Multi-star processing and gyro filtering for the video inertial pointing system

The video inertial pointing (VIP) system is being developed to satisfy the acquisition and pointing requirements of astronomical telescopes. The VIP system uses a single video sensor to provide star position information that can be used to generate three-axis pointing error signals (multi-star processing) and for input to a cathode ray tube (CRT) display of the star field. The pointing error signals are used to update the telescope's gyro stabilization system (gyro filtering). The CRT display facilitates target acquisition and positioning of the telescope by a remote operator. Linearized small angle equations are used for the multistar processing and a consideration of error performance and singularities lead to star pair location restrictions and equation selection criteria. A discrete steady-state Kalman filter which uses the integration of the gyros is developed and analyzed. The filter includes unit time delays representing asynchronous operations of the VIP microprocessor and video sensor. A digital simulation of a typical gyro stabilized gimbal is developed and used to validate the approach to the gyro filtering.

Video Imaging System Particularly Suited for Dynamic Gear Inspection

A digital video imaging system that captures the image of a single tooth of interest of a rotating gear is disclosed. The video imaging system detects the complete rotation of the gear and divide that rotation into discrete time intervals so that each tooth of interest of the gear is precisely determined when it is at a desired location that is illuminated in unison with a digital video camera so as to record a single digital image for each tooth. The digital images are available to provide instantaneous analysis of the tooth of interest, or to be stored and later provide images that yield a history that may be used to predict gear failure, such as gear fatigue. The imaging system is completely automated by a controlling program so that it may run for several days acquiring images without supervision from the user.

Sampling video compression system

A system for transmitting video signal of compressed bandwidth is described. The transmitting station is provided with circuitry for dividing a picture to be transmitted into a plurality of blocks containing a checkerboard pattern of picture elements. Video signals along corresponding diagonal rows of picture elements in the respective blocks are regularly sampled. A transmitter responsive to the output of the sampling circuitry is included for transmitting the sampled video signals of one frame at a reduced bandwidth over a communication channel. The receiving station is provided with a frame memory for temporarily storing transmitted video signals of one frame at the original high bandwidth frequency.

Spatialyze: A Geospatial Video Analytics System with Spatial-Aware Optimizations

Videos that are shot using commodity hardware such as phones and surveillance cameras record various metadata such as time and location. We encounter suchgeospatial videoson a daily basis and such videos have been growing in volume significantly. Yet, we do not have data management systems that allow users to interact with such data effectively. In this paper, we describe Spatialyze, a new framework for end-to-end querying of geospatial videos. Spatialyze comes with a domain-specific language where users can construct geospatial video analytic workflows using a 3-step, declarative,build-filter-observeparadigm. Internally, Spatialyze leverages the declarative nature of such workflows, the temporal-spatial metadata stored with videos, and physical behavior of real-world objects to optimize the execution of workflows. Our results using real-world videos and workflows show that Spatialyze can reduce execution time by up to 5.3×, while maintaining up to 97.1% accuracy compared to unoptimized execution.

More About Video-Feedback Docking System

Two documents provide additional information on system described in "Docking System With Video Feedback" (MFS-28421). First document, "Standard Remote Manipulator System Docking Target Augmentation For Automated Docking", emphasizes use of retroreflectors in target. Second document, "Development Of A Video-Based Automatic Rendezvous And Docking System", describes hardware and software of system. System is video-sensor/electronic-feedback control system. Video camera on active or chasing vehicle views target on passive or chased vehicle. Target illuminated by light-emitting diodes on active vehicle. Image-data-processing subsystem converts video image of target into data on relative position, orientation, linear velocity, and angular velocity of two vehicles. Data then used by maneuver-control subsystem to control approach of active vehicle to passive vehicle.

Docking System With Video Feedback

Video-sensor/electronic-feedback control system being developed to provide automatic control of final stage of approach of active vehicle to passive vehicle or object. No communication between vehicles necessary. Docking target, mounted on post on passive vehicle, has three reflective dots, positions of which measured in image to determine relative position and orientation of target and vehicle. Control channels process video-sensor feedback into motion-control signals (thrustor commands in spacecraft or motor commands in robot). Conceived for use aboard chasing spacecraft to control its maneuvers in docking with chased spacecraft, concept also useful in controlling coupling of aircraft in flight or vessels on water or in controlling approach of robot to object to be manipulated.

Teleoperators and EVA for Shuttle missions

Review of the methods currently being contemplated for enabling the Space Shuttle to perform the Shuttle and payload support missions. Two general approaches to carrying out such activity are discussed - namely, the use of teleoperators and astronaut extravehicular activity (EVA). Detailed descriptions are given of an attached manipulator system (AMS) and a free-flying teleoperator (FFTO), noting the applications, capabilities, and limitations of each. The primary technology development areas for the AMS are in the areas of stabilization, structure, and manual control, while the technology areas of primary concern in the case of the FFTO include the manipulator-grappler system, the control system, the video system, and the mobility system. Four modes of EVA that are possible for the Shuttle are cited, noting the unlikelihood of direct applicability of EVA to payload deployment and retrieval and its feasibility for payload servicing and experiment support.

In-flight flow visualization of F-106B leading-edge vortex using the vapor-screen technique

A flight program was conducted with the objective to study the vortex flow systems existing around the F-106B aircraft. Level 1-G decelerating flight with varying angle of attack was considered along with conditions involving G levels in the range from 4.5 to 5.5 and angles of attack in the range from 16 to 19 degrees. It was demonstrated that the vapor screen technique can be applied successfully to flight vehicles under a variety of test conditions, taking into consideration the transonic maneuver performed by fighter aircraft. Details regarding the employed in-flight flow visualization technique are discussed, taking into account the seeding system, the light sheet system, the video system, the control system, and the recording of the data. Attention is also given to the flight program, the data development, and the scientific observations.

Designing, Modeling, Constructing, and Testing a Flat Panel Speaker and Sound Diffuser for a Simulator

The goal of this project was to design, model, build, and test a flat panel speaker and frame for a spherical dome structure being made into a simulator. The simulator will be a test bed for evaluating an immersive environment for human interfaces. This project focused on the loud speakers and a sound diffuser for the dome. The rest of the team worked on an Ambisonics 3D sound system, video projection system, and multi-direction treadmill to create the most realistic scene possible. The main programs utilized in this project, were Pro-E and COMSOL. Pro-E was used for creating detailed figures for the fabrication of a frame that held a flat panel loud speaker. The loud speaker was made from a thin sheet of Plexiglas and 4 acoustic exciters. COMSOL, a multiphysics finite analysis simulator, was used to model and evaluate all stages of the loud speaker, frame, and sound diffuser. Acoustical testing measurements were utilized to create polar plots from the working prototype which were then compared to the COMSOL simulations to select the optimal design for the dome. The final goal of the project was to install the flat panel loud speaker design in addition to a sound diffuser on to the wall of the dome. After running tests in COMSOL on various speaker configurations, including a warped Plexiglas version, the optimal speaker design included a flat piece of Plexiglas with a rounded frame to match the curvature of the dome. Eight of these loud speakers will be mounted into an inch and a half of high performance acoustic insulation, or Thinsulate, that will cover the inside of the dome. The following technical paper discusses these projects and explains the engineering processes used, knowledge gained, and the projected future goals of this project

Television systems for remote manipulation

An analytical and experimental study was conducted to specify a video system for remote manipulation in space. An operator function analysis identified two basic characteristics, work volume and element relationship, which define four manipulation tasks chosen for examination. A visual function analysis developed a set of elemental scene parameters which grouped the visual dimensions into major areas of influence. Simulation testing was conducted with a four degree-of-freedom motion frame which allowed an operator to perform the manipulation tasks. Four video systems were included in the simulation testing: a black and white and a color monoscopic system, a stereoscopic system, and a black and white two-view system. A sequential experimental plan first provided an overall analysis of the effects of tasks, scene parameters, and video systems. This was followed by a detailed experimental examination of the critical dimensions identified in the first experiment. Results are discussed in terms of a recommended TV system.
