The Circular Economy Lifecycle Assessment and Visualization Framework - CELAVI

A circular economy (CE) aims to decouple human activities from economic growth and resource use, and its overall goal is reducing or avoiding negative environmental externalities. The newly developed Circular Economy Lifecycle Assessment and Visualization (CELAVI) framework simulates changes in supply chain environmental impacts as it transitions toward circularity. This study expands CELAVI by incorporating detailed spatial resolution and real-world road routes connecting all facilities within the system. The case study on end-of-life decision making of wind turbine blades in the states of Iowa and Missouri explores how supply chain circularity and environmental impacts are affected by pathway costs and level of wind turbine installations. It demonstrates how high circularity costs might be beneficial for circularity transitions given revenue generated from circular pathways. Finally, impacts have important contributions to the supply chain design and thus show the importance of including detailed spatial resolution in CELAVI and CE studies in general.

Circular Economy Modeling Efforts at NREL: Circular Economy Lifecycle Analysis and Visualization (CELAVI) and the Circular Economy Agent-Based Model (ABM)

Circular Economy (CE) aims at decoupling human activities from economic growth and resource use. While CE economic and environmental benefits are often touted by its proponents, increased circularity and improved sustainability do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. The Circular Economy Lifecycle Assessment and Visualization (CELAVI) framework simulates the transition of renewable energy technology supply chains towards circularity and quantifies spatially explicit environmental impacts and supply chain costs. Using wind blade end-of-life (EOL) management as a case study, this presentation will highlight CELAVI's features. Furthermore, envisioned extension to the framework could improve the stakeholder decision model by accounting for logistical and other factors. The CELAVI framework could be leveraged to answer crucial questions regarding renewables EOL management.

Visual, Optical and Replica Inspections: Surface Preparation of 650 MHz NB Cavity for PIP-II Linac

Surface preparation of niobium superconducting RF cavities is a critical step for achieving good RF performance under the superconducting state. Surface defect, roughness, and contamination affect the accelerating gradient and quality factor of the cavities. We report surface inspection methods used to control the surface processing of 650 MHz cavities designated for the pre-production and prototype cryomodules for PIP-II linac. The cavity surface was routinely inspected visually, with an optical camera, and by microscopic scanning of surface replicas. This article covers details on the surface inspection methods and surface polishing process used to repair the surface.

Automating Log Synthesis and Visualization with Python and Splunk

The goal of this project is to automate log analysis by utilizing Splunk, Bash, and Python together. Simplifying the monitoring and analysis of network traffic was the main goal. In order to accomplish this, a Bash script was created to use 'tcpdump' to automate network sniffing. It also included a 24-hour file rotation mechanism to effectively manage the pcap files that were generated. After that, a Python script was written to read these pcap files and retrieve pertinent data about network traffic. After processing the collected data, Splunk is used to summarize the important metrics and visualize said information with relevant graphs.

Internet of things and operational technology detection and visualization platform

A computer-implemented method of monitoring activity of devices in a network is provided. The method comprises passively collecting data regarding how the devices access the network, and for each device on the network, identifying all other devices on the network with which the device communicates. All communication traffic from the devices to outside the network is identified. A determination is made if there are any required updates and if patches for the devices execute in a fashion defined as safe. A number of risk indicators for privacy risks are determined according to device communication within the network, device communication to outside the network, and update and patch execution. A visualization of any identified risk factors is displayed to a user through a user interface.

Neutrino Flavor Classification in ICARUS Experiment Using Convolutional Visual Networks

In this work, I adapt the Convolutional Visual Network (CVN) approach to the ICARUS detector by incorporating TPC stitching methods inspired by NuGraph. The stitching technique used here is unique to ICARUS, designed specifically to handle its distinct detector segmentation s. I then retrain the network using ICARUS-specific data. This study underscores the flexibility of deep learning models in high-energy physics and the importance of accounting for detector-specific features when transferring machine learning techniques between experiments. This dissertation presents the methods, classification performance, and insights gained from applying CVN to ICARUS data.

Visualization of Thermal and Strain Dynamics in X-ray Optics by Time-Resolved Rocking Curve Imaging

The absorption of intense X-ray pulses from free-electron lasers by X-ray crystal optics triggers rapid thermal and mechanical responses, including lattice compression, expan- sion, and strain-wave propagation, which dynamically modify diffraction conditions and wavefront properties. These effects pose significant challenges for next-generation high- repetition-rate X-ray sources, particularly for crystal monochromators used in XFEL beam- lines and self-seeding. Here, we demonstrate time-resolved rocking curve imaging (TrRCI) of X-ray Bragg optics with high spatial resolution (6.4 μm) and sub-1-μrad angular resolu- tion, enabling direct visualization of lattice dynamics from nanoseconds to microseconds. By combining a high-flux beamline at SPring-8, a scintillator-coupled sCMOS detector, and a synchronized femtosecond laser system, we capture lattice dynamics induced by tran- sient laser heating with a strain sensitivity on the order of 10−6 . Our results reveal transient lattice deformation and the propagation of laser-induced strain waves over millimeter-scale distances. This approach provides experimental benchmarks for understanding heat-load effects in high-repetition-rate X-ray optics.

The Influence of Visual Provenance Representations on Strategies in a Collaborative Hand-off Data Analysis Scenario

Conducting data analysis tasks rarely occur in isolation. Especially in intelligence analysis scenarios where different experts contribute knowledge to a shared understanding, members must communicate how insights develop to establish common ground among collaborators. The use of provenance to communicate analytic sensemaking carries promise by describing the interactions and summarizing the steps taken to reach insights. Yet, no universal guidelines exist for communicating provenance in different settings. Our work here focuses on the presentation of provenance information and the resulting conclusions reached and strategies used by new analysts. In an open-ended, 30-minute, textual exploration scenario, we qualitatively compare how adding different types of provenance information (specifically data coverage and interaction history) affects analysts' confidence in conclusions developed, propensity to repeat work, filtering of data, identification of relevant information, and typical investigation strategies. We see that data coverage (i.e., what was interacted with) provides provenance information without limiting individual investigation freedom. On the other hand, while interaction history (i.e., when something was interacted with) does not significantly encourage more mimicry, it does take more time to comfortably understand, as represented by less confident conclusions and less relevant information-gathering behaviors. In conclusion, our results contribute empirical data towards understanding how provenance summarizations can influence analysis behaviors.

K-region tetrasubstituted deep-blue pyrene-based luminogens: Visual detection of trace nitroaniline

In recent years, fluorescence sensors have been widely used in explosive detection due to their portability and high efficiency. Here, in the present work, two K-region tetrasubstituted deep-blue pyrene-based luminogens were designed and synthesized by introducing electron-donating groups. The optical properties were investigated by experimental and density functional theory (DFT) methods. Reasonable luminescence efficiency and electron rich characteristic allowed for the possible detection of nitro-explosives. Both luminogens, especially TFPy, exhibit a sensitive response towards nitroanilines (NA), with a limit of detection (LOD) for p-NA as low as 2.75 × 10 –8 M, which is mainly attributed to the electron-donating substituents on the periphery of the pyrene core and the extended π-conjugated structure. These research results establish a low-cost and simple strategy for the detection of trace nitroaniline.

MODE: A Web Application for Interactive Visualization and Exploration of Omics Data

Studies generating transcriptomics, proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics (colloquially referred to as “omics”) data allow researchers to find biomarkers or molecular targets, or understand complex biological structures and functions by identifying changes in biomolecule abundance and expression between experimental conditions. Omics data is multi-dimensional and oftentimes summarization techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) are used to identify high-level patterns in data. Though useful, these summaries don’t allow exploration of detailed patterns in omics data that may have biological relevance. The use of interactive HTML displays with plots allows researchers to interact with omics data at a detailed level, but building these displays requires significant coding expertise. To overcome this barrier, the software MODE was built to empower users to build their own interactive HTML displays to support scientific discovery. These displays are easily shareable, do not depend on a specific operating system, and allow users to effortlessly sort and filter plots by categorical or numerical variables. MODE allows users to build and share these displays with several options for plot design and meta selection. In conclusion, the MODE web application and its capabilities are presented and then demonstrated on lipidomics data from a leaf wounding study.

Visualization and analysis of coupling between plasmas self-organization and plasma-induced fluid circulation in 1 atm DC glows with liquid anode

The physical processes prevailing when plasma contacts liquid water are poorly understood; however, it is this very interaction that is the basis of new, exciting technologies for water purification, the treatment of cancer and disease and the production of new, high value chemical products. A chief impediment to widespread application of plasmas for the aforementioned applications is scale up and cost. Here we investigate plasma induced flows which facilitate transport of reactivity from the plasma to liquid water at rates much faster than diffusion. We find that this plasma induced motion varies depending on whether or not the plasma is self organized. The insight from this work paves the way to a better understanding of transport and ultimately informing plasma treatment technologies on how to best optimize the rate at which processes such as plasma based water purification occurs.
