits, and the half-period properties of symmetric periodic orbits.
