A multi-channel coronal spectrophotometer.

We describe a new multi-channel coronal spectrophotometer system, presently being installed at Mees Solar Observatory, Mount Haleakala, Maui. The apparatus is designed to record and interpret intensities from many sections of the visible and near-visible spectral regions simultaneously, with relatively high spatial and temporal resolution. The detector, a thermoelectrically cooled silicon vidicon camera tube, has its central target area divided into a rectangular array of about 100,000 pixels and is read out in a slow-scan (about 2 sec/frame) mode. Instrument functioning is entirely under PDP 11/45 computer control, and interfacing is via the CAMAC system.

The determination of ethanol in blood and urine by mass fragmentography

A mass fragmentographic technique for a rapid, specific and sensitive determination of ethanol in blood and urine is described. A Varian gas chromatograph coupled through an all-glass membrane separator to a Finnigan quadripole mass spectrometer and interfaced to a computer system is used for ethanol determination in blood and urine samples. A procedure for plotting calibration curves for ethanol quantitation is also described. Quantitation is achieved by plotting the peak area ratios of undeuterated-to-deuterated ethanol fragment ions against the amount of ethanol added. Representative results obtained by this technique are included.

A generalized tensor formulation of atmosphere and seas dynamics

A generalized mathematical model was developed for simulation of the dynamics and transport of both the atmosphere and seas. A nearly horizontal bottom coordinate surface conforms to the land-to-air interface and the sea-floor-to-water interface, which simplifies computations. General vertical motion of the other quasi-horizontal coordinate surfaces is allowed; external gravity waves can be represented by the top coordinate surface, and meteorological fronts and inversion layers in the atmosphere and refractive layers in the seas can be represented with enhanced resolution by the internal quasi-horizontal coordinate surfaces. A tensor reformulation of the standard subgrid mixing theory departs significantly from the standard theory in allowing, as a solution under adiabatic conditions, rigid-body rotation of the atmosphere.

Radar range data signal enhancement tracker

The design, fabrication, and performance characteristics are described of two digital data signal enhancement filters which are capable of being inserted between the Space Shuttle Navigation Sensor outputs and the guidance computer. Commonality of interfaces has been stressed so that the filters may be evaluated through operation with simulated sensors or with actual prototype sensor hardware. The filters will provide both a smoothed range and range rate output. Different conceptual approaches are utilized for each filter. The first filter is based on a combination low pass nonrecursive filter and a cascaded simple average smoother for range and range rate, respectively. Filter number two is a tracking filter which is capable of following transient data of the type encountered during burn periods. A test simulator was also designed which generates typical shuttle navigation sensor data.

Some recent results in quiescent prominence spectrometry

This paper describes some recent results of a quiescent-prominence spectrometry program. The observations were made with a 25-cm coronagraph/coude spectrograph system using a silicon vidicon detector. This detector consists of 500 contiguous channels covering approximately 6 or 80 A, depending on the grating used. The instrument is interfaced to a computer system and has the important advantages of wide spectral response, linearity, and signal averaging with real-time display. Its principal drawback is the relatively small target size. For the present work, the aperture was about 3 x 5 arcsec. Absolute intensity calibrations were made by measuring quiet regions near the center of the sun.

Digital imaging techniques in experimental stress analysis

Digital imaging techniques are utilized as a measure of surface displacement components in laser speckle metrology. An image scanner which is interfaced to a computer records and stores in memory the laser speckle patterns of an object in a reference and deformed configuration. Subsets of the deformed images are numerically correlated with the references as a measure of surface displacements. Discrete values are determined around a closed contour for plane problems which then become input into a boundary integral equation method in order to calculate surface traction in the contour. Stresses are then calculated within this boundary. The solution procedure is illustrated by a numerical example of a case of uniform tension.

Structural optimization - Challenges and opportunities

A review of developments in structural optimization techniques and their interface with growing computer capabilities is presented. Structural design steps comprise functional definition of an object, an evaluation phase wherein external influences are quantified, selection of the design concept, material, object geometry, and the internal layout, and quantification of the physical characteristics. Optimization of a fully stressed design is facilitated by use of nonlinear mathematical programming which permits automated definition of the physics of a problem. Design iterations terminate when convergence is acquired between mathematical and physical criteria. A constrained minimum algorithm has been formulated using an Augmented Lagrangian approach and a generalized reduced gradient to obtain fast convergence. Various approximation techniques are mentioned. The synergistic application of all the methods surveyed requires multidisciplinary teamwork during a design effort.

Integrated airframe/propulsion control system architectures (IAPSA) study

Three integrated airframe/propulsion control system (ACS) architectures have been developed and are discussed. The baseline is a state of the art design which integrates autonomous propusion control and airframe flight control systems. Two alternate ACSs for the 1990s using emerging technologies were developed and are compared with each other and the baseline. One of these, designated D/D, uses parallel distributed processing, while the other, designated C/D, centralizes the processing into two centrally located redundant electronics complex. The C/D system locates all redundant computing elements and interfacing electronics in two boxes with optical sensor and actuation devices optically connected to the two boxes. Evaluation reveals the C/D architecture to be better than the other two in five of ten categories; D/D is superior in only two of the ten.

Statistical Signal Analysis for Systems with Interferenced Inputs

A new approach is introduced, based on statistical signal analysis, which overcomes the error due to input signal interference. The model analyzed is given. The input signals u sub 1 (t) and u sub 2 (t) are assumed to be unknown. The measurable signals x sub 1 (t) and x sub 2 (t) are interferened according to the frequency response functions, H sub 12 (f) and H sub 21 (f). The goal of the analysis was to evaluate the power output due to each input, u sub 1 (t) and u sub 2 (t), for the case where both are applied to the same time. In addition, all frequency response functions are calculated. The interferenced system is described by a set of five equations with six unknown functions. An IBM XT Personal Computer, which was interfaced with the FFT, was used to solve the set of equations. The software was tested on an electrical two-input, one-output system. The results were excellent. The research presented includes the analysis of the acoustic radiation from a rectangular plate with two force inputs and the sound pressure as an output signal.

The evolution of automated launch processing

The NASA Launch Processing System (LPS) to which attention is presently given has arrived at satisfactory solutions for the distributed-computing, good user interface and dissimilar-hardware interface, and automation-related problems that emerge in the specific arena of spacecraft launch preparations. An aggressive effort was made to apply the lessons learned in the 1960s, during the first attempts at automatic launch vehicle checkout, to the LPS. As the Space Shuttle System continues to evolve, the primary contributor to safety and reliability will be the LPS.

A fault-tolerant avionics suite for an entry research vehicle

A highly-reliable avionics suite has been designed for an Entry Research Vehicle. The autonomous spacecraft would be deployed from the Space Shuttle Orbiter and perform a variety of aerodynamic and propulsive maneuvers which may be required for future space transportation system vehicles. The flight electronics consist of a central fault-tolerant processor, which is resilient to all first failures, reliably cross-strapped to redundant and distributed sets of sensors and effectors. This paper describes the preliminary design and analysis of the architecture which resulted from a fifteen month study by the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory for the NASA Langley Research Center. After a brief introduction to the design task, the architecture of the central flight computer and its interface to the vehicle are discussed. Following this, the method and results of the baseline reliability study for the avionic suite are presented.
