The influence of thermospheric winds on the auroral red-line profile of atomic oxygen.

Discussion of the effect of thermospheric winds on the emission profile of lambda 6300. It is shown that meridional winds play a significant role in determining the shape of this emission and that the conventional diffusion of O(super 1 D) hypothesis, although important, is not adequate to explain the observed features completely.

Mariner 9 ultraviolet spectrometer experiment: Mars atomic oxygen 1304-Angstrom emission

Selected results are presented for a considerable quantity of Mariner 9 1304-A data for the first 100 revolutions from both the bright limb and disk of Mars. The limb data suggest that the exospheric temperature is less than it was in 1969 when Mariners 6 and 7 encountered the planet. Similar (O) concentrations (0.5 to 1%) are derived for a temperature of about 300 K. Structure in the limb profiles below 200 km suggests the possibility that about 0.2 kR of the observed approximately 0.8 kR near 150 km is due to dissociative excitation of CO2. Significant differences in selected limb profiles suggest that local as well as random variations in (O) occur.

Rate of recombination of oxygen atoms and CO at temperatures below ambient

The measurements reported were conducted with 30.0 torr CO, 40.0 torr argon, and varying amounts of carbon dioxide from about 20 to 230 torr. Measurements were made at 277, 272, 263, and 257 K. The pseudo-first-order decay rate as a function of carbon dioxide pressure is shown in a graph. An Arrhenius plot for the rate constants obtained from the measurements is also presented. A value for the activation energy was determined on the basis of a linear least-squares fit to the data.

Absolute rate parameters for the reaction of ground state atomic oxygen with carbonyl sulfide

The rate parameters for the reaction of O(3P) with carbonyl sulfide, O(3P) + OCS yields CO + SO, have been determined directly by monitoring O(3P) using the flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence technique. The value for reaction rate was measured over a temperature range of 263-502 K and the data were fitted to an Arrhenius expression with good linearity. A comparison of the present results with those from previous studies of this reaction is also presented.
