Five years in the life of an inertial system operating in orbit

The paper describes the in-orbit performance of the gyroscopes and strapdown attitude reference system for the OAO-C (Copernicus) satellite, launched on Aug. 21, 1972. In order to fulfill NASA requirements, the inertial system had to: (1) operate for at least one year in orbit without failure, (2) maintain an inertial reference with an uncertainty of 50 microradians or less for at least one hour, and (3) control attitude changes with an accuracy of at least 30 parts per million. During the orbit period, the inertial system has demonstrated a capability for maintaining an inertial reference that is significantly better than these performance goals.

Five micron limb-darkening and the structure of the Jovian atmosphere

A combined radiative, dynamical, and chemical model of the Jovian atmosphere is presented which reproduces the observed IR limb-darkening curves for several regions on the disk of Jupiter. Two approaches are used to perform the inversion required for determination of the source function, and a power-series-expansion model is examined, along with a convective-equilibrium model, cloud and intermediate-zone models, and a thin-shell model. The statistical methods used in the analysis are outlined, and model fits to the observations are discussed. The chemistry of phase transitions in the hot spots of Jupiter's equatorial belt is briefly investigated.

Evaluation of helicopter noise due to b blade-vortex interaction for five tip configurations

The effect of tip shape modification on blade vortex interaction induced helicopter blade slap noise was investigated. Simulated flight and descent velocities which have been shown to produce blade slap were tested. Aerodynamic performance parameters of the rotor system were monitored to ensure properly matched flight conditions among the tip shapes. The tunnel was operated in the open throat configuration with treatment to improve the acoustic characteristics of the test chamber. Four promising tips were used along with a standard square tip as a baseline configuration. A detailed acoustic evaluation on the same rotor system of the relative applicability of the various tip configurations for blade slap noise reduction is provided.

Physiologic reactions during five weeks of continuous residence in an artificial humid and hot climate

During 5 weeks in a climatic room, total sweat during work almost doubled. Initial hour differences increasingly equalized. There was a displacement of sweat secretion from trunk to extremities till the end of week 3, occurring earlier and more clearly for the arm than for the leg. Work temperatures dropped rapidly and evenly to a constant level by day 11. Circulation behavior matched that of temperature. Pulse rate during work dropped like rectal temperature and pulse rate during rest was phasically like the pattern of corresponding temperatures. Except for the first days urine output was adequate and even, Na decreasing in the urine until week 3, then returning to initial values. Na and K in sweat declined but with opposite patterns for hours 1-4. Total salt elimination decreased. The conclusive phenomena of redistribution occurred within the first 3 weeks. A few functions changed later also. Relatively trivial changes in an otherwise uniform reaction pattern indicated that after 3 or even 5 weeks of acclimatization the process is not over or at least not completely so. The tempo of the process appears to be a function of the degree of loading.

Spectral effects on direct-insolation absorptance of five collector coatings

Absorptances for direct insolation of black chrome, black nickel, copper oxide, and two black zinc conversion selective coatings were calculated for a number of typical solar spectrums. Measured spectral reflectances were used while the effects of atmospheric ozone density, turbidity, and air mass were incorporated in calculated direct solar spectrums. Absorptance variation for direct insolation was found to be of the order of 1 percent for a typical range of clear-sky atmospheric conditions.

The five-minute oscillations: What's left to be done

Current observational methods for studying these oscillations at large horizontal wavenumbers are discussed in detail and several two dimensional power spectra obtained with a CID camera on the main spectrograph of the McMath telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory are described. The best-resolved observations of the p-mode obtained at chromospheric elevations are also presented. Recent progress in studies of the p-modes at low wavenumbers with full-disk velocity detection schemes is summarized. These full-disk observations of radial and low-degree non-radial modes were shown to place severe constraints on the theoretical calculation of solar interior structure. Progress in making fully-consistent solar models which fit both the high- and low-wave number observations is described. Finally, the observational and theoretical improvements that are necessary for further progress in solar seismology are summarized.

Five scales of airflow associated with a series of downbursts on 16 July 1980

An attempt is made to estimate wind speed in a series of windstorms, which occurred in a 50-km wide zone from Chicago to Detroit on July 16, 1980, based on three types of airborne objects: a 180 kg chimney, a 1000 kg corn storage bin, and lumber from damaged roofs. The maximum wind speed obtained is 63 + or - 10 m/sec, or 140 + or - 25 mph. SMS/GOES pictures show that the parent cloud was oval-shaped, with a lifetime in excess of 12 hours. That the downbursts began when overshooting activities subsided is indicated by the rapid shrinking of overshooting areas enclosed by -66 C isotherms at the onset of the Chicago-area downbursts. Cloud-top features and wind effects on the ground are presented with no attempt to relate them, on the basis of current conceptual models.

Four- and five-layer silicon-clad dielectric waveguides

Computer modeling studies conducted on four-layer silicon-clad dielectric waveguides indicate that the attenuation (alpha) and mode index (beta/K) behave as exponentially damped sinusoids as the silicon thickness is increased. The observed effect can be explained quite simply as a periodic coupling between the guided modes of the lossless structure and the lossy modes supported by the high-refractive index silicon. The attenuation and mode index are significantly altered by conductivity changes in the silicon; an amplitude modulator and an intensity modulator were proposed using these results. Predicted high attenuations in the device may be reduced significantly with a silicon dioxide buffer layer between the semiconductor and the polystyrene guide. Experimental confirmation of the predicted characteristics is still necessary. A number of thin-silicon film waveguides have been RF sputtered but attenuation measurements to verify the damped oscillatory behavior are forthcoming. Conductivity variations of the silicon should demonstrate the modulation capabilities.

Reflectance of litter accumulation levels at five wavelengths within the 0.5- to 2.5 micron waveband

Reflectance was measured for 1-m2 range grass plots with two canopy treatments (standing and clipped) and four levels of litter accumulation and for grain sorghum with two canopy treatments. Reflectance was significantly higher at the 0.65- to 1.65-, and 2.20-micrometer. Wavelengths for both grass and grain sorghum canopies when the canopies were clipped and the resulting litter was removed. The natural accumulation of litter under the grass canopy did not significantly affect reflectance. The 1.65- and 2.20-micrometer wavelength reflectances of the live grass and the intact litter were 21.8% and 16.2%, respectively, and those of grain sorghum were 21.8% and 16.5%, respectively.

Five-minute oscillations as a subsurface probe of sunspot structure

Observations of the sun which revealed the presence of oscillations due to the 5-min p-modes in the quiet atmosphere are reported. Umbral oscillations with a 145-190 sec period were detected, along with penumbral waves with a 180-250 sec period. The waves have been linked to resonant magneto-atmospheric wave modes in the sunspot atmosphere. The observations were made with a vacuum tower telescope and echelle spectrograph at Sacramento Peak Observatory. Results are presented of the Fe gamma 6,302.5 line. Irregularities in the umbral structures as to which p-mode initiated the activity are taken as evidence that the oscillations are related to activities in sunspot structure below the solar surface. It is shown that the occurrence of three successive p-mode crossings by the oscillations may be valuable for probing the effective depth of a sunspot.
