First Measurement of Charged Current Muon Neutrino-Induced Kaon Production on Argon using the MicroBooNE Detector

MicroBooNE is an 85-tonne active mass liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detector exposed to the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) at Fermilab. One of the key physics goals is the precise measurement of neutrino interactions on argon in the 1 GeV energy regime. The study of strange and heavier meson production in neutrino interactions, in particular final states containing $K^{+}$, will help to improve the background estimates for future nucleon decay searches in experiments such as DUNE, provide valuable input for improving neutrino generator models, and will allow the development of techniques to enhance the particle identification capabilities of LArTPCs. In this work, we present the first-ever cross-section measurements of charged current muon neutrino-induced kaon production on argon at MicroBooNE.

An Iterative Machine Learning Framework for Event Classification and Monte Carlo Tuning in SpinQuest

The E1039/SpinQuest experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory uses a 120~GeV proton beam from the Main Injector incident on transversely polarized proton and deuteron targets, using $NH_3$ and $ND_3$, respectively. In addition to measuring the Sivers asymmetry in Drell--Yan $pp$ and $pd$ scattering from sea quarks, SpinQuest will study transverse-spin effects, particularly the transverse single-spin asymmetry (TSSA) in $J/\psi$ production. The angular distributions from the $J/\psi$ decay could play an important role in understanding the gluon contribution to the proton spin structure. However, before extracting these angular distributions, it is necessary to isolate signal events originating from the target from events produced by other sources and from the combinatorial background. To effectively and accurately classify the target events, it is important to ensure that the simulated events are properly tuned to the experimental physics channels. We have introduced an iterative technique to match simulated and experimental events and to classify the physics channels using deep neural networks and a generative model based on normalizing flows.

Unsupervised physics-informed disentanglement of multimodal data

Here, we introduce physics-informed multimodal autoencoders (PIMA) - a variational inference framework for discovering shared information in multimodal datasets. Individual modalities are embedded into a shared latent space and fused through a product-of-experts formulation, enabling a Gaussian mixture prior to identify shared features. Sampling from clusters allows cross-modal generative modeling, with a mixture-of-experts decoder that imposes inductive biases from prior scientific knowledge and thereby imparts structured disentanglement of the latent space. This approach enables cross-modal inference and the discovery of features in high-dimensional heterogeneous datasets. Consequently, this approach provides a means to discover fingerprints in multimodal scientific datasets and to avoid traditional bottlenecks related to high-fidelity measurement and characterization of scientific datasets.

Monopropellant hydrazine resistojet: Data correlation

The design, development, and testing of an engineering model nominal 20-millipound thrust monopropellant hydrazine resistojet program is divided into six basic tasks. Included in these tasks are analyses, design, test, and data correlation of the electrothermal hydrazine thruster (EHT). A brief summary is provided of the analyses conducted for the EHT and the design of the engineering model thruster. Some of the results of the engineering model tests are then compared with the analytical performance models generated early in the program.

An interactive graphics system to facilitate finite element structural analysis

The characteristics of an interactive graphics systems to facilitate the finite element method of structural analysis are described. The finite element model analysis consists of three phases: (1) preprocessing (model generation), (2) problem solution, and (3) postprocessing (interpretation of results). The advantages of interactive graphics to finite element structural analysis are defined.

On the breakup of tectonic plates by polar wandering

The observed boundary system of the major tectonic plates on the surface of the earth lends fresh support to the hypothesis of polar wandering. A dynamic model of the outer shell of the earth under the influence of polar shift is developed. The analysis falls into two parts: (1) deriving equations for stresses caused by polar shifting; and (2) deducing the pattern according to which the fracture of the shell can be expected. For stress analysis, the theory of plates and shells is the dominant feature of this model. In order to determine the fracture pattern, the existence of a mathematical theorem of plasticity is recalled: it says that the plastic flow begins to occur when a function in terms of the differences of the three principal stresses surpasses a certain critical value. By introducing the figures for the geophysical constants, this model generates stresses which could produce an initial break in the lithosphere.

A coupled fluid-structure dynamic analysis for water impact loads

In this paper a nonlinear transient, hydroelastic method is developed for response analysis of the Space Shuttle recoverable booster on water impact. At each time step, coupled equations of fluid flow and structure dynamics are solved with an iterative, self-correcting process. Rigid body motions are represented by large angle equations. Local deformations are represented by a NASTRAN-generated model of the three-dimensional structure. The fluid is represented by series solutions of the potential flow equation which include the effects of the local structure motions. The resulting water loads and structural stresses obtained will aid in qualification of the final structural design. Comparisons are made to experimental impact data to validate the method.

Winter bulge and diurnal variations in hydrogen inferred from AE-C composition measurements

In situ mass spectrometric measurements of ion and neutral particle thermospheric compositions have been used to infer the latitudinal and diurnal variations of thermospheric atomic hydrogen for solstice conditions. Local time-dependent and local time-independent components of the observed hydrogen distribution were separated on the basis of a model generated by expanding the log of neutral hydrogen concentration in terms of spherical harmonics. Results are compared with analogous data on N2 concentration; the comparison reveals an anticorrelation between gas temperature and hydrogen concentration. The slope of this anticorrelation line represents the 'zero flux condition' from the exosphere theory of Hodges (1973), thus further bearing out the conclusion that exospheric flow is the dominant process governing the global distribution of hydrogen.

The U.S.-NSF/NASA

The five-year research and development plan of the NSF/NASA Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) program is outlined. The program includes mission studies to determine energy use patterns and requirements and define specific applications for wind energy systems, wind energy resource assessment and development, and development of cost-effective components and subsystems. The program is also directed towards the development of energy storage systems to make wind powered systems firm power sources where appropriate. A 100 kW experimental wind generator (Model Zero) is being designed as a flexible test bed for a variety of system components. Designs will be developed for units in the 50 to 200 kW and 500 to 3000 kW size ranges.

A heavy ion beam probe system for investigation of a modified Penning discharge

An ion beam probe diagnostic system can measure time- and space-resolved profiles of plasma space potential and electron density. In combination with a computer iterative technique, the ion beam probe can determine both the space potential profile in plasmas containing strong electric fields and potentials comparable in magnitude to the energy of the probing ion beam. During ion beam probing of a modified Penning discharge, several groups of secondary ions were observed coming from the plasma with a fixed primary beam energy and momentum. The energies of these ions were within 10 percent of the values predicted by a computer-generated model of the potential profile in the plasma. The mechanical and electronic components of the system are described, with particular emphasis on those features required to probe plasma potentials comparable in magnitude to the ion beam energy.

Application of laser velocimetry to aircraft wake-vortex measurements

The theory and use of a laser velocimeter that makes simultaneous measurements of vertical and longitudinal velocities while rapidly scanning a flow field laterally are described, and its direct application to trailing wake-vortex research is discussed. Pertinent measurements of aircraft wake-vortex velocity distributions obtained in a wind tunnel and water towing tank are presented. The utility of the velocimeter to quantitatively assess differences in wake velocity distributions due to wake dissipating devices and span loading changes on the wake-generating model is also demonstrated.

Alternatives for jet engine control

General goals of the research were classified into two categories. The first category involves the use of modern multivariable frequency domain methods for control of engine models in the neighborhood of a quiescent point. The second category involves the use of nonlinear modelling and optimization techniques for control of engine models over a more extensive part of the flight envelope. In the frequency domain category, works were published in the areas of low-interaction design, polynomial design, and multiple setpoint studies. A number of these ideas progressed to the point at which they are starting to attract practical interest. In the nonlinear category, advances were made both in engine modelling and in the details associated with software for determination of time optimal controls. Nonlinear models for a two spool turbofan engine were expanded and refined; and a promising new approach to automatic model generation was placed under study. A two time scale scheme was developed to do two-dimensional dynamic programming, and an outward spiral sweep technique has greatly speeded convergence times in time optimal calculations.

Global lunar crust - Electrical conductivity and thermoelectric origin of remanent magnetism

An upper limit is placed on the average crustal conductivity from an investigation of toroidal (V x B) induction in the moon, using ten-minute data intervals of simultaneous lunar orbiting and surface magnetometer data. Crustal conductivity is determined as a function of crust thickness. For an average global crust thickness of about 80 km, the crust surface electrical conductivity is of the order of 1 hundred millionth mho/m. The toroidal-induction results lower the surface-conductivity limit obtained from poloidal-induction results by approximately four orders of magnitude. In addition, a thermoelectric (Seebeck effect) generator model is presented as a magnetic-field source for thermoremanent magnetization of the lunar crust during its solidification and cooling. Magnetic fields from 1000 to 10,000 gammas are calculated for various crater and crustal geometries. Solidified crustal material cooling through the iron Curie temperature in the presence of such ancient lunar fields could have received thermoremanent magnetization consistent with that measured in most returned lunar samples.

Lunar magnetic permeability, magnetic fields, and electrical conductivity temperature

In the time period 1969-1972 a total of five magnetometers were deployed on the lunar surface during four Apollo missions. Data from these instruments, along with simultaneous measurements from other experiments on the moon and in lunar orbit, were used to study properties of the lunar interior and the lunar environment. The principal scientific results from analyses of the magnetic field data are discussed. The results are presented in the following main categories: (1) lunar electrical conductivity, temperature, and structure; (2) lunar magnetic permeability, iron abundance, and core size limits; (3) the local remnant magnetic fields, their interaction with the solar wind, and a thermoelectric generator model for their origin. Relevant publications and presented papers are listed.

A structural model of the adaptive human pilot

A compensatory tracking model of the human pilot is offered which attempts to provide a more realistic representation of the human's signal processing structure than that which is exhibited by pilot models currently in use. Two features of the model distinguish it from other representations of the human pilot. First, proprioceptive information from the control stick or manipulator constitutes one of the major feedback paths in the model, providing feedback of vehicle output rate due to control activity. Implicit in this feedback loop is a model of the vehicle dynamics which is valid in and beyond the region of crossover. Second, error-rate information is continuously derived and independently but intermittently controlled. An output injected remnant model is offered and qualitatively justified on the basis of providing a measure of the effect of inaccuracies such as time variations in the pilot's internal model of the controlled element dynamics. The data from experimental tracking tasks involving five different controlled element dynamics and one nonideal viewing condition were matched with model generated describing functions and remnant power spectral densities.
