Shifted μ -hybrid inflation, gravitino dark matter, and observable gravity waves

We investigate supersymmetric hybrid inflation in a realistic model based on the gauge symmetry SU(4) c × SU(2) L × SU(2) R . The minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) μ term arises, following Dvali, Lazarides, and Shafi, from the coupling of the MSSM electroweak doublets to a gauge singlet superfield which plays an essential role in inflation. The primordial monopoles are inflated away by arranging that the SU(4) c × SU(2) L × SU(2) R symmetry is broken along the inflationary trajectory. The interplay between the (above) μ coupling, the gravitino mass, and the reheating following inflation is discussed in detail. We explore regions of the parameter space that yield gravitino dark matter and observable gravity waves with the tensor-to-scalar ratio r ~ 10 –4 –10 –3 .

Measurements of pressure-induced $Kβ$ line shifts in ramp compressed cobalt up to 8 Mbar

Here we report measurements of K -shell fluorescence lines induced by fast electrons in ramp-compressed Co targets. The fluorescence emission was stimulated by fast electrons generated through short-pulse laser-solid interaction with an Al target layer. Compression up to 2.1 × solid density was achieved while maintaining temperatures well below the Fermi energy, effectively removing the thermal effects from consideration. We observed small but unambiguous redshifts in the K β fluorescence line relative to unshifted Cu K α . Redshifts up to 2.6 eV were found to increase with compression and to be consistent with predictions from self-consistent models based on density-functional theory.

Computing Nonequilibrium Responses with Score-Shifted Stochastic Differential Equations

Using equilibrium fluctuations to understand the response of a physical system to an externally imposed perturbation is the basis for linear response theory, which is widely used to interpret experiments and shed light on microscopic dynamics. For nonequilibrium systems, perturbations cannot be interpreted simply by monitoring fluctuations in a conjugate observable and general response results rely on path ensemble averaging. Furthermore, these techniques do not apply to perturbations that affect the diffusion tensor in a stochastic system. Here, we introduce an “effective” physical process that represents the diffusion perturbed dynamics and enables accurate calculations of responses to a change in the diffusion. Interestingly, the effective dynamics contain an additional drift involving the instantaneous “score” of the system, and we leverage score matching algorithms to carry out nonequilibrium response calculations on systems for which the exact stationary distribution is unknown.
