Theoretical Investigation of Half-Metallic Ferromagnetism in Sodium-Based Fluoro-perovskite NaXF{sub 3} (X = V, Co)

We report on the structural, mechanical, magneto-electronic and thermodynamic properties of cubic sodium based fluoro-perovskite NaXF3 (X = V, Co) through density functional theory (DFT). The generalized gradient approximation of Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerh (GGA-PBE) and the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential (TB-mBJ) are used for modeling exchange-correlation effects. The calculated lattice parameters agree well with the experimental measurements. Elastic properties show that these compounds are mechanically stable. The results of spin-polarized band structure show a half metallic behavior of NaVF{sub 3} and NaCoF{sub 3}. The magnetic study shows that the nature of these compounds is ferromagnetic and the integer value of the total magnetic moment confirms the half metallicity for both materials. The thermodynamic characters are also investigated through quasi-harmonic approximation.

Magnetic, Mechanical, and Electronic Properties of RhH{sub x} (x = 0, 0.25, 0.75, 1) from First-Principles Calculations

The magnetic, mechanical, and electronic properties of RhH{sub x} (x = 0, 0.25, 0.75, 1) have been investigated by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. It is shown that RhH{sub x} (x = 0.25, 0.75, 1) in the cubic structure are magnetic except for Rh. The total magnetic moments of RhH{sub x} (x = 0.25, 0.75, 1) decrease with increasing content of H, which mainly results from the change of the Rh moments. The calculated elastic constants indicate that RhH{sub x} (x = 0, 0.25, 0.75, 1) in the cubic structure are mechanically stable. With increasing H content, the bulk modulus, shear modulus, and Young modulus gradually decrease except the bulk modulus of RhH. By means of the values of the B/G ratio, it is concluded that H doping improves the ductile properties of Rh. The strong hybridization between H-s and Rh-d is the origin of magnetism for RhH{sub x} (x = 0.25, 0.75, 1) and decreases with increasing H content.

A Density Functional Theory Investigations of Half-Heusler Compounds RhVZ (Z = P, As, Sb)

We have studied the half-Heusler compounds RhVZ (Z = P, As, Sb) using Density Functional Theory (DFT). The method of the Full Potential Linearly Augmented Plane Wave (FP-LAPW) is employed in the Wien2k package for calculation of structural, elastic, mechanical, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties. Lattice constants are found in the range 5.67 − 5.80 Å. Analysis of elastic properties shows that two of the compounds namely RhVP and RhVAs are ductile while RhVSb is brittle in nature. All three compounds are half-metals as revealed from the band structures and Density of States (DoS) calculations. In all of them, spin-down channels have the small band gaps, while spin-up channels are conducting. These compounds follow the Slater-Pauling 18 (M{sub Tot} = Z{sub Tot} − 18) electron rule with the total magnetic moments in the range 1 − 2 μ{sub B}. Optical properties like dielectric function, refractive index, reflectivity, conductivity, and absorption coefficient are calculated and discussed.

Robust Half-Metallicity in Quaternary Heusler Compounds KSrNZ (Z = O, S, and Se)

The first principle calculations based on density functional theory using full potential linearized augmented plane wave method was performed on the quaternary Heusler alloys KSrNZ (Z = O, S, and Se). Studies on structural properties showed that quaternary Heusler alloys KSrNZ (Z = O, S, and Se) were stable in Y{sub I}-type structure. Furthermore, values of formation energies confirmed that these alloys may be synthesized experimentally. Verification of electronic properties resulted that KSrNO, KSrNS, and KSrNSe compounds were half-metals at equilibrium lattice constants with majority band gaps of 4.61, 3.82, and 3.51 eV, respectively. KSrNZ (Z = O, S, and Se) compounds maintained half-metallic behavior in relatively wide ranges of lattice constant under uniform strain distortion. This indicates that these compounds are promising materials for future spintronic applications. Furthermore, the origin of half-metallic characteristic was verified using electronic density of states. Calculations of magnetic properties showed that the total magnetic moments of KSrNZ (Z = O, S, and Se) were obtained equal to 2 μ{sub B} satisfying the famous Slater-Pauling rule (M{sub tot}= 12-Z{sub tot}).

Magnetic Properties of Vacancies and Doped Chromium in a ZnO Crystal

The electronic and magnetic properties of ZnO containing Cr doped atoms and Zn and O vacancies in its crystal structure are theoretically investigated. Calculations are performed using Atomistix Tool Kit and Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package software implementing the electron density functional theory method with the Hubbard correction. It is shown that the magnetic moment of a defect supercell strongly depends on the impurity concentration and presence of vacancies. The doping of an oxygen atom increases the probability of zinc-vacancy formation.

Linear magnetoresistance induced by intra-scattering semiclassics of Bloch electrons

Weak-field magnetoresistance has seen a revived interest due to the distinct role played by the momentum-space Berry curvature of Bloch electrons. While most previous studies in this regard focus on the inter-scattering motion of semiclassical Bloch electrons in electromagnetic fields, the intra-scattering effects of the semiclassical dynamics augmented by the Berry curvature, magnetic moment, and shift vector on the magnetoresistance have been largely overlooked. Here, we uncover that these intra-scattering effects, which are neglected in the field-independent relaxation time approximation to the Boltzmann collision integral, can be as important as the inter-scattering ones. In this work, concrete calculations on the two-dimensional gapped Dirac model show that the sign of the negative linear magnetoresistance given by the Berry curvature alone is reversed when one considers the magnetic moment and shift vector.

Controlling Magnetism of F-Adsorbed BN Nanosheets by Applying Isotropic Strain

Magnetic properties of the h-BN monolayer with nonmetal atoms adsorbed are studied by the first-principle methods. Different dopants (C, Cl, F, and O) and adsorption sites are considered. On one hand, magnetic behavior is observed in two-dimensional (2D) BN system with C, Cl, and O atoms and nonmagnetic state is shown in the F-adsorbed system. On the other hand, the F-adsorbed system shows a more stable formed structure among all the systems. Thus, we study the magnetic properties in F-adsorbed 2D-BN system under the applied tensile and compressive strain. Interestingly, as the strain increases, a maximum magnetic moment of 1.12 μ{sub B} is observed, which originates from the p-p hybridization among F, B, and N atoms. Our results suggest some potential applications of the F-adsorbed BN nanosheet.

Computational Research of Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Nonmetal Doping of Graphene-Like ZnO Monolayer

In this paper, the geometrical, electronic, and magnetic properties of nonmetal (B, C, N, F, Si, P, or S) atom doping of g-ZnO monolayer supercell have been comprehensively calculated using the first-principle method. The structural optimization implies that nonmetal atom doping of g-ZnO monolayer leads to the structural distortion around the doping atoms compared with pure g-ZnO sheet. We find that g-ZnO monolayer with one O atom per supercell substituted by one B or C atom is ferromagnetic half metal, and that substituted by one N, Si, or P atom exhibits a ferromagnetic semiconductor feature, while that substituted by one F or S atom appears to be nonmagnetic semiconductor. The total magnetic moments mainly originates from the spin polarization of the doping atom (B, C, N, Si, and P), and the rest comes from the nearest Zn and O atoms.

Non-universal SUSY models, $g_\mu -2$, $m_H$ and dark matter

We study the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, g μ – 2 ≡ 2a μ , in the context of supersymmetric models beyond the CMSSM, where the unification of either the gaugino masses M 1,2,3 or sfermion and Higgs masses is relaxed, taking into account the measured mass of the Higgs boson, m H , the cosmological dark matter density and the direct detection rate. We find that the model with non-unified gaugino masses can make a contribution Δa μ ~ 20 x 10 –10 to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, for example if M 1,2 ~ 600 GeV and M 3 ~ 8 TeV. The model with non-universal sfermion and Higgs masses can provide even larger Δa μ ~ 24 x 10 –10 if the sfermion masses for the first and the second generations are ~400 GeV and that of the third is ~8 TeV. We discuss the prospects for collider searches for supersymmetric particles in specific benchmark scenarios illustrating these possibilities, focusing in particular on the prospects for detecting the lighter smuon and the lightest neutralino.

Size Dependences of the Magnetic Properties of Superconducting Lead–Porous Glass Nanostructures

Superconducting structures Pb–PG formed by filling a porous glass matrix with the lead from melt under pressure have been investigated. Samples with characteristic pore structure diameters of d ≈ 7, 3, and 2 nm have been studied. It has been found that the critical temperature of the superconducting transition in the samples under study is similar to the corresponding value T{sub c} ≈ 7.2 K for bulk lead. At the same time, it has been observed that the critical magnetic field of the nanocomposites, which attains H{sub c}(T = 0 K) ≈ 165 kOe for Pb–PG (3 nm), exceeds several times the value H{sub c}(0) = 803 Oe for bulk lead. The low-temperature magnetic- field dependences of magnetic moment M(H) contain quasi-periodic flux jumps, which vanish with a decrease in the lead nanostructure diameter. A qualitative model of the observed effects is considered.

First-Principle Study of Half-Metallic Ferrimagnet Behavior in Titanium-Based Heusler Alloys Ti{sub 2}FeZ (Z = Al, Ga, and In)

Using density functional theory with the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method (FP-LAPW), we have study the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Ti{sub 2}FeZ (Z = Al, Ga, and In) alloys with Hg{sub 2}CuTi-type structure. The magnetic stabilities reveal that all our compounds exhibit ferrimagnetic (FiM) behaviors. The electronic structure report the existence of a gap energy equal to 0.56, 0.60, and 0.64 eV for Ti{sub 2}FeAl, Ti{sub 2}FeGa, and Ti{sub 2}FeIn, respectively, in the spin-down state and divulge metallic intersections at the Fermi level for the spin-up state. These results indicate that our compounds have a half-metallic (HM) nature. In addition to this, the total magnetic moments are in agreement with the obtained one by the Slater-Pauling rule (M{sub tot} = Z{sub tot} − 18), which indicates the 100% spin polarization for these compounds.

Ab Initio Calculations of New Full Heusler Alloys Rh{sub 2}ZrX (X = Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn)

In recent years, Heusler alloys have attracted extensive attention because of their usefulness in spintronic devices. In this paper, the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of full Heusler alloys Rh{sub 2}ZrX (X = Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn) have been studied using Quantum Espresso software package based on density functional theory. Calculations have been done by GGA and GGA+U methods. The investigations on the structural properties of the alloys showed that the Rh{sub 2}ZrSi alloy had the most stable structure (E{sub coh} = − 1.807 eV) among the six compounds reviewed. The results of GGA calculation on electronic properties of Rh{sub 2}ZrX alloys show that while the Rh{sub 2}ZrX (X = Al, Ga, In) alloys had metallic nature due to overlapping between conduction and valance band at Fermi level for both spin directions, the Rh{sub 2}ZrX (X = Si, Ge, Sn) alloys had half-metal characteristic. Also, Rh{sub 2}ZrSi and Rh{sub 2}ZrGe alloys had 100% spin polarization. By studying the magnetic properties, it was found that the Rh{sub 2}ZrAl and Rh{sub 2}ZrSi alloys were antiferromagnetic, while the Rh{sub 2}ZrGa, Rh{sub 2}ZrIn, Rh{sub 2}ZrGe, and Rh{sub 2}ZrSn alloys were ferromagnetic materials. Also, the total spin magnetic moment of alloys was found in accordance with the Slater-Pauling rule. The results obtained using GGA+U calculation are slightly different from the results of GGA calculation.

Magnetic Properties of Iron-Doped Bi{sub 2}Se{sub 3}, a Topological Insulator

We study the dc magnetization of a Bi{sub 1.94}Fe{sub 0.06}Se{sub 3} single crystal in the temperature range of 1.9 to 400 K in applied magnetic fields up to 70 kOe for two sample orientations in the applied field. We register three magnetic phase transitions and observe considerable anisotropy of the magnetic properties. The coercive force varies with temperature in a nonmonotonic manner. For the sample in a paramagnetic state, we estimate its magnetic moment per iron atom; its Curie–Weiss temperature is found to be negative. Arrot–Belov plots are constructed.

Direct detection of light dark matter charged under a 𝐿 𝜇 − 𝐿 𝜏 symmetry

A possible extension of the Standard Model able to explain the recent measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon consists in adding a gauged 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐿𝜇−𝐿𝜏 symmetry. If the dark matter particle is charged under this symmetry, then the kinetic mixing between the new gauge boson and the photon induces dark matter-electron interactions. We derive direct detection constraints on light dark matter charged under a 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐿𝜇−𝐿𝜏 symmetry with electron recoil experiments and explore prospects with XLZD and OSCURA to close in the parameter space able to explain simultaneously the recent measurement on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the observed relic density of dark matter. We further discuss the spin-dependent scattering contribution arising in this model, which was ignored previously in the literature.

Ubiquity of amplitude-modulated magnetic ordering in the H - T phase diagram of the frustrated non-Fermi-liquid YbAgGe

YbAgGe contains a magnetic geometrically frustrated kagome-like lattice that also features significant local single-ion anisotropy. The electronic state is established by hybridization of 4f and conduction electrons leading to heavy electronic masses. The competition between these various interactions leads to nontrivial behavior under external magnetic field, including a sequence of magnetic phase transitions, non-Fermi-liquid states, and possibly a quantum critical point. We present a series of neutron diffraction experiments performed in the mK temperature range and under magnetic fields up to 8 T in the hexagonal plane, revealing the microscopic nature of the first four subsequent magnetic states of this phase diagram. The magnetic phases are associated with the propagation vectors K 1 =($\frac{1}{3}$ 0 $\frac{1}{3}$) for H < 2 T, K 2 = (0 0 0.32) for 2 T < H < 3 T, K 1 = ($\frac{1}{3}$ 0 $\frac{1}{3}$) for 3 T < H < 4.5 T and k 3 = (0.195 0.195 0.38) for 4.5 T < H < 7 T. Our structural refinements reveal a strong modulation of the magnetic moment amplitude in all phases. We observe that the ordered moments of the three magnetically different Yb sites become increasingly different in field, which complies with the principle local anisotropy directions relative to the field direction. While the ordered moments are aligned predominantly in the hexagonal plane, we also find a significant out-of-plane component and a ferromagnetic contribution above 2 T. Here we discuss possible scenarios that may evolve around the phase boundary at 4.5 T, which is associated with putative quantum criticality as identified by various bulk probes. We propose further steps that are required to better understand the microscopic interactions in this material.

Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of new γ-Ba(CoV{sub 1-x}P{sub x}O{sub 4}){sub 2} x = 0.4–0.5

The phase composition of the system BaCo{sub 2}(VO{sub 4}){sub 2}–Ba(CoPO{sub 4}){sub 2} has been studied. At room temperature two miscibility gaps have been detected, with the formation of substitutional solid solutions Ba(CoV{sub 1-x}P{sub x}O{sub 4}){sub 2} for x = 0.4–0.5 basing on the γ-BCPO structure type. An increase in the vanadium cation concentration leads to the stabilization of the rhombohedral crystal lattice. The crystallographic characteristics of two new phosphate - vanadates Ba(CoV{sub 0.5}P{sub 0.5}O{sub 4}){sub 2} and Ba(CoV{sub 0.6}P{sub 0.4}O{sub 4}){sub 2} isostructural to γ-BCPO have been obtained, their crystal structures have been described, and their magnetic properties have been analyzed. It was shown that in α-BCPO, as distinct from other examined phases, a three-dimensional ferromagnetic ordering characterized by a wide hysteresis loop takes place at low temperatures. The enhanced values of the magnetic moment in the paramagnetic phase BaCo{sub 2}(VO{sub 4}){sub 2} and solid solutions based on γ-BCPO are attributed to the peculiarities of the crystal environment.

The Electronic Structures and Ferromagnetism of Cu-Doped ZnO: the First-Principle Calculation Study

We have carried out first-principle spin-polarized calculations to investigate the electronic structures and the magnetic properties of Cu-doped wurtzite ZnO. It was found that the Cu{sub Zn} substitution can introduce 1 μ{sub B} local magnetic moment into the doped system, whereas the ferromagnetic coupling between Cu{sub Zn}s is so weak that the system cannot keep ferromagnetism at higher temperature. In Zn vacancy (V{sub Zn}) and Cu{sub Zn} coexisted system, Cu is in the Cu {sup 2+}/Cu {sup 3+} mixed valence under the influence of acceptor defect V{sub Zn}. Cu-3d electrons couple with O(around V{sub Zn})-sp electrons and then form Cu{sup 2+} −V{sub Zn} −Cu{sup 2+} or Cu{sup 2+} −VZn−−Cu{sup 3+} bound magnetic polaron (BMP) in the range of 1.27 ∼ 1.90 nm. The overlapping between BMPs is the main ferromagnetism origin of ZnO/Cu. According to our analysis, we thought that ZnO/Cu system will display stronger ferromagnetism when the Cu concentration attains 3% in atomic percentage. The calculated results and analysis will shed light on the origin of ferromagnetism in ZnO/Cu.

Density Functional Study of Half-Metallic Ferromagnetism in the New Heusler Compounds CaYO{sub 2} (Y = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn)

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of full-Heusler alloys CaYO{sub 2} (Y = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) were investigated using full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method based on density functional theory. It was confirmed that these compounds can be synthesized experimentally due to their negative formation energies. The results predicted that all compounds in AlCu{sub 2}Mn-type structure were more stable than CuHg{sub 2}Ti-type structure. The band structure calculations showed that alloys CaYO{sub 2} (Y = Cr, Fe, Ni, and Cu) in AlCu{sub 2}Mn-type structure and CaYO{sub 2} (Y = Ti, V, Cr, Co, and Ni) in CuHg{sub 2}Ti-type structure have half metallic behavior. The origin of half-metallic characteristic was investigated using electronic density of states for CaFeO{sub 2}. Among these alloys, CaCrO{sub 2} was half-metal in a wide range of lattice constants indicating its resistance against destructive factors of half-metallicity such as temperature and pressure. The total magnetic moments for half-metallic alloys were integer values and obeyed the Slater-Pauling rules. The CaYO{sub 2} alloys with half-metallic character may be good candidates for practical applications in spintronics.
