Regional variations in the magnitude of heiligenschein and causal connections, part O

A preliminary quantitative analysis was conducted of four frames exposed by the Apollo 15 metric camera. Two of the frames show the zero-phase surge on maria and the other two show the surge on terrae. It was found that the curves resulting from brightness plotted as a function of phase angle, differ markedly according to which terrain type is involved. The magnitude of the heiligenschein was found to be significantly greater for the maria than for the terrae.

A study of the dynamics of rotating space stations with elastically connected counterweight and attached flexible appendages. Volume 1: Theory

The formulation of a mathematical model for predicting the dynamic behavior of rotating flexible space station configurations was conducted. The overall objectives of the study were: (1) to develop the theoretical techniques for determining the behavior of a realistically modeled rotating space station, (2) to provide a versatile computer program for the numerical analysis, and (3) to present practical concepts for experimental verification of the analytical results. The mathematical model and its associated computer program are described.

Computer program for the load and trajectory analysis of two DOF bodies connected by an elastic tether: Users manual

The derivation of the differential equations of motion of a 3 Degrees of Freedom body joined to a 3 Degrees of Freedom body by an elastic tether. The tether is represented by a spring and dashpot in parallel. A computer program which integrates the equations of motion is also described. Although the derivation of the equations of motions are for a general system, the computer program is written for defining loads in large boosters recovered by parachutes.

The limits of the adaptation of life to extreme conditions (in connection with problems of exobiology)

Accommodation is discussed as a universal evolutionary principle which essentially will apply to all life forms, regardless of chemical base (carbon, silicon, etc.). Life forms must either adapt to extreme conditions or perish, and for any life form an extremum factor is any significant deviation in environmental parameters. The possibility of life forms existing in specific extraterrestrial environments is discussed, and a conclusion is drawn which unequivocally states that through many forms of accommodation life is possible in many different environments.

Users manual: Dynamics of two bodies connected by an elastic tether, six degrees of freedom forebody and five degrees of freedom decelerator

The equations of motion and a computer program for the dynamics of a six degree of freedom body joined to a five degree of freedom body by a quasilinear elastic tether are presented. The forebody is assumed to be a completely general rigid body with six degrees of freedom; the decelerator is also assumed to be rigid, but with only five degrees of freedom (symmetric about its longitudinal axis). The tether is represented by a spring and dashpot in parallel, where the spring constant is a function of tether elongation. Lagrange's equation is used to derive the equations of motion with the Lagrange multiplier technique used to express the constraint provided by the tether. A computer program is included which provides a time history of the dynamics of both bodies and the tension in the tether.

Analysis of the relationship between errors in manufacture of slot connections and gear drive noises

On the basis of experimental research, an analysis was carried out of the effect of certain errors in manufacture of straight-barrel slots on the noise characteristics of gear drives. In carrying out the experiments, the gear crowns of the test wheels were held immovable, and only the geometric dimensions of the slots and the mutual locations of the individual elements were varied. The investigation of the effect of each factor was carried out under otherwise equal conditions, on 34:56 cog ratio gear pairs (m = 2mm), made of 40 C steel, with a gear crown accuracy of 7 X, machining fineness 7, at a speed v = 7.1 m/sec. The number of slots was 6. The clearance in slot pairs in dimension D, equal to 0.015, 0.05, 0.08 and 0.110 mm, was obtained by change in the outer diameter of the spindle by means of polishing. The results of the tests of the experimental wheels showed that their noise level increases with increase in clearance.

Synthesis of mechanisms with flexible centrifugal-inertial connections according to fixed dynamic characteristics

The criteria for the selection of dynamic characteristics of flexible centrifugal-inertial couplings are discussed. The basic properties considered are: (1) vibration isolation, (2) vibration quenching, and (3) transmission properties. It is stated that the most promising couplings are those with a nonlinear relation between the magnitude of the torque transmitted and the magnitude of deformation of the coupling. The efforts of various investigators are briefly analyzed. Mathematical models are developed to show the relationships of the parameters involved.

The temporal organization of processes of cell reproduction and its connection with rhythms of radiosensitivity of the body

Radiosensitivity of individual phases of the mitotic cycle was studied in synchronous cell cultures and in several biological objects. It was found that radiosensitivity changed essentially according to phases of the mitotic cycle, depending on the kind of cells, evaluation criteria and the radiation dosage. Tests on partially synchronized HeLa cell populations, according to the criterion of survival, showed them most sensitive during mitosis, as well as in later G sub 1- or early DNA-synthesizing stages. With radiation in doses of 300 rad, the proportion of surviving cells showed a sensitivity directly before DNA synthesis of approximately 4 times higher than the later S-phase and during the major portion of G sub 1- and G sub 2-periods. Sensitivity of cells in mitosis was approximately 3 times higher than in late G sub 1- and early S-phases.
