Laboratory study of the spectrum of highly ionized calcium in the 100-250 A range applied to solar flare diagnostics

Calcium was introduced into the TEXT tokamak, and its spectral emission was recorded in the 50-360 A range by an absolutely calibrated grazing incidence spectrometer. These observations of highly ionized species of calcium at known conditions of plasma electron temperature and density allow testing of line brightness ratio predictions based on theoretical values of temperature-dependent electron excitation rates. The confirmation of the expected ratios in Be I-like to O I-like calcium allows more confident use of these ratios as a density diagnostic of remote astrophysical sources such as solar flares.

The magnetohydrodynamics of current sheets

Examples of current sheets are summarized and their formation is described. A universal phenomenon in cosmic plasmas is the creation of sheets off intense current near X-type neutral points (where the magnetic field vanishes). These sheets are important as sites where the magnetic-field energy is converted efficiently into heat and bulk kinetic energy and where particles can be accelerated to high energies. Examples include disruptions in laboratory tokamaks, substorms in the earth's magnetosphere, and flares on the sun. The basic behavior of a one-dimensional sheet is presented, together with an account of the linear tearing-mode instability that can cause the field lines in such a sheet to reconnect. Such reconnection may develop in different ways: it may arise from a spontaneous instability or it may be driven, either from outside by motions or locally by a resistivity enhancement. Various processes are described that may occur during the nonlinear development of tearing, along with the many numerical and laboratory experiments that are aiding our understanding of this intriguing cosmical process.

Recombination-cascade X-ray spectra of highly charged helium-like ions

It is shown that the relative intensity distribution among the X-ray spectral lines of helium-like ions from the n = 2 states produced through recombination processes such as radiative and charge transfer recombination may be given by considering in detail the radiative cascades following recombination. Model calculations are presented with predicted line ratios for Ar XVII and Fe XXV in recombination-dominated noncoronal plasmas. In particular, compared to coronal intensities, the singlet resonance line (w) should be much weaker relative to the triplet intercombination (x, y) and forbidden (z) lines, yielding large values for the ratio G = (x + y + z)/w. Accurate configuration interaction type wave functions are employed to calculate the eigenenergies, transition probabilities, and cascade coefficients. Certain relevant tokamak and astrophysical observations are discussed.

Nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic stability

The computer code developed by Bauer et al. (1978) for the study of the magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and stability of a plasma in toroidal geometry is extended so that the growth rates of instabilities may be estimated more accurately. The original code, which is based on the variational principle of ideal magnetohydrodynamics, is upgraded by the introduction of a nonlinear formula for the growth rate of an unstable mode which acts as a quantitative measure of instability that is important in estimating numerical errors. The revised code has been applied to the determination of the nonlinear saturation, ballooning modes and beta limits for tokamaks, stellarators and torsatrons.

New electromagnetic mode in a non-Maxwellian high-beta plasma

An electromagnetic (EM) mode outside of the electron cyclotron frequency in a dense plasma discharge is reported. The experimental plasma was generated in a weak, uniform magnetic field and natural magnetic fluctuations were monitored and examined for cross correlations. Wave dispersion, propagation direction polarization and the electron velocity distribution were also derived. The fluctuations observed were neither cyclotron harmonic waves nor whistlers and consisted of circularly polarized waves propagating along field lines in 3-6 cm diam flux tubes. The mode was carried away from the cathode by streaming energetic electrons. The results may be pertinent in studies of EM modes in auroral arcs or magnetic fluctuations in tokamaks with runaway electrons.
