Ca 2 MnO 4 structural path: Following the negative thermal expansion at the local scale

The oxygen octahedral rotations in Ca 2 MnO 4 , the first member of the CaO(CaMnO 3 )n Ruddlesden-Popper family, is probed through a set of complementary techniques, including temperature-dependent neutron and x-ray diffraction, combined with local probe studies and ab initio calculations. Here we demonstrate the enhancement of the uniaxial negative thermal expansion coefficient from -1.26 ± 0.25 to -21 ± 1.8 ppm/K at the second order I4 1 /acd to I4/mmm structural phase transition, providing direct evidence for the corkscrew atomic mechanism. We establish, also, that the predicted I4/mmm high symmetry is attained around 1050 K. At lower temperatures, within the 10–1000 K temperature range, our first-principles calculations and detailed analysis of the Ca local environment reveals that the reported Aba2 structural phase, coexisting with the I4 1 /acd one, cannot describe correctly this compound. On the other hand, our data allow for the coexistence of the locally identical I4 1 /acd and Acam structural phases.

Tunning the linkage of structure units to enable stable spinel-based cathode in the wide potential window

The low practical capacity (<140 mA h g –1 ) of spinel phase LiMn 2–x Ni x O 4 (0 < x < 1) excludes it from high energy density lithium ion batteries (LIBs) for powering electric vehicles. Extending the operating potential window from 3.0 to 4.8 V to 2.0–4.8 V can double the capacity, but result in fast capacity decay due to the drastic cubic-tetragonal phase transition below 3.0 V, induced by serious Jahn-Teller (J-T) distortion of structure units (Mn 3+ )O 6 octahedra. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to suppress J-T distortion by tuning the linkage of structure units MnO 6 octahedra. The original full-vertex-sharing LiO 4 tetrahedra around MnO 6 octahedra in spinel phase are partially replaced by edge-sharing LiO 6 octahedra, which relate Mn-O bonds along the dz 2 direction with those along the d xy plane, thus significantly mitigating J-T distortion and suppressing the phase transition when discharged to 2.0 V. Following this strategy, the prepared spinel-based cathode achieves a high reversible capacity of about 290 mA h g –1 and an energy density up to 957 W h kg –1 with improved cycling stability. Furthermore, this work finds a new opportunity for the traditional spinel cathode towards applications in high energy density LIBs in a low cost and sustainable manner.

Atomic scale investigation of aluminum incorporation, defects, and phase stability in β -(Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 films

The development of novel ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) materials requires precise understanding of the atomic level structural origins that give rise to their important properties. We study the aluminum atom incorporation, defect formation, and their relationships with phase stability in β-(Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 films, a promising candidate for UWBG applications, to explain atomic scale structural characteristics and properties using a combination of quantitative scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and density functional theory (DFT). Our STEM analysis indicates that ~54% of the incorporated Al substitutes on the octahedrally coordinated Ga 2 site in a series of films grown with different techniques and alloy concentrations. DFT calculations show that, while Al energetically prefers the octahedral site, surface reconstructions and kinetic limitations during the epitaxial growth are responsible for Al occupying both octahedral and tetrahedral sites in (Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 , ultimately limiting the stability of the β-phase at x < ~50%. Local heterogeneity of composition results in the formation of a planar defect, affecting the stability of the β-phase. The similarity of such inclusions to the metastable γ-phase is discussed.

High-Pressure Equation of State of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene: Insights into the Monoclinic Phase Transition, Hydrogen Bonding, and Anharmonicity

The high-pressure equation of state (EOS) of energetic materials (EMs) is important for continuum and mesoscale models of detonation performance and initiation safety. Additionally, obtaining a high-fidelity EOS of the insensitive EM 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) has proven to be difficult because of challenges in experimental characterization at high pressures (HPs). In this work, powder X-ray diffraction patterns were fitted using the recently discovered monoclinic I2/a phase above 4 GPa, which shows that TATB is less compressible than when indexed with the triclinic $P\bar{1}$ phase. First-principles calculations were performed with Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) and PBE0 functionals including thermal effects using the $P\bar{1}$ phase. PBE0 improves the description of hydrogen bonding and thus predicts accurate planar a and b lattice parameters under ambient conditions. However, discrepancies in the predicted lattice parameters above 4–10 GPa compared with experimental measurements indexed with $P\bar{1}$ are further evidence of a structural modification at high pressure. Layer sliding defects are formed during molecular dynamics simulations, which induces an anharmonic effect on the thermal expansion of the c lattice parameter. In short, the results provide several insights into determining high-fidelity EOS parameters for TATB and other molecular crystals.

Electron-Deficient Phenazines: Synthesis, Structures, Redox, and Optoelectronic Properties in the Gas Phase, in Solution, and in the Solid State

High-temperature gas-phase reactions of 1,4-C4F8I2 with phenazine (PHNZ) afforded new thermally- and air-stable derivatives with cyclo-C4F8 substituents, viz. 1,2-PHNZ(C4F8), 2,3-PHNZ(C4F8), 1,2:6,7-PHNZ(C4F8)2, 1,2:7,8-PHNZ(C4F8)2, and 1,2:8,9-PHNZ(C4F8)2. Reactions in the presence of Cu powder resulted in reductive-defluorination/aromatization of some of the cyclo-C4F8 substituents to produce 2,3-PHNZ(C4F4), 2,3-PHNZ(C4HF3), and 1,2:6,7-PHNZ(C4F8)(C4F4), which are formally tri- or tetrafluoro derivatives of benzo[a]phenazine. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction structures of these compounds demonstrate the planarity of 2,3-PHNZ(C4F4) and 2,3-PHNZ(C4HF3) and ordered p-stacking in 1,2-PHNZ(C4HF3), 1,2-PHNZ(C4F4), 1,2-PHNZ(C4F8), and 2,3-PHNZ(C4F8). Low-temperature gas-phase photoelectron spectra of the PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 compounds show that they are strong electron acceptors, with the three PHNZ(C4F8)2 isomers having electron affinities exceeding that of C60. Cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile show that the five PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 compounds exhibit reversible one-electron reductions with large positive shifts in their reduction potentials relative to unsubstituted PHNZ. Spectroelectrochemical absorption and EPR spectra of PHNZ(C4F8)1,2- • anion radicals and extensive DFT calculations revealed the significant role that the different substitution patterns have on determining the optoelectronic properties of the PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 derivatives and PHNZ(C4F8)1,2- • anion radicals. Time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements and photoluminescence spectra of blends of the PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 derivatives with the donor poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were recorded to assess the possible use of the new compounds in optoelectronic devices.

Interfaces and the extended Hilbert space of Chern-Simons theory

The low energy effective field theories of (2 + 1) dimensional topological phases of matter provide powerful avenues for investigating entanglement in their ground states. In [1] the entanglement between distinct Abelian topological phases was investigated through Abelian Chern-Simons theories equipped with a set of topological boundary conditions (TBCs). In the present paper we extend the notion of a TBC to non-Abelian Chern-Simons theories, providing an effective description for a class of gapped interfaces across non-Abelian topological phases. These boundary conditions furnish a defining relation for the extended Hilbert space of the quantum theory and allow the calculation of entanglement directly in the gauge theory. Because we allow for trivial interfaces, this includes a generic construction of the extended Hilbert space in any (compact) Chern-Simons theory quantized on a Riemann surface. Additionally, this provides a constructive and principled definition for the Hilbert space of effective ground states of gapped phases of matter glued along gapped interfaces. Lastly, we describe a generalized notion of surgery, adding a powerful tool from topological field theory to the gapped interface toolbox.

Reentrant polar phase induced by the ferroionic coupling in B⁢i 1−𝑥 ⁢S⁢m 𝑥 ⁢Fe⁢O 3 nanoparticles

Using the model of four sublattices, the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire-Kittel phenomenological approach and the Stephenson-Highland ionic adsorption model for the description of coupled polar and antipolar long-range orders in ferroics, we analytically calculated the phase diagrams and polar properties of B⁢i 1−𝑥 ⁢S⁢m 𝑥⁢ Fe⁢O 3 nanoparticles covered by surface ions with dependence on their size, surface ions density, samarium content 𝑥 , and temperature. The size effects and ferroionic coupling govern the appearance and stability conditions of the long-range ordered ferroelectric, reentrant ferrielectric, and antiferroelectric phases in B⁢i 1−𝑥 ⁢S⁢m 𝑥 ⁢Fe⁢O 3 nanoparticles. Calculated phase diagrams are in qualitative agreement with the x-ray diffraction phase analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, and electrophysical measurements of B⁢i 1−𝑥 ⁢S⁢m 𝑥 ⁢Fe⁢O 3 nanopowders sintered by the solution combustion method. The combined theoretical-experimental approach allows us to explain the influence of the ferroionic coupling and size effects in B⁢i 1−𝑥 ⁢S⁢m 𝑥 ⁢Fe⁢O 3 nanoparticles on their polar properties.

Phase stability and magnetic and electronic properties of a spark plasma sintered CoFe – P soft magnetic alloy

More efficient power conversion devices are able to transmit greater electrical power across larger distances to satisfy growing global electrical needs. A critical requirement to achieve more efficient power conversion are the soft magnetic materials used as core materials in transformers, inductors, and motors. To that effect it is well known that the use of non-equilibrium microstructures, which are, for example, nanocrystalline or consist of single phase solid solutions, can yield high saturation magnetic polarization and high electrical resistivity necessary for more efficient soft magnetic materials. In this work, we synthesized CoFe – P soft magnetic alloys containing nanocrystalline, single phase solid solution microstructures and studied the effect of a secondary intermetallic phase on the saturation magnetic polarization and electrical resistivity of the consolidated alloy. Single phase solid solution CoFe – P alloys were prepared through mechanically alloying metal powders and phase decomposition was observed after subsequent consolidation via spark plasma sintering (SPS) at various temperatures. The secondary intermetallic phase was identified as the orthorhombic (Co x Fe 1-x ) 2 P phase and the magnetic properties of the (Co x Fe 1-x ) 2 P intermetallic phase were found to be detrimental to the soft magnetic properties of the targeted CoFe – P alloy.

Development of Half-Sandwich Ru, Os, Rh, and Ir Complexes Bearing the Pyridine-2-ylmethanimine Bidentate Ligand Derived from 7-Chloroquinazolin-4(3H)-one with Enhanced Antiproliferative Activity

Kinesin spindle protein (KSP) inhibitors are one of the most promising anticancer agents developed in recent years. Herein, we report the synthesis of ispinesib-core pyridine derivative conjugates, which are potent KSP inhibitors, with half-sandwich complexes of ruthenium, osmium, rhodium, and iridium. Conjugation of 7-chloroquinazolin-4(3H)-one with the pyridine-2-ylmethylimine group and the organometallic moiety resulted in up to a 36-fold increased cytotoxicity with IC 50 values in the micromolar and nanomolar range also toward drug-resistant cells. All studied conjugates increased the percentage of cells in the G 2 /M phase, simultaneously decreasing the number of cells in the G 1 /G 0 phase, suggesting mitotic arrest. Additionally, ruthenium derivatives were able to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS); however, no significant influence of the organometallic moiety on KSP inhibition was observed, which suggests that conjugation of a KSP inhibitor with the organometallic moiety modulates its mechanism of action.

Strain‐Driven Mixed‐Phase Domain Architectures and Topological Transitions in Pb 1− x Sr x TiO 3 Thin Films

Abstract The potential for creating hierarchical domain structures, or mixtures of energetically degenerate phases with distinct patterns that can be modified continually, in ferroelectric thin films offers a pathway to control their mesoscale structure beyond lattice‐mismatch strain with a substrate. Here, it is demonstrated that varying the strontium content provides deterministic strain‐driven control of hierarchical domain structures in Pb 1− x Sr x TiO 3 solid‐solution thin films wherein two types, c / a and a 1 / a 2 , of nanodomains can coexist. Combining phase‐field simulations, epitaxial thin‐film growth, detailed structural, domain, and physical‐property characterization, it is observed that the system undergoes a gradual transformation (with increasing strontium content) from droplet‐like a 1 / a 2 domains in a c / a domain matrix, to a connected‐labyrinth geometry of c / a domains, to a disconnected labyrinth structure of the same, and, finally, to droplet‐like c / a domains in an a 1 / a 2 domain matrix. A relationship between the different mixed‐phase modulation patterns and its topological nature is established. Annealing the connected‐labyrinth structure leads to domain coarsening forming distinctive regions of parallel c / a and a 1 / a 2 domain stripes, offering additional design flexibility. Finally, it is found that the connected‐labyrinth domain patterns exhibit the highest dielectric permittivity.

Probing charge density wave phases and the Mott transition in 1 T -TaS 2 by inelastic light scattering

We present a polarization-resolved, high-resolution Raman scattering study of the three consecutive charge density wave (CDW) regimes in 1T - TaS 2 single crystals, supported by ab initio calculations. Our analysis of the spectra within the low-temperature commensurate (C-CDW) regime shows P$\bar3$ symmetry of the system, thus excluding the previously proposed triclinic stacking of the “star-of-David” structure, and promoting trigonal or hexagonal stacking instead. The spectra of the high-temperature incommensurate (IC-CDW) phase directly project the phonon density of states due to the breaking of the translational invariance, supplemented by sizable electron-phonon coupling. Between 200 and 352 K, our Raman spectra show contributions from both the IC-CDW and the C-CDW phases, indicating their coexistence in the so-called nearly commensurate (NC-CDW) phase. The temperature dependence of the symmetry-resolved Raman conductivity indicates the stepwise reduction of the density of states in the CDW phases, followed by a Mott transition within the C-CDW phase. We determine the size of the Mott gap to be Ω gap ≈ 170 – 190 meV, and track its temperature dependence.

Cascade of phase transitions in a planar Dirac material

Here we investigate a model of interacting Dirac fermions in 2 + 1 dimensions with M flavors and N colors having the U(M)×SU(N ) symmetry. In the large-N limit, we find that the U(M) symmetry is spontaneously broken in a variety of ways. In the vacuum, when the parity-breaking flavor-singlet mass is varied, the ground state undergoes a sequence of M first-order phase transitions, experiencing M + 1 phases characterized by symmetry breaking U(M)→U(M – k)×U(k) with k ϵ {0, 1, 2, · · · , M}, bearing a close resemblance to the vacuum structure of three-dimensional QCD. At finite temperature and chemical potential, a rich phase diagram with first and second-order phase transitions and tricritical points is observed. Also exotic phases with spontaneous symmetry breaking of the form as U(3)→U(1) 3 , U(4)→U(2)×U(1) 2 , and U(5)→U(2)2×U(1) exist. For a large flavor-singlet mass, the increase of the chemical potential μ brings about M consecutive first-order transitions that separate the low-μ phase diagram with vanishing fermion density from the high-μ region with a high fermion density.

Dichotomy of flat bands in the van der Waals ferromagnet Fe 5 ⁢GeTe 2

Quantum materials with bands of narrow bandwidth near the Fermi level represent a promising platform for exploring a diverse range of fascinating physical phenomena, as the high density of states within the small energy window often enables the emergence of many-body physics. On one hand, flat bands can arise from strong Coulomb interactions that localize atomic orbitals. On the other hand, quantum destructive interference can quench the electronic kinetic energy. Although both have a narrow bandwidth, the two types of flat bands should exhibit very distinct spectral properties arising from their distinctive origins. So far, the two types of flat bands have only been realized in very different material settings and chemical environments, preventing a direct comparison. Here, in this study, we report the observation of the two types of flat bands within the same material system—an above-room-temperature van der Waals ferromagnet, Fe 5−x GeTe 2 , distinguishable by a switchable iron site order. The contrasting nature of the flat bands is also identified by the remarkably distinctive temperature evolution of the spectral features, indicating that one arises from electron correlations in the Fe(1) site-disordered phase, while the other geometrical frustration in the Fe(1) site-ordered phase. Our results therefore provide a direct juxtaposition of the distinct formation mechanism of flat bands in quantum materials and an avenue for understanding the distinctive roles flat bands play in the presence of magnetism, topology, and lattice geometrical frustration, utilizing sublattice ordering as a key control parameter.

Thermal Conductivity of β-Phase Ga 2 O 3 and (Al x Ga 1– x ) 2 O 3 Heteroepitaxial Thin Films

Heteroepitaxy of β-phase gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 ) thin films on foreign substrates shows promise for the development of next-generation deep ultraviolet solar blind photodetectors and power electronic devices. In this work, the influences of the film thickness and crystallinity on the thermal conductivity of ($\bar{2}01$)-oriented β-Ga 2 O 3 heteroepitaxial thin films were investigated. Unintentionally doped β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were grown on c-plane sapphire substrates with off-axis angles of 0° and 6° toward $\langle$$11\bar{2}0$$\rangle$ via metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) and low-pressure chemical vapor deposition. The surface morphology and crystal quality of the β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The thermal conductivities of the β-Ga 2 O 3 films were measured via time-domain thermoreflectance. The interface quality was studied using scanning transmission electron microscopy. The measured thermal conductivities of the submicron-thick β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were relatively low as compared to the intrinsic bulk value. The measured thin film thermal conductivities were compared with the Debye–Callaway model incorporating phononic parameters derived from first-principles calculations. The comparison suggests that the reduction in the thin film thermal conductivity can be partially attributed to the enhanced phonon-boundary scattering when the film thickness decreases. They were found to be a strong function of not only the layer thickness but also the film quality, resulting from growth on substrates with different offcut angles. Growth of β-Ga 2 O 3 films on 6° offcut sapphire substrates was found to result in higher crystallinity and thermal conductivity than films grown on on-axis c-plane sapphire. However, the β-Ga 2 O 3 films grown on 6° offcut sapphire exhibit a lower thermal boundary conductance at the β-Ga 2 O 3 /sapphire heterointerface. In addition, the thermal conductivity of MOVPE-grown ($\bar{2}01$)-oriented β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 thin films with Al compositions ranging from 2% to 43% was characterized. Because of phonon-alloy disorder scattering, the β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 films exhibit lower thermal conductivities (2.8–4.7 W/m∙K) than the β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films. The dominance of the alloy disorder scattering in β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 is further evidenced by the weak temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity. This work provides fundamental insight into the physical interactions that govern phonon transport within heteroepitaxially grown β-phase Ga 2 O 3 and (Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 thin films and lays the groundwork for the thermal modeling and design of β-Ga 2 O 3 electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Gas-Phase Formation of C 5 H 6 Isomers via the Crossed Molecular Beam Reaction of the Methylidyne Radical (CH; X 2 Π) with 1,2-Butadiene (CH 3 CHCCH 2 ; X 1 A')

The bimolecular gas-phase reaction of the methylidyne radical (CH; X 2 Π) with 1,2-butadiene (CH 2 CCHCH 3 ; X 1 A’) was investigated at a collision energy of 20.6 kJ mol -1 under single collision conditions. Combining our laboratory data with high-level electronic structure calculations, we reveal that this bimolecular reaction proceeds through the barrierless addition of the methylidyne radical to the carbon-carbon double bonds of 1,2-butadiene leading to doublet C 5 H 7 intermediates. These collision adducts undergo a non-statistical unimolecular decomposition through atomic hydrogen elimination to at least the cyclic 1-vinyl-cyclopropene (p5/p26), 1-methyl-3-methylenecyclopropene (p28), and 1,2-bis(me-thylene)cyclopropane (p29) in overall exoergic reactions. Lastly, the barrierless nature of this bimolecular reaction suggests that these cyclic C 5 H 6 isomers might be viable targets to be searched in cold molecular clouds like TMC-1.

Interfacial intermixing and anti-phase boundaries in GaP/Si(0 0 1) heterostructures

Epitaxial GaP/Si heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and migration-enhanced epitaxy (MEE) have been studied, primarily using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM). Atomically-resolved structure images, which are sensitive to atomic-column intensity revealed the detailed geometry of antiphase boundaries that were both parallel and also inclined to the growth direction. The polar/non-polar GaP/Si interfaces were neither atomically flat laterally nor abrupt vertically. Measurements of intensity profiles using both bright-field and dark-field AC-STEM images, as well as chemically-sensitive g 002 dark-field imaging, indicated substantial interfacial intermixing, which increased significantly from ~1.3 nm (MEE growth at 440 °C) to ~2.1 nm (MBE growth at 600 °C). The finite interface width will impact theoretical predictions of charge imbalance and strong electric fields across the heterointerface.
