LTA structures and materials technology

The state-of-the-art concerning structures and materials technology is reviewed. It is shown that many present materials developments resulting from balloon and aircraft research programs can be applied to new concepts in LTA vehicles. Both buoyant and semi-buoyant vehicles will utilize similar approaches to solving structural problems and could involve pressurized non-rigid and unpressurized rigid structures. System designs common to both and vital to structural integrity will include much of the past technology as well. Further research is needed in determination of structural loads, especially in future design concepts.

Guidelines for the planning and preparation of illustrated technical talks

Guidelines are presented for the preparation of illustrated talks which are audience oriented and which are aimed at the efficient transfer of technical information. Early decisions concerning the required number of slides are helpful in initial planning for a good quality talk. Detailed considerations are: the establishment of limited objectives, selection of appropriate slide material, development of a text which is well coordinated with the slides, and accurate timing.

Multi-Fiber Composites

Resin matrix composites having improved resistance to foreign object damage in gas turbine engine fan blade applications were developed. Materials evaluated include epoxy matrix graphite/glass and boron/glass hybrids, thermoplastic matrix boron/glass hybrids, and superhybrids consisting of graphite/epoxy, boron/aluminum, and titanium alloy sheets. Static, pendulum impact, and ballistic impact test results are reported for all materials. Superhybrid blade like specimens are shown to be capable of withstanding relatively severe ballistic impacts from gelatin spheres without fracture. The effects of ply configuration and projectile angle of incidence on impact behavior are described. Predictions of surface strains during ballistic impact are presented and shown to be in reasonable agreement with experimental measurements.

Disseminating technological information on remote sensing to potential users

The Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing developed materials and programs which range from short tutorial brochures to post-doctoral research programs which may span several years. To organize both the content and the instructional techniques, a matrix of instructional materials was conceptualized. Each row in the matrix represents a subject area in remote sensing and each column in the matrix represents a different type media or instructional strategy.

Design, analysis, fabrication and test of the Space Shuttle solid rocket booster motor case

The motor case used in the solid propellant booster for the Space Shuttle is unique in many respects, most of which are indigenous to size and special design requirements. The evolution of the case design from initial requirements to finished product is discussed, with increased emphasis of reuse capability, special design features, fracture mechanics and corrosion control. Case fabrication history and the resulting procedure are briefly reviewed with respect to material development, processing techniques and special problem areas. Case assembly, behavior and performance during the DM-1 static firing are reviewed, with appropriate comments and conclusions.

High current lightning test of space shuttle external tank lightning protection system

During lift-off, the shuttle launch vehicle (external tank, solid rocket booster and orbiter) may be subjected to a lightning strike. Tests of a proposed lightning protection method for the external tank and development materials which were subjected to simulated lightning strikes are described. Results show that certain of the high resistant paint strips performed remarkably well in diverting the 50 kA lightning strikes.

Space environmental interactions with spacecraft surfaces

The employment of large structures in space, which would be necessary in connection with a number of space missions and space activities currently being contemplated, might involve special problems as a result of the interactions of the structures with the charged particle environment. Such interactions would be particularly significant in the case of high operational voltages. A review is presented of possible interactions between spacecraft surfaces and charged-particle environments. The categories of spacecraft-environmental interactions are examined and a description of spacecraft charging interactions is presented. The status of charging investigation is considered, taking into account the environment, aspects of analytical modeling, materials characterization, materials development, space flight experiments, and design guidelines. High voltage surface-plasma interactions are also investigated.

Storage, transmission and distribution of hydrogen

Current practices and future requirements for the storage, transmission and distribution of hydrogen are reviewed in order to identify inadequacies to be corrected before hydrogen can achieve its full potential as a substitute for fossil fuels. Consideration is given to the storage of hydrogen in underground solution-mined salt caverns, portable high-pressure containers and dewars, pressure vessels and aquifers and as metal hydrides, hydrogen transmission in evacuated double-walled insulated containers and by pipeline, and distribution by truck and internal distribution networks. Areas for the improvement of these techniques are indicated, and these technological deficiencies, including materials development, low-cost storage and transmission methods, low-cost, long-life metal hydrides and novel methods for hydrogen storage, are presented as challenges for research and development.

Theoretical studies of solar-pumped lasers

Estimates of the absorption and emission characteristics of molecules required to develop materials for solar-pumped lasers are addressed. These characteristics are described in terms of the Franck Condon factors, which are calculated from the molecular wave functions. Wave functions for vibrational levels in the lower and upper electronic states of I2 and NSe are calculated numerically and methods of checking errors discussed. Errors arise when the vibrational quantum numbers are high; but, using a calculated rather than measured value of the dissociation energy, wave functions up to the fiftieth vibrational level are obtained. A numerical method of evaluating the wave functions is given, which should be more accurate in the region of electronic transitions during absorption. Franck Condon factors, plotted versus the wavelength of the absorbed photons, are shown, and a check on the Franck Condon factors is made using the vibrational sum rule.

The composing process in technical communications

The theoretical construct under which technical writing exercises operate and results from a survey distributed to a random sample of teachers of technical writing are described. The survey, part of a study to develop materials that did not stress prescriptive formats, drew on diverse elements in report writing to enhance writing as a process. Areas of agreement and disagreement related to problem solving, paper evaluation, and individualizing instruction were surveyed. Areas of concern in contemplating the composition process include: (1) the need to create an environment that helps students want to succeed, (2) the role of peer group activity in helping some students who might not respond through lecture or individual study, and (3) encouraging growth in abilities and helping motivate students' interest in writing projects through relevant assignments or simulations students perceive as relevant.
