Field-tailoring quantum materials via magneto-synthesis: metastable metallic and magnetically suppressed phases in a trimer iridate

We demonstrate that applying modest magnetic fields (< 0.1 T) during high-temperature crystal growth can profoundly alter the structure and ground state of a spin-orbit-coupled, antiferromagnetic trimer lattice. Using BaIrO₃ as a model system, whose ground state is intricately dictated by the trimer lattice, we show that magneto-synthesis , a field-assisted synthesis approach, stabilizes a structurally compressed, metastable metallic and magnetically suppressed phases inaccessible via conventional methods. These effects include a 0.85% reduction in unit cell, 4-order-of-magnitude decrease in resistivity, a 10-fold enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient, and the collapse of long-range magnetic order -- all intrinsic and bulk in origin. First-principles calculations confirm that the field-stabilized structure lies substantially above the ground state in energy, highlighting its metastable character. These large, coherent and correlated changes across multiple bulk properties, unlike those caused by dilute impurities, defects or off-stoichiometry, point to an intrinsic field-induced mechanism. The findings establish magneto-synthesis as a powerful new pathway for accessing non-equilibrium quantum phases in strongly correlated materials.

Trimerized small-molecule acceptors enable high-performance organic solar cells with high open-circuit voltage and prolonged life-time

Although the recent development of Y-series small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) has led to a dramatic increase in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs), the operational stability (device lifetime) of OSCs is inadequate for commercialization. In this study, we develop a new trimer acceptor (TYT), consisting of three Y-based molecules linked by electron-donating spacers, to realize an OSC with high-performance (PCE > 18%) and -stability (t 80% lifetime > 8000 h under 1 sun illumination, in which t 80% lifetime is the time required for the PCE of the OSC to reach 80% of its initial value). We demonstrate that the trimerization approach affords an acceptor, TYT, with an upshifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level, which, in turn, affords an efficient OSC with a high open-circuit voltage (0.964 V). In addition, the glass-transition temperature (T g ) of TYT (217 °C) is significantly higher than those of monomer (MYT, T g = 80 °C) and dimer (DYT, T g = 127 °C) acceptors, which effectively suppresses the molecular diffusion of TYT in a blend film with a polymer donor. Accordingly, a TYT-based OSC demonstrates a high PCE (18.2%) and long t 80% lifetime under 1 sun illumination (8454 h), outperforming MYT- and DYT-based OSCs that exhibit PCEs and t 80% lifetimes of 16.4% and 35 h, and 17.3% and 2551 h, respectively. Therefore, this study provides important guidelines for the design of electron acceptors in achieving OSCs with high performance and stability close to a commercial level.

Molecular orbital symmetry-driven trimer formation in Kagome correlated electron materials

Correlated electron materials with molecular orbital states extending over transition metal clusters can host multiferroicity, spin frustration, and unconventional insulating phases. However, the fundamental criteria that govern cluster formation and stability remain unclear. Here, we identify a symmetry, correlation, and electron-filling-driven criteria that stabilize triangular metal trimers in materials displaying transition metal Kagome patterns. Using density functional theory and chemical bonding analysis, we show that trimer formation emerges when 6–8 electrons occupy molecular orbitals derived from transition metal d-states, achieving near-complete filling of bonding states while avoiding antibonding occupation, and correlations are of intermediate strength. This principle explains the stability of Nb 3 X 8 (X = Cl, Br, I), and more broadly, our findings offer a general design rule to obtain quantum materials with quantum states extended across transition metal clusters.

Emergence of Spinons in Layered Trimer Iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

Spinons are well-known as the elementary excitations of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains, but means to realize spinons in higher dimensions is the subject of intense research. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to study the layered trimer iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 , which shows no magnetic order down to 0.2 K. An emergent one-dimensional spinon continuum is observed that can be well-described by XXZ spin-1/2 chains with magnetic exchange of ~55 meV and a small Ising-like anisotropy. With 2% isovalent Sr doping, magnetic order appears below TN=130 K along with sharper excitations, indicating that the spinons become more confined in (Ba 1-x Sr x ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We propose that the frustrated intra-trimer interactions effectively reduce the system into decoupled spin chains, the subtle balance of which can be easily tipped by perturbations such as chemical doping. Our results put Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 between the one-dimensional chain and two-dimensional quantum spin liquid scenarios, illustrating a new way to suppress magnetic order and realize fractional spinons.

Structure of the rabies virus glycoprotein trimer bound to a prefusion-specific neutralizing antibody

Rabies infection is nearly 100% lethal if untreated and kills more than 50,000 people annually, many of them children. Existing rabies vaccines target the rabies virus glycoprotein (RABV-G) but generate short-lived immune responses, likely because the protein is heterogeneous under physiological conditions. Here, we report the 3.39 Å cryo–electron microscopy structure of trimeric, prefusion RABV-G complexed with RVA122, a potently neutralizing human antibody. RVA122 binds to a quaternary epitope at the top of RABV-G, bridging domains and stabilizing RABV-G protomers in a prefusion state. RABV-G trimerization involves side-to-side interactions between the central α helix and adjacent loops, rather than contacts between central helices, and interactions among the fusion loops at the glycoprotein base. These results provide a basis from which to develop improved rabies vaccines based on RABV-G stabilized in the prefusion conformation.

Antibody recognition of the Pneumovirus fusion protein trimer interface

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a leading cause of viral respiratory infection in children, and can cause severe lower respiratory tract infection in infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised patients. However, there remain no licensed vaccines or specific treatments for hMPV infection. Although the hMPV fusion (F) protein is the sole target of neutralizing antibodies, the immunological properties of hMPV F remain poorly understood. To further define the humoral immune response to the hMPV F protein, we isolated two new human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), MPV458 and MPV465. Both mAbs are neutralizing in vitro and were determined to target a unique antigenic site using competitive biolayer interferometry. We determined both MPV458 and MPV465 have higher affinity for monomeric hMPV F than trimeric hMPV F. MPV458 was co-crystallized with hMPV F, and the mAb primarily interacts with an alpha helix on the F2 region of the hMPV F protein. Surprisingly, the major epitope for MPV458 lies within the trimeric interface of the hMPV F protein, suggesting significant breathing of the hMPV F protein must occur for host immune recognition of the novel epitope. In addition, significant glycan interactions were observed with a somatically mutated light chain framework residue. The data presented identifies a novel epitope on the hMPV F protein for epitope-based vaccine design, and illustrates a new mechanism for human antibody neutralization of viral glycoproteins.

De novo design of a homo-trimeric amantadine-binding protein

The computational design of a symmetric protein homo-oligomer that binds a symmetry-matched small molecule larger than a metal ion has not yet been achieved. We used de novo protein design to create a homo-trimeric protein that binds the C 3 symmetric small molecule drug amantadine with each protein monomer making identical interactions with each face of the small molecule. Solution NMR data show that the protein has regular three-fold symmetry and undergoes localized structural changes upon ligand binding. A high-resolution X-ray structure reveals a close overall match to the design model with the exception of water molecules in the amantadine binding site not included in the Rosetta design calculations, and a neutron structure provides experimental validation of the computationally designed hydrogen-bond networks. Exploration of approaches to generate a small molecule inducible homo-trimerization system based on the design highlight challenges that must be overcome to computationally design such systems.

On 3d bonding in the transition metal trimers - The electronic structure of equilateral triangle Ca3, Sc3, Sc3(+), and Ti3(+)

It is pointed out that transition metals and transition metal (TM) compounds are currently of considerable interest because of their relevance to catalysis and to materials science problems such as hydrogen embrittlement and crack propagation in metals. The present paper is concerned with complete active space Self-Consistent Field (SCF) externally contracted configuration interaction (CASSCF/CCI) calculations for the low-lying states of Sc3 and Sc3(+). A comparison is conducted regarding the bonding in the Ca3, Sc3, and Cu3 molecules. This comparison makes it possible to predict general trends for the TM trimers. Attention is given to the qualitative features of the bonding in the TM trimers, the basis sets and other technical details of the calculations, the calculated results for Sc3 and Sc3(+), and conclusions from this work.

Calculated ground state potential surface and excitation energies for the copper trimer

In the context of their relevance to catalysis and to materials science problems, transition metals and transition metal (TM) compounds are currently of considerable interest, and studies have been conducted of the copper trimer, Cu3. The present investigation is concerned with a study of the ground state surface and several groups of excited states in order to improve the understanding of the spectroscopy of Cu3. Differences of the current study from previous investigations are related to an employment of larger basis sets and a more extensive electron correlation. This was done with the objective to obtain a more accurate definition of the ground state surface. Features of the bonding in the copper dimer are considered to obtain a basis for an understanding of the copper trimer. Attention is given to calculational details, the ground state surface, and calculated vertical excitation energies. The results of SCF/SDCI calculations are reported for portions of the ground surface, for two groups of excited states, and for the ionization potential of Cu3.

Mixed Cu-simple metal dimers and trimers - CuLi, CuLi2, CuNa, CuK, CuBe, CuBe2, Cu2Be, CuAl, and CuAl2

Theoretical studies of selected diatomic and triatomic molecules containing copper and the simple metals Li, Na, K, Be, and Al are presented, with emphasis on elucidating the nature of the bonding in mixed transition metal-simple metal systems. Large Gaussian basis sets are used in the diatomic calculations, and are used to calibrate the triatomic calculations, in which somewhat smaller Gaussian basis sets are employed. Electron correlation is incorporated using both the single-reference singles plus doubles configuration interaction and coupled pair functional methods. It is found that alkali atoms form very polar sigma bonds with copper, and that the ionicity increases with the inclusion of higher excitations because they improve the electron affinity of copper, which in turn allows a larger negative charge on copper. Aluminum is found to form stronger bonds than beryllium, since it does not have to undergo sp hybridization. Some of the trimers bond by forming three-center three-electron bonds. These multicenter bonds are quite strong even when compared to the two-electron bonds in the dimers or to other bonding mechanisms in the trimers.

The reaction between the bromine atom and the water trimer: high level theoretical studies

Three different reaction pathways are found for the reaction of bromine atom (Br) with the lowest-energy structure of the water trimer [uud-(H 2 O) 3 ], initially using the MPW1K-DFT method. The three bromine pathways have closely related geometries and energetics, analogous to those found for the fluorine and chlorine reactions. Here, the lowest-energy pathway of the Br + uud-(H 2 O) 3 reaction was further investigated using the “gold standard” CCSD(T) method and the correlation-consistent basis sets up to cc-pVQZ(-PP). Based on the CCSD(T)/cc-pVQZ(-PP)//CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ(-PP) results, the Br + (H 2 O) 3 reaction is endothermic by 33.3 kcal mol -1 . The classical barrier height is 29.0 kcal mol -1 between the reactants and the exit complex, and there is no barrier for the reverse reaction. The Br···(H 2 O) 3 entrance complex is found to lie 4.7 kcal mol -1 below the separated reactants, and the HBr···(H 2 O) 2 OH exit complex is bound by 6.4 kcal mol -1 relative to the separated products. This potential energy profile is further corrected by the zero point energies and spin–orbit coupling effects. Structurally, the Br + (H 2 O) 3 stationary points can be derived from those of the simpler Br + (H 2 O) 2 reaction by judiciously appending a H 2 O molecule. The Br + (H 2 O) 3 potential energy profile is compared with the Br + (H 2 O) 2 and Br + H 2 O reactions, as well as to the valence isoelectronic Cl + (H 2 O) 3 and F + (H 2 O) 3 systems. It is reasonable to expect that the reactions between the bromine atom and larger water clusters would be similar to the Br + (H 2 O) 3 reaction.

Thorium Bis‐Salophen Trimers as Anion Detectors and Binding Agents

Bis‐salophen ligands are the condensation product of a tetramine and a salicylaldehyde derivative. They feature two binding sites, both of which are tetradentate with mixed O/N donor atoms. Reaction with the ligand precursor and thorium nitrate tetrahydrate forms a 3:3 metal‐to‐ligand trimer with a ΔΔΔ‐chirality confirmed by X‐ray crystallography of a racemic single crystal. The structure has a pore in the center of the triangular structure measuring 6.22 Å at its narrowest point. This compound is air‐ and water‐stable as well as soluble in organic solvents. Here, this compound was screened with a series of tetrabutyl ammonium halide salts, and tetrabutylammonium (TBA) chloride showed the strongest binding to the complex. After the addition of 2 equivalents of TBACl, the complex and salt precipitate out of solution.

The distinct trimeric structure of the immunodominant chlamydial antigen Major Outer Membrane Protein

The chlamydial Major Outer Membrane Protein (MOMP) is a promising subunit vaccine candidate due to its abundance in the outer membrane (OM), the presence of four surface-exposed variable domains (VDs) containing neutralizing and serotyping epitopes, and confirmed T-cell epitopes located in its constant domains (CDs). However, recombinant and denatured forms of MOMP have failed to elicit immune responses comparable to native preparations, indicating that conformation is critical for immunogenicity. Here, we present two cryo-EM structures of native Chlamydia muridarum MOMP, isolated from infectious elementary bodies (EBs). EB MOMP forms a distinct trimer with a stem of three narrow, non-permeable β-barrels and an extracellular, folded antigenic cap that displays VDs. In complex with a neutralizing Fab fragment of a conformational antibody, the cap undergoes structural reorganization that shows how epitope presentation is modulated by immune engagement. These structures reveal the molecular basis of MOMP’s serovar specificity and provide a template for structure-based vaccine design.
