Optical comparator uses holographic subtraction

Integrated optical comparator compares reference and signal voltages by their effects on coherent light beam. If both voltages are same, beam is essentially unperturbed. If voltages differ, light is deflected by previously recorded hologram to detector.

A study of digital holographic filters generation. Phase 2: Digital data communication system, volume 1

An empirical study of the performance of the Viterbi decoders in bursty channels was carried out and an improved algebraic decoder for nonsystematic codes was developed. The hybrid algorithm was simulated for the (2,1), k = 7 code on a computer using 20 channels having various error statistics, ranging from pure random error to pure bursty channels. The hybrid system outperformed both the algebraic and the Viterbi decoders in every case, except the 1% random error channel where the Viterbi decoder had one bit less decoding error.

Fast Holographic Comparator

Comparator is integrated-optical system constructed on a LiNb03sub. waveguide chip. Only the laser, lens and detector are external to chip. Aluminized surface gratings serve as input coupler and beam splitter. Light beams striking edges are returned by ordinary total internal reflection. Three operating modes are possible: A "screening" mode, an "identification" mode and a novel "self-subtraction" mode.

Holographic flow visualization of time-varying shock waves

Rapid-double-exposure, diffuse-illumination holography is evaluated analytically and experimentally as a flow visualization method for time-varying shock waves. Conditions are determined that minimize the distance (localization error) between the surface or curve of interference-fringe localization and the shock surface. Treated specifically are the cases of shock waves in a transonic compressor rotor for which there is laser anemometer data for comparison and shock waves in a flutter cascade.

Holographic Twyman-Green interferometer

A dichromated gelatin off-axis Fresnel zone plate was designed, fabricated, and used in a new type of interferometer for optical metrology. This single hologram optical element combines the functions of a beam splitter, beam diverger, and aberrated null lens. Data presented show the successful application for an interferometric test of an f/6, 200-mm diam parabolic mirror.

Holographic fabrication of gratings in metal substrates

A program for investigating the grain enlargement resulting from the laser recrystallization of a thin gallium arsenide film on a patterned substrate, a technique known as graphoepitaxy was evaluated. More specifically, the effects of recrystallizing an uncapped gallium arsenide film using a continuous wave neodymium YAG laser operating at 1.06 microns were studied. In an effort to minimize arsenic loss from the film, the specimens were held in an arsine atmosphere during recrystallization. Two methods for fabricating patterned substrates were developed, one using reactive ion etching of a molybdenum film on both sapphire and silicon substates and another by preferential wet etching of a silicon substrate onto which a film of molybdenum was subsequently deposited.

Aberrations of holographic toroidal grating systems

Expressions are derived for the sixteen wave front aberration coefficients of a single grating. These give the wave aberrations to the fourth order for a plane symmetric grating system. The contributions from each mirror and grating can be added to give the aberrations in the final image. Problems encountered with intermediate astigmatic images are overcome by defining the wave front aberration with respect to an astigmatic reference surface. There is one field variable describing displacement of the object point from the symmetry plane. The aperture stop may be placed anywhere in the system, and equations are given for the aberration changes produced by sifting this position.

Calculations on the production and use of superfine holographic X-ray gratings for astrophysical observations

Superfine holograhic X-ray gratings may be produced by transferring onto metal an interference pattern generated by two branches of a sufficiently coherent X-ray beam, emitted in the form of synchrotron radiation from high energy electron storage rings. Generation of the coherent beam requires restrictions on the beam size. A calculation is presented which allows an exact evaluation of this restriction. The effect of defocusing optics on the expected resolution is also studied.

Photothermoplastic films for holographic recording

The electrophotographic and sensitometric characteristics of poly-N-vinyl carbazole photothermoplastic films, sensitized by an amorphous-Se sublayer are examined. It is shown that the photosensitivity of the material can be improved and its spectral range can be expanded by sensitization of amorphous Se with additions of Te, As, and Sb; this can be accomplished without a significant reduction in diffraction efficiency and resolving power.

Application of digital holographic interferometry to pressure measurements of symmetric, supercritical and circulation-control airfoils in transonic flow fields

Six airfoil interferograms were evaluated using a semiautomatic image-processor system which digitizes, segments, and extracts the fringe coordinates along a polygonal line. The resulting fringe order function was converted into density and pressure distributions and a comparison was made with pressure transducer data at the same wind tunnel test conditions. Three airfoil shapes were used in the evaluation to test the capabilities of the image processor with a variety of flows. Symmetric, supercritical, and circulation-control airfoil interferograms provided fringe patterns with shocks, separated flows, and high-pressure regions for evaluation. Regions along the polygon line with very clear fringe patterns yielded results within 1% of transducer measurements, while poorer quality regions, particularly near the leading and trailing edges, yielded results that were not as good.

Holographic interferometry at Wright Aeronautical Laboratories

The optical diagnostics requirements and plans for the Aero Propulsion Lab. are described. This laboratory is performing work in combustion as related to aero propulsion systems. They would like to use holography and other types of optical instrumentation for combustion diagnostics and flow visualization. A movie of a laser light sheet flow visualization of a combustor in operation was shown. This movie showed extremely clear examples of vortical and unsteady flow, and it would be of interest to use image analysis to quantify such data.

Welding arc and plasma studies using real time, multipass holographic interferometry

Flow visualization of the plasma process in a welding arc is being studied with a multipass Argon ion interferometer. High speed movies at 10,000 frames per/sec are taken. The multipass interferometer and several interferograms of the plasma near the electrode of the welding are given. Digitization of the fringes is currently done by hand.

Holographic optical interconnects for VLSI

This paper introduces new applications and design trade-offs anticipated for free-space optical interconnections of VLSI chips. New implementation s of VLSI functions are described that use the capability of making optical inputs at any point on a chip and take advantage of greater flexibility in on-chip signal routing. These include n-port addressable memories, CPU clock phase distribution, hardware multipliers, and dynamic memory refresh, as well as enhanced testability. Fault tolerance and production yields may be improved by reprogramming the optical imaging system to circumvent defective elements. These attributes, as well as those related to performance alone, will affect the design methodology of future VLSI ICs. This paper focuses on identifying the design issues, their possible solutions, and their impact on VLSI design techniques and, finally, presents some preliminary measurements on various system components.
