Collapse of the Kondo state and ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in YbFe 2 Zn 20

Here, we present the electrical resistivity data under application of pressures up to ~26 GPa and down to 50 mK on YbFe 2 Zn 20 . We find a pressure induced magnetic phase transition with an onset at p c = 18.2±0.8 GPa. At ambient pressure, YbFe 2 Zn 20 manifests a heavy fermion, nonmagnetic ground state and the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. As pressure is increased, the power law exponent in resistivity, n, deviates significantly from Fermi liquid behavior and tends to saturate with n = 1 near p c . A pronounced resistivity maximum T max , which scales with the Kondo temperature, is observed. T max decreases with increasing pressure and flattened out near pc indicating the suppression of Kondo exchange interaction. For p > p c , T max shows a sudden upward shift, most likely becoming associated with crystal electric field scattering. Application of magnetic field for p > p c broadens the transition and shifts it toward the higher temperature, which is a typical behavior of a transition towards a ferromagnetic state, or a state with a significant ferromagnetic component. The magnetic transition appears to abruptly develop above pc, suggesting probable first-order (with changing pressure) nature of the transition; once stabilized, the ordering temperature does not depend on pressure up to ~26 GPa. Taken as a whole, these data suggest that YbFe 2 Zn 20 has a quantum phase transition at p c = 18.2 GPa associated with the avoided quantum criticality in metallic ferromagnets.

Bandwidth controlled insulator-metal transition in BaFe 2 S 3 : A Mössbauer study under pressure

BaFe 2 S 3 is a quasi one-dimensional Mott insulator that orders antiferromagnetically below 125 K. The application of pressure induces a transition to a metallic state, and superconductivity emerges. The evolution of the magnetic behavior on increasing pressure has up to now been either studied indirectly by means of transport measurements, or by using local magnetic probes only in the low pressure region. Here, we investigate the magnetic properties of BaFe 2 S 3 up to 9.9GPa by means of synchrotron 57 Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy experiments, providing the First local magnetic phase diagram. The magnetic ordering temperature increases up to 185(5) K at 7.5GPa, and is fully suppressed at 9.9GPa. The low-temperature magnetic hyperne field is continuously reduced from 12.9 to 10.3T between 1.4 and 9.1GPa, followed by a sudden drop to zero at 9.9GPa indicating a First-order phase transition. The pressure dependence of the magnetic order in BaFe2S3 can be qualitatively explained by a combination of a bandwidth-controlled insulator-metal transition as well as a pressure enhanced exchange interaction between Fe-atoms and Fe 3d-S 3p hybridization.

Relaxing Kondo-screened Kramers doublets in CeRhSi 3

${\mathrm{CeRhSi}}_{3}$ is a superconductor under pressure coexisting with a weakly antiferromagnetic phase characterized by a Bragg peak at q → 0 = (~ 0.2,0,0.5) [N. Aso et al., J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 310, 602 (2007)]. The compound is also a heavy-fermion material with a large specific heat coefficient ${\gamma}=110$ mJ ${\mathrm{mol}}^{{-}1}{\mathrm{K}}^{{-}2}$ and a high Kondo temperature of ${T}_{K}=50$ K, indicating ${\mathrm{CeRhSi}}_{3}$ is in a strongly Kondo screened state. We apply high-resolution neutron spectroscopy to investigate the magnetic fluctuations in the normal phase, at ambient pressures, and at low temperatures. We measure a commensurate dynamic response centered around the Q → = (0,0,2) position that gradually evolves to $H{\sim}0.2$ with decreasing temperature and/or energy transfers. The response is broadened both in momentum and energy and is not reminiscent of sharp spin wave excitations found in insulating magnets where the electrons are localized. We parametrize the excitation spectrum and temperature dependence using a heuristic model utilizing the random-phase approximation to couple relaxing ${\mathrm{Ce}}^{3+}$ ground-state Kramers doublets with a Kondo-like dynamic response. With a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida exchange interaction within the $ab$ plane and an increasing single-site susceptibility, we can qualitatively reproduce the neutron spectroscopic results in ${\mathrm{CeRhSi}}_{3}$ and, namely, the trade-off between scattering at commensurate and incommensurate positions. We suggest that the antiferromagnetic phase in ${\mathrm{CeRhSi}}_{3}$ is driven by weakly correlated relaxing localized Kramers doublets and that ${\mathrm{CeRhSi}}_{3}$ at ambient pressures is on the border between a Rudderman-Kittel-Yosida antiferromagnetic state and a Kondo-screened phase where static magnetism is predominately absent.

Comprehensive magnetic phase diagrams of the polar metal Ca 3 (Ru 0.95 Fe 0.05 ) 2 O 7

Polar metals exist as a rather unique class of materials as they combine two seemingly mutually exclusive properties (polar order and metallicity) in one system. So far only a few polar metals have been unambiguously identified; the magnetic ones are exceptionally rare. Here we investigate a 5% Fe-doped polar metal Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 , via electrical transport, magnetization, microstrain, and optical second-harmonic generation measurements. We report the full magnetic phase diagrams (in the field-temperature space) for magnetic field H∥a and H∥b, which exhibit distinct field-dependent magnetizations behavior. In particular, for H∥a we found a ferromagnetic incommensurate spin structure, which is absent in the pure Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 . Furthermore, we propose a microscopic spin model to understand this behavior, highlighting the role of Fe doping in tipping the delicate balance of the underlying exchange-interaction energy in this system.

Light mesons within the basis light-front quantization framework

In this work, we study the light-unflavored mesons as relativistic bound states in the nonperturbative Hamiltonian formalism of the basis light-front quantization approach. The dynamics for the valence quarks of these mesons is specified by an effective Hamiltonian containing the one-gluon exchange interaction and the confining potentials both introduced in our previous work on heavy quarkonia, supplemented additionally by a pseudoscalar contact interaction. We diagonalize this Hamiltonian in our basis function representation to obtain the mass spectrum and the light-front wave functions (LFWFs). Based on these LFWFs, we then study the structure of these mesons by computing the electromagnetic form factors, the decay constants, the parton distribution amplitudes, and the parton distribution functions. Our results are comparable to those from experiments and other theoretical models.

Reply to “Comment on ‘Quasielastic lepton scattering and back-to-back nucleons in the short-time approximation’ ”

We briefly review the concept of scaling and how it occurs in quasielastic electron and neutrino scattering from nuclei, and then the particular approach to scaling in the short-time approximation. We show that, while two-nucleon currents do significantly enhance the transverse electromagnetic response, they do not spoil scaling, but in fact enhance it. We provide scaling results obtained in the short-time approximation that verify this claim. The enhanced scaling is not 'accidental' as claimed in Ref. [1] but rather reflects the dominant role played by pion exchange interactions and currents in the quasielastic regime.

Composite octet baryons in a relativistic mean field description of nuclear and neutron star matter

Here, we examine the properties of composite octet baryons in the nuclear medium and neutron-star matter. The internal quark-diquark structure of the octet baryons and the equations of state of nuclear matter and neutron-star matter in the mean field approximation are described by using the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model as an effective quark theory of quantum chromodynamics. After introducing our model, we first discuss the properties of single baryons and their effective meson exchange interactions in symmetric nuclear matter by using concepts of Fermi-liquid theory. Several model-independent implications of this description are derived and illustrated by numerical results obtained in our model. Second, we extend the model description to high baryon densities and investigate the equation of state of neutron-star matter and the resulting star masses. We find that the so-called hyperon puzzle persists also for the case of composite hadrons. To get more information on this point, we also investigate the role of 6-Fermi and 8-Fermi interactions, in addition to the standard 4-Fermi interactions. The strengths of those higher-order Fermi interactions is determined so as not to spoil the saturation properties of nuclear matter. Among them, an interaction characterized by a product of four-quark current operators plays a special role to stabilize the stars over a large region of central baryon densities, although it has little effect on the maximum star masses.

Parton distribution functions of heavy mesons on the light front

The parton distribution functions (PDFs) of heavy mesons are evaluated from their light-front wave functions, which are obtained from a basis light-front quantization in the leading Fock sector representation. We consider the mass eigenstates from an effective Hamiltonian consisting of the confining potential adopted from light-front holography in the transverse direction, a longitudinal confinement, and a one-gluon exchange interaction with running coupling. In this work we present the gluon and the sea quark PDFs which we generate dynamically from the QCD evolution of the valence quark distributions.

Gravitational form factors of charmonia

We investigate the gravitational form factors of charmonium. Our method is based on a Hamiltonian formalism on the light front known as basis light-front quantization. The charmonium mass spectrum and light-front wave functions were obtained from diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian that incorporates confinement from holographic QCD and one-gluon exchange interaction from light-front QCD. We proposed a quantum many-body approach to construct the hadronic matrix elements of the energy momentum tensor T + + and T + − , which are used to extract the gravitational form factors A ( Q 2 ) and D ( Q 2 ) . The obtained form factors satisfy the known constraints, e.g., the von Laue condition. From these quantities, we also extract the energy, pressure and light-front energy distributions of the system. We find that hadrons are multilayer systems. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Gravitational form factors and mechanical properties of quarks in protons: A basis light-front quantization approach

We compute the gravitational form factors (GFFs) and study their applications for the description of the mechanical properties such as the pressure, shear force distributions, and the mechanical radius of the proton from its light-front wave functions (LFWFs) based on basis light-front quantization (BLFQ). The LFWFs of the proton are given by the lowest eigenvector of a light-front effective Hamiltonian that incorporates a three-dimensional confining potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling between the constituent quarks solved in the valence Fock sector. We find acceptable agreement between our BLFQ computations and the lattice QCD for the GFFs. Our D -term form factor also agrees well with the extracted data from the deeply virtual Compton scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab, and the results of different phenomenological models. The distributions of pressures and shear forces are similar to those from different models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Basis light-front quantization for the Λ b and Σ b baryons

Within the basis light-front quantization framework, we compute the masses and light-front wave functions of the Λ b baryon and its isospin triplet counterparts Σ b + , Σ b 0 , and Σ b − using a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the leading Fock sector. These wave functions are obtained as eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian, which incorporates the one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling and a three-dimensional confinement potential. With the quark masses and the couplings as adjustable parameters, the computed masses are set within the experimental range. The resulting predictions for their electromagnetic properties align well with other theoretical calculations. Additionally, the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of these baryons are obtained for the first time, with gluon and sea quark distributions dynamically generated through QCD evolution of the valence quark PDFs. Quarkonium as a relativistic bound state on the light front

We study charmonium and bottomonium as relativistic bound states in a light-front quantized Hamiltonian formalism. The effective Hamiltonian is based on light-front holography. We use a recently proposed longitudinal confinement to complete the soft-wall holographic potential for the heavy flavors. The spin structure is generated from the one-gluon exchange interaction with a running coupling. The adoption of asymptotic freedom improves the spectroscopy compared with previous light-front results. Within this model, we compute the mass spectroscopy, decay constants and the r.m.s. radii. We also present a detailed study of the obtained light-front wave functions and use the wave functions to compute the light-cone distributions, specifically the distribution amplitudes and parton distribution functions. Overall, our model provides a reasonable description of the heavy quarkonia.

B c mesons and their properties on the light front

We investigate the unequal-mass relativistic bound-state system, the B c mesons, in a light-front Hamiltonian formalism. We adopt an effective Hamiltonian based on soft-wall light-front holography, together with a longitudinal confinement that was first introduced for heavy quarkonium. We also include the one-gluon-exchange interaction with a running coupling, which produces the spin structure. Here, we present the mass spectrum and light-front wave functions. We also use the light-front wave functions to calculate decay constants, charge and momentum densities, as well as distribution amplitudes. The results are compared with experiments and other theoretical approaches, all of which are in reasonable agreement.

Topological Phases in Graphene Nanoribbons: Junction States, Spin Centers, and Quantum Spin Chains

We show that semiconducting graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) of different width, edge, and end termination (synthesizable from molecular precursors with atomic precision) belong to different electronic topological classes. The topological phase of GNRs is protected by spatial symmetries and dictated by the terminating unit cell. We have derived explicit formulas for their topological invariants and shown that localized junction states developed between two GNRs of distinct topology may be tuned by lateral junction geometry. The topology of a GNR can be further modified by dopants, such as a periodic array of boron atoms. In a superlattice consisting of segments of doped and pristine GNRs, the junction states are stable spin centers, forming a Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 chain with tunable exchange interaction. Furthermore, the discoveries here not only are of scientific interest for studies of quasi-one-dimensional systems, but also open a new path for design principles of future GNR-based devices through their topological characters.

Structural “ δ Doping” to Control Local Magnetization in Isovalent Oxide Heterostructures

Modulation and δ-doping strategies, in which atomically thin layers of charged dopants are precisely deposited within a heterostructure, have played enabling roles in the discovery of new physical behavior in electronic materials. Here in this paper, we demonstrate a purely structural “δ-doping” strategy in complex oxide heterostructures, in which atomically thin manganite layers are inserted into an isovalent manganite host, thereby modifying the local rotations of corner-connected MnO 6 octahedra. Combining scanning transmission electron microscopy, polarized neutron reflectometry, and density functional theory, we reveal how local magnetic exchange interactions are enhanced within the spatially confined regions of suppressed octahedral rotations. Finally, the combined experimental and theoretical results illustrate the potential to utilize noncharge-based approaches to “doping” in order to enhance or suppress functional properties within spatially confined regions of oxide heterostructures.

Nodeless High- T c Superconductivity in the Highly Overdoped CuO 2 Monolayer

We study the electronic structure and superconductivity in a CuO 2 monolayer grown recently on the d-wave cuprate superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ . Density functional theory calculations indicate a significant charge transfer across the interface such that the CuO 2 monolayer is heavily overdoped into the hole-rich regime yet inaccessible in bulk cuprates. We show that both the Cu d x 2 –y 2 and d 3z 2 –r 2 orbitals become important and the Fermi surface contains one electron and one hole pocket associated with the two orbitals, respectively. Constructing a minimal correlated two-orbital model for the e g complex, we show that the spin-orbital exchange interactions produce a nodeless superconductor with extended s-wave pairing symmetry and a pairing energy gap comparable to the bulk d-wave gap, in agreement with recent experiments. Here, the findings point to a direction of realizing new high-T c superconductors in ozone grown transition-metal-oxide monolayer heterostructures.

Possible Quantum Paramagnetism in Compressed Sr 2 IrO 4

The result of compression on the magnetic ground state of Sr 2 IrO 4 is studied with x-ray resonant techniques in the diamond anvil cell. The weak interlayer exchange coupling between square-planar 2D IrO 2 layers is easily modified upon compression, with a crossover between magnetic structures around 7 GPa mimicking the effect of an applied magnetic field at ambient pressure. Higher pressures drive an order-disorder magnetic phase transition with no magnetic order detected above 17–20 GPa. The persistence of strong exchange interactions between J eff = 1 / 2 magnetic moments within the insulating IrO 2 layers up to at least 35 GPa points to a highly frustrated magnetic state in compressed Sr 2 IrO 4 , opening the door for realization of novel quantum paramagnetic phases driven by extended 5 d orbitals with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Helimagnetic Structure and Heavy-Fermion-Like Behavior in the Vicinity of the Quantum Critical Point in Mn 3 P

Antiferromagnet Mn 3 P with Neel temperature T N =30 K is composed of Mn tetrahedrons and zigzag chains formed by three inequivalent Mn sites. Due to the nearly frustrated lattice with many short Mn-Mn bonds, competition of the exchange interactions is expected. We here investigate the magnetic structure and physical properties including pressure effect in single crystals of this material, and reveal a complex yet well-ordered helimagnetic structure. The itinerant character of this materials is strong, and the ordered state with small magnetic moments is easily suppressed under pressure, exhibiting a quantum critical point at ~1.6 GPa. The remarkable mass renormalization, even in the ordered state, and an incoherent-coherent crossover in the low-temperature region, characterize an unusual electronic state in Mn 3 P, which is most likely effected by the underlying frustration effect.
