Survey: National Environmental Satellite Service

The national Environmental Satellite Service (NESS) receives data at periodic intervals from satellites of the Synchronous Meteorological Satellite/Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite series and from the Improved TIROS (Television Infrared Observational Satellite) Operational Satellite. Within the conterminous United States, direct readout and processed products are distributed to users over facsimile networks from a central processing and data distribution facility. In addition, the NESS Satellite Field Stations analyze, interpret, and distribute processed geostationary satellite products to regional weather service activities.

Investigation of light scattering as a technique for detecting discrete soot particles in a luminous flame

The practicability of using a classical light-scattering technique, involving comparison of angular scattering intensity patterns with theoretically determined Mie and Rayleight patterns, to detect discrete soot particles (diameter less than 50 nm) in premixed propane/air and propane/oxygen-helium flames is considered. The experimental apparatus employed in this investigation included a laser light source, a flat-flame burner, specially coated optics, a cooled photomultiplier detector, and a lock-in voltmeter readout. Although large, agglomerated soot particles were detected and sized, it was not possible to detect small, discrete particles. The limiting factor appears to be background scattering by the system's optics.

Magneto-optic detection system with noise cancellation

In a magneto-optic readout system, a polarized beam of light from a laser is subjected to the magneto-optical effect of a magnetic record medium, and then passed through an analyzer which resolves the beam into two orthogonal vector components so oriented that the two components are of equal amplitude when the angle of rotation due to the magneto-optic effect is zero. Separate photodetectors produce two output signals which are proportional to the amplitudes of the vector components. The two output signals are combined in a differential amplifier through separate logarithmic transfer circuits to produce an output signal proportional to the ratio of the two original detector signals.

Phase-locked tracking loops for LORAN-C

Portable battery operated LORAN-C receivers were fabricated to evaluate simple envelope detector methods with hybrid analog to digital phase locked loop sensor processors. The receivers are used to evaluate LORAN-C in general aviation applications. Complete circuit details are given for the experimental sensor and readout system.

Magnetometer with a miniature transducer and automatic scanning

The magnetometer is based on the time variation of the magnetic permeability in the magnetic material of its transducer; however, its operation is substantially different from the ordinary flux-gate magnetometer. The transducer uses 0.05 mm diameter plated magnetic wire and is made flat enabling it to make measurements of transverse magnetic fields as close as 0.08 mm from the surface, and it has very good spatial resolution because of its small active region of approximately 0.64 mm by 0.76 mm. The magnetometer uses an inexpensive clip-on millimeter for driving and processing the electrical signals and readout. It also utilizes an automatic scanning technique which is made possible by a specially designed transducer holding mechanism that replaces the ink pen on an X-Y recorder.

Trapped-flux spin-down torques on a spherical superconducting gyroscope

Magnetic flux trapped in the rotor of a superconducting gyroscope can cause the rotor to lose energy through dissipation in a readout loop encompassing the rotor and by the generation of eddy currents in the support electrodes. These losses are calculated and shown to be negligible for the rotor in the gyroscope-relativity experiment, a proposed satellite experiment which is to test predictions of the theory of general relativity.

A hard X-ray imaging instrument for solar and cosmic sources

A hard X-ray imaging instrument is described which is capable of high-resolution imaging of solar and cosmic hard X-ray sources between 2 and 80 keV during Shuttle sortie flights. The properties of solar burst sources and the resulting instrument requirements are discussed. The instrument envelope of 1.2 x 1.2 x 3.0 meters includes a tungsten multigrid collimator which has 4-arcsec resolution, a 40-arcmin response envelope and a point-source effective area of 26 sq cm. A combination of periodic fan beams and nonperiodic pencil beams enables a unique deconvolution to be achieved within a 128 x 128 arcsec field without mechanical scanning. The detector system is a set of direct-readout 40 atm-cm xenon-filled proportional counters designed to minimize background. The instrument is capable of refurbishment to optimize the collimator configuration for specific solar or cosmic scientific objectives, to upgrade the angular resolution, or to extend the high-energy response.

Acoustic emission strand burning technique for motor burning rate prediction

An acoustic emission (AE) method is being used to measure the burning rate of solid propellant strands. This method has a precision of 0.5% and excellent burning rate correlation with both subscale and large rocket motors. The AE procedure burns the sample under water and measures the burning rate from the acoustic output. The acoustic signal provides a continuous readout during testing, which allows complete data analysis rather than the start-stop clockwires used by the conventional method. The AE method helps eliminate such problems as inhibiting the sample, pressure increase and temperature rise, during testing.

Cloud type separation by spectral differencing of image pairs

A technique is presented for discriminating different cloud types through an image subtraction of visible and infrared SMS/GOES picture pairs. The technique emphasizes how one could separate snow from clouds and identify cirrus by the subtraction method. Quantitative threshold values are shown which can be used in an objective manner to make this separation. Use is made of an all-digital image display device allowing such mathematical operations to be performed on satellite data. Techniques such as this can be made operational through the interfacing of the image analysis system with a direct-readout SMS/GOES ground station and distribution network.

The following are reviewed: (1) monolithic extrinsic arrays; (2) monolithic intrinsic arrays; (3) charge injection devices; and (4) hybrid arrays.

Simulator method and apparatus for practicing the mating of an observer-controlled object with a target

A servo controlled target replica, and a surface bearing a computer generated line drawing of an object are individually viewed by separate television cameras allowing a two-dimensional composite of the target replica and the object to be displayed on a monitor simulating what an observer would see through a window in a spacecraft. The target replica is coded along one self coordinate axis in such a way that the distance of an elemental area on the target along the axis is capable of being remotely readout by a television camera. A third television camera responsive to the code reads out this information by which the Z-coordinate, relative to the observer, can be calculated, on-line with the scan, for the contents of each picture element of the scene televised by the target camera.

Miniature implantable ultrasonic echosonometer

A miniature echosonometer adapted for implantation in the interior of an animal for imaging the internal structure of a organ, tissue or vessel is presented. The echosonometer includes a receiver/transmitter circuit which is coupled to an ultrasonic transducer. Power is coupled to the echosonometer by electromagnetic induction through the animal's skin. Imaging signals from the echosonometer are electromagnetically transmitted through the animal's skin to an external readout apparatus.

Air pressure measurement

The pressure measurement was made by a Model 830J Rosemont sensor which utilized the principle of a changing pressure to change correspondingly the capacitance of the pressure sensitive element. The sensor's range was stated to be from zero to 100 Torr (14 km); however, the sensor was not activated until an altitude of 20 km (41 Torr) was reached during the balloon ascent. The resolution of the sensor was specified by the manufacturer as infinitesimal; however, associated electronic and pressure readout systems limit the resolution to .044 Torr. Thus in the vicinity of an altitude of 30 km the pressure resolution corresponded to an altitude resolution of approximately 33 meters.
