Overview of National Laboratory Activities on Alternative Technologies
This presentation talks on the Critical experiments performed on the NCERC machines. Plutonium ( 239 Pu and 240 Pu), Highly Enriched Uranium, Low-Temperature (-40°C). This is all based on a simple design useful for modeling and validation. The design is made to incorporate materials of interest such as Tantalum, hafnium, lithium & more.
This report describes observations and suggestions from a workshop on needs for partnerships between national laboratories and universities in the AI era. The workshop took place over two days in March of 2024 at Texas A&M University’s Bush School of Government and Public Service Washington, D.C., teaching site. Through good fortune this happened to be at the peak of cherry blossom season and the weather was beautiful. In attendance were professors and leadership from universities across the nation, members of four national laboratories, and a representative of the Office of Critical and Emerging Technologies in Department of Energy (DOE). This group spanned a broad range of disciplines—applied mathematics, materials science, nuclear security, intelligence, and more. The workshop also had the benefit of insights from Charlie McMillan, former director of Los Alamos National Laboratory, and retired Air Force Lieutenant General Jack Shanahan, who led AI efforts at the Pentagon.
This data documentation report describes geologic and hydrologic laboratory analysis and data collected in support of site characterization of the Physical Experiment 1 (PE1) testbed, Aqueduct Mesa, Nevada. The documentation includes a summary of laboratory tests performed, discussion of sample selection for assessing heterogeneity of various testbed properties, methods, and results per data type.
Opacity-on-NIF has obtained opacity data under conditions similar to those achieved by the entirely different Opacity-on-Z platform. From low- and high-Z elements at different anchor points, rigorously compare the opacity data between the laboratories and to multiple opacity theory models. Compare and assess the data acquisition and processing methods for obtaining opacities and for measuring/inferring sample conditions. Explain, or develop hypotheses for, any discrepancies. Map progress to the National Opacity Strategy and define future directions.

A persistent environmental concern for the widespread deployment of tidal turbines is the potential for fish and marine mammals to collide with rotating blades (Copping et al. 2016, Copping and Hemery 2020). This is a consequence of well-documented bird and bat mortalities around wind turbines (Smallwood 2007, Thompson et al. 2017), as well as fish mortality at conventional hydropower dams (Pracheil et al. 2016) and tidal barrages (Dadswell and Rulifson 1994). However, unlike hydropower dams or barrages, tidal turbines do not involve structures that channel all flow through the turbines. Similarly, while functionally similar to wind turbines, tidal turbines often operate at lower relative velocities and, depending on the end-use application, may be significantly smaller than utility-scale wind turbines. Both of these factors reduce the likelihood and severity of collision, but the knowledge base on this topic remains limited.
The objectives for this task was to advance analysis and simulation capabilities for wave-WEC interactions and PTO analysis in nonlinear ocean waves. The improvements involve advancements in the generation of nonlinear wave time series and in nonlinear control strategies resulting in a detailed examination of WEC-wave interaction under scarcely-studied nonlinear conditions.

CEBAF delivers the world?s highest intensity and highest precision multi-GeV electron beams and has been do so for more than 25 years. In Fall 2017, with the completion of the 12 GeV upgrade and the start of the 12 GeV science program, a new era at the Laboratory began. The 12 GeV era is now well under way and many experimental results are delivered from the three Halls A, B, and C that receive electron beams. This talk will cover measurements of the J/? photo- and electroproduction cross section near threshold by different experiments in Halls B and C, the spectroscopy of strange and multi-strange baryons with the CLAS12 spectrometer in Hall B, and the rich program in hypernuclear physics that will get addressed by an extended measurement campaign in Hall C. Future equipment in Hall A (SoLID) will extend the J/? studies in photo- and electroproduction with increased luminosity and kinematic reach.
As an active star, the Sun frequently ejects large systems of magnetized plasma called Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs). When these ICMEs reach Earth, they cause geomagnetic storms, and, depending on their intensity, can wreak havoc on modern society [3]. In this project, we designed, executed, and diagnosed a proof-of-principle experiment aimed at studying ICMEs in a laboratory setting.
This project investigated the cooling delivery effectiveness of radiant ceiling panels as a function of attic insulation level using multiple laboratory testing and analytical methodologies. Delivery effectiveness is the heating or cooling energy delivered to a conditioned space divided by the total heating or cooling energy added or removed by the space conditioning system. The lower the losses of the heating or cooling delivery method, the higher the delivery effectiveness. For ducted systems, delivery effectiveness is reduced by both air leakage and thermal losses (especially if the ducts are installed in attics), while the delivery effectiveness of a radiant system supplied by hot and cold water is only reduced by thermal losses, which can be mitigated by sufficient insulation above, or at the "back" of the panel. Being installed at or below the ceiling plane, sufficient back insulation should be provided by default in the form of the attic insulation above the radiant ceiling panels. Site-built radiant ceiling panels were evaluated at Frontier Energy’s Building Science Research Laboratory (BSRL) in a uniquely designed environmental test chamber with independently controllable indoor and attic spaces and a height-adjustable ceiling.
In this work, coaxial direct ink writing is utilized to print sensitive or encapsulated materials onto heterogeneous and rough substrates. By enclosing the core fluid within a rigid ceramic shell, continuity is maintained even when printing on substrates traditionally considered challenging. This work presents the development of a coaxial ceramic direct ink writing system and investigates co-flow dynamics through microfluidic principles. A specially designed coaxial nozzle enables the co-extrusion of an alumina shell, with indium-tin-oxide inks serving as the core material. This approach allows the fabrication of core-shell ceramic structures suitable for future high-temperature applications on rough surfaces. The colloidal inks are tailored to achieve the necessary rheological properties and sintering performance. Additionally, flow simulations, guided by microfluidic co-flow principles, are employed to define the processing parameters for coaxial printing, ensuring precise control over the core-shell architectures. Physical modeling is further applied to study core deformation and eccentricity. These simulations are experimentally validated, supporting the successful deposition of coaxial ceramic features on heterogeneous, high-temperature ceramic substrates.
