Unraveling the 10 micron "silicate" feature of protostars: the detection of frozen interstellar ammonia

We present infrared spectra of four embedded protostars in the 750-1230 cm-1 (13.3-8.1 microns) range. For NGC 7538 IRS 9, a new band is reported at 1110 cm-1 (9.01 microns, and several others may be present near 785, 820, 900, 1030, and 1075 cm-1 (12.7, 12.2, 11.1, 9.71, and 9.30 microns). The band 1110 cm-1 is attributed to frozen NH3. Its position and width imply that the NH3 is frozen in a polar, H2O-rich interstellar ice component. The NH3/H2O ice ratio inferred for NGC 7538 IRS 9 is 0.1, making NH3 as important a component as CH3OH and CO2 in the polar ices along this line of sight. At these concentrations, hydrogen bonding between the NH3 and H2O can account for much of the enigmatic low-frequency wing on the 3240 cm-1 (3.09 microns) H2O interstellar ice band. The strength of the implied NH3 deformation fundamental at 1624 cm-1 (6.158 microns) can also account for the absorption at this position reported by ISO.

Biological removal of gaseous ammonia in biofilters: space travel and earth-based applications

Gaseous NH3 removal was studied in laboratory-scale biofilters (14-L reactor volume) containing perlite inoculated with a nitrifying enrichment culture. These biofilters received 6 L/min of airflow with inlet NH3 concentrations of 20 or 50 ppm, and removed more than 99.99% of the NH3 for the period of operation (101, 102 days). Comparison between an active reactor and an autoclaved control indicated that NH3 removal resulted from nitrification directly, as well as from enhanced absorption resulting from acidity produced by nitrification. Spatial distribution studies (20 ppm only) after 8 days of operation showed that nearly 95% of the NH3 could be accounted for in the lower 25% of the biofilter matrix, proximate to the port of entry. Periodic analysis of the biofilter material (20 and 50 ppm) showed accumulation of the nitrification product NO3- early in the operation, but later both NO2- and NO3- accumulated. Additionally, the N-mass balance accountability dropped from near 100% early in the experiments to approximately 95 and 75% for the 20- and 50-ppm biofilters, respectively. A partial contributing factor to this drop in mass balance accountability was the production of NO and N2O, which were detected in the biofilter exhaust.

An Empirical Expression for Line Widths of Ammonia from Far-Infrared Measurements

The hydrogen- and self-broadened line widths of 116 (sup 14)NH(sub 3) ground state transitions with J,K = 1,0 to 10,10 have been measured at 0.0006 cm(sup -1) resolution using a Bruker spectrometer between 40 to 210 cm(sup -1). These experimental widths have been reproduced to 2.4% and 11% respectively using an heuristically derived expression of the form....

Ammonia Offgassing from SA9T

NH3 is a degradation product of SA9T, a solid-amine sorbent developed by Hamilton Sundstrand, that is continually emitted into the gas stream being conditioned by this sorbent. NH3 offgassing rates were measured using FTIR spectroscopy using a packed bed at similar contact times as offgassing tests conducted at Hamilton Sundstrand and at the Ames Research Center. The bed was challenged with moist air at several flow rates and humidities and NH3 concentration of the effluent was measured for several hours. The NH3 offgassing rates in open-loop testing were calculated from the steady state outlet NH3 concentration and flow rate. NH3 offgassing rates from SA9T were found to be influenced by the contact time with the adsorbent (flow rate) and by the humidity of the inlet gas stream, which are consistent with previous studies. Closed-loop vacuum-swing adsorption cycling rates verified that NH3 offgassing continues when a constant source of water vapor is present.

Ammonia Detection

The different advantageous embodiments provide for identifying gas leakage in a platform. A processor unit identifies a rate of the gas of the substance leaking from a container in a first compartment for a platform. The processor unit also identifies an amount of gas that has leaked from the container at a selected time based on the rate of the gas of the substance leaking from the container and a total time. The processor unit identifies an amount of the gas of the substance present in a number of compartments associated with the first compartment using the amount of gas leaked from the container in the first compartment and a pressure for each compartment in the number of compartments. The processor unit determines whether the amount of gas in at least one of the first compartment and the number of compartments is outside of a desired amount for the gas.

Secondary Inorganic Aerosol Chemistry and Its Impact on Atmospheric Visibility Over an Ammonia-Rich Urban Area in Central Taiwan

This study investigated the hourly inorganic aerosol chemistry and its impact on atmospheric visibility over an urban area in Central Taiwan, by relying on measurements of aerosol light extinction, inorganic gases, and PM 2.5 water-soluble ions (WSIs), and simulations from a thermodynamic equilibrium model. On average, the sulfate (SO 4 2− ), nitrate (NO 3 − ), and ammonium (NH 4 + ) components (SNA) contributed ∼90% of WSI concentrations, which in turn made up about 50% of the PM 2.5 mass. During the entire observation period, PM 2.5 and SNA concentrations, aerosol pH, aerosol liquid water content (ALWC), and sulfur and nitrogen conversion ratios all increased with decreasing visibility. In particular, the NO 3 − contribution to PM 2.5 increased, whereas the SO 4 2− contribution decreased, with decreasing visibility. The diurnal variations of the above parameters indicate that the interaction and likely mutual promotion between NO 3 − and ALWC enhanced the hygroscopicity and aqueous-phase reactions conducive for NO 3 − formation, thus led to severely impaired visibility. The high relative humidity (RH) at the study area (average 70.7%) was a necessary but not sole factor leading to enhanced NO 3 − formation, which was more directly associated with elevated ALWC and aerosol pH. Simulations from the thermodynamic model depict that the inorganic aerosol system in the study area was characterized by fully neutralized SO 4 2− (i.e. a saturated factor in visibility reduction) and excess NH 4 + amidst a NH 3 -rich environment. As a result, PM 2.5 composition was most sensitive to gas-phase HNO 3 , and hence NOx, and relatively insensitive to NH 3 . Consequently, a reduction of NOx would result in instantaneous cuts of NO 3 − , PM 2.5 , and ALWC, and hence improved visibility. On the other hand, a substantial amount of NH 3 reduction (>70%) would be required to lower the aerosol pH, driving more than 50% of the particulate phase NO 3 − to the gas phase, thereby making NH 3 a limiting factor in shifting PM 2.5 composition.
