Design and development of pressure and repressurization purge system for reusable space shuttle multilayer insulation system

Preliminary design and analysis of purge system concepts and purge subsystem approaches are defined and evaluated. Acceptable purge subsystem approaches were combined into four predesign layouts which are presented for comparison and evaluation. Two predesigns were selected for further detailed design and evaluation for eventual selection of the best design for a full scale test configuration. An operation plan is included as an appendix for reference to shuttle-oriented operational parameters.

Multilayer flat electrical cable

Flat electrical cable is lightweight, flexible over wide temperature range, withstands continuous exposure to high levels of nuclear radiation, and can carry high currents with minimum of temperature rise. Its magnetic cleanliness is equal to or better than twisted pair of wires, and it can be terminated in conventional electrical connector.

Design and development of pressure and repressurization purge system for reusable space shuttle multilayer insulation system

The experimental determination of purge bag materials properties, development of purge bag manufacturing techniques, experimental evaluation of a subscale purge bag under simulated operating conditions and the experimental evaluation of the purge pin concept for MLI purging are discussed. The basic purge bag material, epoxy fiberglass bounded by skins of FEP Teflon, showed no significant permeability to helium flow under normal operating conditions. Purge bag small scale manufacturing tests were conducted to develop tooling and fabrication techniques for use in full scale bag manufacture. A purge bag material layup technique was developed whereby the two plys of epoxy fiberglass enclosed between skins of FEP Teflon are vacuum bag cured in an oven in a single operation. The material is cured on a tool with the shape of a purge bag half. Plastic tooling was selected for use in bag fabrication. A model purge bag 0.6 m in diameter was fabricated and subjected to a series of structural and environmental tests simulating various flight type environments. Pressure cycling tests at high (450 K) and low (200 K) temperature as well as acoustic loading tests were performed. The purge bag concept proved to be structurally sound and was used for the full scale bag detailed design model.

Acoustic impedance of curved multilayered duct liners

The effect of curvature of annular duct liners on the liner acoustic impedance is examined. Exact equations are derived for the impedance of point reacting liners which are made from an arbitrary number of thin cylindrical layers of porous material separated by small radially oriented cells. Equations are given for liners with convex curvature and for liners with concave curvature. For ducts with small curvature, it is shown that these equations reduce to the equations for a flat liner. It is shown, by analytical and numerical examples, that the effect of liner curvature is significant in practical noise reduction problems.

Properties of multilayer filters

New methods were investigated of using optical interference coatings to produce bandpass filters for the spectral region 110 nm to 200 nm. The types of filter are: triple cavity metal dielectric filters; all dielectric reflection filters; and all dielectric Fabry Perot type filters. The latter two types use thorium fluoride and either cryolite films or magnesium fluoride films in the stacks. The optical properties of the thorium fluoride were also measured.

Basic performance of a multilayer insulation system containing 20 to 160 layers

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the thermal effectiveness of an aluminized Mylar-silk net insulation system containing up to 160 layers. The experimentally measured heat flux was compared with results predicted by using (1) a previously developed semi-empirical equation and (2) an effective-thermal-conductivity value. All tests were conducted at a nominal hot-boundary temperature of 294 K (530 R) with liquid hydrogen as the heat sink. The experimental results show that the insulation performed as expected and that both the semi-empirical equation and effective thermal conductivity of a small number of layers were adequate in predicting the thermal performance of a large number of layers of insulation.

Acoustic wave transmission through multilayer layer

Acoustic wave transmission through several media extended to infinity is studied by analyzing the factors influencing transmission, and by determining the conditions under which acoustic energy is transmitted integrally.

Scattering of light in a spherical multilayer atmosphere

The problem of radiation diffusion in the atmosphere of a planet illuminated by solar rays was examined. The basic equations of the problem were obtained and the solution was found for the case when the absorption coefficient in the atmosphere is constant. The assumption was introduced of exponential variation of absorptivity with altitude, and a first approximation solution was proposed.

Thermal performance of a customized multilayer insulation (MLI)

The thermal performance of a LH2 tank on a shroudless vehicle was investigated. The 1.52 m (60 in) tank was insulated with 2 MLI blankets consisting of 18 double aluminized Mylar radiation shields and 19 silk net spacers. The temperature of outer space was simulated by using a cryoshroud which was maintained at near liquid hydrogen temperature. The heating effects of a payload were simulated by utilizing a thermal payload simulator (TPS) viewing the tank. The test program consisted of three major test categories: (1) null testing, (2) thermal performance testing of the tank installed MLI system, and (3) thermal testing of a customized MLI configuration. TPS surface temperatures during the null test were maintained at near hydrogen temperature and during test categories 2 and 3 at 289 K (520R). The heat flow rate through the tank installed MLI at a tank/TPS spacing of 0.457 m was 1.204 watts with no MLI on the TPS and 0.059 watts through the customized MLI with three blankets on the TPS. Reducing the tank/TPS spacing from 0.457 m to 0.152 m the heat flow through the customized MLI increased by 10 percent.

Thermal performance of a modularized replaceable multilayer insulation system for a cryogenic stage

A rugged modularized MLI system for a 2.23-meter-diameter (87.6-in.-diam) liquid hydrogen tank was designed, fabricated, and tested under simulated near-earth and deep-space environments. The two blankets of the system were each composed of 17 double-aluminized Mylar radiation shields separated by silk net. The unit area weight of the installed system was 1.54 kg/sqm (0.32 lb/sq ft). The overall average heat transferred into the insulated tank was 22.7 and 0.98 watts (77.4 and 3.3 Btu/hr) during simulated near-earth and deep-space testing, respectively. The near-earth result was only 2.6 times that predicted for an undisturbed insulation system (i.e., no seams or penetrations). Tests indicate that this insulation concept could be useful for a cryogenic space tug or orbit transfer vehicle application.

Laser drilling of vias in dielectric for high density multilayer LSHI thick film circuits

A design analysis of a high density multilevel thick film digital microcircuit used for large scale integration is presented. The circuit employs 4 mil lines, 4 mil spaces and requires 4 mil diameter vias. Present screened and fired thick film technology is limited on a production basis to 16 mil square vias. A process whereby 4 mil diameter vias can be fabricated in production using laser technology was described along with a process to produce 4 mil diameter vias for conductor patterns which have 4 mil lines and 4 mil spacings.

The effect of changes in space shuttle parameters on the NASA/MSFC multilayer diffusion model predictions of surface HCl concentrations

A method for formulating these changes into the model input parameters using a preprocessor program run on a programed data processor was implemented. The results indicate that any changes in the input parameters are small enough to be negligible in comparison to meteorological inputs and the limitations of the model and that such changes will not substantially increase the number of meteorological cases for which the model will predict surface hydrogen chloride concentrations exceeding public safety levels.
