Immersive Visualization for Scientific Data Analysis

We will present the use of immersive visualization at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), showcasing how immersive visualization is advancing scientific research and engineering practices and transforming our day-to-day operations. We are leveraging immersive visualization to support scientific discovery and engineering in various domains, including material design, computational fluid dynamics, immersive analytics, grid modernization, digital twins, and situated visualization. We have observed several benefits across four key areas: enhanced spatial judgments, improved understanding through interaction, increased capacity to embed high-dimensional data, and improved collaboration.

Opportunities and Challenges in the Visualization of Energy Scenarios for Decision-Making: Preprint

Scenario studies are a technique for representing a range of possible complex decisions through time, and analyzing the impact of those decisions on future outcomes of interest. It is common to use scenarios as a way to study potential pathways towards future build-out and decarbonization of energy systems. The results of these studies are often used by diverse energy system stakeholders - such as community organizations, power system utilities, and policymakers - for decision-making using data visualization. However, the role of visualization in facilitating decision-making with energy scenario data is not well understood. In this work, we review visualization designs employed in energy scenario studies found in the literature and publicly accessible online sources. We discuss the effectiveness of existing techniques particularly in regards to decision-making, and present opportunities and challenges in the visualization of energy system scenario data.

Calibration of multisite raters for prospective visual reads of amyloid PET scans

Abstract INTRODUCTION In multicenter Alzheimer's disease studies, amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) visual reads are typically performed centrally by a few experts. Incorporating a broader reader network enhances scalability and generalizability. METHODS Ten neuroimaging experts from eight Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRCs) visually read 180 amyloid PET scans (30 scans and 15 duplicate scans for each of four tracers, imaged across a wide variety of scanners), using preferred reading software without anatomical imaging or quantitation. Scans were classified as elevated or non‐elevated per tracer‐specific criteria. Inter‐ and intra‐rater agreement was assessed. RESULTS Inter‐rater agreement was substantial (Fleiss’κ = 0.78), with full consensus on 69% of scans. Inter‐rater reliability was substantial to perfect across tracers (Fleiss’κ = 0.70–0.87). Intra‐rater agreement was substantial to perfect (Cohen'sκ = 0.79‐1). Scans with intermediate (10–40 Centiloid) quantitation had lower reader agreement. DISCUSSION A multicenter expert network achieved substantial agreement classifying amyloid PET scans. These scans provide a standard for reader training and reliability assurance in future studies. Highlights Calibration methods ensure reliable amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) visual reads across multiple raters. Substantial agreement is possible across readers using their preferred tools. Agreement is also substantial regardless of the amyloid PET tracer used. Scans with intermediate (10–40 Centiloid) quantitation have lower reader agreement. The calibration set will become a training tool for amyloid PET visual read studies.

Visual‐Analytics Bridge Complexity and Accessibility for Robust Urban Water Planning

Urban water resources planning is complicated by unprecedented uncertainty in supply and demand. Real‐world planning often simplifies the full range of uncertainty faced by a system into a limited set of deterministic scenarios to enhance accessibility for decision‐makers and the public. However, overlooking uncertainty can expose the system to failures. On the other end of the spectrum, academically developed tools for scenario analysis rigorously quantify the combined effects of multiple sources of uncertainty, but the practical application of these models is limited by the challenges of information visualization and communication of results. In short, municipal water supply planners lack access to planning frameworks that effectively integrate a rigorous treatment of uncertainty with accessible, user‐friendly visual and interactive tools to enhance user accessibility. In this work, we fill this gap by proposing Visual‐Robust Decision Making, and demonstrate an application for the city of Santa Barbara (SB), CA. Santa Barbara faces multiple uncertainties from pending state and federal regulations to changing hydrology and water demand. The city seeks to increase its water portfolio robustness by expanding its seawater desalination plant, but must decide how much capacity to add. We introduce computational tools that assess uncertainty across nine uncertain drivers identified with the help of water planners in SB. To allow public participation in the desalination expansion decision, we develop interactive visual‐analytics to aid decision‐makers and stakeholders in navigating complex scenario analysis outcomes. Our results quantify the tradeoffs between increased capacity and system robustness and aim to enhance participation and uncertainty characterization of urban water planning efforts.

Spatial profiling of the interplay between cell type- and vision-dependent transcriptomic programs in the visual cortex

How early sensory experience during “critical periods” of postnatal life affects the organization of the mammalian neocortex at the resolution of neuronal cell types is poorly understood. We previously reported that the functional and molecular profiles of layer 2/3 (L2/3) cell types in the primary visual cortex (V1) are vision-dependent [S. Chenget al.,Cell185, 311–327.e24 (2022)]. Here, we characterize the spatial organization of L2/3 cell types with and without visual experience. Spatial transcriptomic profiling based on 500 genes recapitulates the zonation of L2/3 cell types along the pial–ventricular axis in V1. By applying multitasking theory, we suggest that the spatial zonation of L2/3 cell types is linked to the continuous nature of their gene expression profiles, which can be represented as a 2D manifold bounded by three archetypal cell types. By comparing normally reared and dark reared L2/3 cells, we show that visual deprivation-induced transcriptomic changes comprise two independent gene programs. The first, induced specifically in the visual cortex, includes immediate-early genes and genes associated with metabolic processes. It manifests as a change in cell state that is orthogonal to cell-type-specific gene expression programs. By contrast, the second program impacts L2/3 cell-type identity, regulating a subset of cell-type-specific genes and shifting the distribution of cells within the L2/3 cell-type manifold. Through an integrated analysis of spatial transcriptomics with single-nucleus RNA-seq data, we describe how vision patterns cortical L2/3 cell types during the critical period.

ChatGrid: Power Grid Visualization Empowered by Large Language Model

This paper presents a novel open framework, ChatGrid, for easy, intuitive, and interactive geospatial visualization of large-scale transmission networks. ChatGrid uses state-of-the-art techniques for geospatial visualization of large networks including 2.5D views, animated flows, hierarchical and level-based filtering, and aggregation to provide visual information in an easy, cognitive manner. The highlight of ChatGrid is a natural language query based interface powered by large language model (ChatGPT) that offers an enhanced interactive experience whereby the user asks a question and ChatGrid provides the information both in text and visual. We discuss the architecture, implementation, design decisions, and usage of large language model for ChatGrid.

Visualization of Noisy and Less Noisy Computational Basis States in Quantum Computing

Quantum computing technology holds substantial promise as a reliable computational paradigm. However, current noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) systems, are significantly impacted by noise originating from hardware inconsistencies. This noise causes errors and lowers output fidelity. So we must find which basis states cause errors. However, there are two main challenges in analyzing noise corresponding to basis states. First, the noise distribution data is high dimensional in nature, thereby making its analysis challenging. Second, although functional box plots have been used in the state of the art research to understand such a high dimensional data, they suffer from clutter and occlusion issues because of overplotting. In this study, we introduce an innovative visualization pipeline to address the aforementioned challenges to provide a clear depiction of noisy and less-noisy basis states. Specifically, our proposed visualization pipeline comprises three stages namely, low dimensional embedding, clustering, and violin plot visualization, to reduce visual clutter and effectively analyze high-dimensional noise distribution data. Our analysis uses quantum machine learning (QML) circuits as case study for drawing a distinction between noisy and less noisy basis states.

GASP: Gradient-Aware Shortest Path Algorithm for Boundary-Confined 2-Manifold Reeb Graph Visualization

Reeb graphs are an important tool for abstracting and representing the topological structure of a function defined on a manifold. We have identified three properties for faithfully representing Reeb graphs in a visualization: they should be constrained to the boundary, compact, and aligned with the function gradient. Existing algorithms for drawing Reeb graphs are agnostic to or violate these properties. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm to generate Reeb graph visualizations, called GASP, that is cognizant of these properties, thereby producing visualizations that are more representative of the underlying data. To demonstrate the improvements, the resulting Reeb graphs are evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively against the geometric barycenter algorithm, using its implementation available in the Topology ToolKit (TTK), a widely adopted tool for calculating and visualizing Reeb graphs.

A Scoping Review of Mixed Initiative Visual Analytics in the Automation Renaissance

Artificial agents are increasingly integrated into data analysis workflows, carrying out tasks that were primarily done by humans. Our research explores how the introduction of automation recalibrates the dynamic between humans and automating technology. To explore this question, we conducted a scoping review encompassing twenty years of mixed-initiative visual analytic systems. To describe and contrast the relationship between humans and automation, we developed an integrated taxonomy to delineate the objectives of these mixed-initiative visual analytics tools, how much automation they support, and the assumed roles of humans. Here, we describe our qualitative approach of integrating existing theoretical frameworks with new codes we developed. Our analysis shows that the visualization research literature lacks consensus on the definition of mixed-initiative systems and explores a limited potential of the collaborative interaction landscape between people and automation. Our research provides a scaffold to advance the discussion of human-AI collaboration during visual data analysis. Blue Keanu: A Scientific Visualization Tool For Network Data

This software allows the user to visualize complex PCAP-ng files captured from network capture software such as Wireshark. The visualization runs in a GUI window that can be zoomed or moved to areas of interest in a waterfall type display. The user then can see an area of interest that looks different than the typical traffic visually, such as a human interaction or non-repetitive area of data. The program will tell the user the packet number and byte offset of interest for fast analysis of discrete atomic or non-random events. This is particularly useful for visualization of unknown binary format data, such as in PLC or SCADA protocols that may have human or other non-repetitive activity for further analysis, reverse engineering, or fast forensic analysis.

Electronic Visualization Laboratory's 50th Anniversary Retrospective: Look to the Future, Build on the Past

September 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) at University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). EVL's introduction of the CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment in 1992, the first widely replicated, projection-based, walk-in, virtual-reality (VR) system in the world, put EVL at the forefront of collaborative, immersive data exploration and analytics. However, the journey did not begin then. Since its founding in 1973, EVL has been developing tools and techniques for real-time, interactive visualizations—pillars of VR. But EVL's culture is also relevant to its successes, as it has always been an interdisciplinary lab that fosters teamwork, where each person's expertise contributes to the development of the necessary tools, hardware, system software, applications, and human interface models to solve problems. Over the years, as multidisciplinary collaborations evolved and advanced scientific instruments and data resources were distributed globally, the need to access and share data and visualizations while working with colleagues, local and remote, synchronous and asynchronous, also became important fields of study. This paper is a retrospective of EVL's past 50 years that surveys the many networked, immersive, collaborative visualization and VR systems and applications it developed and deployed, as well as lessons learned and future plans.

Novel Results Visualization for Dynamic PSA and New Modeling Features in EMRALD

The Event Modeling Risk Assessment Linked Diagram (EMRALD) tool, developed at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), was designed to simplify the creation of dynamic models and support various research projects. One of the primary goals of EMRALD was to provide visual methods for modeling. EMRALD consists of two main components: a web-based user interface for model development and a solve engine for running model simulations. Over time, it has evolved to meet the diverse needs of its users. Initially, EMRALD's results were simple text outputs with final key state percentages and uncertainty bounds. However, because EMRALD utilizes a three-phase discrete event simulation and tracks the paths of each simulation run leading to a key state, there is significant potential to analyze large sets of path results data, including state paths, events, and timing. Visualizing this data meaningfully posed a challenge. To address this, a novel time-based Sankey diagram was developed. EMRALD exports results data in a format that can be opened in this Sankey viewer, allowing users to visualize paths, occurrences, events, and probability data for the entire simulation run in a single diagram. Moreover, when EMRALD was first created, there were limited tools capable of meeting its graphical requirements, many of which are no longer supported. In 2024, a new web-based interface was developed using modern graphing tools, enabling additional modeling features. This paper discusses the new dynamic PSA results visualization capability and the enhanced modeling tools available in EMRALD.

Smartphone application for visualizing building air leakage

Annually, unwanted air leakage through building envelopes accounts for 4 quads of energy consumption in the United States, which translates to about 10% of total building energy consumption. Locating and sealing leakage sites is crucial fordecreasing building energy consumption. Smartphones are ubiquitous and contain sophisticated cameras and highperformance processors that could be employed to visualize air leakage using the background-oriented schlieren imaging technique, making leak detection cheaper and easier. This technique requires a textured and high-contrast background such as a brick or concrete masonry unit wall, a building air leak that has a temperature difference compared with the ambient air, and an imaging system. This work focuses on using smartphones as the imaging system to visualize air leakages. The paper discusses application development and the results of testing to determine leakage visualization performance as a function of leak temperature. The results show that leaks with a temperature difference greater than 16°C compared with the ambient air temperature were visualized using existing smartphones.

Integrating Immersive Visualization in Molten-Salt Reactor Waste Management for Experimental Design and Planning

Molten-salt reactors (MSRs) represent a promising solution for next-generation nuclear energy, offering advantages in safety, fuel efficiency, and waste minimization. However, their liquid-fueled design presents unique challenges for spent fuel management, making post-shutdown waste characterization essential for developing effective strategies. Despite this need, there is a notable absence of visualization platforms specifically tailored to the unique characteristics and analytical requirements of MSR waste management. Existing tools in the nuclear industry are primarily designed for reactor operations or generic data exploration and lack both integration with MSR-specific multiphysics frameworks and the ability to simultaneously visualize time-dependent thermal fields, chemical composition evolution, and radiation distribution patterns. To address these limitations, this paper presents an immersive virtual reality (VR) visualization platform that processes and displays high-fidelity multiphysics simulation output from the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework in real-time, using Unity. The platform visualizes MSR waste characteristics such as nuclide decay, salt cooling, and corrosion by using Exodus II output data and running on a VR headset. It includes a user-friendly interface with features such as visibility toggling, cross-sectional slicing, and time-series animation for exploring simulation data. These capabilities support experimental design, stakeholder engagement, and public communication by making complex reactor behavior more accessible and understandable. By enhancing spatial reasoning and reducing cognitive load, this immersive environment fosters more effective communication and decision-making in MSR waste management.

Expanding Access to Science Participation: A FAIR Framework for Petascale Data Visualization and Analytics

The massive data generated by scientists daily serve as both a major catalyst for new discoveries and innovations, as well as a significant roadblock that restricts access to the data. Here, our paper introduces a new approach to removing Big Data barriers and democratizing access to petascale data for the broader scientific community. Our novel data fabric abstraction layer allows user-friendly querying of scientific information while hiding the complexities of dealing with file systems or cloud services. We enable FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) access to datasets such as NASA’s petascale climate datasets. Our paper presents an approach to managing, visualizing, and analyzing petabytes of data within a browser on equipment ranging from the top NASA supercomputer to commodity hardware like a laptop. Our novel data fabric abstraction utilizes state-of-the art progressive compression algorithms and machine-learning insights to power scalable visualization dashboards for petascale data. The result provides users with the ability to identify extreme events or trends dynamically, expanding access to scientific data and further enabling discoveries. We validate our approach by improving the ability of climate scientists to visually explore their data via three fully interactive dashboards. We further validate our approach by deploying the dashboards and simplified training materials in the classroom at a minority-serving institution. These dashboards, released in simplified form to the general public, contribute significantly to a broader push to democratize the access and use of climate data.

Phosphoproteomics Modifications in Women with Rheumatoid Arthritis─Application of Web-Based Software to Enhance Data Visualization

Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at increased risk of functional disability, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, all of which are influenced by dysregulated skeletal muscle. Here, this pilot study aims to identify phosphoproteomics changes in RA skeletal muscle and visualize modifications through development of a web-based app designed to promote user-friendly data interpretation and visualization. NanoLC–MS/MS analysis was performed on vastus lateralis biopsies from three women with RA and matched healthy controls. Differential analysis was performed using the Limma R package. Kinase substrate enrichment analysis (KSEA) predicted changes in kinase activity. RA muscle displayed 35 upregulated and 60 downregulated phosphosites, including the cytoskeletal proteins TTN (Ser33201, Ser33013, Ser20925), NEB (Ser2219, Thr254, Ser33013, Ser20925), FLNA (Ser1459), and LASP1 (Ser146). Compared to healthy controls, KSEA predicted decreased activity of several kinases in RA muscle, including PRKACA and CDKs. All such changes were visualized by use of our web-based app. Overall, phosphoproteome analysis reveals signaling alterations in RA skeletal muscle linked to cytoskeletal proteins, representing candidate disease biomarkers; these modifications can be explored through use of our web-based software.

Design Overview of a High-Pressure Helium Flow Visualization Apparatus for Blanket Cooling Studies

Cooling of the fusion blanket first wall remains a significant challenge given the adverse conditions of heat and particle flux encountered near the plasma. Helium emerges as an attractive cooling candidate because of its chemical and neutronic inertness and separability from hydrogenic species (e.g. tritium). Because of the low thermal mass of helium, optimization of these coolant channels is warranted to provide high heat transfer performance at low pumping costs. Increasingly, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are employed to model and optimize these flow channels, and accompanying experimental data are needed to validate the predictions of these models. To provide the aforementioned experimental data, a high-pressure helium flow visualization upgrade has been designed for the Helium Flow Loop Experiment facility. This apparatus was built to American Society of Mechanical Engineers boiler and pressure vessel standards to withstand operating pressure of 4 MPa and mated to high-pressure glass windows. Seedless flow visualization is performed via high-speed background oriented schlieren (BOS), with image correlation used for time-resolved two-dimensional velocimetry at frequencies in excess of 60 kHz. Rectangular flow channel test articles are additively manufactured via laser powder bed fusion and installed into this visualization apparatus, with one-sided heating supplied by resistive heaters. In conclusion, the chosen test geometries were informed by prior CFD simulations, and the helium flow structures observed via BOS (detachment, recirculation, etc.) will be used for the validation of these accompanying models, in support of the design and optimization of blanket cooling channel configurations.

Make the Fastest Faster: Importance Mask Synthesis for Interactive Volume Visualization using Reconstruction Neural Networks

Visualizing a large-scale volumetric dataset with high resolution is challenging due to the substantial computational time and space complexity. Recent deep learning-based image inpainting methods significantly improve rendering latency by reconstructing a high-resolution image for visualization in constant time on GPU from a partially rendered image where only a portion of pixels go through the expensive rendering pipeline. However, existing solutions need to render every pixel of either a predefined regular sampling pattern or an irregular sample pattern predicted from a low-resolution image rendering. Both methods require a significant amount of expensive pixel-level rendering. In this work, we provide Importance Mask Learning (IML) and Synthesis (IMS) networks, which are the first attempts to directly synthesize important regions of the regular sampling pattern from the user’s view parameters, to further minimize the number of pixels to render by jointly considering the dataset, user behavior, and the downstream reconstruction neural network. Our solution is a unified framework to handle various types of inpainting methods through the proposed differentiable compaction/decompaction layers. Experiments show our method can further improve the overall rendering latency of state-of-the-art volume visualization methods using reconstruction neural network for free when rendering scientific volumetric datasets. Our method can also directly optimize the off-the-shelf pre-trained reconstruction neural networks without elongated retraining.
